NFL | Jonathan Dwyer suspended three games    Wed Sep 9, 08:59 AM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Dwyer (Cardinals) was suspended three games by the NFL.

Footballguys view: Dwyer wasn't getting hardly any interest on the open market anyway. This suspension isn't going to help his cause.

NFL | Jonathan Dwyer free to sign with any team    Sun Mar 15, 02:23 AM

Free-agent RB Jonathan Dwyer (Cardinals) is free to sign with any team, but the NFL has indicated Dwyer's discipline is 'pending' following Dwyer's guilty plea to a disorderly conduct charge.

Footballguys view: The running back market is already brutal for veterans like Dwyer. Throw in a domestic violence incident, and Dwyer's stock is downright toxic. Don't expect teams to line up around the block to add him to the roster.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer sentenced to probation    Thu Jan 29, 08:09 PM

According to the Associated Press, Arizona Cardinals running back Jonathan Dwyer has pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and been placed on probation in a case stemming from alleged assaults on his wife during arguments at their apartment last year.

Footballguys view: After Dwyer's arrest in September, the Cardinals placed him on the reserve/non-football illness list. That move kept him from playing for the Cardinals in 2014. Dwyer is set to be a free agent in 2015, and there might be a small market for him now that this legal case is behind him.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer won't return unless exonerated    Fri Sep 19, 12:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer, who was charged in a domestic violence case involving his wife and young son, may not return to the team unless he's exonerated from his charges, according to head coach Bruce Arians. Dwyer was placed on the Reserve/Non-Football Injury list, which means he can't return for the rest of the season. The Cardinals will continue to pay his $730,000 salary.

Cardinals | Stepfan Taylor to see more work    Thu Sep 18, 02:02 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor will likely see his role increased with RB Jonathan Dwyer deactivated indefinitely. Stepfan is a smaller back than Dwyer. Taylor and RB Robert Hughes have combined for two carries for four yards in two games as the team's third and fourth options. RB Andre Ellington (foot) also missed practice Wednesday, Sept. 17, and the team is hoping he can do some work Thursday, Sept. 18.

Footballguys view: Andre "Duke" Ellington will still get the workload, but Taylor just became his handcuff. Taylor will be the "big back" and goal line option, spelling Ellington as well when he needs it. He's not worth much more than a flex though, somewhere along the line of a RB3 or RB4 unless Ellington gets hurt.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer deactivated    Wed Sep 17, 07:58 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer has been deactivated from all team activities Wednesday, Sept. 17. The team was made aware of allegations by the Phoenix police and are cooperating fully with authorities.

Footballguys view: The team plans to closely monitor the situation as it develops and evaluate additional information as it becomes available. Without Dwyer, the Cardinals will turn to Stepfan Taylor as the primary backup behind Andre Ellington.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington limited Sunday    Mon Sep 8, 11:17 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) was limited again in the walkthrough Sunday, Sept. 7, according to general manager Steve Keim. The team will evaluate him in pre-game warmups Monday, Sept. 8, before determining whether he will play or not.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners should have already made plans to play without Ellington this week.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington limited    Sat Sep 6, 06:40 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) was limited in practice Saturday, Sept. 6, and is questionable for Week 1.

Footballguys view: Again, this is a situation to avoid as there is too much uncertainty around and too much of a chance you'll end up in a position where you are stuck with nobody to change out due to the late kickoff time.

Cardinals | Jonathan Dwyer prepared to start    Sat Sep 6, 01:37 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Jonathan Dwyer said he's prepared to start this week if RB Andre Ellington (foot) can't play. Dwyer said each running back prepares as if they're going to start every week.

Footballguys view: We don't know if Dwyer will play, how much or whether we'll see Andre Ellington. We'd pass on this uncertain situation, especially for a late Monday night game.

Cardinals | Andre Ellington not at practice    Fri Sep 5, 04:44 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) was not present at practice Friday, Sept. 5, and he's scheduled to be looked at by a local foot specialist. It's unknown if he'll be able to play in Week 1 against the San Diego Chargers Monday, Sept. 8. If he can't go, RB Jonathan Dwyer will start in his place. Dwyer had 49 carries for 197 yards with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season.

Cardinals | Ellington could miss 4-6 weeks?    Fri Sep 5, 01:46 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) could be out for four to six weeks or longer, depending on his prognosis. His timetable for a return will depend mainly on how quickly he heals.

Footballguys view: Jonathan Dwyer is the pick up here, but he is really only flex or bye/injury/emergency material with a low weekly ceiling. Remember Rashard Mendenhall's 2013? That's basically the best case scenario for Dwyer.

Cardinals | Ellington could be out a while    Fri Sep 5, 11:35 AM

Arizona Cardinals RB Andre Ellington (foot) aggravated his left foot injury in practice Thursday, Sept. 4. He underwent an MRI and could miss a significant amount of time.

Footballguys view: This is proceeding by the typical script of a long absence reveal. Prepare for the worst if you own Ellington and definitely get him out of your lineups with a Monday night start until we hear positive news. Jonathan Dwyer would get the start with Stepfan Taylor mixed in, but if Ellington is out awhile then they could also sign or trade for another back. The Cardinals running game has been a fantasy black hole for a while and it could remain one for even longer. This would not be good for Carson Palmer, although rookie speedster John Brown could get a lot more looks in three-wide sets if Ellington is on the shelf for a bit.

Cardinals | Stepfan Taylor works with first-team    Tue Jul 29, 11:23 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor worked with the first-team offense in place of RB Andre Ellington (neck) Tuesday, July 29. Josh Weinfuss of ESPN.com believes the move means that Taylor is ahead of RB Jonathan Dwyer in the battle for the No. 2 RB job.

Footballguys view: We're not surprised Taylor would be the next man up. He's a good all-purpose back who can stand out as a runner between the tackles or a receiver out of the backfield.

Cardinals | No clear backup to Andre Ellington    Tue Jul 15, 10:42 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB Stepfan Taylor and RB Jonathan Dwyer will both be used to spell RB Andre Ellington this season, according to ESPN.com's Josh Weinfuss.

Footballguys view: Dwyer is familiar with the Arians system from their days together in Pittsburgh. Taylor has one year of experience under his belt, and he's a much better all-purpose back. We think Ellington gets as much work as he can possibly stand, leaving little for Taylor or Dwyer.

Cardinals | Coach likes what he sees from Jonathan Dwyer    Wed Jul 2, 11:03 PM

Arizona Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he has been impressed with how RB Jonathan Dwyer looked during offseason workouts. 'He's in better shape and he's running routes and catching the ball better than I remember,' Arians said. 'I know he'll pound you and can really run the football. I know he can pass block. But he caught the ball extremely well. He made some catches in the red zone for us. That was a surprise.'

Footballguys view: Dwyer is a tough little bowling ball and the improvement of his receiving skills is good. That said, his fantasy impact is marginal and he's no more than deep bench depth in any league.

Steelers | May look to re-sign two RBs    Sat Feb 8, 12:22 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers may look to re-sign impending free-agent RBs Jonathan Dwyer and LaRod Stephens-Howling this offseason.

Footballguys view: Stephens-Howling didn't get to prove much last year for the Steelers. He suffered a knee injury in the team's Week 1 game against the Titans, and he was lost for the season. Stephens-Howling could be ready for the start of training camp, and he would give the Steelers a fine change-of-pace option behind Le'Veon Bell.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell hopes to play    Mon Dec 2, 04:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (concussion) did some running Monday, Dec. 2, and is hoping to play in Week 14 against the Miami Dolphins after suffering a concussion in the team's Week 13 contest. 'I'm going to take it day by day and see where we're at,' Bell said. 'The goal is obviously to play but if (I'm) not able to I'm not able to.' Bell doesn't remember the hit but hasn't had many lingering effects from the violent collision. He took an ImPACT test Sunday, Dec. 1, and will have to pass more concussion tests before being cleared.

Footballguys view: Bell was on the receiving end of a nasty hit near the goal line against the Ravens. His helmet came off, and then his head hit the ground unprotected. Watch the practice report to see if the rookie back can be cleared later in the week.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer may see more playing time    Tue Nov 12, 12:29 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said RB Jonathan Dwyer may see more playing time. Tomlin said that Dwyer has also been a spark plug on special teams.

Footballguys view: Dwyer should not cut into Le'Veon Bell's playing time. Bell has done a good job as a runner or receiver out of the backfield. If Dwyer gets more playing time then it will only be as a reserve behind Bell.

Steelers | Big Ben unsure of Le'Veon Bell's return    Wed Sep 25, 02:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to make his season debut against the Minnesota Vikings in Week 4, but QB Ben Roethlisberger isn't so sure of that. 'Honestly, I have no idea with him,' Roethlisberger said. 'You can't get a read on him. One day, he's practicing, one day, he's not; one day, he's going hard, the next day, he's not. I wish I could.' Bell was banged up in the preseason and only rushed four times for nine yards.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need something or someone to jump start the ground game. The answer could be Le'Veon Bell. Coming out of Michigan State Bell showed good footwork for a big man. He has build up power and build up speed through the hole. Bell can grind down opponents and would be a welcome addition to the Steelers offense.

Steelers | Isaac Redman sinks to bottom of depth chart    Tue Sep 24, 03:45 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman, the team's Week 1 starter at running back, is now listed as fourth on the depth chart behind RBs Felix Jones, Le'Veon Bell (foot) and Jonathan Dwyer, in that order. Jones is the team's leading rusher with 71 yards and is averaging 4.2 yards per carry.

Footballguys view: Redman hangs around for veteran depth but it's clear he's not he answer at the position. That answer may in fact be Bell, the rookie from Michigan State. Bell is expected to play in Week 4 against the Minnesota Vikings, but they'll likely ease him back into the mix.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell expected to play    Tue Sep 24, 12:49 PM

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) is expected to play in the team's Week 4 game in London against the Minnesota Vikings. Bell has progressed ahead of schedule from his injury.

Footballguys view: Bell could get a bunch of touches against a Vikings defense that can be abused up front. The Steelers need a spark to their offense from the backfield and the rookie could provide it in easier matchups. If he does play then Bell is a "what the heck" flex in Week 4.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer's role unclear    Thu Sep 12, 01:53 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer is unsure what his role will be heading into Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals. 'They told me to get ready and play,' Dwyer said. 'I don't know exactly what I'm doing. I'm just getting myself ready to play.' The Steelers finished with only 32 total rushing yards in Week 1, the second lowest around the league, and RB Isaac Redman fumbled twice and had only eight carries for nine yards.

Footballguys view: He'll likely get his shot at some point, even though he is behind fumbling Isaac Redman and Felix Jones, who is still learning the offense. With Maurkice Pouncey on injured reserve and the offensive line playing poorly anyway, none of these backs are worth much. Redman might fill in at the flex spot, but you're better off avoiding this backfield entirely.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell could miss more time    Wed Sep 11, 10:56 AM

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's (foot) injury is now being classified as a Lisfranc sprain, according to a source. The team is now hoping he returns in a month.

Footballguys view: More bad news for the Steelers here. In the meantime we'll see Isaac Redman, Felix Jones, and newly re-signed Jonathan Dwyer in the backfield. At this time Redman would be the one worth starting at a flex spot if you're truly desperate. You're better off if you can avoid this situation.

Steelers | Felix Jones not comfortable with offense    Tue Sep 10, 04:19 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Felix Jones is listed last on the team's running back depth chart, and head coach Mike Tomlin said Jones' lack of experience in the offense is the reason why he played very little in Week 1 against the Tennessee Titans. Recently re-signed RB Jonathan Dwyer is even listed ahead of Jones.

Footballguys view: Jones isn't much of a fantasy factor now that he's buried on the depth chart in Pittsburgh. The entire RB rotation is just keeping the seat warm for rookie Le'Veon Bell. We should see Bell return from his foot injury in a few weeks, perhaps after the team's week 5 bye.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer returning    Mon Sep 9, 08:15 AM

The Pittsburgh Steelers will re-sign RB Jonathan Dwyer.

Footballguys view: No surprise here. Isaac Redman fumbled near the end zone and did not impress against the Titans. LaRod Stephens-Howling suffered a knee injury and is out for the season. Felix Jones barely played and missed badly in pass protection. We could see Dwyer get a majority of the carries until rookie Le'Veon Bell is back from his foot injury.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell injury update    Wed Aug 21, 02:14 PM

Updating a previous report, the Pittsburgh Steelers believe RB Le'Veon Bell (foot) has a Lisfranc injury but are hoping he will not need surgery. The team will not know if he will need surgery until he gets his second opinion.

Footballguys view: Lisfranc is an injury that can linger for quite some time and Bell may be missing around 4-6 weeks at minimum. We'll know more about his injury if he can avoid surgery. Bell is now off draft boards for fantasy owners and players that already drafted him as a RB2 are left scrambling. The Steelers will use guys like Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman while Bell is out. Footballguys view: Foot problems are known to linger if not treated properly and given enough time to heal. No word on whether or not this is a Lisfranc injury but there are suspicions that it could be. With Bell out we'll see more from Jonathan Dwyer and Isaac Redman with the first team offense.

Updating previous reports, Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell (knee) aggravated his left knee Thursday, Aug. 15, when a teammate hit him in a non-contact drill. Bell didn't take another snap and had his left leg heavily wrapped after practice.

Footballguys view: Possible bad news for the Steelers here. No word on the severity here so we'll have to wait and see how long this could keep Bell off the field. Most of the news is reporting that Bell's injury is minor, and we haven't heard anything about an MRI or diagnosis.

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer sheds weight    Tue Jul 30, 08:17 AM

Steelers | Jonathan Dwyer not guaranteed spot    Sun Jul 21, 12:40 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer is not a lock to make the final roster entering training camp.

Footballguys view: Isaac Redman has developed from a short yardage practice squad back into a solid all-around back who should secure a spot as a third-down back. Either of LaRod Stephens-Howling or Baron Batch can contribute on special teams. Dwyer has to have the camp of his career to make the Steelers, but if he can, he could see time rotating with second-round pick Le'Veon Bell.

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman said he believes the team will be able to effectively use him, RB Le'Veon Bell and RB Jonathan Dwyer this season because they want to establish the running game.

Footballguys view: Bell was drafted in the second-round of the 2013 NFL draft and will compete to be the starting job. He's a momentum runner who needs a big workload to grind down the defense. Bell is the favorite to win the job with Redman and Dwyer competing for the backup position.

Steelers | No depth chart for RBs    Wed Jun 12, 03:08 PM

'There really is no pecking order other than that's how we ended the season. Guys are jumping in accordingly and rotating themselves. There really is no rhyme or reason to it,' Wilson said. RB Jonathan Dwyer will enter training camp as No. 1 on the depth chart because he finished last season there.

Footballguys view: We'd expect to see rookie Le'Veon Bell (Michigan State) win the starting job at some point this year. Bell is a big runner who can be difficult to bring down when he's at full speed. He's got good footwork and moves in the open field to make people miss.

Steelers | New blocking scheme in the works    Fri May 24, 01:00 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach Jack Bicknell Jr. is installing an outside zone, one-cut blocking scheme in organized team activities in favor of their old power and inside blocking scheme. The Steelers are changing their approach to take advantage of their big and nimble offensive line personnel. Pittsburgh got poor production from their running backs last year, and RB Jonathan Dwyer led the team in rushing with only 623 yards, the lowest total by a rusher in team history since Merrill Hoge ran for 810 in 1991. Bicknell had success with the blocking scheme with the Kansas City Chiefs last year. 'We are going to be dedicated to the zone,' RB Isaac Redman said. 'We are still going to be a power team, but we are going to have this zone scheme in so we can keep the defense on its heels and keep them running.'

Footballguys view: The outside zone is a better fit for rookie RB Le'Veon Bell (Michigan State). He's a big runner who is swift when he builds a head of steam. Using outside zone will allow Bell to build that power and speed before he makes a cut upfield. We're expecting Bell to win the starting job in training camp.

Steelers | Le'Veon Bell's understanding of offense will decide role    Sun May 19, 02:51 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Le'Veon Bell's chance at starting this season will be determined by how quickly he will be able to pick up the offense. If Bell struggles to learn the offense, RB Jonathan Dwyer or RB Isaac Redman could start.

Footballguys view: Like all rookies Bell must prove that he knows the playbook and can pass protect. Bell is the favorite to win the starting job in training camp. He has build up speed and can make defenders miss in the open field. Bell lacks instant power but is tough to bring down when he builds a head of steam.

Steelers | Rookie RB Bell Gets Big Yards After Contact    Thu May 2, 01:52 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie RB Le'Veon Bell is known for getting big yards after contact. In fact, last year he lead all AQ runners with 921 yards after contact. Montee Ball (Broncos) was second with 887, and Jonathan Franklin (Packers) was fourth with 765.

Footballguys view: The Steelers need a punishing runner who can be the workhorse they've been missing for years. Bell has the size (6'2" 230) to be a grinder, but also has the athleticism to be effective in the open field. He should be the Steelers lead RB in 2013.

Steelers | Emmanuel Sanders explains offensive struggles    Wed May 1, 04:23 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers WR Emmanuel Sanders said the team was not on the same page offensively, and that it was obvious, even though it was was not because of the running game. 'I like Jonathan Dwyer. We had a new offensive coordinator. At times, we weren't on the same page. And that's obvious,' Sanders said.

Footballguys view: Hopefully year two in the Todd Haley system will be better. It will help the entire offense if they can run between the tackles with greater effectiveness. Last year they averaged 3.5 YPC between the tackles, a full yard lower than their average in 2011.

Steelers | Isaac Redman could have edge in No. 2 RB job    Wed May 1, 02:52 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers RB Isaac Redman appears to have an edge over RB Jonathan Dwyer for the No. 2 running back job at this point.

Footballguys view: Redman is a favorite of the coaching staff and can be relied on as veteran depth. The team should start rookie Le'Veon Bell at the running back position. Bell is seen as a full time back so Redman is unlikely to produce much for fantasy owners.
