Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick named the starting quarterback    Tue Jun 17, 01:51 PM

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien named QB Ryan Fitzpatrick as the team's starting quarterback Tuesday, June 17.

Footballguys view: Case Keenum could be an option if Fitzpatrick falters early, as could fourth round pick Tom Savage. Sadly, Fitzpatrick being on the field is probably the best case for Texans skill players this year.

Texans | Still no official starting quarterback    Fri Jun 13, 03:00 PM

The Houston Texans finished organized team activities Friday, June 13, without a starting quarterback. QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and rookie Tom Savage are competing for three roster spots. Fitzpatrick, who is expected to start Week 1, had a 'decent offseason' and has done well picking up a new offense, according to head coach Bill O'Brien. Savage hasn't been ruled out for the No. 2 position.

Footballguys view: They have to find a good quarterback first. Their collection of quarterbacks is not impressive, and that's why both Andre Johnson and DeAndre Hopkins are frustrated this offseason. Expect a lot of Arian Foster this year due to the poor quarterback collection.

Texans | Case Keenmum, T.J. Yates could be on bubble    Mon Jun 9, 02:05 PM

The Houston Texans likely would release QB Case Keenum or QB T.J. Yates if they decide to take only three quarterbacks to training camp, because QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tom Savage appear to be locks for the roster.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Keenum and Yates have failed to impress during their time with the Texans. We could see Keenum stick around as a backup option for Houston. He started out strong last year with a 350-yard, three touchdown game against the Colts but his season quickly fizzled after that.

Texans | Quarterback competition update     Thu Jun 5, 10:19 PM

Updating a previous report, Houston Texans QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and Tom Savage are progressing at the same rate, head coach Bill O'Brien said Thursday, June 5, and the team's starter remains undetermined.

Footballguys view: Either that's great news for Savage or horrendous news for everyone else. We're feeling optimistic tonight so let's say "good news" and assume Savage is progressing nicely. This isn't a great bunch of quarterbacks to choose from and it would shock nobody if Savage found his way into the lineup this season. How this shakes out will have big consequences for the entire Houston offense and all their fantasy prospects.

Texans | QB competition wide open    Tue May 27, 05:37 PM

Houston Texans head coach Bill O'Brien is saying that right now, after the first day of organized team activities Tuesday, May 27, the quarterback competition is wide open between QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick, Case Keenum, T.J. Yates and Tom Savage. The team will look to make sure all of the quarterback repetitions are equal for all four quarterbacks, but they'll look to narrow the focus as the season approaches.

Footballguys view: We'll have a better idea of how things are working out when training camp is here. Right now, Ryan Fitzpatrick has to be considered the frontrunner at the position. He's got better intelligence and more experience than any of the other quarterbacks on the roster. The main competition for Fitzpatrick could be the rookie Savage. He's got a strong arm, but his accuracy and decision making needs a ton of work.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick No. 1 QB for now    Mon Apr 7, 02:48 PM

Houston Texans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick would be the team's starting quarterback if the regular season started today.

Footballguys view: That won't last for long. The Texans are going to select a quarterback at some time in the first two rounds of the draft.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick signing    Thu Mar 20, 06:29 PM

The Houston Texans are signing free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Titans) to an undisclosed two-year deal Thursday, March 20, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Well, one hopes this isn't Bill O'Brien's great plan because we've seen Fitz and he's not a starting quarterback. This may be a sign Matt Schaub is being moved though, as a veteran backup would be a good thing in that case. Then again, we're not sure Fitzpatrick is a good backup either.

Texans | Ryan Fitzpatrick to visit    Thu Mar 20, 03:59 PM

The Houston Texans will visit with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Titans) Thursday, March 20.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick couldn't a stick in Tennessee, odds are he won't be a vast improvement in Houston--unless as we've heard, Schaub will be moved. In which case a veteran backup is useful.

Bengals | Could look at Ryan Fitzpatrick    Wed Mar 19, 09:00 PM

Browns | Not interested in Ryan Fitzpatrick    Sat Mar 15, 01:13 PM

The Cleveland Browns are not interested in free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (Titans).

Footballguys view: The Browns are likely to add a veteran and a rookie to the mix at some point this offseason. Brian Hoyer is still on the roster, but Jason Campbell and Brandon Weeden were removed earlier this week.

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick released    Fri Mar 14, 04:39 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said he's been officially released Friday, March 14.

Footballguys view: The writing was on the wall when the Titans signed Charlie Whitehurst. He follows Ken Whisenhunt over from San Diego, and Whitehurst should be the primary backup behind Jake Locker.

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick expected to be released    Fri Mar 14, 02:56 PM

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick likely to be released    Thu Mar 13, 05:29 PM

The Tennessee Titans are expected to release QB Ryan Fitzpatrick following the finalization of signing QB Charlie Whitehurst.

Footballguys view: With Whitehurst coming on, there's no need to have a second guy to stand around. Whitehurst isn't a ton better if Locker goes down, but clearly he looks better than Fitzpatrick.

Titans | Expect Jake Locker to have competition    Mon Feb 24, 02:43 AM

Although the Tennessee Titans front office supported QB Jake Locker, the team will likely bring in some competition for him in the offseason. Titans brass expect the top quarterbacks to be off the board by the 11th pick, but potential options to provide some younger competition for Locker that could be had after the first round include Derek Carr, Aaron Murray, Jimmy Garoppolo, and Zach Mettenberger. The Titans also have QB Ryan Fitzpatrick under contract and the team feels comfortable with him.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. The Titans have to figure out if Locker is the franchise quarterback or not. They had better set themselves up with a new plan just in case Locker is hurt by the injuries and inconsistencies that have plagued his pro career.

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick won't wear glove    Sat Dec 7, 10:14 AM

Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said he will not wear a glove in the team's Week 14 game. "I messed around with it a little bit and just didn't like it. I don't feel the need for me, but other guys like it," Fitzpatrick said. "Usually you have the hand warmer (around the waist) with the stuff in there that keeps it warmer or warm enough. Sometimes you end up making the huddle a little extra tighter just so everybody can get that body warmth in there."

Footballguys view: Good luck with that. Denver has been frozen this week with Arctic temperatures near zero degrees. However, it's going to warm up and be a balmy 20 degrees at kickoff on Sunday.

Titans | John Skelton No. 3    Wed Nov 20, 01:08 PM

Tennessee Titans QB John Skelton will serve as the team's No. 3 quarterback behind QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Rusty Smith. Skelton isn't expected to be active in Week 12 against the Oakland Raiders. 'We thought we had a need just because of the way quarterbacks get hurt,' head coach Mike Munchak said. 'Rusty will go in if anything happens to Fitz, but this allows us to have somebody else here learning our offense in case we have another injury.' The Titans would likely run a wildcat offense with RBs Chris Johnson and Shonn Greene taking snaps if both Fitzpatrick and Smith are injured.

Titans | Hope players rally around Ryan Fitzpatrick    Mon Nov 11, 09:18 PM

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said Monday, Nov. 11, he is hopeful the players will rally around QB Ryan Fitzpatrick, who will take over as the starting quarterback again with QB Jake Locker (foot) done for the season. QB Rusty Smith will serve as the backup, although Munchak did not rule out signing another quarterback.

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick to start in Week 11    Sun Nov 10, 06:05 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to take over as the team's starting signal caller for the remainder of the season, as sources believe QB Jake Locker (foot) suffered a season-ending foot injury in Week 10 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick was outstanding in relief of Locker from a fantasy standpoint today. It was against the Jacksonville defense, but the Titans have the Jaguars again in week 16, in addition to two matchups against the Colts, one against Oakland, and one more from Denver.

Titans | Haven't made decision on QB    Fri Oct 18, 06:12 PM

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said the team hasn't decided on a starting quarterback in Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers between QBs Jake Locker (hip, knee) and Ryan Fitzpatrick. 'We haven't decided yet. We're not really leaning any way,' Munchak said. 'Jake is doing well. He did everything today we wanted him to do. Now, we'll spend some time with him and talk as an offense and decide what is the best thing to do for Sunday.' General manager Ruston Webster said he's optimistic that Locker can play Sunday.

Footballguys view: With the Titans bye coming up next week, they should err on the side of sitting Locker, but they are also embroiled in what could be a close AFC South race with the Colts flawed and the Texans in mid-collapse.

Titans | Jake Locker not ruled out    Fri Oct 18, 01:43 PM

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak is not ruling out QB Jake Locker (knee, hip) for Week 7 against the San Francisco 49ers, but his chances still look unlikely with the team's bye week in Week 8. Locker increased his activities in practice Thursday, Oct. 17, but continued to wear a brace on his right knee and walk with a limp. 'He can play. It is just a matter of ... is he quite ready? There is no doubt the more you rest, the more you take off, the stronger your (knee) is going to feel. But it doesn't mean you can't play in the meantime,' Munchak said. 'He came out and looked better today. ... We'll consider anything, really. We'll wait until tomorrow. It is kind of wait and see. We don't want to ever say he can't do anything.' Teammates expect QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to make the start this weekend.

Footballguys view: Locker being back will breathe life into the deep passing game, and therefor open up things for the running game, just as the Titans are getting to the easier part of their schedule. Don't wait to add him in very deep, QB flex, and 2QB leagues.

Titans | Jake Locker not expected to play    Wed Oct 16, 05:39 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (hip, knee) isn't expected to play in Week 7 despite returning to limited practice Wednesday, Oct. 16. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is expected to make his third straight start. Locker took part in some quarterback drills, seven-on-seven workouts and took a few snaps. Head coach Mike Munchak said Locker's knee injury is more serious than his hip at this time.

Footballguys view: No shocking news here. Locker is still a few weeks away from returning to the lineup. Some think the best case scenario is that he returns after the Titans Week 8 bye.

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick failing deep    Mon Oct 7, 10:08 AM

Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is 0-for-8 with an interception on passes of 15 yards or more. That is the most attempts of such without a completion in the league.

Footballguys view: Yep, sounds about right. Fitzpatrick just isn't a good deep ball thrower. The Titans will have to adjust their offense to more underneath routes while Jake Locker is out.

Titans | Rusty Smith to be promoted to active roster    Wed Oct 2, 06:52 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Rusty Smith will be promoted from the practice squad to serve as the backup to QB Ryan Fitzpatrick with QB Jake Locker (hip, knee) out. Locker doesn't have a timetable for when he'll return to action, and he was walking with a limp and a sleeve on his injured leg Wednesday, Oct. 2.

Footballguys view: The Titans need to do something now that Locker is going to miss some time with a hip/knee injury. Smith will be backing up veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Titans | Jake Locker avoids serious injury    Tue Oct 1, 02:50 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (hip) avoided serious injury to his hip, only suffering a sprain. Locker will not require surgery, and is expected to only miss a few weeks.

Footballguys view: Good news for Locker and the Titans here. Locker was just starting to come into his own and showed development this season. He's a football junkie who loves the game and works hard at his craft. Throw out a buy low offer for Locker in dynasty leagues.

Titans | Jake Locker carted off    Sun Sep 29, 05:52 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Jake Locker (leg) left the game against the New York Jets in the third quarter due to an apparent leg injury. He was carted off after suffering some sort of a lower body injury. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick replaced him.

Footballguys view: Locker's right leg got twisted after he planted as he was going down, and he grabbed at the back of the leg as he went to the ground. This is a bit tragic as Locker's game was really coming together over the last game plus. The Titans have Kansas City coming to town next week, but they might have the propsect of Ryan Fitzpatrick starting for them for a lot longer than just that game.

Titans | Coach sets QB depth chart    Thu Jun 13, 02:00 PM

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said QB Jake Locker is his quarterback and QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is strictly the backup and knows his role on the team.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. It's a make or break season for Locker in 2013. He has to prove that he can be consistent enough to be relied on as a starter. Locker also has to stay healthy so that he can play up to the potential franchise QB level the team saw in him when they selected him in the first-round of the 2011 NFL draft.

Titans | Ryan Fitzpatrick embracing backup role    Mon Mar 25, 10:29 PM

Tennessee Titans QB Ryan Fitzpatrick said he is embracing the backup role with the team. 'I wanted to find a nice role for me to come in and more than likely help a young guy,' Fitzpatrick said. 'I thought that would be something that was important to look for and for me a great opportunity to come in. For me, (it's) a great opportunity to come in and help Jake. I don't know Jake at all, but I want to be there for him and be ready to play if anything happens.'

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick has bounced around the league and he knows the deal. At this time he's not seen as a starter so he must serve as a veteran backup and wait for an opportunity. Locker has durability issues so there's a good chance Fitzpatrick will see a handful of starts this year.

Titans | Jake Locker's job safe     Wed Mar 20, 09:35 AM

Tennessee Titans head coach Mike Munchak said QB Jake Locker will enter 2013 as the starting quarterback, even after the addition of QB Ryan Fitzpatrick. Munchak wants Fitzpatrick to push Locker, but believes the competition will make Locker a better player. 'I think (Fitzpatrick) understands his role,' Muchak said. 'It's Jake's team. It's Jake's time. Jake's going to be our guy. We made that decision last year after training camp. Ryan has been in this situation before ... He's going to compete with (Locker) and I think he'll help him a lot throughout the week. It will be another great mentor for him. And we feel he can win if he has to play. That's how we felt with Matt Hasselbeck also.'

Footballguys view: The team hopes Locker can be a true franchise QB. Injuries and inconsistencies have been a problem for Locker during his young pro career. We'll see if he can get on track this year. Many think this is a make or break season for Locker.

Bills | Will have competition at QB    Fri Feb 15, 01:05 PM

Buffalo Bills head coach Doug Marrone said QBs Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tarvaris Jackson will compete for the starting quarterback position during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: The choice between Fitzpatrick and Jackson is like the choice between airline food and hospital food. Both would get you by, but neither is an exciting option. Don't be surprised if the Bills add a QB to the mix via the 2013 NFL Draft.

Bills | May ask Ryan Fitzpatrick to restructure deal    Wed Feb 13, 04:58 PM

The Buffalo Bills may ask QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to restructure his contract in order to reduce his $10.45 million salary cap figure for next season. If the team decides to release Fitzpatrick before he is to receive his $3 million roster bonus, he would still count $10 million against the salary cap because of bonus money that has already been paid to him.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick just isn't worth starter money, or really a starter job. He gets the most out of his very limited tools, but mistakes and inability to throw deep with accuracy has made Fitzpatrick a very beatable quarterback.

Bills | Teammate thinks competition would help Ryan Fitzpatrick    Mon Feb 4, 05:05 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson said he believes competition at the quarterback position would do nothing but help QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Footballguys view: The Bills are looking for a true franchise QB and until they find one they'll stick with Fitzpatrick as a starting option. We think they'll be looking to select a QB with a premium pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. Guys like Ryan Nassib (Syracuse), Matt Barkley (USC), or Mike Glennon (North Carolina State) could be options for them in the first-round.

Bills | Stevie Johnson wants to see Ryan Fitzpatrick pushed    Tue Jan 22, 01:27 PM

Buffalo Bills WR Stevie Johnson wants to see the team bring in another quarterback to give QB Ryan Fitzpatrick some serious competition for the starting job. 'Because competition brings out the best in us,' Johnson said. 'If we went out and got another quarterback, who knows what'll happen? Fitz may still win, or the other guy my win. Let it happen like that.' However, Johnson is still confident the team can win with Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Fitzpatrick was ranked 32nd out of 33 quarterbacks this year with a 27.5 completion percentage on passes that traveled at least 20 yards.

Footballguys view: That could certainly happen this year. The Bills are rumored to be interested in QB Ryan Nassib (Syracuse) in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Bills | Mike Glennon could be an option    Wed Dec 26, 12:38 PM

The Buffalo Bills could decide to take North Carolina State QB Mike Glennon in the first round of next year's NFL Draft. Glennon has been personally scouted by general manager Buddy Nix, and the Bills are expected to add a quarterback through the draft or free agency, even if they hang on to QB Ryan Fitzpatrick.

Footballguys view: Glennon is currently seen as a second-round pick. This season, Glennon led the ACC in passing yards per game (304.0). Glennon also became the first NC State QB to throw for 30 or more touchdowns in two different seasons. He was highly recruited out of high school but began his collegiate career as a backup behind current Seahawks starting QB Russell Wilson. Glennon has ideal size for the NFL but needs to work on his footwork in order to improve his accuracy and escapability.

Bills | Ryan Fitzpatrick likely done     Mon Dec 24, 09:49 AM

Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is unlikely to return to the team in 2013. Fitzpatrick has received $21 million of the six-year, $62 million contract he signed in October 2011, and it will not cost the Bills any more to cut him than to keep him on the team. Fitzpatrick is due a $3 million roster bonus in March. If he gets cut before that bonus is paid, then he will count $10 million against the team's salary cap in 2013. If Fitzpatrick is on the roster, his cap number for 2013 will be $10.45 million. Fitzpatrick's base salaries going forward are $4.25 million in 2013, $4.35 million in 2014, $7.2 million in 2015, $8.75 million in 2016 and $9.45 million in 2017.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. The Bills have been featuring (and paying) a QB who has backup level talent. Fitzpatrick is too often careless with the football and it has cost the team dearly. Over the last two years only Jets QB Mark Sanchez has more turnovers than Fitzpatrick. The Bills could decide to draft a QB like Geno Smith (West Virginia) or Matt Barkley (USC) in the first-round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Bills | Could save space if Ryan Fitzpatrick released     Sat Dec 22, 01:48 PM

The Buffalo Bills could save $4.45 million in salary cap space if they decide to release QB Ryan Fitzpatrick before the second day of the 2013 NFL year which comes in March. The team is scheduled to pay a $3 million roster bonus to Ryan Fitzpatrick on that date and his salary cap number would jump to $10.45 million if he is paid the bonus.

Footballguys view: It's clear the team needs an upgrade at the QB position. Fitzpatrick is a backup caliber QB who has had 14 multi-interception days in the last 37 games. In the first-round of the 2013 NFL Draft the Bills may consider a QB like Matt Barkley (USC).

Buffalo Bills general manager Buddy Nix backed off some of his earlier comments saying the team would focus on drafting a quarterback of the future, suggesting that QB Ryan Fitzpatrick wasn't their man. Nix said previously that the team would draft another quarterback in the first round of next year's draft. 'That's not necessarily true. I mean, we're going to always stay with the integrity of the (draft) board. But we're going to try to find a quarterback. Buffalo Bills QB Ryan Fitzpatrick went 9-for-17 for 112 yards and two touchdowns against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13. He also rushed for 18 yards and one touchdown on five carries in the game.

Footballguys view: Fitzpatrick hooked up on TJ Graham on an early deep ball and finished the drive with a QB sneak, but otherwise the offensive heavy lifting was done by the running backs. He can be dropped as long as you have a viable backup quarterback.
