Packers | Will try a lot of screen passes to backs Sun Nov 1, 12:12 PM
Steve Wyche, of the NFL Network, reports the Green Bay Packers want to work a lot of screen passes to RBs Ryan Grant and Ahman Green to keep the Minnesota Vikings defense off balance.

Packers | Grant expected to remain starting running back Tue Oct 20, 01:30 PM
Rob Demovsky, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports the Green Bay Packers appear committed to sticking with RB Ryan Grant as their starting running back, even though he is averaging just 3.8 yards per carry this season.

Packers | Grant held to 46 rushing yards Week 2 Sun Sep 20, 07:22 PM
The Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant had 14 carries for 46 rushing yards Week 2, but he managed to score a touchdown on a four-yard run. Grant also caught three passes for 22 receiving yards.
| Our view: Grant struggled to find any running room against a Bengal defense that continues to be strong against the run. On the bright side, he continues to have little to no competition for carries. |

Packer OL Chad Clifton carted off with injury Sun Sep 20, 03:11 PM
Packers offensive tackle Chad Clifton was carted off the field with a lower leg injury and unlikely to return.
| Our view: Clifton's loss will cause a ripple effect along the line. The Packers rushing attack and pass protection could suffer. |

Packers | R. Grant scores Week 1 Mon Sep 14, 12:42 AM
The Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant had 16 carries for 61 yards with a rushing touchdown during the team's Week 1 game.
| Our view: Ryan Grant is determined not to get off to a slow start this year, and his week 1 performance certainly showed that. The Packers ground game is all about Grant, and even when Brandon Jackson returns from injury he shouldn't steal many carries from the Packers workhorse. |

Packers | Grant worked hard during the offseason Mon Sep 7, 08:33 PM
Lori Nickel, of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant would spend most days during the offseason running up and down the steps of Lambeau Field for 45 minutes. Grant said he needed to work on his explosion this year. 'Because the explosion between the first 7 yards to 10 yards in our offense is what makes the big plays,' Grant noted. Grant said the team's offensive line has also improved from the mental errors they made a year ago, which should help him. Grant also worked with sleds and drill work, as he tried to improve his ability to stop, make a cut and switch direction.
| Our view: Ryan Grant refuses to get off to a slow start this season. He's worked to regain his burst, as last year his YPC dipped to 3.9 from 5.1 in 2007. Grant also wants to have longer runs, and believes getting to the second level quicker will help him do just that. |

Packers | Grant should have heavy workload Sat Aug 22, 09:59 AM
Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant plans on receiving 20 to 25 carries per game this season.
| Our view: 20 carries a game would put Grant at 320, eight more than he had last year. We don't expect a heavier workload than that this year, especially with the good feelings the Packers seem to have about DeShawn Wynn this year. |

Packers | Grant feels healthy, more explosive Sat Aug 22, 09:52 AM
Jason Wilde, of the Wisconsin State Journal, reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant said he is back to feeling himself after dealing with a hamstring injury last season. 'I do feel more explosive. But more than that, just healthy. I feel healthy,' Grant said. 'I can burst, I don't have to think about anything. When you're healthy, it's different. I thought about (the hamstring) a lot last year. A lot of times, I couldn't hit it. Mentally, I'd see it, but I couldn't hit it. I didn't have that burst. You don't know, you're just trying to gauge it. And the way I run, there's no time for gauging.'
| Our view: Everything surrounding Grant has been positive this offseason, so you should feel fine about taking him in the fourth round of PPR leagues, and maybe even in the third round of non-PPR leagues. Even if he isn't doing much on his own, the threat that Aaron Rodgers and the Packers passing game presents should keep run lanes open all year. |

Packers | Grant says hamstring not bothering him Fri Aug 21, 01:09 PM
Pete Dougherty, of the Green Bay Press-Gazette, reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant said the hamstring injury that bothered him throughout last season has not been a factor during the offseason and training camp.
| Our view: Grant may not get off to a slow start this year because he has remained injury free this year. The Packers have a deep backfield, so the Packers may keep Grant on a short leash if he doesn't perform well. |

Packers | Rodgers leads team on two scoring drives Sun Aug 16, 01:54 AM
The Associated Press reports Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers hit 5-of-10 passes for 102 yards, including a 53-yard touchdown pass to WR Donald Driver, during the team's first preseason game Saturday, Aug. 15, against the Cleveland Browns. His next drive was an 11-play drive that was finished by a 2-yard touchdown run from RB Ryan Grant.
| Our view: Rodgers looked every bit the part of a QB poised to join the NFL's elite for good this year. |

Packers | Grant finds end zone in first preseason game Sun Aug 16, 01:50 AM
Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant carried the football six times for 28 yards, including a touchdown run Saturday, Aug. 15, against the Cleveland Browns.
| Our view: Grant reminded observers of the excellent back he was in 2007, not the mediocre back he was in 2008. He could be a solid value in the third/fourth round, and he is certainly another reason to think you can wait on your RB2 this year, instead of subscribing to the old stud RB theory. |

Packers | Wynn ahead of Jackson on the depth chart? Thu Aug 13, 08:29 PM
Greg Bedard, from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, writes on his twitter page that DeShawn Wynn is ahead of Brandon Jackson.
| Our view: Wynn's fantastic camp continues, and this is big news for fantasy owners - especially Ryan Grant owners. If Grant gets off to a slow start this season the team may be willing to turn over most of the carries to DeShawn Wynn. Brandon Jackson still provides good value to the team as a pass receiving option out of the backfield, but doesn't run with the same type of power and instinct that Wynn does. |

Packers | Wynn impressive so far in training camp Sat Aug 8, 02:20 PM
Tom Silverstein, of The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers backup RB DeShawn Wynn has stepped up his game. Running backs coach Edgar Bennett said Wynn is in the best shape he's seen him in and Wynn has matured. Bennett said Wynn needs to keep showing it day after day, but he is headed in the right direction. Wynn is a good blocker, which could allow him a chance to unseat Brandon Jackson as the third-down back. He also is able to pop off long runs and has good size. According to Silverstein, he may be able to challenge starting RB Ryan Grant for more playing time if he is able to keep it up, produce when the pads are on and stay healthy.
| Our view: Wynn has been one of the biggest buzz players of training camp thus far. We're anxiously awaiting the Packers preseason games to see if the new Wynn shows up. |

Packers | Grant having a good camp Fri Aug 7, 08:08 PM
Packers.com posted Mike McCarthy's press conference transcript from today and he commented on RB Ryan Grant. "I think Ryan has had a very solid camp. It's really our first time going through a full camp with Ryan. We acquired him the first year after training camp, and then last year obviously he had the hamstring injury. We get better every day. I talk about the philosophy to the offense, you need to be strong up the middle, and the only way to get strong up the middle is to make sure those guys practice every day. I'm talking about the center, two guards, the quarterback and the halfback. When those guys are together every single day, you've got months and years of tying that together, that's when the real offenses get clicking. Obviously you want everybody there every day, but we've had some moving parts at those positions, and I think the more we're able to lock them down and get the constant reps with those players, I think the efficiency of our offense will stay at a high level."
| Our view: Ryan Grant is trying to bounce back from a poor 2008 season and will be given every opportunity to be the Packers featured runner. In a year where you can wait on running backs in your fantasy draft (if you're not at the top of the first round) a guy like Ryan Grant could be had in some leagues as late as the third round. He should get around 300 carries this year, in addition to catching 20 or so passes this year. |

Packers | Wynn keeps impressing Fri Aug 7, 07:03 PM
Tom Silverstein, from the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, reports it's Ryan Grant's property right now, but if DeShawn Wynn can remain upright this season, the starting running back position for the Green Bay Packers might be a time share. Questions continued to linger about whether he could get himself in shape enough to challenge Grant this summer. The answer after eight training camp practices is yes. "This is the best shape I believe he's ever been in," running backs coach Edgar Bennett said. "He's strong; he's lean and quick for a big guy. He's a talented man."
| Our view: Wynn used to have a reputation as an underachiever his first two seasons with the Packers, and he was released in last year's training camp and was signed to the practice squad. He finished the year on the active roster and in week 17 against the Lions he had 7 carries for 106 yards and a touchdown. His career path may follow that of fellow Gator, Earnest Graham, who had stick around on special teams, and play a little fullback before getting his chance to carry the ball. If Ryan Grant starts slow (as he's known to do) we could see the Packers turn the running game over to DeShawn Wynn. |

Packers | Grant to carry most of running load Wed Jul 15, 11:56 AM
Kevin Seifert, of ESPN.com, reports Green Bay Packers general manager Ted Thompson said although the team likes the idea of having a 1-2 punch at the running back position with RBs Ryan Grant and Brandon Jackson, the team envisions Grant being the main guy. 'I think you need multiple guys, and we think we have some guys that can step in and play. We've put a lot of burden on Ryan the last couple of years, and I think in an ideal situation we would have some guys step in and take some of those reps, but we feel like Ryan will be our guy.'
| Our view: Grant got off to a slow start last season, with only 359 rushing yards (3.3 ypc) in the first six games of 2008. He ended the season with over 1,000 yards rushing but a meager 3.9 ypc, and only 22 targets in the passing game. Brandon Jackson could be a nice change of pace runner for the team and can also be consistently targeted in the passing game. He increased his YPC from 3.9 in 2007, to 5.5 in 2008 and many feel that he is deserving of more playing time this year. If Grant falters, starts slow, or is injured the team could turn to Kregg Lumpkin who has impressed every time he's been on the field. |

Packers | Want to run the ball more in 2009 Sat Jul 11, 09:01 PM
Mike Vandermause, from the Green Bay Press Gazette, reports the plan for the 2009 season is for the Packers to run the ball more frequently. At least that's what offensive coordinator Joe Philbin is hoping. Philbin was talking recently about his expectation that Ryan Grant would get the bulk of the carries this season. But then he added that if the Packers can run more often, then other backs on the team, such as Brandon Jackson, could see their share of carries go up as well. "Boy I'd love to see us run 32-34 times a game where we need to split up the carries a little better," said Philbin. "We haven't been that type of a team consistently. We've had spurts where we ran it that much but we need to get it up in the 30s on a consistent basis. When that happens the way the game unfolds dictates that you balance it out a little better. When you're running it 24 times, it's a little different."
| Our view: The last three Super Bowl champions haven't ran for more than 45% of their offensive plays, so running the ball more hasn't been a winning strategy recently. The Packers ran the ball 43% of the time last year, and have perhaps the best WR corps in the league. If they do run the ball more it could mean more opportunities for Ryan Grant and change of pace back Brandon Jackson. If Grant doesn't run hard the team could replace him with Kregg Lumpkin who has been impressive on the field when he's not injured. |

Packers | Grant wants to break long runs this season Wed Jun 24, 01:00 AM
Lori Nickel, of The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, reports Green Bay Packers RB Ryan Grant said the hamstring injury he had at the start of the 2008 season hampered what he was able to do. This year he wants to break long-distance runs. He had a 57-yard run in the season opener, but failed to rush for longer than 22 yards on a play the rest of the way. 'The explosion on the big run is a big thing for me and I'm getting that back. I'm able to do that now because my legs are strong. I can do whatever I want, training-wise,' Grant said.
| Our view: It's reassuring to hear Grant have an explanation for his poor performance in 2008, but it remains to be seen whether it was just an excuse or the truth. Grant is not very elusive, so he needs all the first-step explosion he can muster to break long runs. |

Packers | Grant seeks to regain explosiveness Thu Jun 11, 07:07 PM
Tom Pelissero, of the Green Bay Press Gazette, reports that the Packers have been focused on creating more explosive plays from RB Ryan Grant. An offseason study by the team revealed that linebackers often shed blocks or disrupted plays before Grant could get to the second level.
| Our view: Grant also bears some of the blame. He was poor at breaking tackles and missed a lot of practice holding out to get a new contract, leaving him less prepared physically and mentally. Grant will start out the season as the lead back, but the Packers have some talent at the position behind him, and if he continues to have trouble breaking longer runs, Brandon Jackson, DeShawn Wynn, and Kregg Lumpkin could get more opportunities. |

Packers | staff expecting big things from Grant Sat May 23, 08:33 PM
Offensive coordinator Joe Philbin had this to say, "You have a specific purpose for practice, with specific objectives, so you believe guys are going to improve and get better if have the right attitude and put forth the proper effort on the field. All that said, if he's out there and working with the type of work ethic he does have, I would think he's going to be a better player. He should be, and I think it's going to pay big dividends for him, number one, and residually for us, number two."
| Our view: Last year, Grant sat out the voluntary OTAs during contract negotiations and missed all of the on-field spring work - plus the first week of training camp. He started off slowly in 2008 because he injured his hamstring and played at less than 100 percent. We'll see if a full offseason of work will help Grant perform better throughout the 2009 season. |
