Colts | Painter the backup to Manning...for now    Sun May 16, 11:38 AM

Mike Chappell, from the Indianapolis Star, notes that as of right now, Manning's backup is Curtis Painter. Willy is the No. 3 guy with Tim Hiller, an undrafted rookie out of Western Michigan sitting at No. 4. That's all subject to change as the offseason unfolds and training camp opens. It's everyone's hope that Painter makes noticeable progress in his second season. There's no question he did little to inspire optimism as a rookie. The team put him in two difficult situations - against the Jets and in snowy Buffalo - and he did not respond very well. There's always a chance the team will sign a veteran QB prior to training camp, but that seldom has been the case.

Footballguys view: Drew Willy and Tim Hiller are unlikely to beat out Painter for the #2 job, so the Colts will just have to hope that Peyton Manning continues to stay healthy all season long. Painter can be a capable backup, but he does not handle pressure well and will force the football too often when the heat is on.

Colts | Nine UDFAs signed    Tue Apr 27, 05:54 PM

The Indianapolis Colts have signed undrafted free-agent RB Javarris James (Miami, Fla.), QB Tim Hiller (Western Michigan), PK Brett Swenson (Michigan State), WR Blair White (Michigan State), WR Brandon James (Florida), S Mike Newton (Buffalo), S David Caldwell (William & Mary), LB Vuna Tuihalamaka (Arizona) and CB Brandon King (Purdue). Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: We love the pairing of WR Blair White with the Colts. He started at Michigan State as a walk-on, and was a scholarship player two years later. White is a very hard worker that can quickly get in and out of breaks. He has great hands and hates to drop passes. It's fitting that RB Javarris James (Edgerrin's cousin) gets a chance to make the Colts roster. He never flashed great ability at the University of Miami, but is a very instinctive and gutsy running back.

NFL | Hiller invited to NFL Combine    Wed Feb 3, 01:21 AM

NFLCombine.net reports Western Michigan QB Tim Hiller has been invited to participate in the 2010 NFL Scouting Combine Feb. 24 to March 2.

Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey is down in El Paso at the Texas vs The Nation Game, and reports that Hiller looks like Kyle Orton when he has time to throw. However, when he feels pressure Hiller does not make quick decisions and gets careless with the football.
