Wootton will attempt to play in the team's preseason finale Thursday, Sept. 2. He is likely to make the final roster cut. Wootton is fighting for a roster spot along with DLs Jarron Gilbert and Henry Melton.

Dan Pompei, from the Chicago Tribune, reports Bears rookie DE Jarron Gilbert is versatile enough to play all four positions on the line, and contribute on nickel defenses as well. So he should have opportunities. Defensive line coach Rod Marinelli is anxious to see how Gilbert holds up with the pads on. But he likes what he has seen so far. He praised Gilbert for his range and reach. "And he has the ability to make himself small because he can bend so well," Marinelli said. "He looks like he has a chance to be a good rusher."
| Footballguys view: Gilbert has rare athleticism for a player his size, as evidenced by the viral YouTube video that showed him jumping out of a pool flat footed. He is known to be a good hand fighter and effectively uses his upper body strength to disengage from offensive linemen quickly. Gilbert may start his career as a situational pass rusher for the Bears, but could develop into an every down player in the near future. |

Larry Mayer, of ChicagoBears.com, talked to new defensive line coach Rod Marinelli recently about his players. Marinelli on DT Tommie Harris: "He's one of the key spokes in the whole defense". Highlights include Marinelli on DE Adewale Ogunleye: "a veteran who's in tremendous shape." Marinelli on DT Marcus Harrison: "His potential is out of this world. He is a big, athletic man who moves well. He wants to be really good and he works hard." Marinelli also commented on DT Dusty Dvoracek, DL Israel Idonije, and DT Jarron Gilbert.
| Footballguys view: The Bears defensive line was pretty quiet last year from a fantasy perspective, but that could all change with the addition of Marinelli, who was a terrific defensive coach during his time at Tampa Bay. We would be more inclined to take a chance on Harris in DT required leagues than we were before the Bears hired Marinelli. |
