Packers | More on Johnathan Franklin transaction    Mon Jun 23, 10:50 AM

Updating previous reports, the Green Bay Packers cut RB Johnathan Franklin (neck) with a failed-physical designation.

Footballguys view: So sad to see Franklin's career after one season. Coming out of UCLA last year, Franklin was a good all-purpose back who could have had a long career because he was a good runner and receiver out of the backfield. Neck injuries are nothing to mess around with and have ended several careers in the NFL.

Packers | Officially release Johnathan Franklin    Fri Jun 20, 03:32 PM

Updating a previous report, the Green Bay Packers officially released RB Johnathan Franklin Friday, June 20.

Footballguys view: It's sad that it has to end this way. Franklin was a talented running back, but neck injuries have ended plenty of careers in the NFL. Guys like Sterling Sharpe, Eric Dickerson and Al Wilson saw their careers cut short due to neck injuries.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin to be released    Thu Jun 19, 05:35 PM

The Green Bay Packers will release RB Johnathan Franklin (neck) with the waived/injured designation Friday, June 20, according to his agent, Kenny Zuckerman. It's unknown if Franklin is dealing with stenosis, which is a narrowing of the spinal column that makes a person susceptible to neck injuries.

Footballguys view: He'll get an injury settlement and move on. Unlike Nick Collins or Jermichael Finley, we don't expect him to try and fight for a comeback. We hope the Packers can help in his transition and wish him the best of luck in the next phase of his life.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin done with Packers    Thu Jun 19, 02:47 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin's (neck) career as a Packer is over due to a lingering neck injury. Head coach Mike McCarthy said his status will be further addressed Friday, June 20.

Footballguys view: It's a tough break for Franklin just one year into his career. The Packers have a very conservative medical team, but better that than risk permanent, long-term damage by being too cavalier. Franklin sounds like he has a positive attitude going forward and we wish him the best of luck.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin neck injury a concern    Wed Jun 18, 02:50 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin (neck) has missed all offseason activities with a lingering neck injury. The team is reportedly concerned that the injury may be career-threatening. Franklin ended last season on Injured Reserve.

Footballguys view: The re-signing of James Starks makes a ton of sense now, as Franklin can't be counted on for any future contribution at this moment. It's ironic that Eddie Lacy's value is peaking as a rugged feature back, which Franklin's career is in jeopardy, when it was Lacy who had the long term durability concerns in the draft.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin still recovering    Tue Mar 25, 09:33 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin (neck) is still recovering from a neck injury which landed him on the season-ending Injured Reserve late in the year. Head coach Mike McCarthy said Franklin did not undergo surgery, and he only knows a limited amount about his rehab because Franklin has not met with doctors lately.

Footballguys view: This could also be a part of why the Packers re-signed James Starks. Franklin was considered a possible fourth-round steal in last year's draft, but he barely made the team and was left in Eddie Lacy's dust, although Franklin did shine in limited duty vs. Cincinnati last year.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin to IR    Wed Nov 27, 05:16 PM

The Green Bay Packers placed RB Johnathan Franklin (concussion, neck) on the season-ending Injured Reserve Wednesday, Nov. 27.

Footballguys view: Franklin had one 100-yard game this season, and has intriguing value in dynasty leagues. Make sure to throw out buy low offers in dynasty formats.

Packers | Have ideal RB split in mind    Fri Nov 22, 07:55 PM

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said Friday, Nov. 22, that ideally the team would like RB Eddie Lacy to handle the ball 20 times, with RB James Starks getting five carries and RB Johnathan Franklin handling the ball five times. It depends on the situation. If the game is on the line, Lacy 'will be the one carrying the ball.'

Footballguys view: Lacy is the clear-cut lead back so fantasy owners have nothing to worry about here. Starks is worth consideration as a "what the heck" flex most weeks as a change of pace back. We appreciate the dynasty value of Franklin, but he's not worth rostering in re-draft leagues.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin might get another shot    Fri Nov 22, 07:54 PM

Green Bay Packers running backs coach Alex Van Pelt said this week that RB Johnathan Franklin is not a forgotten man, and that the rookie would get another shot at some point. Franklin might offer a different dimension. 'Obviously he's quite different than the other two, size-wise, quickness, ability to make guys miss,' Van Pelt said Friday, Nov. 22. 'Things like that that he brings to the table. I'll still say we'll see him before the year is out.'

Footballguys view: Franklin broke some long plays against the Bengals in a 100-yard game, but he has too many holes in his game to win a large role right now. It's way too early to give up on him in dynasty leagues, but his redraft value is nil.

Packers | More focus on run game?    Tue Oct 15, 11:04 PM

The Green Bay Packers ranked fifth in rushing yards per game (140.8), and with several wide receivers banged up, there might be more of a focus on the run game going forward. 'I just think there's some growth there,' head coach Mike McCarthy said Tuesday, Oct. 15. 'You could see it when we got together in the spring. It was exciting once we got in pads in training camp.' The Packers threw the ball 122 times in the first three games, going 1-2. In the past two games, they ran 63 times to just 62 pass attempts, winning both games. RB Eddie Lacy has run for 219 yards over the past two weeks, and RBs James Starks and Johnathan Franklin have each hit the century mark once this season.

Footballguys view: The injuries to the wide receivers is going to do a couple of things. First, there could be a bit more emphasis on the ground game. Second, there should be more targets for tight end Jermichael Finley. Finally, we could see more targets for the running backs as receivers out of the backfield.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin benched    Mon Oct 7, 08:20 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin didn't receive another carry in Week 5 after he fumbled in the second quarter Sunday, Oct. 6. He has fumbled twice in his last four carries.

Footballguys view: Franklin had a 100-yard rushing performance in Week 3, but that doesn't matter if he can't hang onto the rock. Eddie Lacy took over and finished the game with 99 yards rushing. Lacy will continue to be the lead back so long as he can stay healthy.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin probable     Fri Oct 4, 05:31 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin (foot) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 4, and is listed as probable for Week 5.

Footballguys view: Consider Franklin a low-end flex with the size of his role unknown. He was impressive enough vs. Cincinnati to demand more touches even after Eddie Lacy returned this week, but their use could be dictate by game flow against the Lions.

Packers | To go with shared backfield?    Tue Oct 1, 12:38 PM

The Green Bay Packers may go with a combination of RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin in Week 5 against the Detroit Lions. RB James Starks (knee) is injured and may not suit up for the game. 'I think as far as running style, it really depends on the game plan, who you are playing and how you rotate those guys in,' head coach Mike McCarthy said. 'Some people try to run certain schemes with certain backs. Some people play them differently based on personnel groups. Those are game plan questions.'

Footballguys view: Franklin deserves a shot at more carries since he's coming off a 100-yard game in Week 3. Lacy is healthy and should be in the mix as well. The Packers backfield could have some fantasy value, but we'll have to wait and see how this split actually shakes out on game day.

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin rushed 13 times for 103 yards in Week 3, while RB James Starks (knee) left the game with an injury.

Footballguys view: Franklin looked much better than he did in the preseason. He was more decisive, patient, and he looked more explosive because of it. Franklin did fumble the game away for the Packers, which is a big negative mark against him.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin leaves    Sun Sep 22, 04:11 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin (undisclosed) left the Week 3 game with an undisclosed injury but has since returned. WR Jeremy Ross was lining up in the backfield in his absence.

Footballguys view: Franklin's fumble cost the Packers the game in some ways, but he also helped them build a lead with great work in relief of James Starks. He should definitely be a top waiver priority even though the Packers are going into their bye. Eddie Lacy owners are looking at a committee going forward.

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks (knee) left the Week 3 game with a knee injury and is questionable to return. RB Johnathan Franklin is playing in his place.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin likely will get time    Wed Sep 18, 02:34 PM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said RB Johnathan Franklin has been doing some good things and probably will receive some playing time during the team's Week 3 game.

Footballguys view: Franklin has had a disappointing start to his pro career. He was highly regarded coming out of UCLA because of his all-around ability. Franklin can be used effectively as a runner and receiver out of the backfield. He looked lost in the preseason but will now get a bigger role on offense if Eddie Lacy (concussion) misses time.

Packers | Eddie Lacy likely to miss Week 3    Tue Sep 17, 09:48 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (concussion) is likely to miss Week 3 and return in Week 5, following the team's bye week. He will likely be re-evaluated Wednesday, Sept. 18.

Footballguys view: We'll see veteran James Starks as the lead back for the Packers. Green Bay travels to Cincinnati to face the tough Bengals defense in Week 3. Starks had a 100-yard rushing performance in Week 2 but this matchup makes him only viable as a flex play for your fantasy team.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin expected to contribute    Sat Sep 14, 11:38 AM

Green Bay Packers running backs Alex Van Pelt said the team expects RB Johnathan Franklin to contribute this season even though he did not get an offensive snap Week 1. 'I think he is ready. I think he will help us this year. He'll definitely contribute on the offensive side of the ball. He's got a unique talent and ability in space. Going into that [San Francisco] game, it was probably good for him to sit and kind of watch the other guys. As the season goes on, he'll probably ask more of him,' Van Pelt said.

Footballguys view: Franklin seemed lost in the preseason and had a disappointing showing in training camp. He's a talented all-purpose back who can be effectively used as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. He could provide the team with a change of pace behind starter (and fellow rookie) Eddie Lacy.

Packers | DuJuan Harris to IR    Tue Aug 27, 01:42 PM

Green Bay Packers RB DuJuan Harris (knee) has been placed on Injured Reserve and will miss the 2013 season after a negative second opinion on his knee.

Footballguys view: The Packers' starting RB should now be rookie Eddie Lacy (Alabama). The Packers haven't had a 100-yard rusher in last 43 regular-season games (more than twice as long as any other active streak in NFL). That could change with Lacy toting the rock. Lacy is a between the tackles banger who saw 64.7 percent of his rushes there during his time at Alabama. His game is all about yards after contract as he has a bruising style. We'll see if Lacy can stay healthy throughout this season. While in college he was often bothered by nagging injuries even though he was only a 14 game starter.

Packers | Rookie RBs struggle in preseason game    Sat Aug 24, 11:40 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy rushed for minus five yards on eight carries in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 23, while RB Johnathan Franklin rushed for one yard on four carries.

Footballguys view: Lacy had looked good in the preseason up to this point. He is still in line to be the team's starter once the regular season opens up. Franklin has been one of the biggest rookie disappointments so far. He's looking tentative on the field and thus not impressing as a runner in between (or outside) the tackles.

Packers | James Starks last in rotation    Tue Aug 20, 12:15 AM

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks fumbled in the preseason game against the St. Louis Rams over the weekend, and he was last in the rotation of running backs behind RBs DuJuan Harris, Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin and Alex Green.

Footballguys view: Starks is not guaranteed a roster spot. He's always been a space runner who only looks good if the holes are huge. Starks lacks the creativity and elusiveness to make something happen if the holes aren't there. The Packers should move forward with a backfield that features both Lacy and Harris.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin not impressing    Mon Aug 19, 08:10 AM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin hasn't been impressive thus far in training camp. 'He looks like his numbers,' a personnel man said. 'He's not a real impressive guy. He plays small, and he doesn't play fast. I kind of liked him in college because he was so productive. But if you didn't know he was a draft pick, you'd think he was a free agent.'

Footballguys view: That's a scathing review of the rookie runner from UCLA. It's looking like Eddie Lacy as the favorite to win the starting job this year. Franklin should stick around on the roster but may not see much playing time (even on special teams) until he shows improved play.

Packers | Eddie Lacy likely to see most carries    Wed Aug 14, 12:22 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) is likely to see the most carries when he is healthy, followed by fellow rookie RB Johnathan Franklin, who has reportedly been adequate, but not yet special, during training camp.

Footballguys view: Lacy has upside in the fifth round because the Packers showed a willingness to lean one back in 2012, even though those backs had much less talent than Lacy. His durability is a big question, so handcuffing DuJuan Harris to Lacy might not be a bad idea.

Packers | No RBs stand out in blowout loss    Fri Aug 9, 11:22 PM

Green Bay Packers RB James Starks led the team with 38 rushing yards on 12 carries in the preseason game Friday, Aug. 9, against the Arizona Cardinals. RB Alex Green checked in with seven carries for 16 yards, while RB Johnathan Franklin posted six scampers for 14 yards. RB Eddie Lacy (hamstring) did not play due to a hamstring injury, and RB DuJuan Harris (knee) was absent due to a knee.

Footballguys view: Starks has always had talent--he just also has a propensity for injury. With Eddie Lacy and DuJuan Harris out, Starks, Johnathan Franklin and Alex Green had a chance to separate themselves, but didn't end up doing so. This still appears as if Eddie Lacy is at the front of the line for carries this season.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin appears to be the guy    Wed Jul 31, 05:38 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy appears to be a little heavy during training camp, and RB Johnathan Franklin appears to be have a chance to win the starting running back job.

Footballguys view: The Packers have a nice problem. Lacy is a banger between the tackles with size and a wicked spin move. Franklin is a good all-around RB who runs bigger than his size. This competition should continue through camp. Our very own Cecil Lammey compared Franklin to a smaller version of Frank Gore when he watched him from the sidelines during the week of practice for the Senior Bowl earlier this year.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin needs blocking to improve    Tue Jul 30, 09:21 PM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy puts a high value on pass protection, so RB Johnathan Franklin needs to improve his blocking if he wants to see more of the field. He has looked impressive running the ball, but he was reportedly overmatched Tuesday, July 30, in practice on a one-on-one drill which called for the running back to block a blitzing linebacker. 'I felt like the outside linebackers clearly got the best of the running backs today,' McCarthy said. 'We were too high. We weren't sitting down. We didn't have our head up. So it'll be good tape to watch. So that's a drill I'm sure we'll do again.'

Footballguys view: Franklin was one of our favorite RBs in this year's draft class. He can do it all and plays bigger than his size. Franklin is a good runner inside with some speed at the second level. He can also be used effectively as a receiver out of the backfield. However, it's all moot if he can't pass protect.

Packers | Eddie Lacy not worried about weight    Tue Jul 30, 04:04 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Eddie Lacy didn't reveal his exact weight, but he said his coaches have had no problem with his weight or conditioning during training camp after a picture was released Monday, July 29, that made him look bigger than normal and out of shape. 'I'm at a weight where I'm comfortable at and the coaching staff feels as though they're comfortable where I'm at,' Lacy said. 'So as far as that's concerned, we're all on the same page.'

Footballguys view: Lacy is a big back but that picture floating around from training camp was the polar opposite of Glamour Shots. Fantasy owners should overreact to the picture. We still see him as a RB3 option with upside in 2013. His current ADP is RB28 and he's coming off the board at 5.05 in 12 team PPR leagues.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin may have role immediately    Fri Jul 19, 07:12 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Johnathan Franklin could have a complementary role on offense immediately if he does not start because he is a natural pass catcher. Franklin may not be big enough to be an every-down running back.

Footballguys view: Franklin has the slashing style to operate well in the Packers offense, and he's a durable, versatile back. He'll get on the field in some way, shape, or form, and if he impresses, his role will grow. Franklin is a good target in the double digit rounds of PPR leagues.

Packers | Rookies only RB roster locks    Tue Jul 2, 06:26 PM

Green Bay Packers RBs Eddie Lacy and Johnathan Franklin are locks to make the roster. The rookies will be joined by some combination of Alex Green, DuJuan Harris (lung), James Starks and undrafted rookie Angelo Pease. Green and Starks have received first-team reps this offseason with the rookies studying the system and Harris sidelined.

Footballguys view: Harris is the best bet to make the team of the veterans, and Pease is likely ticketed for the practice squad. The final makeup and breakdown of touches in the Packers backfield is one of the most unknown of any in the league, so we'll be watching this closely for you during camp and the preseason.

Packers | RB Green the starter through much of OTAs    Mon Jun 17, 05:22 PM

Green Bay Packers RB Alex Green has been working as the starter through much of the team's offseason program. He's competing with rookies Eddie Lacy (Alabama) and Johnathan Franklin (UCLA) for the starting job in 2013.

Footballguys view: Lacy is expected to win the starting job during training camp. Green had a chance last year to prove himself as the starter but failed to impress. Lacy was drafted in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft to be the workhorse the team has been missing for years. We like Lacy as a RB3 with RB2 upside this season. Durability is a huge concern with Lacy and he'll need to stay healthy in order to play up to his potential.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin agrees to terms    Fri May 10, 01:51 PM

The Green Bay Packers have agreed to terms with fourth-round draft choice RB Johnathan Franklin on a four-year deal worth slightly more than $2.5 million.

Footballguys view: We love Franklin's natural skill set. He runs bigger than his size and can maneuver through trash at the line of scrimmage. Franklin is a good in space and proved at the Senior Bowl that he had the speed to make the corner if need be. He can also contribute as a receiver out of the backfield. Franklin will compete with fellow rookie RB Eddie Lacy to be the Packers starter in 2013.

Packers | Johnathan Franklin can take part in workouts    Fri May 10, 01:17 PM

Packers | Johnathan Franklin selected    Sat Apr 27, 01:32 PM

The Green Bay Packers have selected UCLA RB Johnathan Franklin with the 125th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Packers double dip in the backfield, a clear sign they are committed to keep Aaron Rodgers protected. Franklin had a great senior year and showed he can run between the tackles, play with speed and catch the ball. His pass protection can be improved but he and Eddie Lacy make this a deadly backfield. Franklin will likely see the early down work and Lacy will see more of the short yardage and goal line work. Now it's a matter of determining how many carries the team will commit to the run. The DuJuan Harris train is now parking in the 'out of service' station.

NFL | Johnathan Franklin receiving interest    Thu Apr 18, 02:07 PM

UCLA RB Johnathan Franklin is receiving interest from the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: Franklin is arguably the best all around RB in this draft class. He runs bigger than his size yet has the speed to get to the edge. Franklin had a very impressive week at the Senior Bowl earlier this year and his running style reminds scouts of Frank Gore (49ers).

Footballguys view: Franklin could be an option for the Rams in the second-round of the 2013 NFL Draft. He's a complete RB with perhaps the best all-around skill set in this class. Franklin runs bigger than his size and can be effective running between the tackles. He's also a good receiver out of the backfield.

Steelers | Meeting with two draft prospects    Thu Apr 4, 01:18 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are meeting with UCLA RB Johnathan Franklin and Texas Christian WR Josh Boyce Thursday, April 4.

Footballguys view: Franklin could be the team's lead back if he's added in the draft. He runs bigger than his size and has enough speed to get to the edge.
