Lions | Calvin Johnson reaches milestone    Fri Nov 28, 03:37 AM

Detroit Lions WR Calvin Johnson, with his 146 yards on 11 catches Thursday, Nov. 27 against the Chicago Bears, became the fastest wide receiver to 10,000 yards. Johnson did it in his 115th game. The previous recordholder was former St. Louis Rams WR Torry Holt, who reached 10,000 yards in 116 games.

Footballguys view: Johnson ranks with some of the great QBs and JJ Watt as a handful of generational player that we get the joy of watching every week.

Rams | Torry Holt officially retires    Wed Apr 4, 03:57 PM

St. Louis Rams WR Torry Holt has retired from professional football.

Footballguys view: Holt won a Super Bowl his rookie season with the Rams and was a key part of the 'Greatest Show on Turf.' He moved on with the Jaguars but had a forgettable season in 2009, and was on the Patriots roster in 2010 before suffering a knee injury that ended his season before it began.

NFL | Torry Holt still looking to play    Wed May 25, 10:15 AM

Free-agent WR Torry Holt (Patriots) said he would like to sign with a team next season and has not filed his retirement papers at this point. Holt has been helping out the St. Louis Rams wide receivers during offseason workouts as a volunteer coach.

Footballguys view: Holt's far from the player he used to be. We think it's best if he retires but there may be a team willing to give him a shot as a reserve wide receiver.

Free-agent WR Torry Holt (Patriots) said he has been working out and has not ruled out a comeback but says his knee feels good some days and bad other days, reports Bernie Miklasz, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. 'Some days I feel good and I think, 'Maybe' this can happen,' Holt said. 'But there are times when the pain and discomfort is there and it takes me back to reality.'

Raiders | Torry Holt an option?    Thu Aug 19, 11:27 AM

The Oakland Raiders could look to sign free-agent WR Torry Holt (Patriots) due to so many injuries to the receiving corps, according to Steve Corkran, of ANG Newspapers.

Footballguys view: We know the Raiders love to sign veteran guys who others believe to be washed up, but adding Torry Holt doesn't make a lot of sense.

Patriots | Agree on injury settlement with Torry Holt    Wed Aug 18, 02:12 PM

New England Patriots WR Torry Holt (knee) is now a free agent after reaching an injury settlement with the team, reports ESPNBoston.com's Mike Reiss. He will be able to play with any team this season when he is fully healthy.

Footballguys view: It might be best if Holt just hangs up the cleats for good.

Patriots | Torry Holt to undergo surgery    Sun Aug 15, 03:10 PM

New England Patriots WR Torry Holt (knee) is scheduled to undergo knee surgery this week, according to Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com.

Footballguys view: This injury could spell the end for Torry Holt. Even if he had stayed healthy it was going to be difficult for him to make the final roster.

The New England Patriots have placed WR Torry Holt (undisclosed) on Injured Reserve, ending his 2010 season, reports Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com.

Footballguys view: Holt's 2010 season ends before it even gets started, and this injury may force the veteran receiver into retirement.

Patriots | Torry Holt could be released    Wed Aug 11, 10:33 AM

New England Patriots WR Torry Holt may not make the team's final roster, according to Tim Graham, of ESPN.com. Holt appears to be sitting sixth at best on the depth chart at wide receiver, behind WRs Randy Moss, Wes Welker, Julian Edelman, Brandon Tate and Taylor Price. WR Sam Aiken, who made 11 tackles and forced a fumble on special teams last year, could also earn a roster spot ahead of Holt.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here for anyone who watched Holt struggle as a Jaguar last year. He's not the same player he used to be, and the Patriots have younger receivers who are simply better than Holt is at this point in his career.

Patriots | Torry Holt on the bubble to make team    Sun Aug 8, 05:45 PM

New England Patriots WR Torry Holt is on the bubble to make the teams final roster, reports Christopher Price, of WEEI.com. Holt has not done much of anything during training camp, and he could be competing with WR Sam Aiken for the final wide receiver spot.

Footballguys view: This report comes as no surprise to us. Holt looked bad in Jacksonville last year, and we don't hold out hope for him to turn it around this year.

Patriots | Team wants Tate to win #3 role    Mon Jul 5, 11:48 PM

Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com, reports that his sense is that the Patriots want Brandon Tate to win the #3 wide receiver role this year, but it remains uncertain and veteran Torry Holt is an "insurance policy".

Footballguys view: Tate is probably not worth even a late-round pick in redraft leagues with Julian Edelman likely to replace Wes Welker if he has to spend time on the PUP as Reiss points out. Edelman and Tate would then have to split time in three-wide sets upon Welker's return. Tate is, however, a very explosive talent who could break out and force the Pats to play him more often, so he should be on your waiver wire watch list. He is also a high-upside player in dynasty leagues as he could take over Randy Moss's role next year.

Patriots | Julian Edelman and Torry Holt may need to step up    Sat Jun 26, 02:45 PM

New England Patriots WR Wes Welker (knee, shoulder) appears to be making great gains in his recovery from offseason surgeries, reports Kevin McNamara, of The Providence Journal. If he is not ready for Week 1, the team will turn to WRs Julian Edelman and Torry Holt to help fill the void.

Footballguys view: Holt isn't the same player he used to be and looked very bad last year in Jacksonville. We think Edelman or second-year man Brandon Tate could fill in nicely if Wes Welker misses any time in the regular season. There's mixed reports on Welker so far this offseason. Some say he'll be ready for the start of training camp, while others believe he'll start the regular season on the PUP.

Patriots | Torry Holt wants to lead by example    Wed May 12, 04:12 AM

Shalise Manza Young, of The Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots WR Torry Holt feels he will be able to help the team's younger receivers by just leading by example. Holt said he knows the team's other receivers are going to be watching him day in and day out. During the interview, Holt displayed his badly bent middle finger on his left hand. It bends about 45 degrees after years of being dislocated; and Holt often has to pop it back into place, including sometimes when he is running routes during games.

Footballguys view: Holt is a tough veteran, but he's not the same player he used to be as we saw last year in Jacksonville. If Wes Welker struggles to recover from his injury, then a player like Holt could be in for a bigger role than some people think in 2010.

Patriots | Holt believes he has plenty of football to play    Wed Apr 21, 05:23 PM

Monique Walker, of the Boston Globe, reports New England Patriots WR Torry Holt said he believes he has plenty of football left to play in his career despite being 33 years old and playing 11 seasons. 'I still have plenty of football left to play. I honestly believe that. I train, I prepare that way. I think that way. I carry myself that way, so it's just a matter of continuing and being given the opportunity to play and to make plays for the football team,' Holt said.

Footballguys view: Judging by the way he played for Jacksonville last year, we beg to differ.

Patriots | Holt officially signed    Tue Apr 20, 05:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Christopher Price, of WEEI.com, reports the New England Patriots have signed unrestricted free-agent WR Torry Holt (Jaguars). Terms of the contract were not disclosed, but an earlier report stated it is a one-year deal worth $1.7 million.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have tried adding veteran wide receivers in recent years with mixed results. Joey Galloway was added last year, but didn't finish the year with the team. Holt comes off a disappointing season with Jacksonville, but could give the Patriots a decent target for Tom Brady while Wes Welker recovers from injury.

Bears | Holt says he would be good fit for offense     Sat Feb 13, 09:46 AM

Updating a previous item, ESPNChicago.com reports free-agent WR Torry Holt (Jaguars) said during a radio interview Friday, Feb. 12, that he would be a good fit for the Chicago Bears offense due to his relationship with new offensive coordinator Mike Martz. 'I think I could fit in really well with that ballclub and add a really good veteran presence,' Holt said. 'In (Martz's) system you've got to be able to run,' Holt aded. 'That's one of the things I would tell those guys, you better be able to run, and you better be cerebral to learn, and you better have thick skin because he is so demanding. You are working with a guy who is a perfectionist. If you can't do those three things and you're not tough and you're not willing to go and block and be efficient and be quick you will not play in his system.'

Adam Rank, of NFL.com, reports unrestricted free-agent WR Torry Holt said during a radio interview that he would be interested in signing with the Chicago Bears and reuniting with offensive coordinator Mike Martz.

Jaguars | Holt released    Thu Feb 11, 04:19 PM

Updating a previous item, Michael C. Wright, of The Florida Times-Union, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to release WR Torry Holt sometime this week.

Bears | Could be interested in adding Holt    Sat Feb 6, 03:50 PM

Neil Hayes, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports the Chicago Bears could be interested in Jacksonville Jaguars WR Torry Holt once he is released by the Jaguars.

Footballguys view: Holt and offensive coordinator Mike Martz had success when they were together with the St. Louis Rams. The Bears could be looking to add some veteran leadership to their WR corps. We doubt that Holt would start, but he could teach Devin Hester, Johnny Knox, Juaquin Iglesias, and Devin Aromashodu a thing or two about the offense.

CBSSports.com reports Jacksonville Jaguars WRs Torry Holt, Troy Williamson and Nate Hughes received reps with the first-team offense during practice Monday, Sept. 7.

Footballguys view: With all the hoopla around the resurrection of Troy Williamson's career and the talented trio of rookie wide receivers from the Jags draft, Hughes emergence has gotten lost in the shuffle. He might be worth an addition in deep dynasty leagues if Mike Sims-Walker can't stay healthy once again this year.

Jacksonville WR Torry Holt, on his Twitter feed, taunted his followers with a post of "i'm ruining all your fantasy football chances by faking an injury so jarret dillard is the starter."

Footballguys view: This is about as unofficial as it gets, but Holt didn't say Mike Thomas or Tiquan Underwood would get in the lineup if he faked an injury, so it might a clue as to where the depth chart stands at this moment.

Jaguars | Holt needs to carry the load    Wed Jul 15, 03:30 AM

Vic Ketchman, of Jaguars.com, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WR Torry Holt will be counted on to be a dependable target for QB David Garrard. With a roster full of young, inexperienced wide receivers, Holt will need to be the primary option amongst the receivers until the other young wideouts are ready to pick up the slack.

Footballguys view: Holt may catch 70-80 balls this year, but we think Ketchman is underestimating the rookie wideouts and Mike Walker. Walker can play a big role as the #2 if he can stay healthy. Look to last year's Pittsburgh game, when Walker caught six balls for over 100 yards, as a preview of what he can with a starting job. Mike Thomas and Jarett Dillard were two of the more polished wide receivers in the draft and they are closer to making an impact than typical first-year passcatchers.

Jaguars | Impressed with Holt so far    Mon Jun 22, 11:44 AM

Vito Stellino, of The Florida Times-Union, reports the Jacksonville Jaguars believe WR Torry Holt will make a major impact both on and off the field this season. 'I think the one thing that Torry has brought is a level of trust for David (Garrard), so he's aware that at third-and-7, he's going to run more than seven yards. I think that'll be a good thing for David,' general manager Gene Smith said.

Footballguys view: Holt also has been working with several of the team's young receivers this offseason like Mike Thomas, Jarett Dillard, and Tiquan Underwood. The Jaguars had a disappointing season last year, but with new - better weapons at WR, and an upgraded Offensive Line it should help David Garrard and company bounce back to their 2007 form.

Jaguars | Holt comes full circle    Sat Jun 20, 08:38 PM

Charlie Bernstein, from Jagnation.com, reports veteran receiver Torry Holt went from bright-eyed rookie to full blown superstar wideout, and during that time he earned seven Pro Bowl selections. In 2008, Torry's production dropped significantly as the Rams struggled mightily, both with their quarterback situation and in the win/loss department. Holt's 64 catches for 796 yards and three touchdowns were the lowest since his rookie season of 1999.

Footballguys view: Holt learned from one of the best in the game, Isaac Bruce, and he now gets a chance to "pay it forward" to some very talented young receivers in Jacksonville. Being a mentor doesn't mean that Torry will not contribute, quite the contrary in fact according to Jags coordinator Dirk Koetter. "He's looked good," Koetter said. "He doesn't run like he once did, and when we became interested in Torry we watched a lot of film on him and Torry has explained to me that he knows how to take care of himself and be ready when the time comes. You've got to take him on his word on that." He should be a very positive influence on players like Jarett Dillard and Mike Thomas.

Vaughn McClure, of the Chicago Tribune, reports Chicago Bears OT Orlando Pace said he tried until the last minute to get Jacksonville Jaguars WR Torry Holt to sign with the team while he was a free agent. 'We were working on that for a while,' Pace said of Holt. 'But I think it's a good fit for him in Jacksonville. He wanted to be in warm weather.'

Footballguys view: The Bears have an unknown WR situation coming into the 2009 season. Torry Holt would've provided some stability and leadership to a group that needs to elevate their play now that Jay Cutler is the QB. Rookies Juaquin Iglesias, Johnny Knox, and Derek Kinder could push for playing time over Earl Bennett and Rashied Davis.

Jaguars | Holt, Walker and Northcutt enter as top three receivers    Fri May 1, 01:37 PM

Michael C. Wright, of The Times-Union, reports Jacksonville Jaguars WRs Torry Holt and Mike Walker will likely start minicamp as starters on the outside and WR Dennis Northcutt will work as the team's slot receiver in three receiver sets.

Footballguys view: Torry Holt is a lock to be a week 1 starter as long as he is healthy. After Holt the entire depth chart is up in the air. Mike Walker looked better than Brandon Marshall during their time at UCF, but he has failed to stay healthy during his entire pro career. Northcutt is a savvy veteran, but how much does he have left in the tank?

Jaguars | Holt says reports of his decline were false    Wed Apr 22, 07:47 PM

He added, "To be able to catch 64 passes in a disgruntled organization was actually pretty good. All this talk about my decline is false."

Footballguys view: Torry Holt will likely never regain the form that we've seen from him in years past. However, it will be interesting to see if a change of scenery is just what the doctor ordered.
