NFL | Josh Freeman retires    Sat May 26, 05:07 PM

Former NFL QB Josh Freeman has decided to retire from professional football.

Footballguys view: Freeman was trying to make a comeback in the CFL but has decided to call it quits. "We would like to thank Josh for his work and dedication. He was a consummate professional throughout camp," Montreal Alouettes General Manager Kavis Reed said. "We respect his decision and we wish him the best in the future." A first-round pick in 2009 (Buccaneers), Freeman never played up to his potential as a pro.

NFL | Josh Freeman headed to CFL    Fri Jan 12, 09:39 PM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Colts) has signed a two-year deal for the Montreal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League.

Footballguys view: An interesting move to say the least. A first-round pick of the Buccaneers (2009), Freeman has spent the last two years out of the league. He's got a big arm and could stretch the field in the wide open Canadian game.

Colts | Matt Hasselbeck not in Colts' plans    Sun Feb 28, 02:45 PM

Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck was told by the Colts that he is not in their plans for next season. QB Josh Freeman is expected to back up QB Andrew Luck.

Footballguys view: Freeman is not a good backup option. We think it would be better just to keep Hasselbeck around, but the Colts seem to have other plans.

Colts | Josh Freeman, Ryan Lindley tag-team    Sun Jan 3, 05:37 PM

Indianapolis Colts QBs Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley combined to guide the team to a 30-24 victory over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday, Jan. 3. Freeman finished 15 of 28 for 149 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Lindley was 6 of 10 for 58 yards and one score.

Colts | Josh Freeman to face Tennessee    Sun Jan 3, 10:09 AM

Indianapolis Colts QB Josh Freeman is expected to start Week 17's game against the Tennessee Titans, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Freeman has a chance to revive his career in this game and possibly throw his hat into the ring to be the Colts backup quarterback next season with Matt Hasselbeck taking a beating this year.

Colts | Josh Freeman, Ryan Lindley share reps    Wed Dec 30, 10:23 PM

Indianapolis Colts QBs Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley, each signed this week, took a majority of the quarterback reps in practice Wednesday, Dec. 30.

Footballguys view: With these two splitting reps, it could have been put together in one blooper reel. Neither option is great for the Colts in Week 17.

Colts | Indy down to Josh Freeman, Ryan Lindley    Wed Dec 30, 06:38 PM

Indianapolis Colts QBs Josh Freeman and Ryan Lindley are the likely options to start in Week 17 against the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: This is a poor option for the Colts. Avoid your players from the Colts passing game. However, look for Frank Gore to have a good day.

Colts | Indy starting QB unknown    Wed Dec 30, 01:43 PM

There is no update on who the Indianapolis Colts plan to start at quarterback in Week 17 against the Tennessee Titans between QBs Josh Freeman, Ryan Lindley and Stephen Morris. QB Andrew Luck (abdomen, kidney) has already been ruled out.

Footballguys view: Freeman and Lindley have starting experience, but neither are exciting options. Morris is a technically-sound quarterback with nice athleticism, but he struggles with accuracy as a passer. While we're avoiding the Colts passing game, we do love Frank Gore and the Colts defense as DFS plays this week.

Colts | Sign Josh Freeman    Tue Dec 29, 03:53 PM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Dolphins) was signed by the Indianapolis Colts Tuesday, Dec. 29.

Footballguys view: The Colts may be starting Stephen Morris this week. Freeman has experience as a starter, but his pro career has quickly gone off the rails.

Colts | Josh Freeman working out for Colts    Mon Dec 28, 10:55 AM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Dolphins) is working out for the Indianapolis Colts Monday, Dec. 28.

Footballguys view: With Matt Hasselbeck (shoulder) and Charlie Whitehurst (hamstring) banged up, the team has Stephen Morris (signed last week) as their only healthy quarterback. Freeman hasn't taken a snap since 2013, but he did spend time with the Dolphins earlier this year. He completed only 49.7 percent of his passes in the preseason with Miami.

Dolphins | Josh Freeman cut    Fri Sep 4, 04:51 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Freeman was released Friday, Sept. 4.

Footballguys view: Freeman was one of the rising young stars at quarterback but Greg Schiano's arrival in Tampa Bay caused his star to fall quickly. Freeman's last meaningful action was a disaster when he was rushed to the field too early in Minnesota. It might be the last we see of him in the NFL regular season.

Dolphins | Josh Freeman re-signs with Miami    Tue Jul 28, 10:39 AM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Dolphins) was re-signed by the Miami Dolphins Tuesday, July 28, according to his agent, Ron Freeman.

Footballguys view: Looks like the team needed a camp arm back. The team just released Freeman on Friday, and now he's back. We'd be shocked if he did enough in camp to make the final roster.

Dolphins | Josh Freeman released    Fri Jul 24, 04:49 PM

Miami Dolphins QB Josh Freeman was released Friday, July 24.

Footballguys view: Freeman has been trying to stick around with the Dolphins as their third quarterback. The team must not have been impressed as Freeman gets his walking papers today. The Dolphins move forward with Matt Moore and McLeod Bethel-Thompson as the backup quarterbacks behind Ryan Tannehill.

Dolphins | Josh Freeman signs    Thu Apr 2, 06:26 PM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Buccaneers) has signed a two-year deal with the Miami Dolphins. Financial terms were undisclosed.

Footballguys view: Still only 27-years old, Freeman was terrible during the 2013 season with the Bucs and the Vikings. He was with the Giants briefly last year, but spent the 2014 season out of football. Matt Moore is the primary backup behind Ryan Tannehill, and signing Freeman won't change that. He's a big arm and could spend the season as the Dolphins QB3 in a best-case scenario.

NFL | Josh Freeman to work with Jon Gruden, QB guru    Mon Jun 16, 06:15 PM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Giants) will work out with former head coach Jon Gruden next week and quarterback guru Terry Shea the following week as he looks to put his career back on track.

Footballguys view: Freeman has work to do on the field, but he has to improve things off the field as well. He needs to take his opportunity seriously if he ever wants to get back to being a starting quarterback at the pro level. Working with Gruden will help, but we're not sure teams are going to be lining up around the block to sign the former first-round pick.

Giants | Josh Freeman practice struggles    Fri May 30, 05:59 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Giants) lined up the offense incorrectly in New York Giants' practice Thursday, May 29, and was pulled immediately before the play was ever run. Freeman was released Friday, May 30.

Footballguys view: Freeman's fall from grace has been quite fall. The former first-round pick has now bounced from three different teams in one year. He was always a bad fit for the new system under Ben McAdoo. Freeman was never known for his work ethic or discipline which made him a bad fit for renowned disciplinarian Tom Coughlin. He might get a chance somewhere else if QB injuries happen in training camp.

Giants | Cut Josh Freeman    Fri May 30, 04:21 PM

The New York Giants cut QB Josh Freeman Friday, May 30.

Footballguys view: Three teams in one year is not a good sign for Freeman's future. He was always an odd fit for the Giants. Freeman is still only 26 years old, but his future as an NFL quarterback is very much in doubt.

Giants | Ryan Nassib works as backup    Wed May 28, 09:33 PM

New York Giants QB Ryan Nassib was working as the primary backup to QB Eli Manning (ankle) during practice Wednesday, May 28, in organized team activities (OTAs). QB Curtis Painter (knee) and QB Josh Freeman also took reps.

Footballguys view: It's really hard to know exactly how to take this, other than perhaps everyone is going to get a shot. On the one hand, Nassib getting those reps is a sign the team is confident enough in his progress to give him a chance to prove himself. On the other hand, this may just be the result of Josh Freeman not knowing the playbook yet and knowing what they have in Painter. We expect Nassib to have to put together a strong preseason and training camp (last year's was not good) in order to win the backup job. This is critical as the Giants tend to hold just a pair of quarterbacks on the roster and if he doesn't win that job, he could end up on the cut list.

Giants | Keeping options open on Ryan Nassib    Thu May 1, 03:51 PM

New York Giants general manager Jerry Reese said he is keeping his options open when it comes to QB Ryan Nassib. 'We like Nassib, but he really hasn't had the chance to do a lot for us, and so we're going to take a real good look at him in the spring. We still think he's a really good player. He hasn't had the chance to play yet, but he's going to get a lot of work this spring, and obviously he'll get a lot of work in the preseason. Along with Curtis Painter and Josh Freeman there's competition.'

Footballguys view: When the Giants picked up Josh Freeman and Curtis Painter, some felt that it spelled doom for second-year player Ryan Nassib, but perhaps not. It could be that the Giants are trying to raise Nassib's trade value, or it could be they like him but don't want to risk the season with an unproven commodity if Manning gets hurt. If Nassib does get traded, it's likely in the next week as we head to the draft.

Giants | Josh Freeman financials    Wed Apr 23, 02:31 AM

New York Giants QB Josh Freeman signed a minimum-salary deal that only guarantees $55,000 in signing bonuses and $10,000 in workout bonuses. Assuming he plays out the season, Freeman will earn $795,000 and the cap hit for the team will be $635,000.

Footballguys view: Freeman got three million dollars just to play lousy football for a game and ride the bench the rest of the season. His NFL stock has bottomed out at age 26.

Packers | Had interest in Josh Freeman    Wed Apr 16, 12:53 PM

The Green Bay Packers would have had interest in New York Giants QB Josh Freeman if QB Matt Flynn did not re-sign with the team.

Footballguys view: Why? Backup quarterbacks need to be ready to start when the opportunity arises. Freeman didn't prepare enough when he was cemented as the starter with the Buccaneers. He certainly didn't look good during his brief time with the Vikings either.

Giants | One-year deal for Josh Freeman    Wed Apr 16, 12:25 PM

Giants | Josh Freeman agrees to terms    Wed Apr 16, 12:10 PM

The New York Giants have agreed to terms with free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Vikings). Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Granpa Coughlin throwing us a curveball here. Freeman is not what you'd call disciplined, which is exact opposite of what you expect from Coughlin's players. We'll see if he can turn things around on his third chance in the NFL. Freeman will compete with second-year pro Ryan Nassib to be the backup behind Eli Manning.

Giants | Josh Freeman working out Tuesday    Mon Apr 14, 02:01 PM

Updating a previous report, the New York Giants will work out free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Vikings) Tuesday, April 15.

Giants | Josh Freeman to work out    Fri Apr 11, 09:58 AM

The New York Giants will work out free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Vikings) next week.

Bears | Meet with Josh Freeman    Mon Apr 7, 05:07 PM

The Chicago Bears met with free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Vikings) Monday, April 7.

Footballguys view: Freeman got a fresh start with the Vikings last year, but he failed to impress. If added to the Bears, Freeman would compete for the backup job behind Jay Cutler. The Bears are looking for quarterback depth after losing Josh McCown to the Buccaneers in free agency.

Raiders | Matt Schaub top QB target    Fri Mar 14, 09:01 PM

Houston Texans QB Matt Schaub is the Oakland Raiders' top quarterback target if he is released this offseason. The team is also interested in New York Jets QB Mark Sanchez if he is released. Free-agent QBs Josh Freeman (Vikings) and Michael Vick (Eagles) are also expected to be options.

Footballguys view: Schaub may not quite be to the "veteran backup" stage of his career. If added, Schaub would be the favorite to start over guys like Matt McGloin or Terrelle Pryor.

Raiders | Could be interested in Josh Freeman    Sat Feb 1, 05:49 PM

The Oakland Raiders could be a potential landing spot for Minnesota Vikings QB Josh Freeman if he's released. Offensive coordinator Greg Olson had success with Freeman in Tampa Bay.

Footballguys view: This sounds more like a move the Raiders would make. They've historically taken plenty of second (or third) chance players with varying results. The relationship between Olson and Freeman could help the veteran quarterback get his career back on track.

Vikings | Josh Freeman was late for meetings    Tue Dec 31, 08:59 PM

Free-agent QB Josh Freeman (Vikings) was late for numerous meetings in his roughly three months with the Minnesota Vikings, according to four people with knowledge of the situation. A third player said Freeman was often the last player to the facility.

Footballguys view: Freeman did not make a positive impression on (or apparently off) the football field in 2013. He may find it difficult to turn his career around unless he starts taking things more seriously.

The Minnesota Vikings have declared RB Adrian Peterson, QB Josh Freeman, DL Letroy Guion, OT Mike Remmers, WR Rodney Smith, RB Toby Gerhart, CB Xavier Rhodes inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Peterson has been playing hurt for most of the season due to any number of injuries. He didn't quite deliver for teams that took him #1 overall, but he was far from the worst pick in the first round of fantasy drafts this year.

Vikings | Josh Freeman has interest in returning    Fri Dec 27, 09:20 PM

Minnesota Vikings QB Josh Freeman said Friday, Dec. 27, that he would consider re-signing with the team next season. 'I definitely have interest in coming back, for sure,' Freeman said. 'It's a great organization, a great team.'

Vikings | Christian Ponder receives another start    Wed Nov 20, 12:43 PM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier said QB Christian Ponder will be the starting quarterback Week 12. Frazier said QB Matt Cassel likely will be the No. 2 quarterback, but QB Josh Freeman could also be active for the game.

Footballguys view: Ponder gives the offense more buoyancy than the other two. He struggled (predictably) last week against Seattle, but Ponder could have a better day against the Packers this week.

Vikings | HC mum on Week 12 quarterback    Sun Nov 17, 11:00 PM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier was non-committal when asked Sunday, Nov. 17, who his Week 12 quarterback would be against the Green Bay Packers. QB Christian Ponder was terrible in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks, so QB Matt Cassel or QB Josh Freeman could get another chance.

Vikings | Christian Ponder taking first-team snaps    Thu Nov 14, 02:18 PM

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB Christian Ponder (shoulder) took most of the first-team snaps in practice Wednesday, Nov. 13, and expects to play in Week 11 against the Seattle Seahawks. Head coach Leslie Frazier is still unsure if Ponder will start, and he said QB Josh Freeman is a candidate to start if Ponder can't go. 'Ponder looked good,' said WR Greg Jennings. 'He practiced and (was) getting the game plan in and making some throws.'

Footballguys view: As expected, Ponder will hold onto the job. He's got a myriad of issues to overcome before he wins it for next year, but he probably gives the Vikings the best shot at escaping the season with a win or two more. Meanwhile the only thing he gives fantasy owners a shot as is a screaming ulcer.

Vikings | Josh Freeman wants to start    Sat Nov 9, 10:58 AM

Minnesota Vikings QB Josh Freeman said he wants to start again, and said he is making progress since his first game. 'I'm making a lot of progress from my first game,' Freeman said in the locker room. 'I can't speak for the coaches. I can't speak for (head coach) Leslie (Frazier). I'm just working as hard as I can. When they need me to go in I plan to go in and play well, whenever that may be.'

Footballguys view: Freeman wants to start, but he simply has to play better in order for that to happen. So long as Christian Ponder is healthy he should be the starter unless he struggles (which is possible). Bottom line; avoid Freeman.

Vikings | Josh Freeman could start again    Thu Nov 7, 07:52 PM

Minnesota Vikings QB Josh Freeman could get another chance to start this season if QB Christian Ponder struggles as the starter.

Footballguys view: If Ponder plays badly, you could see Freeman. They spent the money so once he's used to the playbook it seems silly to not use him. But if Ponder does well, why make a change? It's Ponder though, so expect Freeman to make an appearance.

Vikings | Teammate supports Christian Ponder as starter    Thu Oct 31, 12:26 PM

Minnesota Vikings C John Sullivan is supporting QB Christian Ponder as the team's starter, and he thinks he should receive a second straight start against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 9. '(Ponder) prepared really hard and he went out there and laid it all on the line,' Sullivan said. 'You know, you see that last run that he made when things were getting out of reach (a 19-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter against the Packers on Sunday) and he's still out there fighting until the end. I mean, that's not my decision. But I'd love to see him stay back there, of course.'

Footballguys view: This highlights the chaos in not having a real solid answer at quarterback or bringing someone in mid-season. The guys who know Ponder will back him publicly--even if he's not the answer. Which, to most eyes, he isn't. Hopefully if Josh Freeman gets another shot, the team will give him their best effort but a locker room divide is the last thing this team needs.

Vikings | Back to Josh Freeman at QB?    Wed Oct 30, 09:55 PM

Updating a previous report, the Minnesota Vikings have not announced a starting quarterback for Week 9, but ESPN's Ed Werder expects that the team will turn to QB Josh Freeman (concussion) again after QB Christian Ponder was unimpressive in place of Freeman in Week 8.

Footballguys view: We have zero clarity on this right now. Freeman or Ponder is like the choice between airline food or hospital food. Both will get the job done, but neither gets you really excited.

Vikings | No decision on starting QB    Wed Oct 30, 01:43 PM

Minnesota Vikings head coach Leslie Frazier has not made a decision on who will start at quarterback between QBs Christian Ponder and Josh Freeman in Week 9 against the Dallas Cowboys.
