NFL | Coby Fleener still recovering from concussion    Sat Jun 23, 10:28 AM

Free-agent TE Coby Fleener (concussion) said he is still experiencing some concussion symptoms, although they have not had a major impact on his everyday life.

Footballguys view: Earlier this year, Fleener was doing some work with the Saints in camp (light work) where he didn't suffer any setbacks. He hasn't cleared the league's concussion protocol to this point. His agent has heard from multiple teams interested in signing him if he's able to resume his playing career.

NFL | Coby Fleener looking to be medically cleared    Sat May 12, 01:42 PM

Free-agent TE Coby Fleener (concussion) is still trying to get medically cleared after suffering a concussion he suffered in Week 12 of the 2017 season, according to New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton.

Footballguys view: Fleener busted during his time with the Saints, and injuries were a part of that failure. He's looking for a fresh start as soon as he's cleared, and there might be a team or two interested in Fleener's services when healthy.

NFL | Coby Fleener still want to play    Mon May 7, 04:26 PM

Free-agent TE Coby Fleener (Saints) would like to continue his NFL career if he can get back to full health.

Footballguys view: Fleener did not impress during his time with the Saints and never established much chemistry with QB Drew Brees. Some team may give him a shot when he's fully recovered. He is still recovering from a concussion.

Saints | Coby Fleener let go    Mon May 7, 02:47 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener was released Monday, May 7, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall for quite some time. In fact, we're shocked it took this long but Fleener is still recovering from a concussion he sustained last year.

Saints | Coby Fleener not long for New Orleans?    Sun May 6, 12:09 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener's roster spot figures to be in jeopardy after the team added Benjamin Watson in free agency as well as Deon Yelder as an undrafted free agent, according to the Larry Holder of the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

Footballguys view: We're surprised he's lasted this long. Watson was added by the Saints back in March and here we are two months later and Fleener is still on the roster. He's been a bust in New Orleans where he could never make a connection with Drew Brees the way Jimmy Graham used to.

Saints | Coby Fleener a cut candidate    Tue Jan 16, 12:27 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is set to count $8 million against the cap with a $6.3 million salary in 2018, making it highly unlikely he will stay with the team unless he agrees to a pay cut on the five-year, $36 million contract he signed in 2016.

Footballguys view: His contract and his lack of production means that Fleener is gone. If (when?) the Saints choose to release him, they would still be charged $4.8 million in dead money.

Saints | Week 13 injury report for Saints    Fri Dec 1, 05:41 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener (concussion) and S Marcus A. Williams (groin) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 1, and have been ruled out for Week 13. CB P.J. Williams (shoulder) did not practice and is listed as questionable. OT Terron Armstead (shoulder, thigh) and CB Marshon Lattimore (ankle) were limited during practice and are listed as questionable. OT Ryan Ramczyk (elbow), CB Ken Crawley (abdomen), DE Trey Hendrickson (elbow) and OG Larry Warford (shoulder) were limited during practice but are not on the injury report. RB Trey Edmunds (shoulder) fully participated in practice and is not on the injury report.

Footballguys view: Lattimore returning to a limited practice at least leaves the door open for him to play this week. There's a chance that he could be less than his usual self or re-injure the ankle if he plays, so Lattimore being active won't be an automatic bench call for Devin Funchess, who would likely draw the assignment.

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener (concussion) has been ruled out for Week 13. He is considered week-to-week.

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener (concussion) has now suffered five concussions after adding one in Week 12.

  Saints | Coby Fleener becoming a non-factor    Tue Oct 17, 02:33 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener has caught just three passes for 42 yards in his last three games. Furthermore, he was targeted only once in the Saints' 52-38 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 6.

Footballguys view: Fleener has ran 101 routes for the Saints this year, that mark ranks 31st in the NFL for the TE position. He's just not that involved with the team's offense...even though the Saints have a high-powered passing attack with QB Drew Brees. Fantasy owners have much better options than hoping for Fleener to start doing anything.

Saints | Just one touch for Coby Fleener    Sun Sep 24, 04:43 PM

New Orleans TE Coby Fleener managed just one reception for 21 yards on his only target in Week 3 at Carolina.

Footballguys view: Fleener had a good Week 1, salvaged Week 2 with a garbage time score, and was a non-factor in Week 3 as the Saints controlled the game. He'll have a good matchup next week at Miami, but is on the fringe of startable fantasy tight ends.

Saints | Coby Fleener could be more involved    Tue Sep 5, 01:00 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener should see his role 'expand a bit' while Willie Snead serves his three-game suspension, according to ESPN.com's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: That makes sense while Snead is suspended. Fleener was a disappointment in his first year with the Saints in 2016. We don't expect him to light it up, but early in the season (with an expanded role) Fleener gives fantasy owners high-end TE2 potential.

Saints | Coby Fleener more prepared for 2017    Sun May 28, 12:16 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener said already understanding the terminology of the offense will be a big advantage in his second season with the Saints. 'So being able to revamp and feel comfortable going out there and not having to worry about what play call is gonna come up is a huge benefit,' Fleener said.

Footballguys view: Fleener was a disappointment in his first year with the Saints. He did finish with 50 receptions for the fourth year in a row, but his lack of touchdowns (3) kept him at the TE2 levels for fantasy owners. If he's more comfortable this year, Fleener could perform like a low-end TE1 with upside. His ADP is low right now at TE17 (13.11) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | New Orleans optimistic about Coby Fleener    Fri Feb 10, 04:42 PM

The New Orleans Saints believe TE Coby Fleener will be a bigger part of the offense in 2017 because he will be more comfortable with the offensive scheme and will continue to build a chemistry with QB Drew Brees.

Footballguys view: We'll believe it when we see it. Fleener was not a fit for the Saints offense in 2016, but he'll get another chance to prove himself. Fantasy owners should look at Fleener like a TE2 with potential.

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener managed six receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown in the Week 6 game against the Carolina Panthers. He was targeted seven times.

Footballguys view: Fleener also had a rushing score in a clear sign that the Saints are putting an emphasis on their big free agent pickup. He's a boom/bust TE option with the ability to put a top three score at the position in any given week, which makes tolerating his low points worth it at this point.

Saints | Coby Fleener figuring out offense    Sat Oct 8, 12:20 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener's catch rate has climbed from 25 percent in the first two games to 62 percent in the last two games, and tight ends coach Dan Campbell said Fleener is starting to understand what QB Drew Brees is looking for.

Footballguys view: Early in the season, Fleener didn't mesh well in the Saints offense. He's been coming around as of late, and that should continue as the season rolls on. After the Saints bye in Week 5, Fleener should be locked in as a TE1 or high-end TE2 (at least) each week.

Saints | Drew Brees still confident in Coby Fleener    Fri Sep 23, 01:34 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is off to a disappointing start in his new home and still building a rapport with QB Drew Brees. However, Brees believes as the two players begin to get more comfortable with each other and the team learns what Fleener does best versus man and zone coverage, the results will come.

Footballguys view: Fleener has been getting open and Brees has been trying to find him, but the connection is ragged. The upside is very high if these two can click, so perhaps it's worth carrying Fleener in deeper leagues to see what happens, but his matchups the first two weeks were excellent.

Saints | Coby Fleener off to slow start    Wed Sep 21, 12:40 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener caught two passes for 29 yards on eight targets in Week 2, giving him three catches for 35 yards through two games. He blamed himself in post-game comments, saying he made 'three or four' mistakes and singling out a dropped pass on the team's opening drive.

Footballguys view: Listening to the preseason drum beats about Fleener, these struggles are not a surprise. Fleener doesn't know the offense, and he clearly doesn't have strong chemistry with QB Drew Brees. It's time for fantasy owners to find other options out there (Eric Ebron, Jesse James, Trey Burton) depending on the depth of your league.

Saints | Coby Fleener may see more time    Sat Sep 17, 07:29 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is expected to receive more snaps in Week 2 because of the injury to TE Josh Hill (ankle). Fleener may be asked to block more during the game.

Footballguys view: Fleener is not yet up to speed in the Saints offense. However, he's an athletic TE who can get open against LBs over the middle. We consider him a TE2 with upside in Week 2 against the Giants.

Saints | Coby Fleener nearly invisible    Sun Sep 11, 10:27 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener did not get in on the track meet in Week 1 against the Oakland Raiders, posting just one reception for six yards on four targets.

Footballguys view: Fleener was the subject of many reports that put him on a different page than the Drew Brees this summer and not gaining trust. The Week 1 result bore that out. Don't feel attached to him, although he could bounce back against the Giants defense that is very soft against tight ends, including giving up nine catches to Jason Witten today.

Saints | Coby Fleener struggling with playbook    Sun Sep 4, 05:57 PM

New Orleans TE Coby Fleener reportedly admitted recently he is still adjusting to his new playbook, according to ESPN's Mike Triplett.

Footballguys view: Sean Payton has said that Fleener was a 'work in progress' during camp. On paper, he looks like a great fit for the Saints offense. The reality is that he may not hit his stride as a fantasy asset until he's more well versed in the offense. We believe he's a TE1, but he may perform like a low-end one while he gets up to speed.

Saints | Coby Fleener not reliable enough    Fri Aug 26, 10:16 AM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener hasn't been reliable enough catching passes and isn't on the same page with QB Drew Brees on some routes, according to beat writer Larry Holder. TE Josh Hill has been more involved in the passing game in recent practices.

Footballguys view: Fleener has been the subject of many reports of up and down play like this one. He and Drew Brees are not clicking, and there are signs that he won't be as involved as his huge contract would suggest, at least at first. Fleener is being drafted near his ceiling as TE6 or TE7 off of the board, which appears to be too bold in light of these reports.

Saints | Coby Fleener still work in progress    Tue Aug 23, 10:53 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener is still getting situation in his team's offense, and he continues to make adjustments. 'I'd say it's an ongoing progression,' head coach Sean Payton said Monday, Aug. 22. 'I think, man, there's some plays that are real good, and then there's some plays where we've got to be a little bit more detailed and that's something that I know he's got to work on.'

Footballguys view: That's not what you want to hear about a player going off in the top 5 of his position. Right now, Fleener is getting drafted at TE5 (6.05) in 12-team PPR leagues. We'll see how he does this week in the dress rehearsal for the regular season. On paper, Fleener could be quite the valuable fantasy asset with the Saints.

Saints | Coby Fleener works with starters    Wed Aug 17, 07:37 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener lined up with the first-team offense at practice Wednesday, August 17.

Footballguys view: Fleener is an interesting TE to consider for your fantasy team this year. The Saints should use him early and often, and he should become a favorite target of QB Drew Brees. If he caught 70 passes this year and finished as a top-5 fantasy TE we wouldn't be surprised. Fleener has a current ADP of TE5 (6.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Coby Fleener building chemistry with QB    Mon Aug 1, 02:40 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener said he has been working on building a chemistry with QB Drew Brees during the early part of training camp. Brees said he believes Fleener could catch a lot of passes in 2016 because he will have favorable matchups.

Footballguys view: Message! Fantasy owners are going to want Fleener at the right value this year. The Saints TE position has been one of the most productive each season. Whether it's Jimmy Graham or Ben Watson, TE1 value is certainly there. His current ADP is TE6 (7.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Coby Fleener could be second option    Wed Jul 13, 01:32 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener could be the second option in the passing game behind WR Brandin Cooks.

Footballguys view: We'd agree with that statement...on paper. With Ben Watson (Ravens) gone, the Saints need Fleener to be their new version of Jimmy Graham. The opportunity is there for him to be quite the valuable fantasy asset in 2016. Don't be surprised if Fleener finishes the year with career-best numbers.

Saints | Drew Brees likes Coby Fleener    Sat Jun 18, 03:47 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener has an uncanny ability to separate and get open, according to QB Drew Brees. 'There's always a place to throw the ball where he can get it,' Brees said. Fleener was targeted eight times during 7-on-7 drills and 11-on-11 drills this week -- the same number of targets as WRs Brandin Cooks and Willie Snead.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should love Fleener if he can stay healthy and play up to his potential. With Ben Watson moving on to the Ravens in free agency, the Saints went out to add Fleener. Brees loves to involve the TE in the passing game, and this makes Fleener a low-end TE1 with upside in 2016. His current ADP is TE7 (7.09) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Saints | Coby Fleener could help in red zone    Mon May 30, 03:58 PM

New Orleans Saints TE Coby Fleener will be used as a receiver first and will hopefully help in third-down and red-zone situations, according to head coach Sean Payton, much like the way Seattle Seahawks TE Jimmy Graham was used when he played for the Saints.

Footballguys view: We're excited about Fleener this year with the Saints. Ben Watson finished as the 7th-best fantasy TE last year, but now he's moved on to the Ravens in free agency and Fleener comes over from the Colts to take his spot. The potential has always been there with Fleener, and this season we may see him play up to that potential. His current ADP is TE9 (8.04) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Free-agent TE Coby Fleener (Colts) agreed to sign a five-year deal worth roughly $36 million with the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, March 9, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Saints had to do something with Ben Watson signing with the Ravens. Fleener gets out of the TEBC with Dwayne Allen, and he should be the lead player at the position if he can beat out Josh Hill for the starting job with the Saints. In that offense, Fleener would have TE2 with upside value if he can stay healthy.
