Saints | Matt Flynn signed    Mon Nov 9, 08:06 PM

Free-agent QB Matt Flynn (Jets) signed with the New Orleans Saints Monday, Nov. 9. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: He should be the veteran backup behind Drew Brees. Rookie Garrett Grayson should continue as the team's third-string developmental quarterback.

Jets | Matt Flynn an option    Mon Nov 2, 04:32 PM

Free-agent QB Matt Flynn (Jets) is an option to be re-signed by the New York Jets, according to head coach Todd Bowles. QB Bryce Petty could also see more practice this week with both QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick (thumb) and Geno Smith (shoulder) injured.

Footballguys view: Petty just isn't ready. He has plenty of arm talent, but he ran a gimmicky system in college at Baylor and isn't used to going through progressions--or even taking snaps from under center.

Free-agent QB Christian Ponder (Raiders), QB Matt Flynn (Jets), QB Josh Johnson (Jets) and QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson (Dolphins) are working out for the Dallas Cowboys Tuesday, Sept. 22.

Footballguys view: We have confirmed that Uncle Rico was unable to make the workout due to his bus breaking down. The Cowboys need to find a suitable backup for Brandon Weeden while Tony Romo is out over the next several weeks.

Jets | Matt Flynn has injury    Wed Aug 19, 04:26 PM

New York Jets QB Matt Flynn (ankle) is recovering from an injured ankle and won't be ready to play for another week, according to head coach Todd Bowles. Flynn recently signed a one-year deal with the Jets.

Footballguys view: Flynn is recovering from an injury that bothered him during his brief stint with the Patriots. The veteran has made more than $18 million in his pro career despite only starting seven games during that time. Good work if you can get it. Flynn's roster spot should be safe as the primary backup behind Ryan Fitzpatrick. Rookie Bryce Petty should stick around as a third-string developmental quarterback.

Packers | Will let Matt Flynn walk    Mon Mar 9, 03:01 AM

Free-agent QB Matt Flynn (Packers) will be allowed to pursue other opportunities now that QB Scott Tolzien has been re-signed by the Green Bay Packers, according to sources.

Footballguys view: We can't imagine the market being white-hot for Flynn's services. Some team may be interested in adding Flynn as a backup. Outside of Green Bay, Flynn has not looked good.

Packers | Coaches torn over backup QB choice    Tue Feb 10, 02:10 AM

Green Bay Packers QB Scott Tolzien and QB Matt Flynn both have boosters among the team's assistant coaches. The coaching staff likes Tolzien's potential, but many like Flynn because he gives a 'security blanket feel' to the team. Packers QB Aaron Rodgers has said he would like to see both backups retained.

Footballguys view: Tolzien's potential? Um, okay. While the choice between Tolzien and Flynn is like the choice between airline food or hospital food, at the end of the day it just doesn't matter. Neither quarterback has much developmental upside, and the Packers would be in a ton of trouble if Aaron Rodgers misses time due to injury.

Packers | Backups may get equal time    Thu Aug 28, 01:36 PM

Green Bay Packers QBs Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien are expected to play in the final preseason game and still are competing for the No. 2 quarterback job. Head coach Mike McCarthy said he would like to give both quarterbacks equal playing time so he can evaluate better.

Footballguys view: The Packers may keep three quarterbacks but don't normally so this is a critical game. It's obviously close otherwise we'd have a much clearer situation so this is anyone's job. Tolzien has improved by leaps and bounds this offseason and looked a little sharper in the last preseason game. If he beats out Flynn, you may see Flynn cut. However if Tolzien is behind, we wouldn't be shocked if that was a situation in which there were three quarterbacks on the roster to protect Tolzien. We saw last season that a new quarterback isn't going to put up Aaron Rodgers numbers, so a handcuff isn't vital. The value of the others in the offense took a bit of a hit, but there was plenty of production so that isn't a big worry if we hit DEFCON "NOT RODGERS" again this year.

Packers | QB rotation announced    Sat Aug 16, 02:41 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers will start Saturday, Aug. 16, against the St. Louis Rams, followed by QBs Scott Tolzien, Matt Flynn and Chase Rettig.

Footballguys view: We'll see if Tolzien can beat out Flynn as the primary backup behind Rodgers. Flynn struggled when given the chance to start, but he is a decent backup in Green Bay.

Packers | Backup QB battle up in the air    Thu Aug 14, 06:28 PM

Green Bay Packers QBs Scott Tolzien and Matt Flynn are in a heated battle in training camp to be the backup to QB Aaron Rodgers this year. 'I think it's up in the air right now,' quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt said. 'It's in a competition. That's healthy for everybody.' Tolzien outplayed Flynn in the team's first preseason game over the weekend. Flynn has the advantage due to his knowledge of the system, but Tolzien has had a year to learn it and has improved considerably.

Footballguys view: Flynn performed well after his tour of other NFL teams dumb enough to give him starter money, but is a limited quarterback. Tolzien has more upside and a much more raw skill set. The Packers would rather not need to use a backup as they saw how that went when Rodgers went down last season. If he goes down again, it doesn't matter who is under center, there will be a drop off.

Packers | Two expected to compete for No. 2 QB job    Mon Jun 30, 04:03 PM

Green Bay Packers QBs Matt Flynn and Scott Tolzien are expected to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp. Head coach Mike McCarthy has mentioned that Tolzien has improved during the offseason. It is not known if the team will keep two or three quarterbacks on the final roster.

Footballguys view: Flynn is the veteran who knows the system well. Tolzien is more athletic, but lacks the accuracy that Flynn has as a passer. We'll see which one wins the primary backup job behind Aaron Rodgers when they compete for the spot in training camp.

Packers | Had interest in Josh Freeman    Wed Apr 16, 12:53 PM

The Green Bay Packers would have had interest in New York Giants QB Josh Freeman if QB Matt Flynn did not re-sign with the team.

Footballguys view: Why? Backup quarterbacks need to be ready to start when the opportunity arises. Freeman didn't prepare enough when he was cemented as the starter with the Buccaneers. He certainly didn't look good during his brief time with the Vikings either.

Packers | Matt Flynn re-signs    Tue Apr 15, 02:15 PM

The Green Bay Packers agreed to terms on an undisclosed deal to re-sign QB Matt Flynn Tuesday, April 15, according to a source.

Packers | QB coach hopes Matt Flynn returns    Wed Feb 12, 04:36 PM

Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt said he hopes the team re-signs impending free-agent QB Matt Flynn this offseason. 'The way he fits in the locker room, especially in the quarterback room. The things he does to get [QB Aaron Rodgers] ready to play on Sundays are little things that are hidden sometimes when you're looking at guys, so I'm excited to hopefully get him back in there,' Van Pelt said.

Footballguys view: Flynn tried his hand as a free agent quarterback, but he's just not starter material. He's a great fit as a backup behind Aaron Rodgers.

Packers | Matt Flynn could return    Sat Dec 28, 08:48 PM

The Green Bay Packers may be interested in re-signing QB Matt Flynn this offseason.

Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn took nearly all the snaps in practice Thursday, Dec. 19, while backup QB Scott Tolzien took a handful of snaps. QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) did not take any snaps in the portion of practice open to the media.

Footballguys view: The dropoff from Rodgers to Flynn is pretty severe. Rodgers we feel comfortable flinging in cold on the finals while Flynn is nobody you really want in your starting lineup.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers shows off arm    Wed Dec 18, 11:57 PM

Updating a previous report, Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) had no trouble throwing the ball with his usual velocity Wednesday, Dec. 18. He made several sharp throws during the individual drills that were open to the media. 'He's got that fresh arm,' QB Matt Flynn said. 'He's the same old Aaron. He's the best in the league in my opinion.'

Footballguys view: Great news for the Packers here. Rodgers has not yet been cleared to play but he's getting oh so close to his return. If he's cleared this week then we like him as a top 12 QB against the Steelers.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers takes second-team reps    Wed Dec 18, 01:57 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) took repetitions with the second team Wednesday, Dec. 18, with QB Matt Flynn taking the first-team reps again.

Footballguys view: Slowly but surely, inch by inch, Rodgers creeps towards a potential start. If he starts, aside from sending owners into happy dances, Rodgers is a low-end QB1 because we're not sure how he'll look after the layoff and the Steelers can play defense. Still, unless you have a sure-fire stud ahead of him, this is why you kept him.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said the team will not prepare for either QBs Matt Flynn or Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) early in the week, but instead will prepare for scheme instead.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers taking a risk if he returns    Wed Dec 11, 12:09 PM

Medical experts believe Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers is unlikely to be cleared to play in Week 15 because he is less than six weeks removed from suffering his broken collarbone. Complete bone formation typically takes eight to 10 weeks, meaning he'd be risking more serious injury if he played before the eight weeks. The Packers' medical staff is among the most conservative in the league in returning players to the field too soon. 'We would need different results and different responses to be able to get on the field this week,' Rodgers said.

Packers | Planning on Matt Flynn to start    Mon Dec 9, 04:28 PM

Green Bay Packers head coach Mike McCarthy said the team plans on starting QB Matt Flynn at quarterback Week 15 at this point.

Footballguys view: The Packers are still in the hunt for a playoff spot--on the one hand they need Aaron Rodgers badly. The drop off from Rodgers to anyone else is obvious. On the other hand, there is no sense in rushing him back and risking him getting hurt again. Collarbones are no joke. Flynn isn't great but he was serviceable this past week. It's a much tough challenge against Dallas but that's also not where you want to throw Rodgers in again, is it? In so far as fantasy, Flynn isn't safe to start in any format.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers ruled out    Fri Dec 6, 01:54 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) has been ruled out for the team's Week 14 game.

Packers | Matt Flynn gets first team reps    Thu Dec 5, 01:36 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn got first team reps in practice Thursday, Dec. 5.

Footballguys view: Flynn is likely to start this week for the Packers. We don't have much confidence in his game after he flopped on Thanksgiving. This drops the potential for all targets in the passing game. Reduce expectations for guys like Jordy Nelson, Jarrett Boykin and James Jones.

Packers | Aaron Rodgers likely out    Thu Dec 5, 08:44 AM

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers (collarbone) is unlikely to return for Week 14. QB Matt Flynn is likely to start.

Footballguys view: This isn't a shock, but isn't a good sign for the value of Green Bay's wide receivers. To say Matt Flynn was a train wreck against Detroit on Thanksgiving is to insult train wrecks--he was awful. You can't bench Jordy Nelson but you can downgrade him to a WR2. James Jones and Jarrett Boykin are WR3s or 4s. Eddie Lacy continues to take a hit as well, lowering his value a bit but the saving grace for all of this would be that Atlanta is awful so their value isn't completely dead.

Packers | Matt Flynn to start    Wed Nov 27, 01:36 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn will start the teams Week 13 game against the Detroit Lions, according to head coach Mike McCarthy.

Footballguys view: Well, it's official now. Many speculated that Flynn would be the starter on Thanksgiving against the Lions. He gives the offense more buoyancy than Scott Tolzien does. The Lions have a tough run defense, but they can be beat through the air. Start guys like Jordy Nelson, James Jones and Jarrett Boykin as you normally would.

Packers | Matt Flynn takes first-team reps    Tue Nov 26, 03:53 PM

Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn took the 'starter reps' in practice Tuesday, Nov. 26, but head coach Mike McCarthy has yet to name Flynn the starter in Week 13 against the Detroit Lions. QB Scott Tolzien was pulled in Week 12 in the third quarter against the Minnesota Vikings. 'I'm very comfortable,' said Flynn, who was the Packers' backup from 2008-2011. 'I feel good with the playbook. I feel good with the game plan. I feel ready to go.'

Footballguys view: We feel Flynn is the most likely to start with Aaron Rodgers missing the Thanksgiving game against the Lions. He gives the team the best shot to win, and he gives more buoyancy to the passing offense than Scott Tolzien does.

Packers | Matt Flynn leads team to tie    Sun Nov 24, 08:00 PM

Flynn threw for 218 yards, and helped the team come back from 16-point deficit early in the fourth quarter to tie and force overtime. The teams exchanged field goals in overtime, but the game ended in a 26-26 tie.

Footballguys view: Flynn didn't exactly light up the Vikings, but he was very effective on short throws. If he is the starter on a short week of rest against the woeful Lions pass defense, then Flynn might be worth a spot start for folks who are desperate at quarterback.

Green Bay Packers QB Scott Tolzien was benched in favor of QB Matt Flynn during the third quarter of Week 12's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Tolzien was 7-for-17 with 98 passing yards and a rushing touchdown before being pulled.

Packers | Matt Flynn terms    Thu Nov 14, 11:17 AM

Updating previous reports, Green Bay Packers QB Matt Flynn signed a one-year, prorated deal worth around $294,000.

Footballguys view: Flynn is rumored to have had some arm issues but must be mostly healthy if the Packers want him back. He knows the offense but is no more than a 'break glass in case of emergency' option for the Packers if Scott Tolzien gets hurt (which seems to be a pattern for Packers QBs) or implodes. He doesn't have much value in fantasy either.
