The Denver Broncos waived RB Mario Fannin and placed S Blake Gideon on the reserve-retired list.
| Footballguys view: Fannin has been on Injured Reserve over the last two years and may never get his speed back. He's big (220 pounds) and ran the second fastest 40-yard dash for RBs at the 2011 Scouting Combine (4.38). Fannin may have a difficult time catching on with another team. The Lions could have interest as former Broncos GM Brian Xanders now works in the front office in Detroit. |

Denver Broncos RBs Lance Ball, Jeremiah Johnson, Mario Fannin and C.J. Anderson are expected to compete for the No. 4 running back job during offseason workouts and training camp.
| Footballguys view: Ball is the best all-purpose RB in this group. He's good on special teams as well. Johnson is quick and explosive but has failed to impress enough to get on the field. Fannin is big (224 pounds) and fast (4.38 40-yard dash) but hasn't stayed healthy during his pro career after going undrafted out of Auburn in 2011. Anderson was a UDFA for the Broncos this year and has a powerful lower body and good vision. |

Denver Broncos RB Mario Fannin (Achilles') suffered a torn Achilles' tendon during a scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 4, and is expected to miss the entire 2012 season.
| Footballguys view: This could be it for Fannin in the pros. A knee injury cut short his training camp last year as he set out his entire rookie season on Injured Reserve. Coming back from an Achilles' injury will be incredibly difficult for the undrafted free agent out of Auburn. |

The Denver Broncos have high hopes for RB Mario Fannin this offseason and could give him a significant role in the offense this season if he does well during training camp.
| Footballguys view: Our very own Cecil Lammey had good things to say about Fannin during Broncos training camp last summer. Fannin was the second fastest RB at the Combine in 2011 but suffered a knee injury in training camp that cut his rookie season short. He reminds us a lot of his former college teammate Ben Tate (Texans). |

| Footballguys view: Fannin looked good during training camp before he got hurt. He's was very fast and effective as a straight line runner and receiver out of the backfield. The team really liked him so we'll see if how he recovers next season. |

The Denver Broncos have agreed to terms with undrafted free-agent RB Mario Fannin (Auburn).
| Footballguys view: No surprise here. Fannin was out at Dove Valley for a pre-draft workout and many felt he would end up in Denver when he went undrafted. Fannin is a big back who relishes contact. He has the leg drive to pick up yards after contact and could make the team because of his ability as a short-yardage runner. |
