Titans | Blaine Gabbert top option for backup job    Sat Jun 2, 03:26 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Blaine Gabbert is the clear favorite for the No. 2 quarterback job over QB Luke Falk because of his experience.

Footballguys view: Gabbert has the experience to give the team veteran depth behind starter Marcus Mariota. He's not an exciting option if thrust into the starting lineup, but Falk has some work to do in order to be a good backup at the pro level. During his college career at Washington State, Falk filled the air with footballs...mostly playing out of the shotgun. Falk can make the 53-man roster if the team decides to keep three quarterbacks.

Titans | Blaine Gabbert likely the No. 2 QB    Sat May 5, 09:55 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Blaine Gabbert is the favorite to be the backup quarterback in 2018 ahead of QB Luke Falk, according to Jim Wyatt of TitansOnline.com.

Footballguys view: That makes sense for a couple of reasons. Gabbert has plenty of starting experience and gives them a veteran presence behind starter Marcus Mariota. Plus, Falk needs time to adjust and develop. He's a smart and accurate quarterback, with a dash of Kirk Cousins to his game. However, Falk took exactly zero snaps from under center in 2017 and has to get acclimated to the pro game.

Titans | Blaine Gabbert agrees with Titans    Tue Mar 27, 08:15 AM

Free-agent QB Blaine Gabbert (Cardinals) agreed to an undisclosed contract with the Tennessee Titans Monday, March 26.

Footballguys view: Gabbert now will give the team veteran depth behind starter Marcus Mariota. They released Matt Cassel earlier this year and Gabbert basically takes his spot.

Cardinals | Arizona will be aggressive in QB search    Tue Feb 13, 02:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals QBs Blaine Gabbert and Drew Stanton will likely be competing with another quarterback this offseason for the starting quarterback job. Team owner Michael Bidwill said the Cardinals will be aggressive in their search for a new starting quarterback following the retirement of QB Carson Palmer.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals may not be players in the free agent market. We don't see them going after potentially available guys like Kirk Cousins or Case Keenum. However, we do see the Cardinals moving up in the draft for a potential franchise quarterback. They currently have the 15th overall pick, but a move inside the top-10 for someone like Josh Allen (Wyoming) would not be a surprise.

Cardinals | Drew Stanton will start     Mon Dec 18, 02:21 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton will start against the New York Giants in Week 16 in place of QB Blaine Gabbert, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have a winnable game against the Giants in Week 16, but don't get tempted to plug Stanton in as a streaming option at quarterback. He may be better than Blaine Gabbert, but that's not saying much.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert doesn't do much    Sun Dec 17, 05:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert completed 16 of his 41 pass attempts for 189 yards, no touchdowns and one interception in the Week 15 road loss against the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Gabbert and the Cardinals had to settle for five field goals in a loss that officially ended their postseason hopes. He'll get the weak Giants defense next week, but Gabbert is back to being the type of quarterback that takes value out of his offense after a brief glimmer in a good game against his former team, the Jaguars.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert could start next season    Tue Nov 28, 10:28 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert could be the starting quarterback next season if QB Carson Palmer retires, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals are likely to be in the market for a quarterback of the future in 2018...especially if (when?) Carson Palmer retires. Gabbert is no long-term solution but he could serve as a bridge quarterback to fill in while a young player is groomed.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert will remain starter    Mon Nov 27, 02:34 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert will start again next week no matter the status of QB Drew Stanton (knee), according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Gabbert won the 'Gabbert Bowl' against his former team the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday. It will be another tough matchup in Week 13 as the Cardinals are at home to play the Rams.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert will start again     Mon Nov 20, 02:28 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert will remain the starter at least until QB Drew Stanton (knee) is back at full health, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals lost to the Texans on Sunday, but Gabbert wasn't terrible. He did throw two interceptions, but he also tossed the ball for 257 yards and three touchdowns. He's got a tough matchup against the Jaguars in Week 12.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert tosses three TDs    Sun Nov 19, 09:04 PM

Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert completed 22 of his 34 pass attempts for 257 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions in Week 11 against the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Gabbert was very good and should remain the starter even when Drew Stanton is healthy enough to play again. He appears to have a future again as a backup, although his old Jaguars team will probably make him look bad next week. Gabbert is potentially worth a start in future weeks in 2QB/Superflex leagues.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert to start    Wed Nov 15, 09:30 AM

Arizona Cardinals QB Blaine Gabbert will start in Week 11 against the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Gabbert gets a chance with Drew Stanton (knee) banged up. We don't see a big difference between the two QBs, and fantasy owners have better options out there...even in start-2QB leagues.

Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton (knee) participated in practice Tuesay, Nov. 14, according to head coach Bruce Arians, although it's unclear how much he was able to do. QB Blaine Gabbert did receive some first-team repetitions.

Footballguys view: Gabbert or Stanton is like the choice between airline food and hospital food. Both will get the job done, but neither one gets you real excited. Fantasy owners have better options out there, even in start-2QB leagues or QB-flex formats.

Arizona Cardinals QB Drew Stanton (knee) suffered a sprained knee during the team's Week 10 game and could miss a week or two, according to sources.

Cardinals | Blaine Gabbert signing with Arizona    Wed May 10, 07:21 PM

Free-agent QB Blaine Gabbert (49ers) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals Wednesday, May 10, according to a source. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals have been linked to Gabbert for some time. He'll compete with Drew Stanton to be the primary backup behind Carson Palmer in 2017. We're not expecting him to rejuvenate his career in the desert, but having Bruce Arians tutor him could do Gabbert a world of good.

Cardinals | Arizona works out Blaine Gabbert    Mon May 8, 06:56 PM

Free-agent QB Blaine Gabbert (49ers) worked out for the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, May 4.

Footballguys view: The connection between the Cardinals and Gabbert has been there for some time. They didn't add a quarterback in the 2017 NFL draft, so perhaps they'd add Gabbert to compete with Drew Stanton to be the primary backup behind Carson Palmer.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick bench in loss    Sun Dec 4, 04:08 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick was benched in the fourth quarter of the team's Week 13 after he completed only one of his five passes for four yards during the game. He also sacked five times during the game and lost 25 yards. Kaepernick was replaced by QB Blaine Gabbert during the game.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick was a fantasy QB1 going into this one. The conditions certainly played a role and Chip Kelly said the most isn't permanent, but now it will be very tough to trust Kaepernick if he starts against the Jets next week.

  49ers | San Francisco's Friday injury report    Fri Oct 21, 08:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Carlos Hyde (shoulder) did not participate in practice and has been ruled out for Week 7. DT Glenn Dorsey (knee) and CB Rashard Robinson (concussion) were limited during practice and are listed as questionable. DT Arik Armstead (shoulder), OG Zane Beadles (ankle), DT DeForest Buckner (foot), DT Quinton Dial (knee), QB Blaine Gabbert (back), OG Josh Garnett (foot), SS Jaquiski Tartt (quadriceps) and CB Jimmie Ward (quadriceps) fully participated in practice and are not on the injury report.

Footballguys view: Shaun Draughn, Mike Davis, and maybe practice squad back DuJuan Harris will split carries against the Bucs run defense that could get Gerald McCoy back this week. The 49ers are unlikely to have success running the ball.

49ers | Colin Kaepernick to start Week 6    Tue Oct 11, 01:43 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick has been named the starter for Week 6 against the Buffalo Bills due to what head coach Chip Kelly called 'a football decision'. He replaces Blaine Gabbert.

Footballguys view: On paper, Kaepernick looks like a good fit for the Kelly offense because of his athleticism and ability to make plays outside the pocket. We're not sure who he will favor as a target, but guys like Jeremy Kerley and Vance McDonald (when healthy) could get more looks.

49ers | San Fran taking hard look at QB position    Mon Oct 10, 12:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert's job status continues to be an open-ended question, as head coach Chip Kelly suggested the team is 'looking at every option' at the position.

Footballguys view: We're likely to see a QB switch soon. The 49ers could turn things over to Colin Kaepernick due to Gabbert's struggles. On paper, Kaepernick seems like a good fit for Kelly's system.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert could be benched    Fri Oct 7, 08:39 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert's starting job will be evaluated after the Week 5 loss, according to head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly emphatically said Gabbert has performed better than QB Colin Kaepernick in practice, which is why Gabbert has started.

Footballguys view: Practice is just practice and Gabbert's inability to consistently test the defense with his arm and avoid egregious errors is keeping the 49ers from having a chance to win. Kaepernick will start eventually and his running ability makes him an intriguing potential option. He should be owned in all 2QB/superflex/deep leagues.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert sacked seven times    Fri Oct 7, 12:11 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert completed 18 of his 31 passes for 162 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions and was sacked seven times in a 33-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals Thursday, Oct. 6. He also ran 10 times for 70 yards and a touchdown.

Footballguys view: Gabbert was roundly booed at one point early on, as the crowd called for Colin Kaepernick, and responded with an 82-yard touchdown drive. And then he promptly threw another pick, and the chants for Kap started up again. We have no idea what is keeping Chip Kelly from pulling the trigger and making a change, but there's no way you can trust anyone here as a fantasy starter.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert remains the starter    Tue Sep 27, 09:39 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert will remain the starting quarterback, in part, because he's better in practice than QB Colin Kaepernick.

Footballguys view: For now. Gabbert is better in practice, but he may not be better in games. There are other QBs in NFL history that struggled in practice (Chad Pennington, Tim Tebow) but found ways to make plays in games. Kaepernick could be fantasy relevant as (on paper) he looks like a good fit for the Chip Kelly system. A running QB like Kaepernick could easily be a starter for fantasy owners -- especially as we work through the bye-week gauntlet. Stay tuned.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert named starter in San Fran    Sat Sep 3, 05:55 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert has been named the starting quarterback over Colin Kaepernick, head coach Chip Kelly announced Saturday, Sept. 3.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Gabbert was able to catapult his way to the top of the depth chart as Kaepernick had three offseason surgeries that he had to recover from. We're not looking for Gabbert to do much from a fantasy perspective.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick will play in the preseason finale, and QB Blaine Gabbert will sit out, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: Kaepernick has an opportunity to showcase what talent he has at this point in his career. We'll see if he can be a difference maker in this game.

San Francisco QB Blaine Gabbert and QB Colin Kaepernick are still competing for the starting job, according to head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: It may be open, but Gabbert is in the lead. Kaepernick had three offseason surgeries, and he's spent a majority of the time this year recovering from those procedures. Gabbert isn't great, but he's better than a banged up Kaepernick.

49ers | Blaine Gabbert likely will start Friday    Fri Aug 26, 07:53 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Blaine Gabbert likely will be the starting quarterback for the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26.

Footballguys view: Colin Kaepernick was in play to get the start, but Gabbert remains in the presumptive lead to start Week 1 because Kaepernick has had so little time getting acclimated to Chip Kelly's system. The outcome of this battle will affect the value of every player in the 49ers offense, with Gabbert helping the short passing game and Kaepernick helping the running game.

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick (arm) could start the preseason game against the Green Bay Packers Friday, Aug. 26, since QB Blaine Gabbert started the first two preseason games.

Footballguys view: The 49ers appear reluctant to anoint Gabbert the starter, so if Kaepernick is functional, he could win this job. It would be better for the 49ers running game, but Kaepernick took all the wind out of the sails of the passing game last year.

49ers | Vance McDonald emerging as weapon    Mon Aug 22, 12:01 AM

San Francisco 49ers TE Vance McDonald has caught five passes for 92 yards from QB Blaine Gabbert through two preseason games.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners looking to wait on TE. The Chip Kelly offense regularly features the TE as the first read after the belly option with the RB. A QB like Blaine Gabbert should use McDonald early and often as a security blanket when looking to move the chains through the air. Catching 75 passes and finishing as a top-10 fantasy TE is not out of the question for McDonald.
