Jaguars | Jacksonville not ready to name starting QB    Thu Aug 24, 11:30 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Chad Henne and Blake Bortles could play in the final preseason game, according to head coach Doug Marrone. Marrone said he has no timetable for naming a starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: There's no way to spin this as good news for the Jaguars. If Chad Henne is an upgrade at quarterback then we were already looking at one of the worst offenses in the league.

Jaguars | Chad Henne to start Thursday    Wed Aug 23, 07:13 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will be the starting quarterback for the preseason game against the Carolina Panthers Thursday, Aug. 24. QB Blake Bortles is also expected to receive some playing time with the first-team offense during the game.

Footballguys view: Henne is competing with Bortles for the starting job. No matter who wins, there's not a lot of fantasy value to be mined from either player. The Jaguars want to run the ball more this year, but they need rookie (and potential superstar) RB Leonard Fournette to be healthy.

Jaguars | Jacksonville QBs share snaps    Mon Aug 21, 07:01 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QBs Blake Bortles and Chad Henne received an equal amount of snaps with the first-team offense during practice Monday, Aug. 21.

Footballguys view: We feel like Jaguars fans need something to smile about when considering their two options at quarterback. Head coach Doug Marrone is not ready to name a starter for the third preseason game and wants to see them practice Tuesday, Aug. 22, before making a decision.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles not a lock to start    Thu Aug 17, 11:50 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said QB Blake Bortles has to earn the starting quarterback job and indicated QB Chad Henne has a chance to take the job. Marrone said he is looking for the best person to lead the offense.

Footballguys view: That Marrone is saying this after two preseason games is a sign that Bortles is in trouble. Henne is looking like the Week 1 starter unless Bortles turns this around.

Jaguars | Chad Henne is No. 2 QB    Wed Aug 2, 10:00 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne is the team's No. 2 quarterback and will not compete with QB Brandon Allen for the job even though Allen has performed well so far during training camp.

Footballguys view: That might be the case while the team is still mathematically alive for the playoffs, but if the season is lost at any point, they might throw Allen out there to see what they have before deciding whether to invest big in a young quarterback in 2018 - assuming Blake Bortles is a reason the season was lost.

Jaguars | Chad Henne reworks deal    Wed Feb 15, 02:50 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne has agreed to sign a restructured contract and will remain with the Jaguars, according to a source. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

The Jacksonville Jaguars re-signed backup QB Chad Henne to a two-year, $8 million deal Thursday, Feb. 18, that includes playing time-related incentives.

Footballguys view: It's a solid deal for both parties. It's not expensive, the Jaguars keep a competent backup and Henne gets paid to carry a clip-board.

Jaguars | Chad Henne close to re-signing    Thu Feb 18, 11:09 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent QB Chad Henne is close to re-signing with the Jaguars Thursday, Feb. 18.

Footballguys view: Henne is good insurance against a Blake Bortles injury, but not much more.

Jaguars | Chad Henne open to re-signing    Mon Jan 25, 06:51 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent QB Chad Henne said he is open to re-signing with the Jaguars this offseason but may want to see if there opportunities for him to compete for a starting job with another team.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine other teams lined up around the block for Henne. If the Jaguars want a veteran backup behind Blake Bortles, then they could decide to just keep Henne.

Jaguars | Chad Henne interested in return    Sun Jan 3, 09:52 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars impending free-agent QB Chad Henne said Sunday, Jan. 3, he is interested in returning to the team. He expects to meet with general manager Dave Caldwell this week. 'It could happen that I sign back here right away, but it would have to be the right circumstances,' Henne said.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles enters game    Sun Sep 21, 02:45 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles entered the team's Week 3 game in the second half after QB Chad Henne was benched.

Footballguys view: Bortles running ability alone puts him instantly on the fantasy radar, but he does have a poor offensive line and green, oft injured wide receiver corps.

Jaguars | Chad Henne still the starter    Mon Sep 15, 01:48 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne is still the starting quarterback for now, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: And here we see the stubbornness of Bradley. Henne is a poor starter, and he quite frankly doesn't give the team the best chance to win. Blake Bortles was drafted in the first round of the 2014 NFL draft, and he's the QB of the future. Might as well start playing him now to give him valuable experience.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles whispers begin    Mon Sep 15, 10:03 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles was not considered to play in Week 2 as QB Chad Henne was sacked 10 times in the game. However, head coach Gus Bradley wouldn't comment on whether they will consider starting Bortles in Week 3.

Footballguys view: What are they waiting for? Yes, we know--the team really WANTS to keep him on the bench his rookie year for, um, development purposes (?). The fact of the matter is that Henne is a poor starter, and Bortles could be gaining valuable experience this year. We'll see if the change is made in the near future.

Jaguars | Chad Henne to start in Week 1    Sat Aug 23, 01:00 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will start the Week 1 game ahead of rookie QB Blake Bortles, head coach Gus Bradley said Friday, Aug. 22.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars have been very clear about their QB situation. Henne will begin the season as the starter, even though Bortles has been impressing in camp and the preseason. At some point this year, we think Bortles will get a chance as the top quarterback.

Jaguars | Pleased with Blake Bortles' progress    Fri Aug 15, 06:04 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles has impressed the team with his progress in training camp and the preseason so far, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Jaguars | Chad Henne to start Week 1    Fri Aug 15, 02:56 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will start in the team's Week 1 game, according to head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: Rookie first-round pick Blake Bortles has been impressing during the preseason, but the team is steadfast that he'll begin the season on the bench. Henne is a seasoned vet, but we don't think he can hold off Bortles all season long. If (when) Jacksonville struggles, the team could turn things over to Bortles.

Jaguars | Chad Henne performs well    Fri Aug 15, 12:31 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne threw for 130 yards and a touchdown in the team's second preseason game against the Chicago Bears Thursday, Aug. 14. Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will play the first half of the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 14, with QB Blake Bortles playing the second half.

Footballguys view: Bortles needs to start getting reps with the ones before we can think about him starting sooner than later, but his performance in the first preseason game with the backups is a great start.

Jaguars | Chad Henne is starter    Sat Aug 9, 01:09 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne is the team's starting quarterback, head coach Gus Bradley reiterated Saturday, Aug. 9.

Footballguys view: There will be a point this season that Bradley's need to reiterate that Henne is the starter will actually be a sign that he won't be the starter for much longer. We're not there yet.

Jaguars | Chad Henne not in danger    Thu Jul 31, 01:24 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne is in no danger of losing his starting job at this point, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Henne has looked comfortable during practice and is performing well.

Footballguys view: Henne is a seasoned veteran, and the team is turning to him as the starter this year. If Henne struggles, there's a chance that Bortles could replace him later in the season.

Jaguars | Chad Henne impressing    Mon Jul 28, 02:54 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne has been stellar in the team's first three days of training camp, according to head coach Gus Bradley. Bradley added that Henne looks comfortable and has shown a mastery of the offense.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars are going to hold first-round pick Blake Bortles on the bench if they can. If Henne comes through as a solid starter, then we may not see the rookie in 2014. However, if Henne starts to struggle, the team could mix Bortles into the lineup towards the end of the year.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles could start preseason game    Mon Jul 21, 03:01 AM

Although the Jacksonville Jaguars coaching staff is still high on QB Chad Henne, coach Gus Bradley said QB Blake Bortles could start a preseason game. "It would be late in the preseason if he did, and we'll see how things go," said Bradley. "We're really excited about Chad and what he's going to do so we'll see how it goes with him until that fourth preseason game."

Footballguys view: The Jaguars have been clear since day one that they'd like to keep Bortles on the bench this year. We'll see Chad Henne as the team's starter to begin the year, but Bortles might get a few starts near the end of the year if the team feels he's ready.

Jaguars | Chad Henne will start    Thu Jul 3, 10:40 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne is the no-doubt starter, according to beat writer Ryan O'Halloran. O'Halloran predicts rookie QB Blake Bortles could be the starter by Week 8 against the Miami Dolphins. Another possibility is Week 12 after the bye week.

Footballguys view: Henne is going to get his start in an offense which isn't quite built yet and we don't see him as worthy of a roster spot, rating him as a almost a QB4. Bortles has intriguing upside but you can grab him on waivers well after your fantasy draft and even then he's no more than an emergency fill-in.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles will receive first-team reps    Thu Jun 26, 01:05 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blake Bortles will receive first-team repetitions in training camp to experience 'that type of environment,' according to Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: It's a wise move for the Jaguars to prepare Bortles as quickly as he can to be the starter. We're likely to see Chad Henne begin the year as the starter, but Bortles is the eventual starter. At the very least we think the Jaguars will start Bortles a small handful of games at the end of the season to get him ready for 2015.

Jaguars | Chad Henne has support    Thu Jun 26, 12:55 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne has support within the organization and the team is rallying behind him, according to Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley.

Footballguys view: The team really wants Bortles to sit for a year to make sure they don't repeat their error in rushing Blaine Gabbert into the lineup before he was ready. For fantasy purposes, it's unlikely he will have much fantasy value as anything but an emergency start so don't burn a roster spot on him.

Jaguars | Chad Henne gets praise    Tue Jun 3, 01:19 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley praised QB Chad Henne, saying Henne has practiced well during OTAs.

Footballguys view: Henne is a seasoned veteran, so going through minicamps is no big deal. We're likely to see him begin the season as the team's starter. Blake Bortles was selected with the 3rd-overall pick in the 2014 NFL draft, and he is the quarterback of the future.

Jaguars | Want to give Blake Bortles a year to develop    Wed May 21, 08:36 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley reiterated that the team wants to give QB Blake Bortles a year to develop behind QB Chad Henne. 'We really felt comfortable with (Henne) coming back, with a another year in the system,' Bradley said. 'And I think it gave us flexibility. Then when Blake was there available for us, we really wanted to capture that opportunity. We do feel good about where Blake's at, but we feel like this time that he has under Chad - a year to develop - will be really good in the end result.'

Footballguys view: Bortles has some dual threat capabilities and two young wide receivers to grow with, but he probably will not relevant in fantasy leagues this year. This development (if the Jaguars follow through) will likely enhance his chances of being a long-term success. Whether Bortles or Henne quarterbacks the team, the Jaguars are probably not going to produce any true fantasy studs this year.

Jaguars | Blake Bortles won't start    Fri May 9, 12:23 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager David Caldwell said QB Chad Henne will enter the 2014 season as the starting quarterback, with QB Blake Bortles getting a chance to develop without the pressure of having to win games. 'It's such an important position in this league and you want to do it right,' Caldwell said. 'That's what we're about. ... We have to make it work. We can't just throw him out there. We've seen what happens when that happens.'

Jaguars | Chad Henne to be starter for OTAs    Fri Mar 7, 05:10 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley expects QB Chad Henne to be the team's starting quarterback during the team's offseason training activities.

Footballguys view: Any rookie the team may add with the third-overall pick in the draft will have to work his way up the depth chart. We're expecting the Jaguars to take Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M), and we would be shocked if Henne was the starter in Week 1.

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will make $8 million as part of his two-year deal, and the contract includes $4.5 million guaranteed in the first year, according to a league source.

Jaguars | Will meet with Chad Henne this week    Thu Feb 20, 03:08 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars GM Dave Caldwell said the team will meet with representatives for QB Chad Henne this week, and that he does not think Henne will hit free agency.

Footballguys view: Henne gives the team valuable veteran insurance. They will select a quarterback with a premium pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Henne could push the rookie for the starting job, and be a quality backup.

Jaguars | Plan to speak with Chad Henne    Fri Feb 7, 01:18 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said he plans to speak with the representatives for impending free-agent QB Chad Henne before free agency kicks off March 11.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Henne will work well as a veteran backup to any quarterback the team adds in the 2014 NFL draft. 2011 first-round pick Blaine Gabbert is likely done with his time in Jacksonville.

Jaguars | Blaine Gabbert likely done in Jacksonville    Sat Feb 1, 08:55 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert is unlikely to be back with the team, as they have made it known they would like to re-sign QB Chad Henne, and plan to draft at least one, or perhaps two, quarterbacks in the 2014 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Gabbert was selected to be the franchise quarterback in the first round of the 2011 NFL draft. He failed to impress during his time in Jacksonville, and Gabbert will now be looking for a fresh start somewhere else.

Jaguars | Plan to re-sign Chad Henne    Sat Feb 1, 08:55 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are interested in re-signing impending free-agent QB Chad Henne, who started 13 games in the 2013 season.

Footballguys view: The Jaguars could bring Henne back for veteran insurance. They are likely to select a rookie quarterback with a premium pick in the 2014 NFL draft. Word is they love Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville). We'll see if he can fall to Jacksonville's pick at third overall.

Jaguars | Will talk to Chad Henne before free agency    Fri Jan 31, 01:52 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager Dave Caldwell said he will reach out to the agent for QB Chad Henne before free agency starts.

Jaguars | Expected to talk with Chad Henne soon    Wed Jan 29, 02:38 PM

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to begin contract talks with impending free-agent QB Chad Henne over the next few weeks.

Footballguys view: Henne could stick around and give the team veteran depth at the position. They're likely to select a quarterback in the first-round of the NFL draft. Many feel the team wants Teddy Bridgewater (Louisville) above all others. Henne could be a veteran mentor for any rookie they add this offseason.

Jaguars | Not giving up on Blaine Gabbert    Tue Jan 7, 02:51 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Jedd Fisch said he saw improvement in QB Blaine Gabbert in the second half of the season despite the fact that the team went with QB Chad Henne down the stretch. 'I feel like you certainly see a nice evolution,' Fisch said. 'Of course, it's different playing games, but I do think his maturity level showed through. We could have been a storyline and we weren't. When you make a change in the starting quarterback, that can happen. He handled himself in such a professional manner that maybe there was growth from a maturity standpoint for him.' There is speculation that Gabbert will be traded or released this offseason, but general manager Dave Caldwell said he would like Gabbert to return and compete for the job.

Jaguars | Blaine Gabbert to be active    Wed Oct 23, 01:23 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (hamstring) will be active in Week 8 against the San Francisco 49ers, but he'll serve as the backup to QB Chad Henne. Henne has outplayed Gabbert by completing 59.5 percent of his passes for 1,222 yards and two touchdowns and five interceptions. Gabbert has completed 48.8 percent of his passes for 481 yards, one TD and seven picks in his three starts.

Footballguys view: Henne is just a better option for the Jaguars than Gabbert. It's not saying much, since Henne hasn't won them a game. However, he's better at moving the offense and has great chemistry with Justin Blackmon. Gabbert may have played his last down for the Jaguars.

Jaguars | Chad Henne to remain starter    Wed Oct 23, 11:28 AM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Chad Henne will remain the team's starting quarterback, even when QB Blaine Gabbert (hamstring) is healthy.

Footballguys view: Finally Gus Bradley is coming to his senses. Earlier in the year we heard the standard coach speak of "Gabbert is still our starter." Gabbert is a first-round bust and the Jaguars will be looking for another quarterback in next year's draft.   Jaguars | Blaine Gabbert out another week    Mon Oct 14, 04:02 PM

Jacksonville Jaguars QB Blaine Gabbert (hamstring) will miss Week 7 against the San Diego Chargers, giving QB Chad Henne another start. We'll get him to start throwing on the side. We'll see when Blaine comes back but right now Chad is our quarterback for the San Diego game.'

Footballguys view: Henne threw for over 300 yards against the Broncos in Week 6. He showed strong chemistry with wide receiver Justin Blackmon, targeting him 20 times on Sunday. That chemistry will carry over into every week so long as Henne is starting.
