The Green Bay Packers may cut ties with DE Justin Harrell. He is due $575,000 in a roster bonus soon, and it is unlikely the Packers will want to invest any more money in the oft-injured lineman. Harrell's agent has not heard from the Packers and said he does not have any indication from the team they are looking to cut Harrell.

Green Bay Packers DL Justin Harrell (back) did not participate in practice Tuesday, Aug. 17, because of a tight lower back, reports Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. It is the first time Harrell's chronically injured back has flared up since the start of training camp. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he hopes Harrell can get past this injury because he has performed well during camp and in the team's first preseason game. The team could consider releasing Harrell if he is not able to get past the back injury before the start of the season, but he is in their defensive line rotation.

Tom Silverstein and Bob McGinn, of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers DE Justin Harrell (back) saw a back specialist at Northwestern University recently and was assured he would not risk permanent damage if he attempts another comeback. Harrell is back to jogging and is working to rehabilitate the injury so that he can get back to where he was at the start of training camp. Harrell said, "He (the back specialist) was basically just reassuring me that I'm not doing any damage so down the road I won't be able to walk or will be in a wheelchair. That was my main concern. If my back is feeling like this right now, five, 10 years from now I don't want to be where I can't walk. Once I got that reassurance, it's pretty much trying to get back out there."

Tom Pelissero, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers DL Justin Harrell (back) fears his NFL career is over. Harrell said, "Anytime you have back surgery, it's always a red flag, and then having two in one year." He added, "Hey, I don't want to think about that right now, because hopefully, that's (not going to happen). But it's definitely in my mind." The bulging disc in his lower back that required two surgeries flared up again a week into training camp, and it has not gotten much better since he first missed practice Aug. 6. The team is sending out studies to specialists to try to come up with another game plan for Harrell.
| Footballguys view: We feel for Harrell. It's terrible to feel like your career is over before it really had a chance to begin. The Packers will need big bodies up front in their new 3-4 D, but at least on the first team they should be fine with Cullen Jenkins, BJ Raji, and Ryan Pickett. |

"He's having back spasms," head coach Mike McCarthy said. "He's fighting through it. We're treating him, and it's a little bit of a setback for him."
