Saints | Defense took a turn for the worse in second half Fri Jan 15, 02:41 AM
Larry Holder, of CBSSports.com, reports the New Orleans Saints were plus-12 in turnover margin during their first 11 games, but are minus-1 in their past five outings.
Footballguys view: The Saints had significant injuries on defense, and that was a big reason for the decline in production. Now, the Saints defense is as healthy as it's been since about the midway point of the season. We'll see if they can start making big plays, while getting after the quarterback and causing turnovers. |

Saints | Smith, Grant to play week 1 unless league says otherwise Mon Sep 7, 07:47 PM
The Associated Press reports that Saints head coach Sean Payton is preparing for the season opener with Detroit expecting DEs Will Smith and Charles Grant to start unless the team hears from the league about the enforcement of their four-game suspensions for taking the over-the-counter weight loss supplement, StarCaps. "We're waiting to hear from the league," Payton said. "Right now we're proceeding with the idea that those two players are playing. Generally, [the NFL is] mindful of the preparation time it takes to bring in players to replace them," Payton said. "I don't anticipate that being an issue."
Footballguys view: The Saints are already heavy favorites to win the season opener, but Matthew Stafford's first NFL regular season start could be a lot more brutal if the Saints have their talented DE combo available. |

Saints | Likely will look into staggering suspensions Sun May 24, 01:25 PM
Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports the New Orleans Saints likely will ask the NFL to stagger the suspensions of DE Charles Grant and DE Will Smith if their suspensions are upheld.
Footballguys view: You have to give them an "A" for originality here because a staggered suspension would be an unprecedented move by the NFL. Players who violate the policy on steroids and related substances are suspended without pay. Smith will lose $267,500 -- one-fourth of his scheduled base salary of $1.07 million. Grant will lose $462,500. |

Saints | Grant, Smith, McAllister will serve four game suspensions Sat May 23, 12:22 PM
Mike Triplett, of the New Orleans Times-Picayune, reports that Saints DEs Charles Grant and Will Smith, and former Saints RB Deuce McAllister will have to serve their four game suspensions at the beginning of the season after a federal judge threw out their lawsuit on Friday.
Footballguys view: Bobby McCray and Jeff Charleston will have to hold down the fort in September, and newly signed Anthony Hargrove and preseason stud Rob Ninkovich could also contribute. This just increases the chances that early matchups against Philadelphia and Buffalo could turn into shootouts. |
