Jaguars | Maurice Jones-Drew retiring with team    Thu Apr 23, 02:18 PM

Free-agent RB Maurice Jones-Drew (Raiders) will sign a one-day deal to retire as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars next Tuesday, April 28. He played nine seasons and rushed for 8,167 yards and 68 touchdowns.

Footballguys view: Jones-Drew was one of our favorite players to watch. Some said he was too small and too slow when he came out of UCLA, and he proved the doubters wrong by becoming one of the best backs in the league during his peak. Jones-Drew was also one of the first players who embraced fantasy football players.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew on the bubble?    Wed Feb 25, 04:17 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew could be on his way out of Oakland after a disappointing 2014 campaign. The veteran running back played in 12 games and averaged just 2.2 yards on 43 carries.

Footballguys view: Of course Jones-Drew is on the bubble. We could see the team go in a different direction (Reggie Bush?) as Jones-Drew isn't the player he used to be.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew needs to stay in shape    Fri Feb 13, 06:25 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew will need to keep his weight where it needs to be next season so he can be an explosive runner again, according to head coach Jack Del Rio.

Footballguys view: Jones-Drew just isn't the same player he used to be. We should see Latavius Murray as the Raiders lead back in 2015. Jones-Drew will give the team veteran depth at the position.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew hopes to return    Wed Jan 7, 12:03 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew said he hopes to return to the team next season even though he wished he would have received more work this season. Jones-Drew finished the season with 98 yards on 43 carries.

Footballguys view: Why would they bring Jones-Drew back? He's simply not the same player he used to be. The Raiders would save $2.5 million in salary cap space if they released Jones-Drew.

Raiders | Raiders excited about Latavius Murray    Fri Dec 5, 12:29 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray had 112 yards and two touchdowns on just four carries against the Kansas City Chiefs, and the team is excited about what he can provide them down the stretch. "I love the way Latavius runs the football," interim head coach Tony Sparano said. "I like what I've seen, but I've seen (14) carries. I want to see more of them. I'm curious, too. I'm curious just like the fans are curious." Despite Sparano's curiosity, he stated that Murray won't immediately be a workhorse back in Week 14 against the San Francisco 49ers. It's likely that RBs Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew will see significant touches this weekend, but Murray will likely have an increased workload than what he's seen in the past.

Footballguys view: Murray's matchup is tough and the lack of a workhorse workload is an extra disincentive to trust Murray this week. He's an upside flex play, but one with a very low floor too.

Raiders | Latavius Murray to be more involved?    Mon Nov 17, 05:21 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Latavius Murray had four carries for 43 yards in the team's Week 11 loss to the San Diego Chargers, and his 23-yard run late in the third quarter was the team's longest rushing gain for a running back of the season. 'They've been wanting to get me in the mix more and that's all I can ask,' Murray said. 'When they do, I have to make sure they give me a reason to put me back in there.' Murray is a much bigger back than either RBs Darren McFadden or Maurice Jones-Drew, and he runs with an upright style. Oakland finished with 71 yards on 19 carries, which was their highest rushing output since Oct. 12 in their first matchup with the Chargers.

Footballguys view: Murray is an interesting player to monitor in dynasty leagues. He reminds us of former Titans RB Chris Brown because Murray is a tall, upright runner with swiftness and speed in the open field.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew set for more touches?    Fri Oct 24, 01:09 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew needs to see more carries, according to head coach Tony Sparano.

Footballguys view: That doesn't mean you should go out and pickup Jones-Drew, but it could hurt the limited upside of Darren McFadden, who has been a decent flex play since he emerged in the Oakland backfield.

Raiders | Bigger role coming for MJD?    Sat Oct 11, 09:10 PM

Oakland Radiers RB Maurice Jones-Drew has just 11 carries for 12 yards in two games this season, but interim head coach Tony Sparano said he wants him to share the load with RB Darren McFadden. 'I'd like Maurice to take a little bit greater role, maybe get some snaps off of Darren,' Sparano said. 'If we could, keep them both fresh that way, but we also have got to be running the football and doing some things that way too.'

Footballguys view: McFadden is still the back that has been playing better and will get first run, so if you are going to own a Raiders back, it should be him.

Raiders | Darren McFadden goes distance    Sun Sep 28, 11:37 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden carried 11 times for 40 yards in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins in London, while RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) carried twice for just one yard. McFadden also had four receptions for 32 yards, while Jones-Drew had two catches for only two yards.

Footballguys view: McFadden has "what the heck flex" value as the best back in this backfield, but Jones-Drew is clearly on the decline and can be dropped - at least for as long as McFadden is healthy.

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden and RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) are likely to receive a 50-50 split of the carries in Week 4, in the opinion of beat writer Vic Tafur.

Footballguys view: Making neither a good play. If you need to cut someone to field a full lineup this week, your Raiders running back is a good choice, even though McFadden was playing better than his numbers so far this year.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew probable    Fri Sep 26, 06:34 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) fully participated in practice Friday, Sept. 26, and is listed as probable for Week 4.

Footballguys view: Jones-Drew and Darren McFadden will split the workload in an already limited Oakland offense, making both simply desperation plays in London against the Dolphins.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew expected to play    Thu Sep 25, 01:17 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) practiced in full Thursday, Sept. 25, and appears primed to play in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins in London. It was his first full practice since injuring his hand in Week 1. Jones-Drew will likely have a big role, along with RB Darren McFadden, against the Dolphins.

Footballguys view: It is a long way to fly and the Raiders aren't exactly making it easy on their running backs. It's a good matchup for them this week, but right now MJD is only worth about an RB4 if he plays.

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) said Wednesday, Sept. 24, on NFL Network's NFL AM, he will play in Week 4 against the Miami Dolphins.

Footballguys view: Awesome...and fantasy owners shouldn't really care that much. It's a good matchup for running backs as the Dolphins have had plenty of problems stopping the run this year, but MJD is still going to be splitting time with Darren McFadden in the backfield. We see both as RB3/flex plays in Week 4. McFadden would approach low-end RB2 status if Jones-Drew does not play.

The Oakland Raiders have declared CB Chimdi Chekwa, QB Matt Schaub, OT Matt McCants, RB Maurice Jones-Drew, LB Nick Roach, LB Sio Moore, OG Tony Bergstrom inactive for Week 3.

Updating a previous report, Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 19, and is listed as questionable for Week 3.

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) did not practice Thursday, Sept. 11, after undergoing surgery on his right hand.

Footballguys view: We have concerns about Jones-Drew even if he was 100 percent healthy. It would be a surprise to see Jones-Drew play in Week 2. That means Darren McFadden is the starter with second-year back Latavius Murray as his primary backup.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew may be back soon    Thu Sep 11, 02:11 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) is not expected to miss much time, if any, after undergoing a procedure on his broken right hand, according to a source.

Footballguys view: So you can slow your roll on Darren McFadden or Marcel Reece. You have to have an alternative for him because we still don't know what the ETA is on his return. If he sits this week, which is the expectation, McFadden will get the bulk of the work against the Houston Texans, with Reece (or Latavius Murray) getting the scraps. McFadden would be no better than a RB3 or flex with some upside.

Raiders | Darren McFadden might start Week 2    Thu Sep 11, 01:04 AM

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden will get the start in Week 2 against the Houston Texans if RB Maurice Jones-Drew (hand) is unable to play.

Footballguys view: With Maurice Jones-Drew banged up, we'd expect nothing different. McFadden may get an increase in carries anyway if MJD plays, as the Raiders could decide to try and protect Jones-Drew from aggravating the injury. Marcel Reece might see some snaps, but he's not worth starting--McFadden would be a decent RB3 or flex start with some upside if MJD is out.

Raiders | Coach impressed with Darren McFadden    Mon Aug 18, 01:04 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden has performed well during training camp and shown some explosiveness during his runs, according to head coach Dennis Allen. 'I think Darren is probably running the ball as well as I've seen him run it since I've been here. I think he's probably more explosive than I've seen him since I've been here. I think part of that is that he's remained healthy throughout the offseason, throughout training camp. There haven't been any kind of nicks or nagging little deals that have slowed him down. So, hopefully that trend will continue because I've seen a lot of positives in what he's done in the running game,' Allen said.

Footballguys view: McFadden is the ultimate tease. He's incredibly talented but rarely healthy. We'll see how he works with Maurice Jones-Drew in the team's RBBC.

Raiders | RB battle rages on    Sat Aug 9, 12:17 AM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew started the preseason opener against the Minnesota Vikings Friday, Aug. 8, and he carried twice for 10 yards while also hauling in two passes for 14 yards. RB Darren McFadden had just one tote for 23 yards and he did not have any receptions.

Footballguys view: It is unlikely that there will be true lead back in this backfield while both McFadden and Jones-Drew are healthy, but we all know that story with McFadden. It's not the most attractive backfield to look for possible fantasy value this year, but if Jones-Drew can get some of his quickness back or McFadden can stay healthy, it will yield some value.

Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew motivated    Tue Aug 5, 05:17 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew is motivated by the competition he has with fellow RB Darren McFadden. Jones-Drew said he has to continue to push himself and strive for greatness in order to stay ahead of McFadden.

Footballguys view: Both backs will have decent-sized roles and might not even be solid flex plays until we see how the work will be split on a consistent basis. Jones-Drew is likely to gain some value during the season from a McFadden injury if the past is any indication, but second-year size/speed back Latavius Murray and a slimmed down Marcel Reece are both waiting in the wings.

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew was listed ahead of Darren McFadden on the depth chart Monday, Aug. 4.

Footballguys view: This is going to be a RBBC no matter who is the starter. Fantasy owners were already expecting Jones-Drew to be ahead of McFadden. Jones-Drew has a current ADP of RB35 (8.03) while McFadden has a current ADP of RB40 (9.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew is not listed as a punt or kick returner on the team's first depth chart even though he worked as a returner earlier in training camp.

Footballguys view: Jones-Drew is a seasoned veteran who should not be returning kicks or punts for the Raiders. He'll split time with Darren McFadden this season. Fantasy owners have Jones-Drew coming off the board at RB35 (8.02) and McFadden at RB40 (9.05) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Raiders | Unclear how carries will be divided     Mon Jul 14, 11:05 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Darren McFadden and RB Maurice Jones-Drew could struggle while splitting carries this season, according to ESPN.com's Paul Gutierrez. Gutierrez noted that both backs have traditionally performed better later in games, and splitting carries could prevent both backs from finding a rhythm.

Footballguys view: Both McFadden and Jones-Drew are not quite the players they used to be. Age and injuries have caught up to them, so expect the Raiders to split the carries (maybe somewhat evenly) to keep the duo fresh. McFadden has an ADP of RB40 (9.07) while Jones-Drew is coming off the board at RB35 (8.01) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Footballguys view: We're sure the Raiders want to run the ball a lot, but game scripts may not cooperate.   Raiders | Maurice Jones-Drew contemplated retirement    Sun Jun 29, 04:29 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Maurice Jones-Drew (foot) considered retiring after the 2013 season. 'For awhile, I was contemplating retirement because I just didn't feel like I had it anymore,' Jones-Drew said earlier this month. 'But that wasn't the case. My trainer helped me get back in shape and gain that foundation that I'd lost with the surgery.'

Footballguys view: Jones-Drew is competing with Darren McFadden to be the Raiders' starter this season. We'll see the battle unfold in training camp. McFadden may be the more explosive back at this point in their careers, but he's best used in a part-time role so he doesn't get worn down. We could see Jones-Drew start for the team but lose out on plenty of playing time in a RBBC.

Oakland Raiders RBs Darren McFadden and Maurice Jones-Drew are expected to compete for the starting running back job during training camp.

Footballguys view: Neither player is what they used to be, but this is an interesting battle to watch for fantasy owners looking for depth.
