Browns | Two players waived Mon Sep 30, 05:23 PM
The Cleveland Browns have waived RB Montario Hardesty and WR Joshua Cooper.
Footballguys view: Hardesty's pro career can be summed up by "what might have been." He's a talented player but failed to play up to his potential because of injuries. |

The Cleveland Browns plan to release RB Montario Hardesty (knee) from the Injured Reserve list Monday, Sept. 30 after team doctors medically clear him. He had arthroscopic surgery on his left knee late in August.
Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Hardesty's pro career will always be "what might have been." He's a talented runner but a long injury history dating back to college has prevented him from playing up to his potential. |

Browns | Brandon Jackson now No. 2 RB Tue Aug 27, 09:22 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Brandon Jackson is now the team's primary backup to RB Trent Richardson after the loss of both RBs Montario Hardesty (knee) and Dion Lewis (fibula) to the season-ending Injured Reserve list. 'Brandon is a reliable guy,' head coach Rob Chudzinski said Tuesday, Aug. 27. 'I have no issues with Brandon. Trent will be the guy we're counting on in a lot of different ways. We have to do a good job of keeping him fresh throughout the course of the season.'
Footballguys view: As the backup to Trent Richardson we may see Jackson get a few snaps here or there during the season. Richardson is incredibly talented but with a heavy workload will need a breather from time to time. We've also seen Richardson slowed down by nagging injuries as a rookie. |

Browns | Montario Hardesty lands on IR Tue Aug 27, 09:14 PM
The Cleveland Browns placed RB Montario Hardesty (knee) on the season-ending Injured Reserve list Tuesday, Aug. 27. His contract expires after the season, and he is not expected to be brought back.
Footballguys view: Hardesty has always had durability problems and that didn't change this season. He's been injury prone dating back to his days in college at Tennessee. We'll see if he can get healthy and impress with a fresh start in 2014. |

Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee) is expected to miss six weeks after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery earlier this week.

Browns | Montario Hardesty to miss two games Thu Aug 15, 07:09 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee) will miss at least the first two weeks of the regular season after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday, Aug. 15. Hardesty has had surgery on both of the anterior cruciate ligaments in both of his knees already. He's missed most of training camp with a hamstring issue and a dislocated right thumb earlier this week.
Footballguys view: Hardesty has a long and storied injury history dating back to his days in college at Tennessee. The Browns could decide to cut Hardesty and move on with other options behind starter Trent Richardson. RBs Dion Lewis and Brandon Jackson are in the mix for the primary backup job. |

Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (knee, thumb) will have arthroscopic knee surgery Thursday, Aug. 15. He also recently suffered a dislocated right thumb.

Browns | Montario Hardesty has dislocated thumb Wed Aug 14, 12:15 AM
Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (thumb) has been ruled out for the preseason game Thursday, Aug. 15, against the Detroit Lions due to a dislocated right thumb. 'We padded him up, and he was OK,' head coach Rob Chudzinski said Tuesday, Aug. 13. 'He went out and did some individual drills in practice today, and we'll see about him for next week.'
Footballguys view: Hardesty needs to stay on the field to make the team with Dion Lewis impressing. At this rate, he will be looking for work come week 1. He's no longer the presumptive handcuff to Trent Richardson. |

Browns | Montario Hardesty injured Mon Aug 12, 06:45 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty (thumb) suffered a right thumb injury during practice Monday, Aug. 12.
Footballguys view: The last thing Hardesty needs is another injury. Durability has been a big problem for him dating back to his time in college at Tennessee. He's been held back in training camp by a hamstring injury and is in danger of losing his spot on the final roster. Dion Lewis has been doing a good job as the Browns' RB2 behind starter Trent Richardson. |

Browns | Dion Lewis appears to be in lead for No. 2 RB job Fri Aug 9, 03:56 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Dion Lewis is believed to have an edge over RB Montario Hardesty (hamstring) for the No. 2 running back job because Hardesty has missed time with a hamstring injury. Lewis rushed for 12 yards on five carries and caught a 16-yard pass during the team's first preseason game.
Footballguys view: The emergence of Lewis could bounce Hardesty off the final roster. Lewis is built low to the ground and runs with a lot of balance. He can bounce off would be tackles and keeps his feet after contact. He's a compact runner with good vision and instincts for running the ball. Lewis may end up being the primary backup behind Trent Richardson in 2013. |

Browns | Dion Lewis could be candidate for No. 2 RB job Thu Aug 8, 04:13 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Dion Lewis could compete with RB Montario Hardesty for the No. 2 running back job if he is able to hold onto the football and show he can pass protect despite his small size.
Footballguys view: Lewis has good balance, pad level, and lateral agility when running the ball. He is tough in between the tackles and can make defenders miss if he gets to the second level. We'll see if he can win the RB2 job behind Trent Richardson. If he does then Montario Hardesty could be on the roster bubble. |

Browns | Montario Hardesty may get cut Wed Aug 7, 08:26 AM
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty's (hamstring) roster spot is in jeopardy, but if he can get healthy, he has a decent shot to make the team.
Footballguys view: This was a sentiment tossed around earlier this offseason. Hardesty is talented but oft-injured and not tied to this new regime. Backup RBs Dion Lewis and Chris Ogbonnaya have been impressing in camp while Hardesty has been dealing with yet another injury. |

Browns | Dion Lewis working with second team Tue Jul 30, 08:08 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Dion Lewis has started working with the second-team offense, and he has turned heads with his speed, moves and catching ability. Lewis has been seeing more work with RB Montario Hardesty (hamstring) sidelined with a hamstring injury.
Footballguys view: Some feel that Hardesty may be on the roster bubble because of his durability concerns. Lewis has been a standout so far in camp and is an interesting name to keep in mind if you play in a deep dynasty league. He's a back who is known for running with good balance, pad level, and quick initial burst. |

Browns | Montario Hardesty could be on bubble Wed Jul 17, 05:43 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Montario Hardesty could be on the roster bubble during training camp because offensive coordinator Norv Turner likes running backs that are able to catch the ball and Hardesty has been a liability as a receiver.
Footballguys view: We have a difficult time believing Hardesty is on the bubble. This offseason while Trent Richardson was out (shin) we saw Hardesty get most of the first team reps for the Browns. |

Browns | Two expected to compete for No. 2 RB job Fri Jun 7, 02:30 PM
Cleveland Browns RBs Montario Hardesty and Chris Ogbonnaya are expected to compete for the No. 2 running back during training camp.
Footballguys view: Hardesty is the more talented back but durability issues have plagued his career dating back to his college days at Tennessee. 'Silent G' (Obgonnaya) is a good all-purpose runner who can contribute between the tackles or as a receiver out of the backfield. |

Browns | RBs seeing a lot of passes Tue May 28, 07:46 PM
Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Norv Turner's system is throwing a lot of passes to the running back position so far this offseason. RB Trent Richardson caught 51 balls last year, but RBs Dion Lewis and Montario Hardesty have also shown the ability to catch passes.
Footballguys view: Turner knows how to get RBs to produce up to their potential. If Richardson can stay healthy he could be a top 5 fantasy RB. His current ADP is RB7 and he's coming off the board at 1.07. |

Browns | Evaluating Montario Hardesty Sun Feb 10, 10:54 PM
The new coaching staff is spending a lot of time evaluating RB Montario Hardesty, who had 271 rushing yards and a 4.2 yards per carry average on 65 rushes in 2012. Hardesty has one year remaining on his contract at $630,000, so he would be cheap to cut or keep for depth.
Footballguys view: Hardesty looked good last year in a limited role. He's better used as a backup where his touches can be limited as durability has been an issue for Hardesty dating back to his college days. |

Browns | Could reduce Trent Richardson's workload Sat Dec 15, 08:18 AM
Updating a previous item, Cleveland Browns offensive coordinator Brad Childress said the team is 'not there' when it comes to benching RB Trent Richardson (ribs), but he could see a reduction in snaps. 'Are we going to give him a series every now and then, or every third series or something to that nature?' Childress said. 'Yeah, we talk about that.' The lack of big plays has been a problem for Richardson. He is seventh in the NFL in attempts yet has just two plays for more than 20 yards. Meanwhile, RB Montario Hardesty is averaging 4.7 yards per carry this season.
Footballguys view: Richardson has not been 100% in weeks yet is still putting up RB2 numbers. Hardesty has been looking good as a backup and could get a few more carries this season. |

Browns | No setbacks for Trent Richardson Sun Oct 21, 07:05 PM
Updating a previous report, Cleveland Browns head coach Pat Shurmur said Sunday, Oct. 21, that RB Trent Richardson (ribs) did not suffer any setbacks with his injury in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts. Richardson struggled, and Shurmur said the Colts stacked the box, so the team elected to keep passing. Shurmur also said he played RB Montario Hardesty more because he didn't feel Richardson was as effective as usual early on.
Footballguys view: We have to wonder if Richardson is going to be the type of back that we can't trust when he is listed as questionable. The injury allowed him to practice and get cleared to start, but he couldn't produce or earn the coach's trust while his performance was hampered by it. |

Browns | Trent Richardson to wear flak jacket Thu Oct 18, 07:01 PM
Cleveland Browns RB Trent Richardson (chest, rib) will wear a flak jacket in Week 7 against the Indianapolis Colts. Richardson is expected to start in the game, and he said the extra padding won't change his rushing style. 'My game's not going to be no different,' Richardson said. 'I'm still going to play physical and play hard-nosed football, smash-mouth football. That's what I was brought up to do, and that's how I know how to play football.' RBs Montario Hardesty and Chris Ogbonnaya will step in if Richardson is limited at all, and head coach Pat Shurmur is confident in the backups if needed.

Browns | Backup RB battle to be heated Sun Jul 22, 11:54 PM
The only real competition at the running back position for the Cleveland Browns is to determine who will become the primary backup to RB Trent Richardson. The team likely will favor whoever proves to be the best receiving threat and pass protector, especially on third down. Contributions on special teams might be a deciding factor, too. Head coach Pat Shurmur said RBs Montario Hardesty and Brandon Jackson would both play this year, but it is uncertain who will have a more prominent role. RB Chris Ogbonnaya is also in the mix, and his ability on special teams will help his cause should one of the others falter or suffer injury.
Footballguys view: We like Hardesty's natural ability but he's been unable to stay healthy during most of his college and pro career. Jackson is looking to make a comeback and has good versatility because of his receiving ability. |

The Browns are adamant that they want their No. 3 running back to chip in on special teams. It's uncertain if Hardesty can, or is willing, to do so.
Footballguys view: We'll see how this RB situation unfolds in Cleveland. Right now behind Richardson the depth chart is far from set. Hardesty has the most talent, but Ogbonnaya is more versatile and not quite as injury prone. |

Jackson showed solid blocking and catching skills, as well, which is what the coaches expect in the West Coast offense.
Footballguys view: Jackson is a nice fit for the West Coast offense because of his versatile skill set. However, we think Hardesty (if healthy) could win the backup job behind Trent Richardson because he has a more elite skill set. Jackson could stick on the final roster as the third RB if he can beat out Ogbonnaya. |
