  NFL | Veteran-heavy 2015 UFA QB class    Sun Jun 15, 12:26 PM

The NFL's scheduled unrestricted free-agent quarterback class for 2015 features 14 players who will be at least 30 years of age, including Indianapolis Colts QB Matt Hasselbeck (39), St. Louis Rams QB Shaun Hill (35), Arizona Cardinals QB Carson Palmer (35), New York Jets QB Michael Vick (34), Cincinnati Bengals QB Jason Campbell (33), New Orleans Saints QB Luke McCown (33), Seattle Seahawks QB Tarvaris Jackson (32), Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith (31), Oakland Raiders QB Trent Edwards (31), Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer (31), Detroit Lions QB Dan Orlovsky (31), Cleveland Browns QB Tyler Thigpen (31) and Miami Dolphins QB Matt Moore (30). Estranged Dallas Cowboys QB Kyle Orton (32) is also scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent, although he is reportedly leaning toward retirement.

Footballguys view: Any team looking for a solid veteran backup will have plenty to choose from. The only one of this list who could still be an effective starter is Carson Palmer. We'll see if Arizona tries to sign him to a new deal if he impresses in 2014.

Falcons | Look at two QBs    Tue Nov 19, 09:58 PM

The Atlanta Falcons worked out free-agent QBs Trent Edwards (Bears) and Mike Kafka (Jaguars) Tuesday, Nov. 19.

Footballguys view: The Falcons are likely just updating their emergency list here. They have Dominique Davis as the primary backup behind Matt Ryan. Rookie Sean Renfree was placed on Injured Reserve earlier this year.

Bears | Jordan Palmer, Trent Edwards to play one half    Wed Aug 28, 05:28 PM

Chicago Bears QB Jordan Palmer will start the final preseason game and play the first half while QB Trent Edwards will play the second half.

Footballguys view: The Bears may not keep three QBs unless one of these guys impresses the staff in the preseason finale. They have Josh McCown locked in as the primary backup behind Jay Cutler.

Bears | Top two QBs won't play preseason finale    Tue Aug 20, 12:33 PM

Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman said Monday, Aug. 19, that neither QB Jay Cutler nor QB Josh McCown will play in the preseason finale Aug. 29, against the Cleveland Browns. QBs Trent Edwards and Jordan Palmer will get a chance to earn a job, likely splitting the reps. QB Matt Blanchard (hand) was in line to be the third quarterback, but he suffered a hand injury which might sideline him up to a month.

Footballguys view: The team is set at the top two QBs. We'll see if Palmer or Edwards can make enough of an impression so the team will keep them around on the 53-man roster.

Bears | Two new QBs will play in last preseason game    Mon Aug 19, 06:35 PM

Chicago Bears QBs Jordan Palmer and Trent Edwards will be the only two quarterbacks to play in the team's final preseason game. QBs Jay Cutler and Josh McCown will sit the game out.

Footballguys view: Not a surprise here. The final preseason game is always for the younger players who are trying to make a final impression and make the team. Cutler and McCown are locked into the final roster. We'll see if Palmer or Edwards can impress enough for the team to keep them around in 2013.

Bears | One signed, one cut    Sun Aug 18, 03:40 PM

The Chicago Bears signed free-agent QB Trent Edwards (Eagles) to a one-year deal and waived WR Jerrell Jackson.

Footballguys view: The Bears were looking for additional QB help after the loss of Matt Blanchard to a broken non-throwing hand. They added Edwards to compete as the QB3 with Jordan Palmer, who was just signed on Friday. Josh McCown is expected to be the primary backup behind Jay Cutler.

Bears | Looking to add third quarterback    Fri Aug 16, 01:51 PM

Updating a previous report, the Chicago bears are looking to add a third quarterback after the team lost QB Michael Blanchard (hand) with a broken non-throwing hand. 'I'm not sure about the time that he'll be out, but we're sitting here with two quarterbacks going into next week,' Bears coach Marc Trestman said. 'Certainly that's something that we're gonna have to repair fairly quickly to get a third quarterback on the roster.'

Footballguys view: Earlier this summer the Bears worked out Jamarcus Russell, Trent Edwards, and Jordan Palmer. They could add one of those guys or look to other street free agents currently available.

Bears | Will not sign any QBs that worked out    Fri Jun 7, 05:17 PM

The Chicago Bears will not sign free-agent QB JaMarcus Russell (Raiders), QB Trent Edwards (Eagles) or QB Jordan Palmer (Jaguars) after working them out earlier this week.

Footballguys view: The Bears were just updating their emergency list. At this time they're comfortable with Josh McCown and Matt Blanchard as the backups behind Jay Cutler.

Eagles | Trent Edwards asked for release    Wed Apr 17, 03:10 PM

Updating a previous report, Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said QB Trent Edwards asked to be released in order to have the opportunity to sign with another team.

Footballguys view: The team obliged and let Edwards go. He wasn't a good fit for Kelly's new system he's installing in Philadelphia.

NFL | Trent Edwards asked for release    Tue Apr 16, 03:08 PM

Free agent QB Trent Edwards (Eagles) asked the Eagles to be released, according to Eagles head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: Edwards wanted to pursue opportunities elsewhere and the team obliged. He wasn't a good fit for the Chip Kelly offense and could find a home with a team looking for a veteran backup.

Eagles | Trent Edwards cut    Mon Apr 15, 06:07 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles have released QB Trent Edwards.

Footballguys view: Edwards doesn't really fit the Chip Kelly offense. The Eagles have Michael Vick, Nick Foles, and Dennis Dixon on the roster already. Edwards should be able to find a home as at least a camp arm in 2013.

The Philadelphia Eagles have declared WR Damaris Johnson, RB Dion Lewis, LB Jamar Chaney, OT Nate Menkin, OG Steve Vallos, QB Trent Edwards, DL Vinny Curry inactive for Week 6.

The Philadelphia Eagles have declared LB Akeem Jordan, RB Chris Polk, OT Nate Menkin, WR Riley Cooper, OG Steve Vallos, QB Trent Edwards, DL Vinny Curry inactive for Week 5.

Eagles | Trent Edwards gets extension    Wed Sep 5, 05:23 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles have signed QB Trent Edwards to a one-year contract extension that will run through the 2013 season. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Edwards was very impressive this preseason and ended up beating out Mike Kafka for the QB3 job. He gives the Eagles veteran depth behind Michael Vick and Nick Foles.

Eagles | Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards could compete for spot    Wed Aug 29, 12:30 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards may be fighting for one roster spot if the team decides to keep three quarterbacks on the final roster. QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles appear to be locks to make the roster.

Footballguys view: Kafka's injury to his non-throwing hand has put him squarely on the roster bubble. It opened the door for Foles to show what he could do against better competition in the preseason.

Eagles | Backup QB not decided    Tue Aug 28, 01:26 PM

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg said the team hasn't made a decision on their backup quarterback between QBs Nick Foles, Mike Kafka (hand) and Trent Edwards. Kafka hasn't played the last two preseason games with a hand injury. Foles has gone 36-of-57 for 507 yards, six touchdowns and two interceptions. Foles appears to be the favorite for the backup job, and Kafka might be in danger of not making the roster cut.

Eagles | Nick Foles to start Friday     Wed Aug 22, 11:32 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Nick Foles will start in the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 24, and may play up to a half. QB Trent Edwards will be the No. 2 quarterback in the game.

Footballguys view: Mike Kafka's injury has put Foles's career on a faster track. If he performs well in the "dress rehearsal" preseason game, Foles could hold the backup job at some point this season, and even give the Eagles pause about paying Vick's exorbitant price tag in 2013 if he can't stay healthy this year.

Eagles | Michael Vick to have further tests    Tue Aug 21, 12:29 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Michael Vick (ribs) will undergo another MRI exam and a CT scan Tuesday, Aug. 21, to see if there is damage to his ribs other than a fracture. Vick isn't ruled out for the next preseason game Friday, Aug. 25, but he's unlikely to play in that contest. QB Mike Kafka (hand) won't play either with a fractured hand, so QBs Nick Foles and Trent Edwards will likely split the time. Vick sounds optimistic that his injury isn't serious.

Footballguys view: This is standard operating procedure and not a sign of a more severe injury. The team is doing their due diligence to make sure Vick is healthy.

Eagles | Trent Edwards may not get many reps in camp    Thu Jul 12, 03:19 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Trent Edwards may have trouble getting significant snaps during training camp since there will only be one full practice a week during camp.

Footballguys view: Edwards may not make the final roster as we don't expect the Eagles to carry four QBs. He's competing with Mike Kafka to be the primary backup behind Michael Vick. Kafka is expected to win the job, making Edwards expendable. Rookie Nick Foles is likely going to be their third-string developmental QB this year.

Eagles | Trent Edwards wasn't comfortable in workouts    Sat Jul 7, 12:26 AM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Trent Edwards had his mechanics adjusted to the style of the team's other quarterbacks, and he was uncomfortable in organized team activities (OTAs) and minicamp. He will work with former NFL assistant coach Ted Tollner until training camp starts.

Footballguys view: Edwards is competing with Mike Kafka to be the primary backup behind Michael Vick. His struggles in minicamp have put him behind in that competition. We think Edwards could get cut as the Eagles are likely to only carry three QBs this year. Rookie Nick Foles is locked in as the third-string, developmental QB.

Eagles | Mike Kafka, Trent Edwards to compete for No. 2 job    Wed May 2, 12:29 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QBs Mike Kafka and Trent Edwards are expected to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp.

Footballguys view: We don't expect the Eagles to carry four QBs so whoever loses the primary backup job will likely get cut. Rookie Nick Foles will be the developmental third-string QB. He's a tall, statuesque QB with a strong arm but he has a lot of improvements to make if he's ever going to see the field.

Eagles | Nick Foles, two other QBs competing    Fri Apr 27, 11:04 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid said Friday, April 27, that QBs Trent Edwards, Nick Foles and Mike Kafka are 'all competing.' The Eagles added Foles in the third round of the NFL Draft Friday.

Footballguys view: Foles is a big QB with a strong arm and some mobility. However, his accuracy and mechanics need a lot of work before he's ever going to start in the pros. Foles also didn't win many games in college and struggled in pressure situations.

Eagles | Trent Edwards agrees to terms    Thu Feb 23, 05:00 PM

Free-agent QB Trent Edwards (Raiders) took a physical with the Philadelphia Eagles Tuesday, Jan. 31. Edwards also worked out for the team two weeks ago.

Footballguys view: The team could lose Vince Young via free agency this year and may be in the market for a veteran backup to compete with Mike Kafka for the second QB spot behind Michael Vick.

The Oakland Raiders have not scheduled workouts with free-agent QBs Josh McCown (49ers) and Trent Edwards (Raiders) at this point.

The Oakland Raiders terminated the contracts of WR Shaun Bodiford, QB Trent Edwards, FS Matt Giordano, OG Daniel Loper and LB Sam Williams Saturday, Sept. 3.

Footballguys view: Edwards couldn't beat out Kyle Boller to backup Jason Campbell. With the way Campbell has played over the years, Edwards would have had a decent shot at playing time if he had.

Oakland Raiders head coach Hue Jackson said Monday, Aug. 29, that he is pretty sure he knows which way he is leaning in the backup QB battle between Kyle Boller and Trent Edwards. In the game Sunday, Aug. 28, against the New Orleans Saints, Edwards looked indecisive, while Boller was adequate.

Raiders | Three QBs expected to remain on roster     Mon Aug 29, 09:49 AM

Raiders | Backup QB battle remains tight    Mon Aug 29, 01:11 AM

Oakland Raiders QB Kyle Boller completed five of his seven pass attempts for 69 yards in the preseason game Sunday, Aug. 28, against the New Orleans Saints. QB Trent Edwards connected on six of his 10 attempts for 60 yards, but he also lost a fumble. Edwards did not get to work with many first- or second-team players as Boller, but he looked unsure on several plays, and he was sacked three times.

Footballguys view: Both Boller and Edwards will make the team now, but this battle is important because once rookie Terrelle Pryor comes back from his suspension then somebody has to go.

Raiders | Battle at backup quarterback    Sun Jul 31, 03:49 AM

Oakland Raiders QBs Trent Edwards and Kyle Boller will battle during training camp for the No. 2 quarterback role.

Footballguys view: Raiders fans have to hope Jason Campbell improves and stays healthy when they look at those two names. Edwards check down show would be better for eventual re-signee Zach Miller, while Boller's occasional bravado and arm strength would suit Jacoby Ford better.

The Jacksonville Jaguars are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Trent Edwards or QB Todd Bouman because of the addition of QB Blaine Gabbert.

The Seattle Seahawks were interested in acquiring Buffalo Bills QB Trent Edwards last offseason but were not able to agree to a deal, a source told Adam Caplan, of FOXSports.com.

Footballguys view: The team then turned it's attention then Chargers QB Charlie Whitehurst after their failed attempt at Edwards. There are some Seahawks fans who would have preferred Edwards to Whitehurst. We feel the team will consider selecting a quarterback in the 2011 NFL Draft.
