He'll be the team's centerfielder in 2015, and they'll ask him to roam the secondary looking to make plays on the ball. The shoulder scope is a minor surgery, and Gilchrist should be near 100 percent healthy when training camp rolls around.

Free-agent FS Marcus Gilchrist (Chargers) is finalizing a four-year deal with the New York Jets, and he is expected to sign Friday, March 13, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Jets have done an "extreme" makeover to their secondary this offseason. Gilchrist joins Darrelle Revis, Antonio Cromartie and Buster Skrine as players added to the position. Gilchrist played over 900 defensive snaps in 2014 at multiple positions. He finished the season with 76 tackles, 1 interception, 1 sack and 2 forced fumbles. Gilchrist played 401 of those snaps in the slot, 306 at strong safety and 201 at free safety, and his position versatility will come in handy for the Jets.
