NFL | David Garrard wants to play    Thu Aug 28, 03:07 PM

Free-agent QB David Garrard (Jets) would like to return to an NFL roster, and thinks he has a chance to do that once rosters are cut down. "I actually haven't gotten any calls yet but my agent has reached out to the Rams and to a number of teams," Garrard said. "They've all said they have me on their 'hot list' so I think probably something will happen after these last cuts once teams realize who is available, who is not available and then maybe somebody like myself can join a team."

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Given his injury issues and the way he left the New York Jets, teams might think twice. Then again some team might get desperate and ring him up. And then we say again, good luck with that.

The New York Jets have declared OG Ben Ijalana, TE Chris Pantale, QB David Garrard, LB Garrett McIntyre, WR Jeremy Kerley, OT Oday Aboushi, OG William Campbell inactive for Week 13.

The New York Jets have declared RB Alex Green, OG Ben Ijalana, QB David Garrard, LB Garrett McIntyre, WR Jeremy Kerley, OT Oday Aboushi, OG William Campbell inactive for Week 11.

The New York Jets have declared RB Alex Green, OG Ben Ijalana, QB David Garrard, TE Jeff Cumberland, OT Oday Aboushi, WR Santonio Holmes, OG William Campbell inactive for Week 9.

Footballguys view: With Cumberland and Holmes out, David Nelson becomes a viable desperation play, and Jeremy Kerley is a bonafide WR2/WR3 today. Stephen Hill is also a solid boom/bust WR3/Flex play.

Jets | Matt Simms will be No. 2 QB    Mon Oct 21, 06:33 PM

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Matt Simms will continue be the team's No. 2 quarterback and that the team does not expect QB David Garrard to play.

Footballguys view: Garrard is just veteran insurance. Smith is locked in as the starter, and we won't see Simms unless there's an injury.

Jets | David Garrard added to roster    Mon Oct 21, 04:26 PM

The New York Jets re-signed QB David Garrard to the active roster Monday, Oct. 21, and released QB Brady Quinn in a corresponding move.

Jets | David Garrard returns    Thu Oct 10, 10:50 AM

The New York Jets placed QB David Garrard on the exempt list. They'll have two weeks to evaluate him before making a decision on whether to activate him.

Footballguys view: Nobody expects Garrard to return and it'd be foolish for the Jets to expect it given what happened last time. Nothing to see here.

Jets | David Garrard could have pushed Mark Sanchez    Sun Jul 21, 11:52 AM

The New York Jets believed retired QB David Garrard had a legitimate chance to win the starting quarterback job and put QB Mark Sanchez's roster spot in jeopardy. The team did not think Sanchez's contract was untradeable.

Footballguys view: This reflects more on Sanchez than Garrard. Geno Smith should be able to take this job over at some point in 2013 unless he has really turned the organization off with an alleged demeanor that hurt his draft stock this spring.

Jets | Knew David Garrard had injury issues    Fri May 24, 02:11 PM

New York Jets owner Woody Johnson said the team knew retired QB David Garrard may not be able to play when they signed him this offseason but were hoping he would be able to get past his injuries.

Footballguys view: Garrard said the New York Jets offered him the chance to attend their training camp as a coaching intern. Now that his playing days are over Garrard will have to decide what he wants to do with his life. Several former players make their ways to the coaching ranks once their playing days are done.

Footballguys view: Now that Garrard is done playing football he'll have to consider what he wants to do with his life. Several former players have turned to the coaching ranks once their playing days are over.

Jets | David Garrard says team will have open QB competition    Thu May 16, 02:32 PM

Retired QB David Garrard said the New York Jets coaches told him they would have an open competition for the starting quarterback job during the offseason and that no player will be promised the starting job.

Footballguys view: This is Mark Sanchez's job to lose but many expect rookie Geno Smith to win the job before the start of the regular season. Smith is a better athlete, has more confidence, and is an extremely intelligent player. He gives defenses more to worry about than Sanchez does.

Jets | Mark Sanchez should have edge on starting job    Wed May 15, 05:11 PM

New York Jets starting QB Mark Sanchez should have an edge on the starting quarterback job over QB Geno Smith after the news of QB David Garrard possibly retiring today, according to former head coach Herm Edwards. 'This is now Mark Sanchez's job to lose,' Edwards said.

Footballguys view: Sanchez may have the edge because of his experience. Smith has better confidence than Sanchez and will be fueled by the fact that he fell to the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft. Anything can happen, but we wouldn't be surprised to see Smith win the starting job.

Jets | Appears David Garrard is retiring     Wed May 15, 04:22 PM

It appears that New York Jets QB David Garrard (knee) is preparing to retire as he continues to have knee issues. 'Having to call it quits. My knee is not holding up. Continuing to swell after practices. Limiting what I can do,' Garrard said.

Footballguys view: The QB position in New York is going to come down to Mark Sanchez versus second-round pick Geno Smith. Anything can happen in training camp, but Smith should be able to make a strong case for himself as the starter.

Jets | David Garrard has a real chance to start     Tue May 7, 10:55 AM

New York Jets QB David Garrard will have a legitimate opportunity to compete for the team's starting quarterback job, and if he stays healthy, may very well be the Week 1 starter, according to a rival team executive.

Footballguys view: If Geno Smith can't beat out David Garrard then there's a problem. We feel Smith and Mark Sanchez are the most likely to win the starting job for the Jets in week one. Experience is the best teacher and Smith needs to learn on the job.

Jets | Could Mark Sanchez start in 2013?    Fri May 3, 10:04 AM

New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez could very well be the team's starting quarterback this upcoming season. Sanchez may provide the team's best option at quarterback because QB Geno Smith is considered raw at this point and QB David Garrard is 35 years old and hasn't played an NFL game since 2010. Head coach Rex Ryan is likely coaching for his job this year, so he likely will pick the starting quarterback who will best help him win games in the short term.

Footballguys view: It's a make or break year for Sanchez. He'll have to play with confidence in order to beat out Smith in training camp. If he wins the job but struggles later on the team could bench Sanchez at some point during the season.

Jets | David Garrard ready to compete    Thu May 2, 04:40 PM

New York Jets QB David Garrard is ready to compete for the starting job, and is not there just to collect a check. 'I'm healthy now and I'm going to be going after it. I'm not here collecting paychecks,' Garrard said Thursday afternoon. 'That's not what I'm about. I'm definitely healthy and I definitely want to get out there. I want to be the guy but I can't talk about it. I gotta get on the field and do it.'

Footballguys view: Garrard is likely to be the team's third QB behind Geno Smith and Mark Sanchez to enter training camp. We'll see if he can climb the depth chart, or if he'll be bumped up automatically if the team decides to cut Sanchez.

New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan said QB Mark Sanchez will get the first snap when offseason workouts begin but will have to compete with QB David Garrard for the starting job.

Jets | David Garrard to compete for starting job    Tue Mar 12, 03:46 PM

New York Jets QB David Garrard said he was told he would have a chance to compete for the starting quarterback job. 'Honestly, they told me I'd have a chance to compete for the starting job,' Garrard said Tuesday in a conference call with reporters. 'That's what was told to me. They all seemed to be very genuine with it. They didn't seem to be like, 'Oh, let's get him in here and then we can slot him in the two or three or four slot.' I didn't feel that.'

Footballguys view: The Jets want to push Mark Sanchez for the starting job. Garrard was out of football last year after competing with the Dolphins in training camp.

Jets | Sign David Garrard    Mon Mar 11, 05:36 PM

The New York Jets signed QB David Garrard (Dolphins) Monday, Mar. 11. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Sounds about right. The Jets are looking to bring in a veteran for competition with incumbent Mark Sanchez. Garrard is not the same player he used to be but could push Sanchez for the starting job. Adding Garrard could mean they are ready to cut ties with Tim Tebow.

Panthers | Could bring in David Garrard    Sat Mar 9, 08:32 PM

Dolphins | No interest in David Garrard    Wed Mar 6, 09:54 PM

Free-agent QB David Garrard (Dolphins) (knee) is healthy and interested in the backup quarterback position with the Miami Dolphins, but the team has not reached out to him. 'I would love to be back in Miami. I love the coaching staff; I love (QB Ryan Tannehill),' he said. 'Getting back in the league is what I want. I want to be able to go out in my career playing at a high level. I don't want some freakish injuries to decide my career.'

Footballguys view: Garrard was with the Dolphins last year in training camp pushing for the starting job. He was cut in September due to a knee injury. He's trying to make a comeback and has drawn interest from the Jets.

Footballguys view: A source familiar with the situation said he sees a deal between the Jets and Garrard as likely.

Jets | Impressed with David Garrard    Fri Mar 1, 04:07 PM

The New York Jets were impressed with QB David Garrard (Dolphins) after putting him through a long workout that included testing his stamina, his throwing skill and his surgically repaired knee. Garrard also went through medical tests, including an MRI, and did not leave the team facility until 7:30 p.m. 'They gave us all indications they want to do something, but they first have to move some stuff around,' said Garrard's agent, Al Irby, alluding to roster/contract tinkering. 'David is very interested, but he has some alternatives.'

Footballguys view: If Garrard is signed by the Jets he'll compete with Mark Sanchez for the starting job. They wanted to add a QB to the mix this offseason to push Sanchez but adding Garrard really isn't a 'wow' move.

Jets | Nearing deal with David Garrard    Fri Mar 1, 10:48 AM

The New York Jets are nearing a deal with free-agent QB David Garrard (Dolphins).

Dolphins | David Garrard to be released     Tue Sep 4, 03:07 PM

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard is expected to be released Tuesday, Sept. 4.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Garrard emerged early in training camp but his knee injury cost him a roster spot. He may get some interest on the open market once his knee is completely healed in a couple of weeks. The Dolphins will move forward with Matt Moore as the primary backup behind rookie starter Ryan Tannehill.

Dolphins | David Garrard, Matt Moore to compete for spot    Sun Sep 2, 01:08 PM

Miami Dolphins QBs David Garrard and Matt Moore will be competing for one roster spot this week before the team decides to trade or release one of them. One will be moved because QB Pat Devlin will definitely remain on the team.

Footballguys view: It is interesting that the team likes Devlin enough to cut one of the veterans, but their pay and lack of being a step forward for the team at quarterback is probably enough to justify letting one go.

Miami Dolphins QB David Garrard (knee) may not make the final roster because of the knee surgery he had a few weeks ago. Garrard indicated earlier this week that he is not able to jog or put any real pressure on his knee.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are going to start Ryan Tannehill and could use Matt Moore as their veteran backup. Garrard was looking good earlier in training camp, but this knee injury could spell the end of his time in Miami. If healthy there may be other teams interested in Garrard.
