Jets | Joe McKnight unlikely to play    Wed Oct 17, 02:50 PM

New York Jets RB Joe McKnight (ankle) is unlikely to play in Week 7, and with RB Bilal Powell (shoulder) also out, the team's backfield will consist of RBs Shonn Greene, Lex Hilliard and Jonathan Grimes. QB Tim Tebow could also help the ground game out of the Wildcat formation against the New England Patriots.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see more from Grimes here. However, we don't think the Jets will be able to jump start the ground game like they did last week against the Colts. Coming off a monster week, Greene is merely a flex play against the Patriots. The Jets could get down early against New England and be forced into a pass happy offense.

Jets | Sign Lex Hilliard    Tue Oct 2, 08:13 PM

The New York Jets signed free-agent RB Lex Hilliard (Patriots) Tuesday, Oct. 2.

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a big RB who can also play a little Fullback if necessary. He's got a limited skill set as he is only an inside runner. We don't see Hilliard as a fantasy option even in deep dynasty leagues.

Patriots | Sign Lex Hilliard    Tue Sep 4, 05:33 PM

The New England Patriots signed free-agent RB Lex Hilliard (Vikings) Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Footballguys view: Hilliard has a skill set similar to starting RB Stevan Ridley and gives the Patriots more veteran experience in the backfield. His signing could indicate they're worried about the availability of Shane Vereen (foot) in week one.

Vikings | 15 players cut    Fri Aug 31, 10:36 PM

Vikings | Jordan Todman leader for No. 3 RB job    Mon Jun 25, 01:32 PM

Minnesota Vikings RB Jordan Todman is considered the favorite for the No. 3 running back entering training camp. Todman's main competition for the job is expected to be RB Lex Hilliard.

Footballguys view: Todman is a smaller back who can be effectively used as a space runner and receiver out of the backfield. Hilliard is a classic banger, with the size to punish defenders in his path. Behind Adrian Peterson and Toby Gerhart the team may want a smaller change of pace back like Todman.

Dolphins | Lex Hilliard won't be tendered    Tue Mar 13, 02:31 PM

The Miami Dolphins have not offered a tender to restricted free-agent RB Lex Hilliard, a sixth-round pick from 2008, making him an unrestricted free agent. Hilliard started four games for the Dolphins last season, carrying the ball 16 times for 41 yards and a touchdown. He also had five receptions for 49 yards and played on special teams.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins may try to re-sign him to a cheaper deal. If he wants to move on we could see both the Jets and Broncos showing interest in the big back.

Dolphins | Daniel Thomas expected to get more carries    Sat Dec 31, 11:25 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Daniel Thomas is expected to receive more carries in Week 17 because of the injury to RB Reggie Bush (knee). RBs Lex Hilliard and Steve Slaton are also expected to be more involved in the offense.

Footballguys view: Thomas was drafted to be the team's lead back, but injuries and inconsistencies marred his rookie year. We'll see if he can lead the charge for the Dolphins on the ground now that Bush is not going to play.

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard has gotten a first down on all seven third-down opportunities he has been given this season. Head coach Tony Sparano said Hilliard is built to be successful in short yardage situations.

Footballguys view: Hilliard won't see an increased role unless Reggie Bush and Daniel Thomas are injured.

Dolphins | Lex Hilliard gets extra work in practice    Sat Oct 15, 11:01 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard has taken a lot of extra reps in practice this week, signaling RB Daniel Thomas (hamstring) might not be ready in Week 6 against the New York Jets. Officially, Thomas is listed as questionable.

Footballguys view: Thomas is still a decent flex play because the Jets run defense has been down this year, but this definitely something to heed if you are choosing between Thomas and another RB or flex play that is close in the rankings.

Dolphins | Lex Hilliard could see expanded role Week 4    Sat Oct 1, 02:06 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard could receive an expanded role on offense in Week 4 because of the injury to RB Daniel Thomas (hamstring).

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a power runner who can grind down a defense. He's not explosive or creative as a runner, but he is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam.

Dolphins | Lex Hilliard sees goal-line touches    Mon Sep 12, 11:34 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard saw two carries for one yard in the Week 1 game Monday, Sept. 12, against the New England Patriots. Both of his totes came down near the goal line.

Footballguys view: He didn't score or generate much of a head of steam, so don't expect this trend to continue.

Dolphins | Two RBs may be competing for one spot    Thu Sep 1, 03:45 PM

Miami Dolphins RB Larry Johnson and Lex Hilliard may be competing for one spot on the final 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Whoever it is, the #3 RB for Miami could be a hot pickup at some point because of the lack of durability of Reggie Bush and lack of buzz or track record of Daniel Thomas.

Dolphins | Lex Hilliard finds the pylon    Sat Aug 20, 02:36 AM

Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard had six carries for 25 yards and a touchdown in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 19, against the Carolina Panthers. Hilliard is trying to secure the No. 3 job over RBs Kory Sheets and Nic Grigsby.

Footballguys view: Hilliard could be a good player to remember on the waiver wire this year if (when) Reggie Bush gets hurt.

Dolphins | RB Hilliard wants to compete for more playing time    Wed Jun 1, 12:51 PM

Omar Kelly, from the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, reports Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard wants an opportunity to compete for more playing time this year. "I've got to go out and grab it," Hilliard said. "Given the opportunity I'm going to put my best foot forward and give this thing a run, give it the best shot I got [aiming for] the starting position. That's what I want."

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a powerful back but is a backup quality player in our opinion. The Dolphins selected rookie Daniel Thomas to be their featured RB this year. Miami may also keep one of Ronnie Brown or Ricky Williams around to work behind Thomas. Hilliard should make the roster but we don't see him getting much playing time in the regular season unless there's injuries in front of him on the depth chart.

Dolphins | May give Lex Hilliard a shot at getting carries    Mon Mar 7, 03:13 PM

The Miami Dolphins appear to be warming to the idea of giving RB Lex Hilliard a legitimate opportunity to earn carries next season, reports Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post.

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a bruising back who can wear down a defense as the game goes on. He's looked good in limited duty during his time with the Dolphins and could be a nice power option in the team's RBBC.

Dolphins | Jeff Ireland has high opinion of Lex Hilliard    Fri Feb 4, 04:05 PM

Dolphins | Two RBs expected to return    Fri Jan 28, 01:15 PM

Miami Dolphins RBs Lex Hilliard and Kory Sheets are expected to be with the team next season, reports Ben Volin, of the Palm Beach Post.

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a big back who runs with a lot of power. He is difficult to bring down when he gets a head of steam, and is a good option at the goalline. Sheets is an extremely versatile back who has value as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He also was known for a wicked stiff arm while in college.

Dolphins | Sheets could pressure Hilliard for 4th RB spot    Wed Jun 23, 06:26 PM

Barry Jackson, from the Miami Herald, reports players have raved about Kory Sheets, and if he's impressive on kickoff returns he will put serious heat on Lex Hilliard for the No. 4 running back job.

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a bruising power back, but Sheets is more versatile. Sheets has one of the best stiff arms in the game, and is a slashing RB who is not afraid to lower his shoulders and run inside. He is also a good receiver out of the backfield. This battle may come down to pass protection, and we'd give Hilliard the edge in that competition.

Dolphins | Would be comfortable with Hilliard as starter    Sat Jan 2, 11:35 AM

Brian Biggane, of the Palm Beach Post, reports Miami Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano said he has reached a point with RB Lex Hilliard that if he is the best option to start for the team in Week 17, it's not a problem. 'The progression with Lex the last couple weeks has been really good,' Sparano said. 'I feel really comfortable with Lex. It's been good we've been able to see him that way.' RB Ricky Williams (shoulder) remains questionable for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Lex Hilliard is the big power back from Montana, but he's not just a one-dimensional player. Hilliard has good acceleration and is hard to bring down when he gets a head of steam. He is also a capable receiver out of the backfield, and can break through arm tackles in the open field.

Dolphins | Hilliard likely to be top RB backup    Thu Nov 19, 11:49 AM

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports Miami Dolphins RB Lex Hilliard likely will be the team's primary backup at running back after the season-ending injury to RB Ronnie Brown (foot, ankle).

Footballguys view: Hilliard is a big power back that can pick up a lot of yards after contact. He's not a blazer, and it takes time for him to build up his speed. He doesn't have a second gear in the open field, and his game is to punish the defense up the gut. Hilliard has good balance and pad level, so he's hard to bring down once he builds up a head of steam. He's not much of a receiver out of the backfield, so we may see a little bit of undrafted rookie Kory Sheets as a change of pace runner.
