Buccaneers | Darren Fells headed to Tampa    Wed Nov 10, 09:36 AM

Free-agent TE Darren Fells (Lions) will sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' practice squad Wednesday, Nov. 10, with plans to be promoted to the active roster for Week 10.

Footballguys view: Fells is a big-bodied veteran tight end who is primarily a blocker. With Rob Gronkowski experiencing back spasms, the Buccaneers had to make a move. If he plays, Fells isn't much of a fantasy factor with his blocking role.

Lions | Darren Fells knows his role    Fri Jul 9, 10:45 PM

Detroit Lions TE Darren Fells said he expects to serve primarily as a blocker to complement TE T.J. Hockenson. 'Had the conversation with him already, that if we're both in there, I'll be like an extra lineman for him, to give him time to get open, so he can bump that touchdown total up to 12,' Fells said.

Footballguys view: Fells is a seasoned veteran who is a big-bodied blocker. He's also a fine red zone threat because of his size. Fells had 11 touchdown catches over the last two seasons with the Texans. He might snare a couple this season, but his role will be exactly what he described it to be - a complementary player to Hockenson.

Lions | Darren Fells set to join Detroit    Wed May 5, 02:30 PM

Free-agent TE Darren Fells (Texans) reportedly agreed to terms on an undisclosed contract with the Detroit Lions on Wednesday, May 5.

Footballguys view: With Josh Hill retiring, the Lions needed to add more depth to the tight end room. Fells is a huge target and can be a presence in the red zone. His size also makes him a fine blocker when tasked with that duty. Fells should work in as the primary backup to starter T.J. Hockenson in 2021.

Texans | Darren Fells a trusted red-zone option    Sat Jun 6, 05:54 PM

Houston Texans TE Darren Fells led the team with nine red-zone receptions and seven touchdowns in 2019. His 11 red-zone targets shared the team lead with WR DeAndre Hopkins.

Footballguys view: With Hopkins traded way, Fells might get a little more work in the red zone. However, his seven touchdowns are going to be tough to duplicate. Instead it might be better to project him for around 4-5 touchdowns in 2020.

Texans | Darren Fells could return    Sun Jan 26, 02:02 PM

Houston Texans impending free-agent TE Darren Fells is a player the Texans will try to re-sign this offseason, but he probably will receive interest from multiple teams in free agency.

Footballguys view: Fells could have a larger market than some think. However, the Texans have a good group of tight ends with guys still in place like Jordan Thomas and Jordan Akins. They might lose Fells but still be more than okay at tight end because of those two.

Texans | Houston blows big lead, falls in Kansas City    Sun Jan 12, 06:31 PM

Houston Texans QB Deshaun Watson completed 31-of-52 passes for 388 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in Sunday's 51-31 AFC Divisional Round playoff game loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, as the team blew a 24-0 lead. RB Carlos Hyde rushed 13 times for 44 yards, while Watson also added 37 yards and a score. WR DeAndre Hopkins ended up with nine grabs for 118 yards on a game-high 14 targets. WR Will Fuller was a nice secondary option with 89 yards on five catches, while WR Kenny Stills posted three receptions for 80 yards and a touchdown. TE Darren Fells also had three catches for 22 yards and a touchdown on seven targets. RB Duke Johnson also chipped in with 11 rushing yards and five grabs for 23 yards. CB Lonnie Johnson also had a blocked kick return for touchdown in the first quarter while totaling four solo tackles.

Footballguys view: Watson was gifted a 24-0 lead but then turned into a deer in the headlights like his teammates as the game quickly slipped away. The stats were great in a perfect fantasy football game script, but this game will be remembered as an all-time collapse. The Texans are unlikely to make any majors this offseason and will be without their first and third round picks in the draft.

Texans | Houston's injury report for Week 16    Thu Dec 19, 04:37 PM

Houston Texans LB Jake Martin (knee) and LB Benardrick McKinney (concussion) did not practice all week and have been ruled out for Week 16 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. S Jahleel Addae (Achilles), WR Will Fuller (hamstring), RB Carlos Hyde (ankle, non-injury), RB Taiwan Jones (hamstring) and LB Brennan Scarlett (Achilles, shoulder) were limited in practice Thursday, Dec. 19, and are listed as questionable. TE Darren Fells (hand) and WR DeAndre Hopkins (illness) practiced in full Thursday and have been removed from the injury report.

Footballguys view: Martin has been adding some pass rush punch lately and will be missed. Fuller's hamstring is still affecting him to some extent, but the Bucs matchup is compelling enough to make him a WR3/Flex this week as long as he's active Saturday.

Texans | Darren Fells visiting HOU    Mon Mar 18, 09:42 AM

Free-agent TE Darren Fells (Browns) is visiting the Houston Texans Monday, March 18.

Footballguys view: The Texans are clearly looking for some help at the tight end position. We'll see if they add Fells or some other tight end through free agency or the draft.

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron will not be released as he enters the 2018 season under his fifth-year option. Ebron will be guaranteed $8.25 million when the new league year begins. The inconsistent tight end's presence will limit playing time for fellow TEs Darren Fells and Michael Roberts.

Footballguys view: Ebron has yet to fully play up to his potential as a pro. The Lions will give him one more go and see if he can finally flourish. Fantasy owners know after three seasons as a TE2 what to expect from Ebron.

Lions | More two tight end sets for Detroit?    Sat Jul 8, 08:39 PM

Detroit Lions TE Darren Fells' ability to serve as a good blocker on the edge could be of even greater importance to the Lions until OT Taylor Decker can return from a torn labrum, according to DetroitLions.com's Tim Twentyman.

Footballguys view: Fourth-round pick Michael Roberts is also a good two-way tight end who could help as a blocker while Decker is out. Decker is an a good run blocker, so his loss hurts Ameer Abdullah and the running game. If a tight end is kept in more as a blocker, then there will either be fewer three-wide sets, hurting whoever wins the slot receiver job, or fewer two tight end sets, hurting Eric Ebron's increased opportunity.

Lions | Darren Fells could be used more    Thu Jul 6, 09:41 AM

Detroit Lions TE Darren Fells could be utilized more in two tight-end sets and see his targets increase in 2017. Fells could be utilized as a blocker more after the injury to OT Taylor Decker (shoulder) as well.

Footballguys view: Not only will he see more time as a blocker, he'll still be behind Eric Ebron as the chief tight end receiving option. So we aren't expecting much from him in terms of production. The Lions selected another tight end during the 2017 NFL Draft, a beast by the name of Mike Roberts. Roberts was a machine in the end zone during college, but we don't expect a ton from a rookie tight end. Ebron is still your choice, and he's a potential top ten tight end who is going off the board as the 14th tight end in early drafts.

Lions | Eric Ebron expecting big things    Fri Jun 23, 12:09 AM

Detroit Lions TE Eric Ebron said he believes the addition of TE Darren Fells will allow him to play to his strengths. 'I think it's going to play a significant role for me to allow me to do the things that I'm best at,' Ebron said.

Footballguys view: Ebron will be the primary receiving threat for the Lions at the tight end position. Fuller is a blocker and won't contribute much as a receiver. In the fourth round of the 2017 NFL draft, the Lions selected another big-bodied tight end in Mike Roberts. In college at Toledo he was a noted touchdown hog, but rookie tight ends usually struggle their first season or two. Ebron should get over 100 targets this year and has the upside to be a top-10 fantasy tight end in 2017. He's going off the board at TE14 (12.08) right now in 12-team PPR leagues.

Lions | Darren Fells to have bigger role?    Sat Apr 8, 12:13 AM

Detroit Lions TE Darren Fells will have his role expanded, according to general manager Bob Quinn. 'He's a big, primarily blocking tight end, but we think we can utilize him in other areas as well because he's a really athletic guy for being so big,' Quinn said.

Footballguys view: We'd be shocked to see Fells catch more than 15 or so passes in 2017. Eric Ebron is their primary receiving tight end, and Fells will continue to work mostly as a blocker. Even if his role is expanded, Fells won't do enough to be fantasy relevant.
