Lions | Defenses doubling Calvin Johnson Tue Dec 18, 05:16 PM
Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the Arizona Cardinals used double coverage on WR Calvin Johnson on almost every play and had several defenders on him at the line of scrimmage on several occasions. 'Early in the season, we were facing defenses that were more prevent-type defenses, where they were just trying to prevent a big play,' Schwartz said. '(They) had respect for a lot of other players. This game, they took the approach of saying, 'If Calvin can't make the play, then we're going to challenge all the rest of the guys.'' WRs Nate Burleson (knee), Ryan Broyles (knee) and Titus Young and TE Brandon Pettigrew (ankle) all were not active last week. WRs Kris Durham and Brian Robiskie and TEs Tony Scheffler and Will Heller had a combined seven catches for only 77 yards. The Atlanta Falcons are expected to employ similar tactics as the Cardinals in order to try to take Johnson out of the game in Week 16. Johnson still managed 10 catches for 121 yards against Arizona.
Footballguys view: This isn't news, it's called every week for Don Mega. Defenses are unwise to put single coverage on Johnson and thus he sees a lot of bracket coverage every week. |

Lions | Heller likely to enter camp as No. 2 TE Thu Jun 18, 12:22 PM
Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions TE Will Heller likely will enter training camp as the team's No. 2 tight end behind TE Brandon Pettigrew.
Footballguys view: The Lions want to be a run heavy team in 2009, and Heller has exceptional blocking ability. He's familiar with the system because he played under Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan when they were both in Miami, so it should be an easy transition for him to make. While not known for his receiving ability, Heller does have solid hands and Linehan feels he could use him more in the passing game if need be. |
