49ers | Starting QB for Week 8 undecided Sun Oct 25, 09:06 PM
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach mike Singletary said after the team's Week 7 game he has not decided which quarterback will start Week 8. QB Alex D. Smith replaced QB Shaun Hill during the team's game Sunday, Oct. 25. Singletary will likely make an announcement on a starting quarterback Monday, Oct. 26.

49ers | S. Hill benched, A. Smith throws three TD passes Week 7 Sun Oct 25, 06:16 PM
The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill was benched after the first half of the team's Week 7 game, in which he was 6-for-11 for 45 yards. Hill was replaced by QB Alex D. Smith, who went 15-for-22 for 206 yards with three touchdown passes and an interception against the Houston Texans.
| Our view: We have to believe that Smith will start next week. |

49ers | S. Hill throws for two TD passes Week 3 Sun Sep 27, 09:26 PM
The Associated Press reports San Francisco QB Shaun Hill was 15-for-25 for 195 yards with two touchdowns and an interception during the team's Week 3 game against the Minnesota Vikings.
| Our view: Hill was effective and kept the Niners in the game after Frank Gore left early with an aggravation of his ankle injury. He and Vernon Davis were in sync early and often as the Niners continue to struggle to keep their wide receivers involved. |

49ers | S. Hill throws for 144 yards Week 2 Sun Sep 20, 08:50 PM

49ers | S. Hill solid Week 1 Sun Sep 13, 08:19 PM
The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill was 18-for-31 for 209 yards with a touchdown pass during the team's Week 1 game. However, he was sacked four times in the game.
| Our view: Hill moved the offense in fits and starts, at least partially because the running game did not get on track all day. He hooked up with Isaac Bruce on a 50-yard pass that should dispel the belief that Hill lacks the arm strength to stretch the field. |

49ers | Battle on same page with Hill Sun Aug 30, 03:08 AM
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers WR Arnaz Battle seemed to be the only receiver on the team QB Shaun Hill has a rapport with Saturday, Aug. 29. He was money on third downs and took advantage of his chances. Battle had four receptions for 54 yards. He still needs to make the team's final roster.

Taylor Price, of SF49ers.com, reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Shaun Hill (back) will start in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

49ers | S. Hill on the field Thursday Thu Aug 27, 12:35 PM
CBSSports.com reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill (back) is on the field and throwing passes during practice Thursday, Aug. 27.
| Our view: Hill's injury didn't even require an MRI, which is fairly routine, so the team and Hill must have known that it wasn't very serious. |

| Our view: The 49ers are going to be careful with their starting QB, and there's no need to risk further injury as we're only a few weeks away from the start of the regular season. |

49ers | Hill will make first opening-day start of his NFL career Mon Aug 24, 08:06 PM
Continuing an ongoing storyline, Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill will make his first opening-day start in his eight-year NFL career this season. Hill, who has 10 NFL career starts, beat out QB Alex D. Smith for the starting job this year. Head coach Mike Singletary said he, offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye and quarterback coach Mike Johnson were all in agreement with the decision. Singletary cited Hill's leadership and consistency, as well as his solid play last year, for the reasons to pick him as the starter. Singletary also praised Smith, saying the team is comfortable with him as their No. 2 quarterback.
| Our view: Congratulations to Hill, who deserves this opportunity. |

49ers | Singletary: Hill will start season opener Mon Aug 24, 06:53 PM
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press-Democrat, reports on his Twitter feed that 49ers head coach Mike Singletary has named Shaun Hill starting QB for the season opener vs. Arizona on September 13.
| Our view: We think Hill is good enough to hold the job all year. He's one of the cheapest fantasy backup QBs out there, and he has one of the highest ceilings of the QBs ranked 13-24. |

49ers | X-Rays negative on Smith's thumb Sun Aug 23, 07:16 PM
Matt Barrows, from the Sacramento Bee, reports x-rays taken immediately after Saturday's game on Alex Smith's right thumb were negative, according to a team source. Smith hurt the thumb while making a tackle after an interception. He threw one pass -- an incompletion -- on the following drive but was replaced by Shaun Hill midway through the drive. The 49ers will wait to see how Smith's thumb responds before determining his workload this week. The team's next game is Aug. 29 in Dallas.
| Our view: Shaun Hill has all but wrapped up this QB competition this preseason. Smith's injury may not be serious, but it seriously damages his chances to make a late run at the starting spot. |

49ers | Singletary wants to see more out of his quarterbacks Sun Aug 23, 12:33 PM
The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said he would like to see more out of QBs Shaun Hill and Alex D. Smith when they are on the field. Neither player really stepped up during the team's second preseason game, but Singletary would like to choose his team's starting quarterback before their next preseason game.
| Our view: Unless Singletary puts off the decision another week, Hill should be named the starter for week 1, because he has proven his ability to lead the team to victories. |

49ers | Hill inching toward starting gig? Sun Aug 23, 06:17 AM
Adam Schefter, of ESPN, reports it appears San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill will be named the team's starting quarterback after Alex D. Smith completed just a third of his nine passing attempts and threw an interception Saturday, Aug. 22. Hill was 3-for-7 for 20 yards. Head coach Mike Singletary has previously said he would wait until after the team's third preseason game before choosing a starter.
| Our view: Singletary has seen the writing on the wall, and even though some inside the franchise may be disappointed, Alex Smith simply isn't the best quarterback on the roster. Shaun Hill throws one of the ugliest passes of any starting QB in the NFL, but he is a leader and a winner. Those are traits that Alex Smith hasn't shown consistently yet in his pro career. The former #1 overall pick still has plenty of upside and potential, but that's not what wins games in the NFL. The 49ers players seem to respond to Hill on the field, he has good command of the huddle, and those are two of the main reasons why he should be named the starting quarterback. |

49ers | Hill 'clearly ahead' in QB battle Thu Aug 20, 07:42 PM
Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports that all indications he's gotten are that Shaun Hill is clearly ahead of Alex Smith in the battle to become the 49ers starting QB. Maiocco writes that Smith will have to perform very well in the next two preseason games to win the job, but that the team has been encouraged by Smith's performance and they feel he could be poised to take over the job and stay the starter for a long time if the opportunity arises.
| Our view: In some ways, we feel like we're in CNN on election night with these QB battles. It's starting to look like we can call the San Francisco battle after this week unless Hill nosedives. Cleveland, Tampa, and the Jets are also nearing the point where we can call a winner, even if the coaches of the teams are not willing to yet. |

49ers | Hill 'less of a mystery' according to Singletary Sun Aug 16, 07:27 PM
Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Shaun Hill is "less of a mystery" at this point than Alex Smith. Hill has started 10 NFL games the past two seasons since Smith last suited up for a meaningful game. It's never a great idea to have a mystery at quarterback. Smith must erase every shred of doubt -- or mystery -- from Singletary's mind. And he does not have much time to do it.
| Our view: The QB race is "too close to call" right now, and if it continues on this same path we may see Hill designated the starter because he is more of a proven commodity. |

49ers | S. Hill, A. Smith solid Friday Sat Aug 15, 02:30 AM
The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill and QB Alex D. Smith were both solid in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 14, but neither did anything to stand out. Smith finished the game 5-for-7 for 33 yards passing with a touchdown and a sack. Hill was 2-for-2 for 41 yards with two sacks in the game. Head coach Mike Singletary has not decided on a starter for the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 22.
| Our view: Hill showed his toughness and leadership on the field even though he didn't throw many passes. Smith held on to the ball too long at times, but finished with a touchdown on the day and seemed to get more comfortable as the game went on. |

49ers | Hill to start Friday Thu Aug 13, 03:37 PM
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill will start the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 14. Head coach Mike Singletary said this does not mean Hill is leading in the starting quarterback race.
| Our view: Good for Coach Sing for making that clear. This race is very close because both QBs have had good camps. Play in the preseason games will likely determine the winner. |

49ers | Hill's leadership could be the difference Tue Aug 11, 10:15 PM
Jason LaConfora, from NFL.com, notes that some people in the San Francisco 49ers organization believe that veteran Shaun Hill's superior intangibles might be what sets him apart from former first-round pick Alex Smith in the team's ongoing quarterback competition. This battle could go to the end of camp --- and the first real test comes Friday in the preseason opener against the Broncos --- but according to some in San Fran, privately, Hill's command of the team could be the edge. "He's taking to the QB role as a leader," one team source said. "He's more vocal."
| Our view: Hill may throw the ugliest "spiral" in all of football, but he's a winner. Players rally around his tough, gritty style but with so much invested in former #1 overall pick Alex Smith the team may decide to go with upside over leadership. However, if the team gets off to a rough start, we could see the lockerroom calling for Shaun Hill to be the starter. Coach Mike Singletary has not named a starter for Friday night's preseason game against the Broncos. |

49ers | Smith and Hill just keep getting better Sun Aug 9, 08:47 PM
The San Francisco Chronicle reports quarterbacks Alex Smith and Shaun Hill - They just keep getting better. Hill was certainly ahead of Smith in the early part of the week because he was far more consistent. But Smith has retained his touch on the deep ball and improved his short passing. Both are making the defense look bad.
| Our view: There are several people inside the organization that want Alex Smith to win the job, and if the season were to start today he may get the call as the starter. Hill doesn't throw pretty passes, and is not as physically gifted as Smith - but the guy is just a winner. The team may decide to go with his moxie over Smith's potential. |

49ers | Battle at quarterback ongoing Sun Aug 9, 04:58 AM
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Alex D. Smith reeled off 20 consecutive completions during practice Saturday, Aug. 8, and showed an accurate arm on short passes, which had been a problem for him in the past. Smith has performed well enough during training camp to put himself in serious contention for the starting job, but QB Shaun Hill has done nothing to lose the starting job, too. Hill showed improvement to his game Saturday as well, hitting some deeper passes during the workouts.

49ers | No separation in quarterback competition thus far Sat Aug 8, 10:35 AM
Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports neither San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill or QB Alex D. Smith is separating himself in the team's quarterback competition thus far in training camp.
| Our view: We have a feeling that this may be the story near the end of the preseason as well. How the quarterbacks perform in the preseason games will go a long way in determining the starter. Hill throws the ugliest pass in football, but he just wins games. Smith has the highest upside, but has yet to live up to his potential. This competition may be the closest out of all the QB battles in training camp, and it could last into the regular season with each player rotating after a few weeks if the team feels their QB play isn't what it needs to be. |

49ers | Smith in position to win the starting job Wed Aug 5, 06:13 PM
Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports on his twitter feed that the games are key but there's no question QB Alex Smith has put himself in position to win 49ers' starting job.
| Our view: There are some in the 49ers organization that want Smith to win the job, but the competition is still wide open. Smith has better upside than Shaun Hill, and while Hill throws the ugliest pass in football he also wins games - and that's the bottom line. If Smith can continue his hot play in the preseason he could be announced the starter for the regular season by the third week in the preseason. |

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill has completed 76.5 percent of his passes (39-for-51) during 11-on-11 drills in the first six practices, while QB Alex D. Smith has completed 75.5 percent of his passes (40-for-53) during those drills.

49ers | Singletary not impressed with his QBs Sat Aug 1, 08:44 PM
Matt Barrows, from the Sacramento Bee, reports 49ers head coach Mike Singletary wasn't bowled over by either player. In fact, expect Singletary to strike this "I'm not impressed" pose throughout camp in an effort to squeeze the best from his players. "I want to find a guy to lead the team," he said. "And right now I'm not seeing that guy."
| Our view: The 49ers are trying to make the best out of a bad situation with their quarterbacks. This competition should last well into training camp, and the final decision may come down to who is less terrible. |

49ers | Smith booed, Hill says job is his to take Sat Aug 1, 08:39 PM
Dan Brown, from the San Jose Mercury News, reports During practice Saturday morning, quarterback Alex Smith scanned the field, saw nobody open and threw a wobbly pass out of bounds. The crowd booed. They booed hard. Never mind that it was Smith's first snap of training camp. Out here, patience is no virtue. "That's fine, that's part of the deal," Smith said with a laugh. "It's part of playing quarterback in the NFL."
| Our view: Hill said there was nothing significant about opening training camp as the No. 1 quarterback. The only thing that matters to him is who is No. 1 at the end. We like the attitude coming from both quarterbacks, and this is a competition that should last until at least the third week of the preseason. |

49ers | Smith favorite in quarterback race? Sat Aug 1, 09:44 AM
Tim Kawakami, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports, almost assuredly, several people within the San Francisco 49ers' front office want QB Alex D. Smith to win the team's quarterback competition with QB Shaun Hill, now that Smith is healthy.
| Our view: This meshes with earlier reports that people in the front office want Smith to win the job. 49ers GM Scot McCloughan is the person who invested the #1 overall pick in Smith, and Smith has a much better skill set than Shaun Hill. Smith said he is entering training camp the healthiest he's been since joining the team. 'Probably yeah, I would imagine this is the best I've felt since I've been here,' Smith said. |

The Associated Press reports San Francisco 49ers QBs Shaun Hill and Alex D. Smith both reported to training camp early to get a jump start on their competition for the team's starting quarterback job.
| Our view: This is the most controversial starting QB battle, because some believe Hill has proven he should be the starter after going 7-3 over the last two seasons. |

49ers | Organization pulling for Smith to win QB job? Sun Jul 26, 11:41 AM
Matt Bowen, of the National Football Post, reports that "everyone inside the (49ers) building is pulling for quarterback Alex Smith to win the starting job in camp. Publicly, it's being called an open competition, but a source close to the Niners told us that he believes Smith will win the job."
| Our view: This makes sense because the 49ers GM Scot McCloughan is the person who invested the #1 overall pick in Smith, and Smith is a much more talented QB than Shaun Hill. Hill isn't a great practice player, and he will have trouble winning a competition with Smith if his 7-3 record as a starter and success last year is given no weight in the battle. New offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye is going to lean on the run, so the winner will likely only be an adequate to good backup in fantasy leagues. |

49ers | Eyes on a QB in 2010 draft? Wed Jul 15, 05:45 PM
Matt Maiocco, from the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, notes the 49ers traded for Carolina's 2010 first-round pick because the organization felt the trade was the best way of getting into an ideal position for next year, just in case they become in the market for a quarterback again. This season will give the 49ers a firm idea of where they stand at quarterback. Coach Mike Singletary says he's happy to have Shaun Hill and Alex Smith competing for the starting job. That competition should be decided after the second exhibition game - if not sooner. But the 49ers were prepared to pay Kurt Warner in the neighborhood of $15 million a year to leave the Cardinals, so that tells you that the organization has its doubts about Hill and Smith.
| Our view: The 49ers have 2 first-round picks and could decide to trade up if neither of their picks are high enough to select Jevan Snead (Ole Miss) or Sam Bradford (Oklahoma). |

49ers | QB competition too close to call Mon Jul 13, 08:08 PM
FoxSports.com reports that the 49ers QB competition between Alex Smith and Shaun Hill is too close to call according to head coach Mike Singletary. Singletary also acknowledges that if it stays this way, it'll likely go to Hill. Hill has appeared to get a better handle on new offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye's offense, while Smith has thrown the ball better this offseason than at any point during his tenure with the 49ers.
| Our view: We think Hill is by far the better fantasy prospect for 2009, but having this battle looming over his draft stock makes it hard to spend a pick on him earlier than the very late rounds of your draft, since he only has low-end starter/high-end backup fantasy upside. |

49ers | Smith makes huge strides in OTAs Mon Jun 22, 07:11 PM
Kevin Lynch, of the San Francisco Chronicle, reports that after showing up for OTAs looking like a backup, Alex Smith has forced a full-fledged QB competition by consistently outperforming Shaun Hill in practice.
| Our view: Lynch called Smith's accuracy "stunning", and we can believe it. He has played poorly so far in his career, and had three shoulder surgeries, yet the 49ers still came back for more by restructuring his contract to a two year, 6.5 million dollar deal early in the offseason. Smith clearly has his backers in the organization, and he's the kind of player who shines in shorts and shells. Shaun Hill has a reputation for being a poor practice player, so don't be shocked if Smith is the week 1 starter (and Hill is leading the team to wins again by week 5) |

49ers | A. Smith gaining ground as training camp nears Tue Jun 16, 09:10 PM
Matt Barrows, from the Sacramento Bee, reports that Coach that Singletary has a legitimate quarterback competition. Smith is throwing the ball well and his confidence is as ironclad as it's been since college. Singletary touched on that today. "Well, I think the playing field is level now," he said of the QB competition. "I think before the offseason began, I wasn't really sure where Alex was. You know, he's been through a lot in four years. I think in order for he and Shaun to compete on level ground, he had to get healthy, he had to get his mind focused, I think he had to let go of some of the bitterness that happened to him, some of the bad things, and get the bad taste out of his mouth and be ready to go. I think that has happened."
| Our view: This competition was never supposed to be this close. Early reports from minicamps had Alex Smith struggling as expected, but lately he's really been turning heads on the sidelines. We'll have to see this play out in the preseason before a starter can emerge. |

49ers | Hill confident he can win Wed Jun 10, 10:38 AM
Darren Sabedra, of the San Jose Mercury News, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Shaun Hill, who is 7-3 as a starter, feels he can lead the team to wins this season. 'I feel like I've proven that I can win,' Hill said, 'and that I can win with this team. Obviously, winning is the most important thing.'
| Our view: Hill had an uncharacteristically good day at practice after the 49ers GM praised Alex Smith. He's proven everything he can on the field, but it still feels like it will be an uphill battle for him to win the starting job with Smith saying all the right things and flashing the arm strength and talent that got him drafted first overall. The best strategy might be to pass on Hill until the job is settled, but be ready to pounce on him on the waiver wire if Smith wins the job, because Smith has never looked as good as the modestly talented Hill when the bullets are flying. |

| Our view: The early edge in this battle has to go to Shaun Hill. Reports from the 49ers mini camp stated that Alex Smith was struggling with accuracy and was seen holding his sore shoulder after the practices. New addition Michael Crabtree will help the QB play immensely, no matter who is lined up under center. |
