Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to receive trade interest from other teams leading up to the trade deadline, but the Chargers would ask for a lot in return.

Footballguys view: The Chargers don't usually play ball and will probably just keep Gordon and settle for a compensatory third round pick next year, but the Lions would be a possible destination if they do lower their demands in a trade.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to play in Week 5    Thu Oct 3, 01:01 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon will play and could start Sunday, Oct. 6, when the Chargers host the Denver Broncos, head coach Anthony Lynn said Thursday, Oct. 3. 'He's getting more work (in practice) this week, and he's definitely going to have a workload this week, but not too big,' Lynn said during a SiriusXM NFL Radio interview Thursday. 'I want to work him in, but I don't want to overdo it.'

Footballguys view: The Chargers are likely to ease Gordon into action this week against the Broncos. That means Austin Ekeler will still get plenty of work. We see Ekeler as a RB1 and Gordon more of a flex play in his debut.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to only be used in emergency    Sun Sep 29, 10:30 AM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon will be active for Week 4's game against the Miami Dolphins but is only expected to be used in an emergency, according to a source.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon joins active roster    Sat Sep 28, 04:45 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon was added to the 53-man roster Sunday, Sept. 28.

Footballguys view: Gordon is likely to play in Week 4 against the Dolphins. He's going to be limited as he's eased into action after holding out. Gordon has 'what the heck' flex value in a game against the Dolphins the Chargers should be able to win easily.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon may play Week 4    Fri Sep 27, 04:59 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon may be active for the team's Week 4 game since RB Justin Jackson (calf) has been ruled out. Head coach Anthony Lynn said the team will be careful with Gordon's snaps if he plays.

Footballguys view: Jackson is possibly out for multiple weeks. Gordon should be eased back in and not trusted in fantasy lineups this week, but he will also make Troymaine Pope a less attractive sleeper if he is active.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon will reclaim starting role    Thu Sep 26, 06:09 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon will regain his starting job once he's ready to return to the lineup, according to head coach Anthony Lynn Thursday, Sept. 26.

Footballguys view: Austin Ekeler was still a solid flex with RB2 upside in PPR leagues last year, and Gordon isn't the most durable back, especially at the end of the season. Perhaps the early time off will help his longevity this year, but it's also possible that Gordon is less prepared for the rigors of the season after taking time off.

Footballguys view: Gordon will be back for the team's Week 5 game against the Broncos. He may be eased in upon his return. Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson should both get plenty of work against the Dolphins in Week 4. When Gordon is in there, Ekeler becomes more of a flex play, Jackson goes to the bench and Gordon has RB1 potential when he's up to full speed.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon to return at some point    Fri Sep 13, 05:19 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon does not believe the team will trade him and will continue to hold out to 'protect himself,' but he will report to the team in 2019, according to a source via ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. 'This is not a Le'Veon Bell situation. He still wants to be a Charger. But he's got to protect himself,' the source told Fowler.

Footballguys view: He should be back sometime in November at the latest, but it's not a sure thing that he will come back to the role he had last year. If you drafted him you probably need to hold him for now.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon unlikely to report anytime soon    Mon Sep 2, 02:19 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has no intention to report for Week 1 as he and his representation sort through potential trade options during his holdout, according to a source. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports it is his understanding only a 'new development' would bring Gordon back into camp.

Footballguys view: Deals get done at deadlines in the NFL. The deadline of the regular season beginning is coming up and there's no real end to this holdout in sight. We'll see if the approaching regular season spurs the two sides into action. Without Gordon, the Chargers would use Austin Ekeler as the starter with Justin Jackson backing him up.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has been told that the Chargers will not have any more contract extension talks with him until after the 2019 season, according to general manager Tom Telesco.

We'll see if the Chargers can find a trade partner, actually work something out with Gordon, or just sign LeSean McCoy in free agency and call it good.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon due back?    Wed Aug 28, 10:23 AM

Updating previous reports, Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to end his holdout in time for Week 1, in the opinion of beat writer Eric D. Williams.

Footballguys view: Gordon doesn't have much leverage in this situation, and the Chargers have not backed down on their stance. We'll see if Gordon accepts their deal, rumored to be around $10 million per year, or if he plays out this season on his fifth-year option and then hits the open market in 2020. Gordon's return would negatively impact the fantasy value of Austin Ekeler. Stay tuned.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon not expected back for Week 1    Wed Aug 21, 03:21 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon is expected to continue his holdout through the start of the regular season since there has not been any progress made in contract talks, according to sources.

Footballguys view: It's time to plan on a long absence for Gordon if you haven't already - maybe as much as eight games or more. Austin Ekeler is going to be a solid RB2 for as long as Gordon is out and Justin Jackson a flex with RB2 upside. Gordon is looking riskier in the third round now and may fall further on draft boards.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon working out    Mon Aug 19, 08:36 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he has been working out in California and wants to remain in football shape while waiting for a resolution to his contract situation.

Footballguys view: The two sides have not made any progress and there's really no end in sight to this holdout. Gordon is prepared to miss regular season games if he has to. That means we could see Austin Ekeler get to start for the Chargers while Gordon is gone. We'll see if this situation clears up as the regular season is fast approaching.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has not make any progress in contract extension talks with the Chargers, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Nothing new here as training camp and the preseason rolls on. The Chargers seem content to wait this thing out, and they could go with guys like Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson if Gordon misses time. Gordon wants to return to the team before the start of the regular season but is prepared to sit out games if he does not receive a new deal.

Footballguys view: Reports indicate the Chargers are willing to pay $10 million annually but will not budge on giving Gordon more at this time. The Chargers are also not budging on allowing Gordon to seek a trade. We'll see if somethings shakes loose as things continue in Gordon's holdout.

Chargers | LAC, Melvin Gordon not close on salary talks    Sun Jul 28, 11:54 AM

RB Melvin Gordon and the Los Angeles Chargers are reportedly $2 million to $3 million apart in discussions on average salary.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon holdout could be long    Fri Jul 26, 08:44 AM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon's holdout threatens to extend into the regular season, according to sources.

Footballguys view: This is basically the read we have all had from the outside looking in. Gordon should be out of the first round and it is understandable to pass on him in the second round, even in the early third. Austin Ekeler is currently going in the seventh round and Justin Jackson is in the high double-digit rounds, but that could change with every passing day that Gordon is absent.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon doesn't report to camp    Wed Jul 24, 08:32 AM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon informed the team Wednesday, July 24, he won't report to training camp due to his desire for a new contract.

Footballguys view: It's official, Gordon is holding out. Word came down a couple of weeks ago that Gordon wanted a new deal or to be traded. Gordon is playing on his fifth-year option in 2019 with a cap hit around $5.6 million. He wants the long-term security a new contract comes with but the team doesn't look like they want to budge. In the meantime, we'll see more of Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson for the Chargers while Gordon is away.

Chargers | LA Chargers not budging on Melvin Gordon?    Mon Jul 22, 03:55 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon isn't expected to receive an extension anytime soon, as the team has reportedly 'dug in' on its stance. Barring a change in his camp's expectations, Gordon's threat to potentially hold out will be put to the test, according to Yahoo! Sports' Charles Robinson via multiple sources.

Footballguys view: Gordon will have to decide if he is willing to give the Chargers any more than the bare minimum to get his unrestricted free agent status next year - which could still be preempted by a franchise tag. He feels too risky for the first round right now. Justin Jackson and Austin Ekeler would form a committee to replace Gordon if he holds out into the season.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon hopes to stay with LAC    Sat Jul 13, 02:43 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he hopes to stay with the Chargers but believes it is time for him to receive a lucrative new contract. Gordon indicated he is willing to have a lengthy holdout.

Footballguys view: The Chargers would be unlikely to get much in return for Gordon if he was put on the trade block. He's a fine starter but injuries have kept him from playing a full season all but one year out of his four-year career. Gordon won't get top dollar, he's not that kind of back, but he should be looking for some long-term security with the Chargers. We'll see if he misses some time in training camp and the preseason holding out. The Chargers really don't have anyone on the roster who could replace him.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon wants deal or trade    Thu Jul 11, 10:12 AM

Updating an earlier report, Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon informed the team he wants a new contract or to be traded.

Footballguys view: Gordon is playing on his fifth-year option in 2019 with a fully guaranteed, one-year salary of $5.6 million. Looking around the league, we can't imagine any team too interested in trading for him. Gordon is a good starter, but he's only played a full 16-game regular season once (2017) in his career. Trading for and then paying close to top dollar for a running back doesn't sound like a plan for success. We think the Chargers end up getting something done, but Gordon might miss time in training camp and perhaps even into the preseason.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he plans to participate in the minicamp next week. Gordon also said his agent has started contract extension talks with the Chargers, but no deal is imminent.

Footballguys view: Gordon is in the final year of his rookie contract, and he's on the books for around $5.6 million. Earlier this offseason, the word was Gordon was waiting for Le'Veon Bell to get his new contract. That happened with the Jets, with Bell signing a four-year, $52.5 million deal with $35 million guaranteed. We'll see if Gordon's new deal approaches those numbers. We don't see the Chargers playing hardball too much with Gordon and expect a deal to get done in good time.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon not at workout    Mon Apr 29, 10:20 PM

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon did not participate in the voluntary workout Monday, April 29.

Footballguys view: Gordon is looking for a new deal and that may be why he's staying away during voluntary workouts. The 2015 first-round pick is due $5.6 million in 2019, the final year of his rookie deal. The Chargers were looking into an extension, so we may see something done before the start of the regular season. Stay tuned.

Los Angeles Chargers RB Melvin Gordon said he wants to wait until free-agent RB Le'Veon Bell (Steelers) signs a new contract this offseason before he considers signing a contract extension with the Chargers.

Footballguys view: Gordon's case might not be helped by Bell's contract considering Bell's handling of his last contract impasse and his history of suspensions. Chances are Gordon will get a deal more like David Johnson's than Todd Gurley's.
