NFL | Antonio Gates wraps up illustrious career Tue Jan 14, 02:08 PM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) announced his retirement from football via social media Tuesday, Jan. 14.
Footballguys view: Gates wraps up his 16-year career with the Chargers and will go down as a future Hall of Fame player and one of the best tight ends in NFL history. No other tight end in the NFL has had more touchdowns (116) than Gates, and he ranks No.7 all time in that category. Gates didn't play in 2019 and finishes his career with 955 catches for 11,841 yards. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates could return Tue Mar 26, 02:45 PM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) could still be re-signed by the Los Angeles Chargers, according to head coach Anthony Lynn.
Footballguys view: Of course he could. The Chargers are looking for Hunter Henry to play, stay healthy and showcase the supreme natural talent he has. There's not much behind Henry in terms of pass-catching tight ends (apologies to Virgil Green), so perhaps Gates would be in line for one more run. |

Chargers | GM open to Antonio Gates continuing in 2019 Fri Jan 18, 07:06 PM
Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates may only come back as the team's third tight end behind starter Hunter Henry and blocker Virgil Green, but general manager Tom Telesco indicated in the recent interview that he believes he will welcome back Gates for another season.
Footballguys view: Gates wants to return and the Chargers are open to his return. It sounds like something they could make work later in the year. Gates doesn't need a bunch of offseason work so perhaps he's out of football until the summer. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates open to 2019 return Sun Jan 13, 09:33 PM
Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates said he wants to return in 2019 if the Chargers will have him back.
Footballguys view: Gates is certainly not the player he used to be and is in the twilight of his pro career. In 2018, Gates had the second-lowest catch total in a single season (28) but he did finish with 333 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He still has great chemistry with QB Philip Rivers and could stick around in a similar role for next season. Gates is set to be an unrestriced free agent in 2019. |

Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates registered five receptions for 41 yards with a touchdown on eight targets in the AFC Divisional Round playoff game loss Sunday, Jan. 13.

Chargers | Two expected to be game-time decisions Fri Nov 16, 06:04 PM
Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates (knee) and DE Joey Bosa (foot) are expected to be game-time decisions for the Week 11 game.
Footballguys view: Gates may not do much if he does play against the Broncos. Bosa might return as a part-time pass rusher on Sunday, and he'd be going up against a Broncos offensive line with three new starters on the interior of the O-line due to injury. They could also just give Bosa another week of rest as he's close. |

Chargers | Week 11 injury report for LAC Fri Nov 16, 04:22 PM
Los Angeles Chargers CB Trevor Williams (knee) did not practice Friday, Nov. 16 and he has been ruled out for the Week 11 game against the Denver Broncos. TE Antonio Gates (knee) and DE Joey Bosa (foot) were each limited participants and are listed as questionable. WR Keenan Allen (hip, finger) practiced on a limited basis, while WR Geremy Davis (hamstring), LB Kyle Emanuel (hip), LB Chris Landrum (hip), DT Darius Philon (ankle) and WR Mike Williams (groin) were able to practice in full and have been removed from the injury report.

Chargers | Antonio Gates optimistic of playing Sunday Thu Sep 6, 11:10 AM
Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates has not ruled out playing in the team's season opener Sunday, Sept. 9. 'I've always been optimistic about playing in a game, whether I was injured or not here -- it didn't matter,' Gates said after practicing for the first time this season Wednesday, Sept. 5. 'So, I think I'm well aware of the preparation that needs to be put in throughout the week to go play a game at the highest level possible. With that being said ... it just depends on how I feel leading up to Sunday.'
Footballguys view: We wouldn't advise you to risk Gates in your lineup this week. We don't know what shape he's in, how he's practiced or even how mentally prepared he is. Could he have a big game? Sure, but it's more likely that it will take a week or two for him to start producing. Keep in mind, he's not the old Antonio Gates either, and is now a guy who has seen less and less targets and reps over the last three years. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates to practice Wednesday Tue Sep 4, 12:24 PM
Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates will practice Wednesday, Sept. 5, according to head coach Anthony Lynn, giving the team the opportunity to gauge Gates' conditioning and game readiness. 'I don't want to put him in a position where he goes out and hurts himself, and then it sets us back four or five weeks,' Lynn said.
Footballguys view: Gates is no longer the same player he used to be. That being said, his chemistry with Philip Rivers is off the charts and he shouldn't need much time to get up to speed in 2018. He's a low-end TE2 at best for Fantasy GMs this year. |

Los Angeles Chargers RB Justin Jackson was waived Monday, Sept. 3, to make room for TE Antonio Gates on the 53-man roster. The Chargers also signed TE Thomas Duarte (Dolphins) to the practice squad.
Footballguys view: A hamstring injury in training camp held back Jackson this summer. The rookie from Northwestern is an intriguing back due to his versatility and explosion. Perhaps we'll see him signed to the practice squad. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates returns to LA Chargers Sun Sep 2, 12:03 PM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) agreed to terms with the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Sept. 2.

Chargers | LAC close to re-signing Antonio Gates? Wed Jul 25, 02:33 AM
The Los Angeles Chargers are actively negotiating with free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers), according to Gates' agent Tom Condon.
Footballguys view: Another day and another Gates-to-the-Chargers report. He's not what he used to be but if Gates does sign with a team in 2018 it will be with the Chargers. They need to do something with blocking TE Virgil Green sitting atop their depth chart at the position. |

Chargers | Hope for Antonio Gates back in Los Angeles? Mon Jul 23, 10:33 PM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) is reportedly very much in the picture to rejoin the Los Angeles Chargers, according to a source, who added it would 'their preference' for a deal to get worked out before the start of training camp, per ESPN's Josina Anderson.
Footballguys view: It seems like Gates is going to be back with the Chargers in the near future. His name was the first most brought up when Hunter Henry went down with a knee injury in the spring. Gates is no longer the player he used to be but the Chargers don't have much talent at the position without Henry. Right now, free agent addition Virgil Green is their top tight end. |

Chargers | LAC open to re-signing Antonio Gates Sat Jul 21, 10:55 AM
The Los Angeles Chargers have continued to express interest in re-signing free-agent TE Antonio Gates, according to general manager Tom Telesco.
Footballguys view: This has always seemed like a possibility since Hunter Henry went down with a knee injury earlier this offseason. Gates has a great connection with QB Philip Rivers but he's certainly not the same player he used to be. The Chargers currently have blocking TE Virgil Green atop their depth chart at the position. |

Chargers | LA Chargers or bust for Antonio Gates? Mon Jul 2, 10:37 PM
Los Angeles Chargers special assistant LaDainian Tomlinson told SiriusXM NFL Radio on Monday, July 2, that he believes former teammate and free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) only wants to play for the Chargers.
Footballguys view: There might not be another team that is heavily interested in him, outside of maybe the Cowboys. He is a receiving tight end who can't separate at this point in his career, but that never stopped Philip Rivers from targeting him. Gates would be a waiver wire watch list candidate if the Chargers sign him. |

Chargers | QB in favor of Antonio Gates re-signing Wed May 30, 11:20 PM
Los Angeles Chargers QB Philip Rivers said he would be in favor of free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) re-signing with the Chargers this offseason.
Footballguys view: When Hunter Henry (knee) went down for the season, calling Gates immediately came to mind for everyone out there. We'll see if the Chargers reach out to him before training camp or mandatory minicamp. Rivers said he talked with Gates last week. |

Chargers | LAC considering Antonio Gates Sat May 26, 12:18 PM
Updating a previous report, free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) is a player the Los Angeles Chargers have discussed re-signing this offseason because of TE Hunter Henry's (knee) injury.
Footballguys view: The Chargers were going to move on from Gates this offseason, but the season-ending injury to Henry changes things. Gates is not the player he used to be...not even close...but they are desperate at the position. |

Chargers | LA to bring back Antonio Gates? Wed May 23, 02:43 AM
The Los Angeles Chargers are likely to consider re-signing free-agent TE Antonio Gates, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.
Footballguys view: That would make the most sense for the Chargers, even though Gates is no longer the player he used to be. Gates had previously been told he would not be brought back, but TE Hunter Henry (knee) suffered what's believed to be a season-ending knee injury Tuesday, May 22. |

NFL | Antonio Gates wants to play in 2018 Fri Apr 27, 11:27 PM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) said Friday, April 27, that he wants to continue playing, even though the Los Angeles Chargers informed him in the offseason that they do not intend to sign him.
Footballguys view: They want to get Hunter Henry go, and most fantasy owners want the same. Could Gates end up somewhere like Dallas for a year? He's just about tapped out, but is capable of the odd good game still. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates likely to re-sign Fri Apr 27, 05:06 PM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) wants to continue his playing career but has been told that the Los Angeles Chargers do not plan to re-sign him, according to a source.
Footballguys view: Doing the reverse Jason Witten, we see. Gates is fading, but still has productive moments, even if they are fewer and further between. The Chargers have a few aging pieces -- Gates and quarterback Philip Rivers in particular -- who they need to make some decisions on in the next few years. Hunter Henry is ready, the Chargers are ready -- maybe they can talk the Cowboys into a deal for Gates? |

Chargers | No talks with Antonio Gates and Chargers Tue Apr 24, 08:24 AM
Free-agent TE Antonio Gates (Chargers) hasn't had any recent contact with the Los Angeles Chargers, according to general manager Tom Telesco.
Footballguys view: It's likely the end of an era with the Chargers. Undrafted out of Kent State in 2003, Gates has been part of the revolution at the tight end position. He never played college football but was a college basketball star. Gates used that basketball skill set to dominate during his heyday on the football field. It will be sad to see him in another uniform, but it sounds like Gates is not quite ready to hang up his cleats. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates' reps to meet with Chargers Thu Mar 1, 12:43 PM
Los Angeles Chargers impending free-agent TE Antonio Gates' agents will meet with the Chargers this week at the NFL combine, according to general manager Tom Telesco. Telesco said he believes Gates, who will turn 38 years old this summer, can still play in the NFL.
Footballguys view: He looked solid last year, but also looked like he was giving way to Hunter Henry when Henry was healthy. At some point the Chargers need to pull the rip cord on Gates, as he is finally showing some age. |

Chargers | Antonio Gates' future up in the air Thu Jan 4, 09:39 PM
Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates' future with the team is currently undecided, general manager Tom Telesco said Thursday, Jan. 4.
Footballguys view: Gates is set to be a free agent in March, and it would be odd to see him in another jersey. He's a Hall of Fame tight end the Chargers found in the college basketball ranks. Having never played college football, Gates has become a force since his breakout season in 2004. Gates says he wants to be back, and the Chargers could bring him back if the price is right. Hunter Henry is their lead tight end for 2018, even if Gates does stay with the team. |

Los Angeles Chargers TE Antonio Gates will be a free agent after the season, but he said he still has 'the juice' and would like to play in 2018.
Footballguys view: The future Hall of Fame tight end turns 38 years old next summer, and he'd look awkward playing for another team. Hunter Henry is set to be the lead tight end for the Chargers going forward, but if Gates came back for a good price he could continue to work as a reserve player. |
