Patriots | Rob Housler could return to NE    Wed May 17, 06:12 PM

Updating a previous report, the New England Patriots released TE Rob Housler (hamstring) because he is dealing with a pulled hamstring, but the team could consider re-signing Housler once he is healed.

Footballguys view: A third-round pick in 2011 (Cardinals), Housler was going to find it difficult to make the Patriots 53-man roster anyway. They've got plenty of talent at the position with Rob Gronkowski and Dwayne Allen as the top two on the depth chart. Behind those two, guys like James O'Shaughnessy and Jacob Hollister are interesting receiving tight ends. Matt Lengel is a big-bodied blocker, rounding out the tight ends on the roster. Housler will get healed eventually, but the Patriots may have already moved on by that time.

Patriots | Rob Housler released    Wed May 17, 05:19 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Housler (undisclosed) was released Wednesday, May 17, with a failed physical designation.

Footballguys view: Housler hasn't done much as a pro, and he was going to be hard pressed to make the final roster anyway.

Patriots | Three players sign with Patriots    Tue Feb 7, 06:25 PM

New England Patriots TE Rob Housler, RB Tyler Gaffney and WR Devin Lucien were signed to Reserve/Futures contracts Tuesday, Feb. 7.

Footballguys view: With Martellus Bennett set to be a free agent, any tight end added by the Patriots will be one we're monitoring. Last with the Bears, Housler was released by the team after training camp in 2016. Gaffney is also a player we've been monitoring for some time in dynasty leagues. He's a powerful runner who could play a limited role for the Patriots if given a shot.

Chicago Bears TE Martellus Bennett (ribs) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Dec. 8, as he is dealing with fractured ribs.

Footballguys view: A bad way for Bennett's season to end. He finishes the 2015 season with 53 catches for 439 yards and three touchdowns. Free-agent TE Rob Housler (Browns) was subsequently signed. Jay Cutler should lean on Zach Miller even more going forward.

Browns | Gary Barnidge the starting TE?    Mon Aug 10, 05:39 PM

Cleveland Browns TE Gary Barnidge is currently the team's starting tight end, according to head coach Mike Pettine. That means the chances of TE Rob Housler making a big impact are slim. Undrafted TE Emmanuel Bibbs is one to watch, and he saw significant snaps in practice Monday, Aug. 10.

Footballguys view: None of these tight ends are fantasy relevant. Barnidge has good all-around ability, but he's not the mismatch a guy like Housler could be. Fantasy owners are avoiding most of the players in the Browns passing game.

Browns | Three TEs to platoon for Browns?    Tue Jun 30, 02:58 PM

Cleveland Browns TEs Gary Barnidge, Rob Housler and Jim Dray could all end up taking over for TE Jordan Cameron, who is now with the Miami Dolphins. Head coach Mike Pettine said the three tight ends provide some diversity and can be used in different ways.

Footballguys view: We're intrigued by Cameron (so long as he's healthy) now that he's with the Dolphins, but this Browns TE situation is one to avoid. There's not much fantasy value from any of these guys--even from a dynasty perspective.

Browns | Rob Housler hopes for big role    Fri Apr 10, 05:24 PM

Cleveland Browns TE Rob Housler said hopes to receive a big role in the passing game next season, because he believes he can contribute on offense.

Footballguys view: Housler wasn't able to get a foothold in Arizona, but the Cardinals notoriously make little use of tight ends in their passing game. While some of the physical traits of a good NFL passcatcher are there, Housler hasn't really flashed in a way to instill confidence in a possible breakout this year in Cleveland.

Browns | Rob Housler joining Browns    Thu Apr 9, 12:29 PM

Free-agent TE Rob Housler (Cardinals) has agreed to terms with the Cleveland Browns on a one-year deal, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Housler caught a combined 84 passes for 871 yards during 2012 and 2013, but was barely used in 2014 by the Arizona Cardinals. If the Browns are looking for a playmaker to replace Jordan Cameron, they might have to keep looking. He has some ability, but little consistency.

Ravens | Baltimore has discussed Rob Housler    Wed Apr 1, 01:07 AM

The Baltimore Ravens have held talks with free-agent TE Rob Housler (Cardinals). The Cincinnati Bengals are also interested in his services.

Footballguys view: Baltimore lost Owen Daniels (Broncos) in free agency, and Dennis Pitta's future is unclear after a severe hip injury. The Ravens have second-year pro Crockett Gillmore, but they could use some help at the position.

Bengals | Cincinnati interested in Rob Housler    Wed Apr 1, 01:06 AM

The Cincinnati Bengals are interested in free-agent TE Rob Housler (Cardinals), and he is hopeful of deciding on a team in the next week. The Baltimore Ravens have also discussed adding Housler.

Footballguys view: The Bengals could use some tight end help with Jermaine Gresham on the open market. Housler could be a good move tight end, but he's never really played up to his potential as a pro. The Bengals have Tyler Eifert as their top tight end right now.

Free-agent TE Rob Housler (Cardinals) has had talks with the Cleveland Browns, but no deal is imminent and no visit has been scheduled, according to a source. Housler is believed to be interested in joining the Browns.

Footballguys view: The Browns lost Jordan Cameron (Dolphins) in free agency, and they need help at the position. Housler is athletic and has decent upside, but he's never played up to his potential as a pro.

Cardinals | Rob Housler entering camp as No. 4 TE    Sat Jul 12, 05:30 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Rob Housler is expected to enter training camp as the fourth tight end on the depth chart and will have to compete for a roster spot.

Footballguys view: There's just no need for fantasy owners to put much stock into a Cardinals tight end. Bruce Arians' offense is not known for using the tight end that much, and Housler will have more fantasy value when he moves on to another team.

  Cardinals | Rob Housler's blocking a concern    Thu Jul 3, 04:16 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Rob Housler's blocking ability could be a concern, given what head coach Bruce Arians expects from the tight end position. Housler is an excellent route runner and pass catcher, but Arians wants his tight ends to also be bruising blockers off the line.

Footballguys view: As we mentioned in an earlier report about John Carlson, our own Andrew Garda reported from the Combine in February that head coach Bruce Arians wants his tight ends to block first and foremost. If Carlson can out-block Housler, he'll lose snaps and could be in danger of losing his job.

Cardinals | John Carlson impressing    Thu Jul 3, 04:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE John Carlson has been the tight end who impressed the most during organized team activities and minicamp. Head coach Bruce Arians complimented Carlson's ability to pick up the system quickly, his speed and hands, and he considers Carlson an adequate blocker. Arians wants physical tight ends who are capable blockers. Carlson will compete for targets with TEs Rob Housler, Jake Ballard and Troy Niklas (hand).

Footballguys view: Carlson had a brief moment with the Seattle Seahawks where he looked like he could be an impact player but he soon faded into the background, relegated to blocking duties. It was much the same in Minnesota, though he was also stuck behind Kyle Rudolph and only really saw some work when Rudolph was hurt last year. The Cardinals haven't had a good pass-catching tight end in a long time, but there is danger here as our own Andrew Garda reported from the Combine that head coach Bruce Arians wants his tight ends to block first and catch second. So Carlson might find himself blocking a lot this year, perhaps one reason why most of our staff sees him as no better than a low-end TE3.

Cardinals | Expected to keep four TEs    Thu Jun 12, 06:48 PM

Cardinals | Rob Housler having good offseason    Fri Jun 6, 03:27 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE Rob Housler has had a fantastic offseason, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Housler, who battled an ankle injury last season, is in the final year of his rookie contract and will compete with TEs John Carlson, rookie Troy Niklas and Jake Ballard for playing time.

Footballguys view: Housler is facing an uphill climb for production in an offense that doesn't feature the tight end and asks them to be blockers more than other schemes. Housler has gaudy measureables, but they haven't translated to fantasy relevance. He's only worth carrying in TE premium dynasty leagues right now.
