Buccaneers | Andre Ellington released    Sat Aug 31, 04:50 PM

Tampa Bay Buccaneers RB Andre Ellington was released Saturday, Aug. 31.

Footballguys view: Ellington had experience under Bruce Arians from their days in Arizona, but that wasn't enough for him to make the 53-man roster. The Bucs have seen Dare Ogunbowale emerge in that change-of-pace role, and Ogunbowale is an explosive player we're watching closely in deep dynasty formats.

Buccaneers | Tampa Bay signs Andre Ellington    Tue Feb 19, 04:12 PM

Free-agent RB Andre Ellington (Texans) was signed to an undisclosed deal by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Tuesday, Feb. 19. Ellington played for Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians when they were with the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: Ellington's best season as a pro came in 2014 under Arians. That year for the Cardinals Ellington had 660 rushing yards, three rushing touchdowns, plus 46 receptions for 395 yards and two receiving touchdowns. That was some time ago, and Ellington has not produced anything close to that since and was out of the league in 2018. Ellington will be hard pressed to make the final roster but will attempt to do so as a receiving back for the Bucs.

49ers | Quartet of RBs work out for 49ers    Tue Oct 9, 05:56 PM

Free-agent RBs Shane Vereen (Saints), Charcandrick West (Chiefs), Andre Ellington and Matt Dayes (Browns) worked out for the San Francisco 49ers Tuesday, Oct. 9.

Footballguys view: The 49ers are clearly looking for running back help. Matt Breida is going to miss Week 6 against the Packers, so the team should turn to Alfred Morris as the starter. We should see fullback Kyle Juszczyk get involved as a receiver out of the backfield.

Texans | Houston claims Andre Ellington    Tue Nov 21, 04:39 PM

The Houston Texans claimed RB Andre Ellington off waivers from the Arizona Cardinals Tuesday, Nov. 21, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Texans are looking for help at the position, especially with rookie D'Onta Foreman going down with an Achilles' injury in Week 11. Ellington is a good receiver out of the backfield and could eventually earn a spot as the change-of-pace back behind starter Lamar Miller. His main competition for that position would be Alfred Blue.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington released    Mon Nov 20, 04:52 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington was released Monday, Nov. 20. Free-agent RB Bronson Hill (Vikings) was signed to the practice squad in a corresponding move.

Footballguys view: Hill was undrafted out of Eastern Michigan in 2015 and he's bounced around to now eight different teams. Ellington signed a one-year deal to stay with the Cardinals this year but his role never materialized as a runner or receiver.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington catches nine passes    Sun Oct 8, 05:19 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington caught nine passes for 65 yards against the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 5.

Footballguys view: Ellington has emerged as a favorite short-range receiving option for Carson Palmer, and he fits well in an offense that often plays from behind and has no running game. He's a PPR flex, if not an RB2 against Tampa Bay next week.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington leads all RBs in targets    Wed Oct 4, 11:32 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington has garnered the most targets of any running back in the NFL through the season's first four weeks, drawing 30 throws from QB Carson Palmer. That's one ahead of Chicago Bears RB Tarik Cohen and Carolina Panthers RB Christian McCaffrey.

Footballguys view: That ups his value a bit as he doesn't get much in the way of carries. Still, Ellington is no more than a flex or RB4 option.

Arizona Cardinals RB Kerwynn Williams will be the starting running back this week with RB Andre Ellington serving as the No. 2 running back, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: At least we have some clarity now after Arians hinted on Sirius XM that Ellington might be the lead back. Either way, fantasy owners are looking at a two- and maybe three-headed RBBC that includes the newly signed Chris Johnson.

Cardinals | Arizona turning to Andre Ellington?    Wed Sep 13, 12:05 AM

Adding more context to an earlier report, Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians told Sirius XM NFL Radio Tuesday, Sept. 12, he is hopeful RB David Johnson (wrist) can return 'by Thanksgiving or Christmas.' In the meantime, Arians hinted RB Andre Ellington would be the player most likely to carry the load for the Cardinals in Johnson's absence.

Footballguys view: Just when you thought this backfield was enough of a mess with a returning Chris Johnson to cut into the touches of potential starter Kerwynn Williams. Ellington has big-play ability and a long history of getting banged up with increasing touches. This backfield is a mess that fantasy owners should avoid until we get more clarity.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington going back to RB    Wed Jun 7, 02:25 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington is moving back to running back, and the team will be looking for him to have a tougher running style, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Well that didn't last long. Ellington was moved to wide receiver this offseason to make the most of his quickness, agility and speed in the open field. When John Brown is healthy, Jaron Brown as the no3 wideout and rookie Chad Williams impressing, Ellington gets moved back to the backfield. Having a tougher runner style just isn't in his DNA, and Ellington should only be used in space.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington learning new role    Sun May 21, 11:22 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Andre Ellington said the hardest part of his transition from running back to wide receiver is the change in terminology.

Footballguys view: The terminology is one thing, and the route-running is something else. Ellington was a hyper-fast/quick player as a running back, and at his new position we anticipate the team will set him up with short throws he could potentially turn into long gains. What kind of fantasy value Ellington has at wide receiver remains to be seen.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington receiving praise    Wed May 10, 12:27 PM

Arizona Cardinals WR Andre Ellington is getting more comfortable with the nuances of being a receiver and has the fluidity and ability to run routes with the right angle and bend, according to QB Carson Palmer.

Footballguys view: Ellington is making the transition from the backfield to wide receiver in 2017. He's got the speed and the quickness to be dangerous in open space, but Ellington will need to get the nuances of running routes down before he's able to excel at his new position.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington moving to receiver    Wed Mar 29, 11:42 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington is moving to wide receiver, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: Wow. It's a bit of a shock, but with Ellington's skill set it makes sense. He'll compete with guys like Jaron Brown for a spot behind Larry Fitzgerald, J.J. Nelson and John Brown. The primary backup to David Johnson is now Kerwynn Williams, although we could see the Cardinals picking up a rookie RB at some point in the 2017 NFL draft.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington to play receiver more    Tue Mar 14, 04:05 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington is expected to be used more as a wide receiver than a running back in 2017. He will play both positions, but the Cardinals like him more at wide receiver, according to azcentral.com's Kent Somers.

Footballguys view: This is an interesting bit of news. Ellington is fast, quick and dangerous in the open field but he's gotten too banged up as a runner. Using him as a receiver keeps him away from larger bodies in the middle of the field and still makes him a weapon for the Cardinals offense.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington re-signs     Mon Mar 13, 04:12 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington re-signed to an undisclosed deal Monday, March 13.

Footballguys view: Ellington stays with the Cardinals to continue as a reserve runner behind David Johnson. He's a high-value handcuff if you've got larger rosters in your fantasy league.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington to become free agent    Sun Jan 15, 06:03 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington will be an unrestricted free agent Thursday, March 9, at 4 p.m. EST.

Footballguys view: The speedy back could use a change of scenery if he wants a larger role. He was the primary backup to David Johnson this year and had a career-low 96 yards rushing and a career-low 85 yards receiving. He may get a chance to compete for a starting role somewhere else in 2017. Ellington will have a lot to prove as the RB position is always cramped, will get more cramped with a great RB class coming in, and Ellington's injury history is also a concern.

Cardinals | David Johnson is an every-down back    Tue Sep 27, 11:13 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson played 79 of a possible 82 snaps against the Buffalo Bills in Week 3. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington logged just three and one, respectively.

Footballguys view: Any concern about Johnson splitting time in the backfield has been squashed this year. David Johnson is a star player, and he's the centerpiece of the Cardinals offense. While they are struggling in the passing game at times, Johnson is solid on the ground. He's also one of the best receivers out of the backfield in the league. There is no doubt that Johnson is a set-it-and-forget-it starter each week for fantasy owners.

Cardinals | David Johnson will have help    Thu Aug 11, 04:29 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson will not be run into the ground early on in the regular season because RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will be able to help, according to head coach Bruce Arians.

Footballguys view: How much will Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington see the field? Overall we have David Johnson as an excellent RB1, but if Arians starts splitting carries to keep the young player fresh, it will hurt his production. Arians has other more important things to worry about, but Fantasy GMs don't, so keep an eye on reports out of camp.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington could return kicks    Fri Jul 29, 04:04 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington could return kickoffs because it would be hard to have three active running backs and none playing special teams.

Footballguys view: Ellington is still very explosive and a great passing game weapon, but he appears to be out of head coach Bruce Arians' good graces and will need to provide value elsewhere to be active over special teamer Stepfan Taylor.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington could play receiver    Mon Jul 18, 05:55 PM

The majority of Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington's playing time may come at wide receiver, as long as RBs David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, according to azcardinals.com's Darren Urban.

Footballguys view: Ellington could easily be a slot receiver for the Cardinals. He's quick enough to break ankles in the open field, and Ellington has the speed to gain separation on linebackers or safeties. He's missed 11 games in three years with the Cardinals, but Ellington has ran 571 routes during that time--a mark good for 23rd in the league at the RB position. If David Johnson and Chris Johnson are healthy, there may not be many touches for Ellington as a rusher.

Cardinals | David Johnson will be featured    Mon Jul 18, 05:45 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is the unquestioned bellcow running back for the Cardinals this year, according to Darren Urban of azcardinals.com. RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington will back up like they did for most of 2015.

Footballguys view: David Johnson shined during his rookie season with the Cardinals. His blend of size/power/speed is one that gets any fantasy football player excited. He's a first-round pick this year and has the opportunity to finish as the best RB in fantasy football. Johnson's current ADP is RB3 (1.08) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Cards could use two RBs at a time    Tue Jun 7, 10:11 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson is expected to get a lion's share of the work, but RBs Chris Johnson and Andre Ellington each have skillsets which could help the offense. In fact, head coach Bruce Arians hinted Tuesday, June 7, that two backs could be on the field at the same time. 'When I first came here, that's something B.A. told me he wanted to do,' Chris Johnson said. 'It started off with me getting here late (in training camp), then Andre getting hurt early and me getting hurt. It was hard to get two of us on the field at one time, but that's something we've really been working hard on.'

Footballguys view: David Johnson is well worth taking in the first round of all fantasy drafts, but it will be interesting to see how the team mixes in Chris Johnson and Ellington behind him. Right now, Chris Johnson is going off the board at RB53 (13.02) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington may be in trouble    Wed Feb 24, 09:15 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington could be on the roster bubble because he has not lived up to expectations at this point, according general manager John Keim. 'Andre hasn't proved he can be a 20-25 touch-a-game guy. David Johnson has,' Keim said. 'If the guy doesn't fulfill expectations, it's time to move on.'

Footballguys view: Ellington's injury history has become a thorn in Bruce Arians' side. Johnson's smashing success right after yet another Ellington injury right after a Chris Johnson injury symbolized the change occurring in this backfield. Ellington is a an explosive talent but it sounds like he is on the outs in Arizona.
