Saints | Lynell Hamilton released    Thu Aug 4, 09:16 PM

The New Orleans Saints have released RB Lynell Hamilton.

Footballguys view: Hamilton was set up to be the pounder for the Saints last year, but he tore his ACL, the Saints discovered Chris Ivory, and now Hamilton in New Orleans is history.

Saints | Reggie Bush may not be done in New Orleans    Fri Apr 29, 01:46 PM

Continuing a previous storyline, New Orleans Saints RB Reggie Bush, via Twitter, congratulated rookie RB Mark Ingram on being selected by the Saints and added Ingram 'will be a great addition to the Saints backfield just as he was in Alabama.' This followed Bush's tweet saying: 'It's been fun New Orleans.' It sounded like Bush thought the addition of Ingram to the Saints will push him out, which may be true. Bush, however, may have overreacted.

Footballguys view: One would think Pierre Thomas is the one with a ticket out of town, but Bush has to know he's underperformed his draft spot (and pay) by quite a margin. Mark Ingram may be in a crowded backfield, but that could clear up quick and his value could be very very good.

Saints | Lynell Hamilton waived/injured    Sat Aug 14, 02:54 PM

The New Orleans Saints have waived injured RB Lynell Hamilton (knee), reports Jeff Duncan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Hamilton will be placed on Injured Reserve if he clears waivers.

Footballguys view: Hamilton has fought through injuries dating back to his days at San Diego State, so we'll see if he can make another comeback next year. In the meantime the Saints will look to someone like P.J. Hill to elevate his game in place of Hamilton.

Saints | Lynell Hamilton injury update    Wed Aug 11, 04:50 PM

Updating a previous report, an MRI has confirmed that New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton (knee) did suffer a torn anterior cruciate ligament and will miss the entire 2010 season, reports Jason La Canfora, of NFL Network.

Footballguys view: The loss of Hamilton could lead to the team adding a free agent running back like Ladell Betts.

Saints | Lynell Hamilton injured in practice Wednesday    Wed Aug 11, 11:41 AM

New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton (knee) went down late in practice Wednesday, Aug. 11, with a knee injury, according to Jeff Duncan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune. Hamilton is undergoing tests on the knee, according to head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: Hamilton struggled with injuries during his time in college, and some feel this injury could be a season ending ACL. That would be a huge blow to the Saints backfield, and leave only P.J. Hill as the backup behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. If Hamilton is lost for the year we expect the Saints to watch the camp cut list for guys like Herb Donaldson (Dallas) or Keiland Williams (Washington).

Saints | Lynell Hamilton to serve as No. 3 running back    Sat Jul 24, 03:38 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton is expected to serve as the team's No. 3 running back, replacing Mike Bell, reports Matt LeBlanc, of HoumaToday.com.

Footballguys view: Hamilton has been quietly sticking around on the Saints roster for some time now after being undrafted out of San Diego State. He's been on the field and received important carries for the Saints before, and could be in for an even bigger role this year because Mike Bell moved on to Philadelphia.

The Associated Press reports New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton and TE David Thomas both worked as fullbacks in practice Thursday, Oct. 29.

Saints | Three RBs saw time with first team Wednesday    Thu Sep 24, 12:38 PM

Updating a previous report, Brian Allee-Walsh, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RBs Reggie Bush, Pierre Thomas and Lynell Hamilton saw time with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Sept. 24. Hamilton said the coaches told him to be ready to play in Week 3.

Footballguys view: There is obviously some nice fantasy production to be had from this backfield, but this week against the Bills it's hard to say who will emerge as the go-to running back on the ground. Reggie Bush will still do his thing as a receiver, but the Saints shouldn't give him the bulk of the carries on Sunday. Thomas is coming back from his knee injury, but commented last week that he didn't like running with a brace on. Lynell Hamilton may be the Saints back to go with this week. We like his power between the tackles, instincts, decisiveness, and footwork when running inside.

Saints | Hamilton expects big role Week 3    Wed Sep 23, 06:57 PM

Jeff Duncan, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton said he received the most snaps with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Sept. 23, and expects to receive a heavy workload in Week 3.

Footballguys view: The Saints offense is good that any competent back can put up numbers if they get a significant number of touches. Hamilton should be picked up in all leagues just on the possibility of getting most of the work on Sunday.

Saints | Hamilton performs well Thursday    Fri Sep 4, 02:17 AM

The Associated Press reports New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton had 122 yards from scrimmage during the team's preseason game Thursday, Sept. 3. Hamilton ran the ball nine times for 34 yards and caught six passes for 88 yards.

Footballguys view: Hamilton may well have forced the Saints to keep four RBs with his performance.

Saints | Hamilton produces Saturday    Sat Aug 29, 08:02 PM

New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton rushed for 95 yards on 16 carries in the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29.

Footballguys view: The former San Diego State Aztec is currently listed behind Mike Bell, but has proven his value so far in training camp. He is an instinctive runner, with good footwork and vision to find cutback lanes. Mike Bell has solidified himself as the third RB behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush, so Hamilton may have to show special teams value in order to stay on the team.

Saints | Hamilton fumbles twice Friday    Sat Aug 15, 02:34 AM

Les East, of The Advocate, reports New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton likely hurt his cause for being the team's No. 3 halfback Friday, Aug. 14, when he fumbled twice in the team's preseason game.

Footballguys view: You've got to hang on to the football, especially when you're fighting for a roster spot. We like Hamilton's skill set, and he did look good on the carries when he didn't put the ball on the ground. However, the team will look elsewhere if they can't trust Hamilton to hold onto the ball.

Saints | Hamilton sees time with starters Tuesday    Tue Aug 4, 08:25 PM

Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports New Orleans Saints RB Lynell Hamilton saw some reps with the first-team offense during practice Tuesday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: Deuce McAllister is no longer with the team, and the Saints are looking for a strong backup running back behind Pierre Thomas and Reggie Bush. Hamilton had a great start to his college days at San Diego State, but never repeated the success from early in his career. He is instinctive, has good field vision and decisiveness as a runner. He is in a competition with Mike Bell, P.J. Hill, and Herb Donaldson for the third string job in New Orleans.

Saints | Not in market for running back?    Tue May 26, 08:39 AM

Les East, of The Advocate, reports New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said the team has good depth at the running back position, which should create good competition. RB Pierre Thomas is a candidate to serve as a complement to RB Reggie Bush, but Payton has liked what he has seen from FB Mike Bell and RB Lynell Hamilton. 'I think that we have good competition,' Payton said. 'I think those guys understand their roles and understand what they're competing for. They're all competing for touches - be it hand-offs or passing plays or reps in a game - and we have three fullbacks that are doing the same thing, all with a little bit of a different background and experience.'

Footballguys view: The Saints have some unknown players behind Reggie Bush and Pierre Thomas on the depth chart, but that doesn't mean that they lack talent. Lynell Hamilton started his career at San Diego State off with a bang and has the vision and instinct necessary to be a quality runner in the NFL. Herb Donaldson is a big, productive back from Western Illinois. He is very powerful and stays strong as the game goes on. This will be an interesting competition to keep track of throughout training camp.
