Redskins | Washington works out two RBs    Mon Nov 13, 07:19 PM

Free-agent RBs Ronnie Hillman (Cowboys) and Daryl Richardson (Colts) worked out for the Washington Redskins Monday, Nov. 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With Rob Kelley (ankle, knee) down, Washington needs help at the position. We'll see Samaje Perine as the lead back and Chris Thompson continue as a valuable (and explosive) change-of-pace back. Hillman and Richardson are kind of the same player....speedy backs who can thrive in space.

Cowboys | Dallas cuts several players    Sat Sep 2, 04:02 PM

Dallas Cowboys RB Brandon Brown-Dukes, WR Brian Brown, WR Karel Hamilton, TE Blake Jarwin, WR Andy Jones, WR Lance Lenoir, TE M.J. McFarland and WR Uzoma Nwachukwu were waived Saturday, Sept. 2. The team also released RB Ronnie Hillman.

Footballguys view: Hillman couldn't make the cut in the backfield. His speed and big-play ability just weren't enough to keep behind Ezekiel Elliott, Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris.

Cowboys | Ronnie Hillman joins Dallas    Thu Jul 27, 08:22 AM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Chargers) will sign with the Dallas Cowboys Thursday, July 27, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This definitely points to concerns within the Dallas organization that Ezekiel Elliott will miss some game time. Darren McFadden and Alfred Morris are likely your starters in his stead, though, and Hillman has been an epic disappointment since leaving Denver. We wouldn't pull the trigger on him unless the previously mentioned backs get hurt.

Cowboys | No plans to sign backup RB    Sat Jul 22, 03:44 PM

Despite working out RB Ronnie Hillman and RB Denard Robinson, the Dallas Cowboys do not plan on signing either back 'at this time.'

Footballguys view: The Cowboys might be keeping their running back call list up to date in preparation for the possibility that Ezekiel Elliott misses significant time due to a suspension, but if they aren't signing anyone, there is no imminent sign that they know of a big suspension coming.

Cowboys | Dallas takes a look at Ronnie Hillman    Fri Jul 21, 02:55 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Vikings) worked out with the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, July 20.

Footballguys view: Hillman has never returned to the level of play he showed during a nice 2015 in Denver. Even if Ezekiel Elliott is suspended for a game or two, Hillman will be stuck behind Alfred Morris.

Chargers | Ronnie Hillman goes nowhere fast    Sat Dec 24, 05:12 PM

Chargers | Ronnie Hillman likely to be active    Wed Dec 14, 11:09 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Ronnie Hillman is expected to make his team debut in Week 15 against the Oakland Raiders with RB Melvin Gordon (hip, knee) likely sidelined.

Footballguys view: Kenneth Farrow should be the lead back with the Chargers while Gordon is out. Hillman will work as a rotational change-of-pace back. We've got Farrow as a RB2 in PPR leagues.

Chargers | San Diego may use platoon at RB    Mon Dec 12, 08:07 PM

San Diego Chargers RBs Kenneth Farrow and Ronnie Hillman may share playing time if RB Melvin Gordon (hip, knee) is not able to play, in the opinion of Michael Gehlken, of The San Diego Union-Tribune.

Footballguys view: That would make the most sense. Farrow should be the lead back for the Chargers with Hillman playing the speedy change-of-pace role. It's early in the week, but we'd project Farrow as a low-end RB2/flex and Hillman as a 'what the heck' flex against the Raiders in Week 15. Over the last three weeks, the Raiders defense has surrendered 135.3 rushing yards per game.

Chargers | Ronnie Hillman joins the Chargers    Tue Nov 22, 06:12 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Vikings) was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, Nov. 22. WR Griff Whalen was waived in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: The Chargers needed more depth behind starter Melvin Gordon. We don't see Hillman having much fantasy value with his new team. If he makes the active roster, Hillman may only mix in a tiny bit as a third-down back.

Vikings | Ronnie Hillman waived    Mon Nov 21, 03:18 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Ronnie Hillman was waived by the team Monday, Nov. 21.

Footballguys view: Hillman did little to impress during his short time with the Vikings. He was a free agent this last offseason, but no team showed interest. Hillman did sign with Denver, but the team let him go even though he led the team in rushing in 2015. We don't see teams lined up to sign him.

Vikings | Ronnie Hillman should see playing time    Sat Oct 29, 06:01 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Ronnie Hillman likely will receive playing time against the Chicago Bears in Week 8 because RB Jerick McKinnon (ankle) has been ruled out.

Footballguys view: We'll see Matt Asiata with a majority of the carries/touches for the Vikings. Hillman will get mixed in, and all he needs is a small crease to break off a big play. He's worth adding in super deep leagues where RB help is scarce.

Footballguys view: Treadwell as a healthy scratch continues the trend of signs that he won't contribute to the Vikings this year. The offense could trend in a more pass-heavy direction, but it looks like Adam Thielen would be better situated to take advantage if that happens.

Vikings | Ronnie Hillman signs with Vikings    Wed Sep 21, 12:31 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Broncos) signed with the Minnesota Vikings Wednesday, Sept. 21. Terms weren't disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hillman was the Broncos leading rusher last year, but he couldn't beat out Devontae Booker or Kapri Bibbs in training camp this season. When he gets up to speed, the speedy veteran could negatively impact the fantasy value of Jerrick McKinnon. This move also may indicate how worried is about the potential return of Adrian Peterson (knee) later this year.

Chargers | San Diego hosts Ronnie Hillman    Tue Sep 20, 05:26 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Broncos) visited the San Diego Chargers Tuesday, Sept. 20.

Footballguys view: Hillman worked under Mike McCoy when the Chargers head coach was the OC in Denver (2012). The speedy veteran was the leading rusher for the Broncos in 2015, but he couldn't beat out Kapri Bibbs for a roster spot. An unrestricted free agent earlier this year, Hillman received no offers and returned to Denver on a cheap deal...then he didn't make the team. Somebody like the Chargers (or the Dolphins?) could sign Hillman at some point this year.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman done in Denver    Sat Sep 3, 05:36 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman was released Saturday, Sept. 3.

Footballguys view: The leading rusher last year for the Broncos is now looking for a job. Hillman was on the open market earlier this year, but only the Green Bay Packers showed the slightest bit of interest. The Broncos brought him back for a good price, but Hillman didn't outperform Kapri Bibbs in training camp and the preseason.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman likely out in Denver    Sun Aug 21, 07:47 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman has fallen to No. 3 on the depth chart, and 'it would be a surprise' if they elected to pay the remaining $1.4 million on his contract, according to 9News.com. reporter Mike Klis.

Footballguys view: Devontae Booker appears to have the inside track for the backup job, but Kapri Bibbs has been building his status with the team and could figure into the mix too. Hillman should easily catch on elsewhere after Week 1 once injuries start to hit other team's backfields.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman to work on special teams    Sat Aug 20, 09:52 AM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman is expected to play on some special teams units during the preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers Saturday, Aug. 20, because he is competing for a spot on the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: This is a great sign for Devontae Booker's prospects as the backup to CJ Anderson. If Anderson goes down, Booker should be in line for a big leap in value.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman has competition for job    Mon Aug 15, 10:03 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman is facing a battle for a roster spot, according to head coach Gary Kubiak. He is getting competition from rookie RB Devontae Booker and RB Kapri Bibbs for the right to back up starter RB C.J. Anderson. Hillman is expected to see plenty of action in the preseason game Saturday, Aug. 20, against the San Francisco 49ers. 'Ronnie is in a battle, a helluva a battle with Kapri and Book right now,' Kubiak said Monday, Aug. 15. 'There's no way around that. I'm just being honest with you.'

Footballguys view: Hillman is no lock for the 53-man roster. He led the team in rushing last year, but that was because starter C.J. Anderson was bothered by ankle/toe injuries over the first half of the season. We could see Hillman make the team, but he might only be no.3 on the depth chart. Expect rookie Devontae Booker to win the primary backup job behind Anderson.

Broncos | Two Denver backs listed as co-backups    Mon Aug 8, 07:00 PM

Denver Broncos RBs Ronnie Hillman and Devontae Booker are listed as co-backups behind RB C.J. Anderson in Denver's initial depth chart.

Footballguys view: We're shocked Hillman is listed this high. The team's leading rusher last year is in danger of losing his job as a backup to Booker. The rookie fourth-round pick needs to improve his pass-protection ability if he's going to win the reserve job.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman back at practice    Wed Aug 3, 06:52 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (back) participated in practice Wednesday, Aug. 3.

Footballguys view: Hillman was back at practice, but he didn't do a whole lot. He seemed to get swallowed up too often while other RBs like C.J. Anderson or Devontae Booker made good runs. He led the team in rushing last year, but Hillman is no lock for the 53-man roster this year.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman sits out Monday    Mon Aug 1, 01:22 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (back) did not participate in practice Monday, Aug. 1.

Footballguys view: Hillman took a big shot from LB Zaire Anderson on Sunday, and he had a bruised back. Rookie Devontae Booker may have a chance to overtake Hillman for the backup job behind starter C.J. Anderson.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman tweaks back    Sun Jul 31, 09:18 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman (back) left practice and jogged to the locker room Sunday, July 31, after taking a hard hit to his back.

Footballguys view: Hillman is fighting just to stay on the roster at this point. Kapri Bibbs could push him for that spot and Hillman can't make the club in the tub.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman may not make team    Sun Jul 24, 12:27 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman could be in jeopardy of not making the final roster if he can't contribute more on special teams during training camp.

Footballguys view: Fourth-round pick Devontae Booker looks like the backup to CJ Anderson already, which is great news for those targeting him late in drafts. Anderson has yet to prove that he can make it through a full season as a starter, so Booker could be the back to own by the fantasy playoffs. Anderson and Booker is one of the better handcuff combinations in drafts this year.

Broncos | RB Ronnie Hillman should make 53-man roster    Sun Jul 3, 09:03 PM

Denver Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman should make the 53-man roster according to Troy E. Renck from the Denver Post.

Footballguys view: Hillman's spot on the final roster is not a given. The Broncos are stacked at the position, and rookie Devontae Booker is simply a better all-purpose back. Hillman hit the free agent market earlier this year but he could barely generate any interest. He decided to stay with Denver on a one-year deal, but the team will push him in training camp. They not only have Booker, but Kapri Bibbs looks really good this offseason at OTAs and minicamp. Add in the fact the team is likely to have at least one fullback on the roster and you can see the numbers-crunch developing at running back.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman the favorite for backup    Mon Jun 20, 05:37 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman is still ahead of RB Devontae Booker to back up RB C.J. Anderson, according to Andrew Mason of denverbroncos.com. RB Kapri Bibbs will also compete with Hillman and Booker for backup duties.

Footballguys view: Hillman led the team in rushing last year, but they let him hit the free agent market where he got very little interest. The Broncos brought back Hillman, but only after they paid C.J. Anderson with a much larger deal. Hillman has speed, but in the postseason it was Anderson who led the league in rushing. Anderson should be the team's bellcow, and Hillman is no lock to be his primary backup.

Broncos | Devontae Booker to push for RB2    Mon Jun 20, 08:45 AM

Denver Broncos RB Devontae Booker (knee) ran well after he recovered from a torn meniscus and appears poised to push RB Ronnie Hillman for the No. 2 running back job.

Footballguys view: Booker is a talented all-purpose back. He can make his living between the tackles, is tough to bring down with arm tackles and he's a fantastic receiver out of the backfield. The Broncos are unlikely to use a RBBC this year with C.J. Anderson getting a contract that makes him the third-highest paid RB in 2016. Booker has starter's upside, but fantasy owners should consider him a three-down-back-in-waiting to begin the season. With Anderson's injury history, Booker is a must-handcuff.

Broncos | C.J. Anderson the lead back    Wed May 11, 08:35 PM

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson will receive the bulk of the carries in 2016 with RB Ronnie Hillman providing a change of pace. RB Devontae Booker will have a chance to play on third downs if he can pick up pass protection.

Footballguys view: There has been a misconception about the workload in Denver after the Broncos selected Booker in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL draft. Booker is clearly a three-down-back-in-waiting, but Anderson is their bellcow. He proved last year in the postseason that he could carry a heavy workload, and Anderson received a $5 million bonus back in March as part of his new contract. The language of the NFL is money, and the Broncos have said (with their dollars) that Anderson is clearly the lead back.

Broncos | Different role for C.J. Anderson    Mon Apr 25, 02:17 PM

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson said his role will be different in 2016 because he will control more when he's off the field, as opposed to alternating so much with RB Ronnie Hillman and others.

Footballguys view: Anderson has been paid like a top RB, and the Broncos are expecting top-level production. He just needs to stay healthy because we've seen him be productive at the end of each of the last two seasons. Last year, Anderson's early season was derailed by an ankle/turf toe injury he suffered in Week 1. If healthy, Anderson is a three-down back who can at least be a RB2 with RB1 upside in the Kubiak system.

Broncos | More on Ronnie Hillman deal    Wed Apr 20, 06:51 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman's one-year, $2 million deal comes with a base salary of $1.8 million, including $400,000 fully guaranteed. A $100,000 signing bonus and $100,000 workout bonus were also part of the deal.

Footballguys view: It's a good deal for the Broncos and the best one for Hillman, though he did have his best season as a Bronco. He's a role player and likely just an RB3 unless CJ Anderson stumbles early in the season.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman stays in Denver    Mon Apr 18, 05:49 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman re-signed to a one-year deal Monday, April 18.

Footballguys view: Same as it ever was. Things in the Broncos backfield won't change that much from what we saw in the postseason if starter C.J. Anderson can stay healthy. Anderson led the league in rushing during the postseason, while Hillman barely played as a change-of-pace back. Expect that to be the case once again this year with Hillman staying in Denver.

Broncos | DEN making progress with Ronnie Hillman    Sun Apr 17, 05:22 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman's (Broncos) contract negotiations with the Denver Broncos have heated up recently.

Footballguys view: As we get closer to the draft, it looks like Hillman will return to the Broncos. If signed, he'd give the team a change-of-pace back (again) behind starter C.J. Anderson.

Broncos | Denver talking with Ronnie Hillman    Sat Apr 9, 11:36 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Broncos) has exchanged contract proposals with the Denver Broncos, according to two NFL sources.

Footballguys view: The Broncos may bring Hillman back if the price is right. He's a speed back who doesn't hold up as a starter. If Hillman returns to the Broncos, he'll work as a speedy change-of-pace back behind C.J. Anderson.

Packers | Green Bay eyeing Ronnie Hillman    Mon Mar 28, 03:18 PM

Free-agent RB Ronnie Hillman (Broncos) is one running back the Green Bay Packers have shown interest in.

Footballguys view: Hillman has gotten zero interest on the open market to this point. He's not a feature back, but he's got the speed to at least work in a RBBC. The Packers brought back James Starks and Eddie Lacy finally seems serious about his conditioning. We'll see if they make a move to add the speedster.

Broncos | Denver running game has been producing    Wed Jan 27, 07:27 PM

The Denver Broncos have averaged 29.9 rushing attempts and 128.0 rushing yards (eight touchdowns) in their last nine games with RBs C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman. The Broncos are unbeaten when they record at least 30 rushes and 130-plus rushing yards in a game this season. Anderson has been the more productive runner in a featured role.

Footballguys view: Anderson has been playing backup to Hillman for most of the season. He began the year as the starter, but ankle/toe injuries slowed him down and cost him the starting job. When Anderson gets 14 or more carries this season, the Broncos are undefeated. Facing a tough Panthers defense in Super Bowl 50, the game plan should include plenty of Anderson.

Broncos | Will Denver's running backs stay?    Wed Jan 27, 04:33 PM

Denver Broncos impending free-agent RBs Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson are both slated to become free agents this offseason. Anderson, however, will be a restricted free agent, so he'll be easier to bring back than Hillman, who will be an unrestricted free agent.

Footballguys view: Anderson should be back, and so long as he's healthy he can be an effective starter. The Broncos have been grooming Kapri Bibbs (deep dynasty alert), and we could see him finally make the active roster in 2016. The Broncos may let Hillman move on in free agency, and the Bears or the Dolphins could show interest. Without Hillman, we could see the Broncos make a move to add another running back in free agency or through the draft.

  Patriots | Dont'a Hightower the X-factor?    Thu Jan 21, 06:50 PM

The Denver Broncos were only able to run for 46 yards and no touchdowns on 16 carries with New England Patriots LB Dont'a Hightower in the game in their Week 12 matchup. After Hightower left due to an injury, Broncos RBs C.J. Anderson and Ronnie Hillman piled up 133 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries. LB Jamie Collins also missed that game.

Footballguys view: We'll see how the backfield does with Hightower in the game this week but our own Cecil Lammey recently wrote about how Anderson has to be the key if the Broncos are to have a shot at the Super Bowl this year. He will split carries with Ronnie Hillman, but we like Anderson better and have him right behind bell cow backs David Johnson and Jonathan Stewart.

Broncos | Ronnie Hillman to meet sturdy D    Tue Jan 19, 09:54 PM

Denver Broncos RB Ronnie Hillman will face the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game Sunday, Jan. 24. The Patriots ranked eighth in the NFL against the rush in the regular season, yielding just 98.8 yards per game with eight rushing scores.

Footballguys view: Hillman is a speedy back who is a threat to score anytime he touches the ball. They'll work to get him in space if possible, and all it takes is one big run for him to have a productive day.

Broncos | Denver run game had success against Pats    Tue Jan 19, 04:37 PM

Denver Broncos RBs Ronnie Hillman and C.J. Anderson combined to rush for 172 yards in a Week 12 win over the New England Patriots. Anderson closed out the divisional round win over the Pittsburgh Steelers running well, and he could see the ball more often early against the Patriots.

Footballguys view: Anderson and Hillman could be the key for the Broncos on Sunday. They could continue to use Hillman as the starter, but Anderson has been the more effective back in recent weeks.
