New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan and defensive coordinator Dennis Thurman might call for more 4-3 defensive fronts following the selection of DT Sheldon Richardson in the first round of the 2013 NFL Draft. The team has the makings of a formidable front with Richardson, DLs Muhammad Wilkerson, Quinton Coples and NT Kenrick Ellis. The team also signed NT Antonio Garay during the offseason.

Updating a previous report, San Diego Chargers NT Antonio Garay is the most apparent situation where the team can create additional roster and salary cap space in 2013. He signed a two-year contract in 2012 that paid a base salary of $825,000, with a $750,000 signing bonus. In 2013, his base salary is $3.5 million with an additional $1.5 million bonus if he's on the Week 1 roster. None of that $5 million is guaranteed, so a release would clear the books for the team, leaving only $375,000, the prorated sum of last year's signing bonus, in dead money against the cap moving forward.

San Diego Chargers head coach Norv Turner said Wednesday, Oct. 3, that NT Antonio Garay has been absent because others are playing well, and there isn't much room in the scheme. 'Aubrayo Franklin, Cam Thomas, all of those five defensive linemen are playing awfully well,' Turner said. 'The nature of the game right now, the way the games are played, the type of personnel teams are using, it's hard to dress more than five defensive linemen in a 3-4 defense.'
