49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo holding throwing sessions    Tue Apr 24, 02:13 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo started holding weekend throwing sessions with his teammates, in which wide receivers, running backs and tight ends are invited. He held the first one with the 49ers on Saturday, April 21, with WR Pierre Garcon among those who showed up. 'It kind of gets us away from the coaches and everything, allows me to talk to the receivers about specific things,' Garoppolo said. 'Talking through routes, concepts -- how they see it vs. how I see it -- it just gets us on the same page.'

Footballguys view: The future looks bright for Garoppolo and the 49ers this year. With a full season as their starter, Garoppolo could get the team into the Wild Card conversation.

49ers | More on Jimmy Garoppolo deal    Fri Feb 16, 09:09 AM

Updating previous reports, San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo's deal will pay him $35 million in a signing bonus and roster bonus before the season. He can create $7.5 million in injury guarantees if he makes the AP All-NFL team in any year or he plays 50 percent of the snaps in the regular season, the 49ers make the NFC Championship game and he plays in 50 percent of the playoff snaps. Essentially, Garoppolo is signed for two years and $61 million and potentially three years and $86 million. The final two years could be a wash.

49ers | Big contract for Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Feb 8, 01:38 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo agreed to a five-year, $137.5 million contract Thursday, Feb. 8, according to a source. It is the largest contract in NFL history on a per-year basis.

Footballguys view: On the strength of just seven games, but in San Francisco's defense, he's undefeated. He's a solid quarterback, but this is a massive contract.

49ers | SF nearing deal with Jimmy Garoppolo    Sun Feb 4, 10:17 AM

The San Francisco 49ers appear to be close to finalizing a long-term contract extension with QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to multiple sources informed of the situation.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo should become one of the highest paid quarterbacks in the game, but because of timing, not track record. Still, the marriage between him and Kyle Shanahan should be a happy and productive one. He might go higher than he should in drafts on the momentum and recognition he generated in December.

49ers | Long deal likely for Jimmy Garoppolo?    Sat Jan 13, 09:48 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will be given the franchise tag if a long-term contract is not reached by March 6, according to Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area, but Maiocco is confident the two sides will agree to a long-term deal.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo should become of the highest-paid players in the league after he closed the season with a five-game winning streak. Both sides will be happy to forge a long term deal with one of the highest guaranteed money numbers in league history.

  49ers | Week 17 game recap for 49ers    Sun Dec 31, 07:25 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo completed 20-of-33 passes for 292 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions in the Week 17 game against the Los Angeles Rams. RB Carlos Hyde rushed 15 times for 90 yards and two scores, while RB Matt Breida added 12 runs for 72 yards and a 32-yard catch. TE George Kittle led the way with 100 yards on four receptions, while WR Trent Taylor had two grabs for 29 yards. WR Marquise Goodwin (head) had two grabs, 28 yards and a touchdown before leaving with a injury. WR Aldrick Robinson also added a 12-yard score.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo should be a trendy pick next year after his strong finish. Hyde was as good as the 49ers offense allowed him to be in his contract year. Breida should have at least the same role next year, while fellow rookie Kittle should settle into a core role beside Goodwin and Pierre Garcon in a rising passing game.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo completed 26-of-37 pass attempts for 293 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in the Week 13 game against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo at least led five scoring drives, even if they were all field goals. He made the 49ers receivers more viable plays and could improve next week against the Texans.

49ers | Limited playbook for Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Nov 30, 11:21 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo doesn't know the entire offense yet, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan, but Shanahan said they will only use plays Garoppolo is '100 percent' comfortable with against the Chicago Bears in Week 13.

Footballguys view: Part of the playbook with Garoppolo is still likely to produce better results than most of the playbook with CJ Beathard.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo will start this week    Tue Nov 28, 06:39 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo will start his first game as a 49er in Week 13 against the Chicago Bears.

Footballguys view: C.J. Beathard is banged up with two injuries (knee, hip) and the team is going to go with the guy they traded for earlier this year in Garoppolo. He came into the game in Week 12 for an injured Beathard, completed 100 percent of his passes (only 2-for-2) and threw for a touchdown. This will be his first start with his new team, and Garoppolo is an option for fantasy owners in start-2 QB leagues.

49ers | San Fran to make QB decision Wednesday    Tue Nov 28, 12:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan is expected to name his starting quarterback for Week 13 no later than Wednesday, Nov. 29.

Footballguys view: This decision is going to come down to the health of C.J. Beathard. Shanahan does not know if incumbent Beathard (knee, hip) will be able to practice Wednesday and indicated whomever he chooses between Beathard and Jimmy Garoppolo would need to take all the first-team practice snaps leading up to their game with the Chicago Bears.

49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo could receive tag    Sat Nov 25, 09:17 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo could receive the franchise tag next season, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. 'It would be great if it could work out that way (a long-term contract), but that's just not the situation any of us are in,' Shanahan said. 'That is the good thing about the franchise tag and that's what, to me, made it an easier decision to trade for him.'

  49ers | C.J. Beathard remains starter    Wed Nov 22, 04:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB C.J. Beathard will start Week 12 over QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: It's a home game versus Seattle, but this is a Seahawks defense that has been set back by injuries. Beathard is a streaming option for fantasy owners, although there are no more bye weeks left and you just might have better options in 2-QB leagues. Garoppolo waits his turn, but we should see him at some point this season.

49ers | San Francisco undecided about quarterback    Mon Nov 13, 01:16 PM

San Francisco 49ers Jimmy Garoppolo will remain around the team facility during the club's Week 11 bye in order to learn as much about the offense as possible from head coach Kyle Shanahan, who suggested he does not have a plan yet when it comes to naming a starting quarterback for Week 12 against the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners want to see Garoppolo as the starter but coming off their first win of the season the 49ers may not want to make the switch. Garoppolo is still learning the offense -- and the very complex language of the Shanahan system. In start 2-QB leagues (or QB-flex leagues), fantasy owners can hang onto Garoppolo if they have the bench space.

San Francisco 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo may not make his first start with the team until the 49ers return from their Week 11 bye, according to the Sacramento Bee's Matt Barrows.

Footballguys view: The Shanahan system is not easy or simple, so Garoppolo will get a crash course in what they do with the 49ers. While Garoppolo is learning, the team should continue to use rookie C.J. Beathard as their starter.

Patriots | New England trades Jimmy Garoppolo    Mon Oct 30, 08:31 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo was traded to the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Oct. 30, in exchange for a 2018 second-round draft choice, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have now traded two backup quarterbacks (Jacoby Brissett, Jimmy Garoppolo) over the last two months. At this time, they don't have a backup quarteback behind Tom Brady but they could make a run at recently released Brian Hoyer as he used to be with the team and knows the system.

  49ers | Jimmy Garoppolo acquired by 49ers    Mon Oct 30, 08:13 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo was acquired by the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Oct. 30, in exchange for a 2018 second-round draft choice, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The 49ers need a potential franchise quarterback and they get one in Garoppolo. They're not waiting for Kirk Cousins to be a free agent next year, and Garoppolo will start for them ASAP. We may not see Garoppolo under center in Week 9 as it may take a couple of weeks for him to get up to speed in the complex Kyle Shanahan system. Garoppolo is an accurate quarterback who will bump up the fantasy value for guys like WR Pierre Garcon when he's out there.

Patriots | Champs high on Jimmy Garoppolo    Fri Jul 21, 11:20 AM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has head coach Bill Belichick enamored by his ability, according to one scout. 'Bill thinks he's got the next great one,' the scout said. 'I watched his snaps. I think he can be that. (Garoppolo) has a great base, and his mechanics are close enough to (QB Tom Brady) that you appreciate his willingness to learn and the coaching he's gotten there.'

Footballguys view: Well, the Patriots sure weren't in a rush to get rid of him, so we believe it. Garoppolo was impressive as far back as the 2014 Senior Bowl, with a strong arm and a sharp football mind. The question was whether he could learn to do all the little things and adjust his game. From what we saw last season before he was injured, the answer is yes. He's not likely to have fantasy value this year barring an injury to Brady, but he should be on your dynasty rosters without a doubt.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo limited    Tue Jun 13, 12:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo (leg) was limited to the exercise bike Tuesday, June 13, due to a minor leg injury.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo is set to be the primary backup behind Tom Brady again this year. After 2017, Garoppolo is scheduled to be a free agent on the open market. It will be interesting to see if they can keep him around if Brady sticks around past this year, which is quite likely given his health and desire to play well into his 40s.

Browns | Cleveland pursued Jimmy Garappolo again    Fri Apr 28, 01:26 PM

The Cleveland Browns again were rebuffed by the New England Patriots in their attempt to land QB Jimmy Garoppolo during the 2017 NFL Draft on Thursday, April 27, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Time to take no for an answer, Browns. Although in fairness, a lot of media was convinced the Patriots were just playing hard to get, so a call isn't the silliest idea for the Browns. The Browns are clearly only somewhat sold on Brock Osweiler, it seems, and he may yet end up off that team. Meanwhile Garoppolo clearly will remain a Patriot.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo staying put?    Sun Apr 23, 08:14 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo 'isn't going anywhere,' according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: The Browns want Garoppolo, but they aren't willing to pay the price it would take to get him away from the Pats. They'll lose Garoppolo in free agency next year as he looks for a starting job...but they Patriots will get a compensatory pick for him they can use in 2019 if (when?) they lose the young passer.

Patriots | 'Long shot' Jimmy Garoppolo gets traded    Sun Apr 23, 02:27 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo figures to be the target of several last-ditch trade attempts from the Cleveland Browns leading up to the start of the 2017 NFL Draft, but the Boston Herald's Karen Guregian considers a potential deal a 'long shot' that would require an 'overwhelming offer'.

Footballguys view: The Browns may want Garoppolo but they may not be willing to pay the price it would take to add him. The draft will be the final deadline for any deal to get done. The Patriots will lose Garoppolo next year in free agency as he'll move on to get a starting job.

Browns | Cleveland not done with Jimmy Garoppolo    Mon Mar 27, 05:06 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo remains of interest to the Cleveland Browns. Cleveland could continue to pursue a trade this weekend at the NFL owners meetings. As reported previously, Garoppolo is not expected to be traded. Neither side has acknowledged that a possible deal is or is not in the works.

Footballguys view: There's a breaking point for everyone. The Patriots don't want to give up Garoppolo, but a couple of first-round picks could change their mind. The Browns have targeted Garoppolo as a potential franchise quarterback, and they will do what they can to add him via trade if at all possible.

Patriots | Belief Patriots will keep Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Mar 16, 06:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo may end up sticking with the team for 2017 and beyond, as there is a 'persistent belief within league circles' that they truly want to keep him. The thinking is that QB Tom Brady's 'magic number' is three more years or perhaps fewer if he wins one more Super Bowl, and that head coach Bill Belichick has decided after one year of working with him that he doesn't believe QB Jacoby Brissett will become a 'true franchise quarterback.'

Footballguys view: Assuming all that is true, we aren't shocked Brissett (a third round pick) isn't the long term answer, nor that the team likes Garoppolo enough to keep him. This means they have to pay him soon, though, and it will be interesting to see what that looks like with the cap-conscious and cap-savvy Patriots.

Browns | Door closing on Jimmy Garopppolo trade talk?    Fri Mar 10, 01:16 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo will not be traded to the Cleveland Browns no matter what they offer, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Footballguys view: Schefter has been adamant that no trade was going to happen. The Browns need to find a QB of the future, and that could be Garoppolo if they could pry him away from the Patriots.

Browns | CLE to continue pursuit of Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Mar 9, 06:30 PM

The Cleveland Browns will continue their efforts to trade for New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Browns have acquired a lot of picks and it seems for more than just getting young players. Garoppolo was someone we thought could be moved this offseason if someone had enough picks. If the Browns acquire him though, can he succeed with the wide receivers the team has? On the plus side, they did add some talent to the offensive line which might give a new quarterback time to throw.

Patriots | No legitimate offers for Jimmy Garoppolo    Sun Mar 5, 08:43 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo hasn't been traded because no team has come close to meeting the asking price, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots can just hold onto Garoppolo for insurance behind Tom Brady in 2017. When they lose him as a free agent in 2018, the team will get a compensatory pick back in 2019...likely a third rounder.

The New England Patriots are reportedly exploring their options among free-agent signal-callers in the event a team meets their asking price for backup QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots are doing their due diligence...and that's not a surprise to anyone. They're not going to be caught off guard if someone gets to their asking price for Garoppolo.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo still available    Thu Mar 2, 09:26 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo could still be traded if the offer is right and 'everything is still on the table,' according to a league source.

Footballguys view: The Patriots have given clear signals they want a good pick (or two) for him. Will a team pull the trigger on a first round pick? We're not sure. On the one hand, he's shown a little more (and is a lot more ready) on an NFL field. On the other hand, he's not that much more experienced than the rookies coming in. He was in a Patriots offense for a couple of years but until this season, only saw the field sparingly. It's a risk and if the rumors of a requested first rounder (and a high one at that) are true, we think we'd pass.

The Browns could consider quarterbacks like Buffalo Bills QB Tyrod Taylor, Dallas Cowboys QB Tony Romo and Tampa Bay Buccaneers impending free-agent QB Mike Glennon if they are not able to acquire Garoppolo.

Bengals | AJ McCarron the best QB trade target?    Sat Feb 18, 10:30 PM

Cincinnati Bengals QB AJ McCarron is a better trade target than New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo, according to one NFL executive. 'If I had to choose one, I would go after McCarron,' the executive said. 'Ideally, you get him for a late second- or early third-round pick.

Footballguys view: A fifth-round pick in 2014, McCarron has been patiently waiting and developing behind starter Andy Dalton. In seven appearances (all in 2015), McCarron has six touchdowns and only two interceptions. He worked in a pro style offense during his college career at Alabama, and he's known as a cocky Alpha male who can be a fiery leader. McCarron does struggle with pressure, but when settled down he's not afraid to make tough throws.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo to fetch Day 2 draft pick?    Sun Feb 12, 01:29 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to attract a second-round selection from interested teams this offseason, according to the Boston Globe's Ben Volin.

Footballguys view: Would that be enough for the Patriots to let him go? Garoppolo was a second-round pick of the Patriots in 2014, and he hits free agency in 2018. The Patriots want to get something for him before they lose him and get nothing next offseason. It seems like the Browns may be the most interested, but the Bears and 49ers might want in on Garoppolo as well.

'I've seen him on tape because we had a common opponent in Miami,'' McCown said. 'He made some high level throws and did some things that would get you excited about his ability to maybe carry a franchise.'

The Cleveland Browns may be interested in New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo if the price is right.

Footballguys view: The Browns have the #33 pick, which is very strategic at the top of the second round, and they still have two first round picks, so they can add Garoppolo without forgoing a first-round pick and still give the Patriots something very valuable. Hue Jackson generally gets the best out of his quarterbacks, so it could be a good marriage of team and player.

49ers | Kyle Shanahan a fan of Jimmy Garoppolo     Sat Feb 4, 08:58 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo was Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan's No. 2-ranked quarterback in the 2014 NFL draft, according to a source. 'He was a very good thrower,'' Shanahan said. 'Tough guy, kept his eyes down the field, could get rid of the ball fast.'

Footballguys view: This is hugely relevant for the upcoming offseason because Shanahan will take over the 49ers head coaching job, and San Francisco could get into the derby for Garoppolo's services as an alternative to the 2017 draft quarterbacks.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo in high demand    Thu Feb 2, 04:14 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo has been linked to the Cleveland Browns and Chicago Bears as serious trade suitors, but the New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers could also be interested, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

Footballguys view: The Patriots always do a great job creating a market for their backup quarterbacks. They seem to be happy with Jacoby Brissett as a backup, so signs point to Garoppolo getting traded to the highest bidding, and possibly for a first-round pick.

Bears | Chicago interested in Jimmy Garoppolo    Thu Feb 2, 03:31 PM

The Chicago Bears will make a strong effort to acquire New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason, according to sources. The Bears have done significant work on Garoppolo and are comfortable with him as a quarterback.

Footballguys view: GM Ryan Pace and Garoppolo both went to Eastern Illinois, so the team could have an edge in negotiations if Garoppolo's wishes are factored in. He would have the advantage of a strong running game behind Jordan Howard and a defense that is coming around with some strong additions in the front seven during John Fox's first two seasons as head coach.

Texans | Houston could pursue Jimmy Garoppolo    Tue Jan 31, 12:26 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo could be a possible trade target for the Houston Texans, according to the Houston Chronicle's Aaron Wilson.

Footballguys view: The Texans are obviously in the market for a quarterback with Brock Osweiler's failings, but they are on the hook for 16 million guaranteed dollars to Osweiler this year. If they trade what would likely be a first-round pick for Garoppolo, they would have to tie up an inordinate amount of money if they sign Garoppolo to a long-term deal and keep Osweiler (which seems to be impossible to avoid). Alternatively, they could wait until 2018 to offer Garoppolo a deal, but if he plays well in 2017, the price will be much higher than Osweiler's. It makes sense from a team need point of view, but the contract given to Osweiler hurts the possibility of it happening.

Patriots | Jimmy Garoppolo may not fetch first-rounder?    Tue Jan 24, 12:51 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to a hot name on the trade market this offseason, but the MMQB's Andrew Brandt believes it is 'delusional' to think another team will hand over a first-round pick for the backup signal-caller.

Footballguys view: Garoppolo was a second-round pick for the Patriots in 2014, and he may not be able to draw a higher pick from any team interested in trading for him. There are a few backup QBs around the league that have some trade appeal, but these type of deals don't materialize often. If the Pats can't find a good price for Garoppolo, he could play out the last year of his rookie contract in 2017. They would get a premium compensatory pick when Garoppolo left (likely with a large contract) in 2018 free agency.

Patriots | Pats open to moving Jimmy Garoppolo    Sun Jan 22, 01:10 PM

The New England Patriots will be willing to listen to trade offers for QB Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason and will be looking for at least a first-round pick in return.

Footballguys view: Anyone can be traded so long as the price is right. Garoppolo was a second-round pick for the team in 2014 out of Eastern Illinois. He's known as an accurate QB on short-to-intermediate routes. Garoppolo needs better pocket presence if he's going to live up to his potential as a pro. The Patriots will also have to make sure they are comfortable with QB Jacoby Brissett as their No. 2 quarterback before moving Garoppolo.

Browns | Jimmy Garoppolo to be offseason target?    Sat Dec 10, 07:23 PM

New England Patriots QB Jimmy Garoppolo is expected to be a primary offseason trade target for the Cleveland Browns, according to former Browns and Patriots executive Mike Lombardi.

Footballguys view: The Browns certainly have the draft capital to do so. They are in need of a franchise quarterback, but pulling Garoppolo away from the Patriots could take a first-round pick...and maybe more than one. It will be an interesting offseason for the Browns to say the least.
