Cardinals | Dennis Dixon signs    Tue Oct 7, 05:13 PM

The Arizona Cardinals signed free-agent QB Dennis Dixon (Bills) Tuesday, Oct. 7, with both QBs Carson Palmer (shoulder) and Drew Stanton (concussion) questionable for Week 6 against the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Nobody knows when Palmer is going to be back, but the team is hopeful it will be soon. Stanton will go through the NFL's protocol for dealing with concussions before he is able to return. Rookie Logan Thomas could start in Week 6 if Palmer and Stanton are down.

Eagles | Michael Vick could be roster casualty    Tue Jul 9, 07:11 PM

If Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly believes in Nick Foles and the long-term potential of Matt Barkley, Michael Vick could be cut.

Footballguys view: This is a battle that will take place during training camp. The team has former Oregon QB Dennis Dixon as fourth on the roster. If Foles wins the starting job the team will use the TEs more in the offense. If Vick wins the job then we'll see more inside zone rushing from the Eagles. We're certain some team would add him if he was on the open market.

Eagles | Chip Kelly wants competition at QB    Wed Apr 17, 08:44 AM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said Tuesday, April 16, following his first practice with the team he is in no rush to name a starting quarterback for the 2013 season. Kelly wants to create competition between QBs Michael Vick, Nick Foles and even Dennis Dixon. 'There wasn't one set guy that just went with the ones the entire day,' Kelly said. 'All those guys got an opportunity to roll through ... It's April 16, so we're not playing until next September. We're going to use the full available time for us to make a full evaluation of what it is. I think it fosters competition. I think those guys love competition. That's why they're in that position, and they know it.'

Footballguys view: We'll see the first team reps split evenly between Vick and Foles into training camp. The competition will continue in the preseason and we may not have an idea of who is leading until a week or two before the start of the regular season.

Eagles | Quarterbacks split first team reps at minicamp    Tue Apr 16, 02:57 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB's Michael Vick and Nick Foles both split time taking first team reps at the team's minicamp Tuesday, April 16, according to head coach Chip Kelly. Kelly said that QB Dennis Dixon even got a first team rep.

Footballguys view: Vick is the better fit for the offense but he'll need to beat out Foles for the starting job. We could see this split continue through training camp in August.

Eagles | Dennis Dixon contract details    Wed Feb 20, 03:28 PM

Eagles | Dennis Dixon expects to compete for starting job    Mon Feb 18, 04:05 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QB Dennis Dixon indicated that he expects to compete for the starting quarterback job next season. 'From my understanding, the job is open,' Dixon said in a conference call Monday. 'It's going to be a very competitive nature around here. It's pretty much open. May the best man win.'

Footballguys view: Dixon can compete for the starting job but he's most likely there to provide veteran depth and be sort of a player/coach for Chip Kelly. He's the only NFL QB with experience working in Kelly's high flying system.

Ravens | Were interested in bringing Dennis Dixon back    Thu Feb 14, 08:24 PM

Jeff Sperbeck, agent for Philadelphia Eagles QB Dennis Dixon, said the Baltimore Ravens were interested in re-signing Dixon this offseason but that Dixon wanted to play for his former college head coach Chip Kelly.

Footballguys view: It just makes sense for Dixon to reunite with Kelly. He ran the offense at a high level when he was with (then OC) Kelly at Oregon. Dixon will be able to showcase his skill set alongside Michael Vick and Nick Foles.

Eagles | Sign Dennis Dixon    Thu Feb 14, 02:48 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles signed QB Dennis Dixon (Ravens) to a two-year contract Thursday, Feb. 14. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: This move was obvious when Chip Kelly was hired as the Eagles head coach. Dixon worked under Kelly when he was the Offensive Coordinator at Oregon. He'll compete for the starting job with QB Michael Vick. Second-year QB Nick Foles could be traded as he doesn't really fit Kelly's system. The Chiefs could be interested in adding Foles this offseason.

Eagles | Have to wait to sign Dennis Dixon    Wed Feb 6, 02:54 PM

Updating a previous report, the Philadelphia Eagles are not allowed to sign Baltimore Ravens practice squad QB Dennis Dixon until Monday, Feb. 11, because the Ravens have exclusive rights to Dixon this week.

Footballguys view: We're expecting a deal on Monday. Dixon played under Chip Kelly when they were together at Oregon and knows the system.

Eagles | In talks with Dennis Dixon    Wed Feb 6, 07:42 AM

Updating a previous item, the Philadelphia Eagles are in contract talks with Baltimore Ravens practice squad QB Dennis Dixon, according to league sources. Dixon is familiar with head coach Chip Kelly's offense, having played for him in college. Per league rules pertaining to practice squad players, Dixon became a free agent immediately after Super Bowl XLVII and can sign a futures contract for 2013 with any team even though free agency doesn't begin until March.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't be surprised to see Dixon added to the Eagles in the near future. He worked under new Eagles head coach Chip Kelly while in college at Oregon. Kelly was the Offensive Coordinator when Dixon was the starting QB for the Ducks.

Eagles | Likely to pursue Dennis Dixon    Tue Feb 5, 05:28 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are likely to pursue Baltimore Ravens practice-squad QB Dennis Dixon. Dixon played for Eagles head coach Chip Kelly at Oregon, and has more experience running his offense than any other NFL QB.

Footballguys view: Kelly was the Offensive Coordinator at Oregon when Dixon was there. He'll be on the roster as soon as possible. Dixon will be in the mix for the starting job based on his experience alone.

Eagles | Dennis Dixon update     Thu Jan 31, 07:34 AM

Updating a previous item, there are strong indications that Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly won't waste too much time following Super Bowl XLVII in signing Baltimore Ravens practice squad QB Dennis Dixon. Dixon is the only NFL quarterback that knows Kelly's system inside-out.

Footballguys view: Dixon could at least function as a quasi-coach with the other quarterbacks in camp. If he's in good shape and sharply executes the playbook, he might even catch on as a backup.

Eagles | Michael Vick, Nick Foles unlikely the answer at QB    Wed Jan 30, 03:23 PM

Philadelphia Eagles QBs Michael Vick and Nick Foles are unlikely to be the answer at quarterback in new head coach Chip Kelly's spread offense attack. Foles could be trade bait if the team acquires Baltimore Ravens QB Dennis Dixon and he emerges as the starting quarterback.

Footballguys view: The Eagles are looking for an athletic QB who can make quick decisions based off timing routes. Dixon worked under Kelly (then Offensive Coordinator) in college at Oregon and was named Pac-10 Offensive Player of the year his senior season.

Eagles | Expected to pursue Dennis Dixon    Wed Jan 30, 02:11 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles are expected to pursue Baltimore Ravens practice squad QB Dennis Dixon after the Super Bowl. Dixon played for head coach Chip Kelly when he coached the University of Oregon.

Baltimore Ravens LB Terrell Suggs said practice squad QB Dennis Dixon has been playing the role of San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick during practice this week.

Footballguys view: The Ravens will have their hands full trying to contend with Kaepernick. Not only is he extremely athletic but he can make plays with his arm from the pocket as well.

The Baltimore Ravens are working out free-agent QBs Kyle Boller (Raiders), Dennis Dixon (Steelers) and Curtis Painter (Colts) Wednesday, April 18.

Footballguys view: Interesting to note they would consider bringing back Boller as he was a first-round bust for them years ago. The Ravens are looking for competition at the backup QB position. Currently they only have Tyrod Taylor as the primary backup behind Joe Flacco.

Ravens | Showing interest in Dennis Dixon    Fri Apr 13, 06:07 PM

Free-agent QB Dennis Dixon (Steelers) is scheduled to throw to free-agent WR Jerricho Cotchery (Steelers) during Cotchery's workout for the St. Louis Rams Wednesday, April 4.

Footballguys view: Dixon had only one free agent visit so far (Broncos) and isn't on anyone's short list. The Rams could use a guy like Dixon to play a backup role behind Sam Bradford. Cotchery and Dixon played together in Pittsburgh last year.

The Denver Broncos, who met with free-agent QB Dennis Dixon (Steelers) over the weekend, have yet to sign him to a contract as the team's backup quarterback.

Footballguys view: Dixon would battle with Caleb Hanie for the primary backup job behind Peyton Manning. His athleticism could also be used in any form of subpackage offense the Broncos would want to install.

Free-agent QB Dennis Dixon's (Steelers) agent said there have been a few teams to express interest in Dixon this offseason.

Steelers | Not expected to bring back Dennis Dixon    Sat Feb 25, 03:15 PM

The Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to re-sign impending free-agent QB Dennis Dixon this offseason because he likely will receive interest from other teams.

Steelers | Dennis Dixon helping team prepare    Wed Jan 4, 02:20 PM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Dennis Dixon has been simulating the style of play of Denver Broncos QB Tim Tebow during the team's practices this week as they prepare for their Wildcard playoff matchup Sunday, Jan. 8. Dixon, who played an option-like offense in college, has been giving the team valuable looks at that style of offense, which the Broncos employ.

Footballguys view: Dixon ran the spread option at Oregon with RBs Jonathan Stewart (Panthers) and Jeremiah Johnson (Broncos). He's the perfect QB to play the role of Tebow on the scout team.

Steelers | Charlie Batch likely the No. 2 QB     Tue Aug 30, 10:51 AM

Pittsburgh Steelers QB Charlie Batch is the likely candidate to be the team's backup quarterback following the injury to QB Byron Leftwich (arm). Head coach Mike Tomlin said Monday, Aug. 29, that a final determination on the new backup will not be made until after the final preseason game. Tomlin gave QB Ben Roethlisberger a day off practice Monday, Aug. 29, and split the repetitions between Batch and QB Dennis Dixon.

Footballguys view: Batch is the savvy veteran who won't give a game away with mistakes and poor throws. With the new rules for third-string QBs the Steelers could still bring Dixon on and off the field at their leisure as a subpackage QB if they want.

Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin said he will not decide whether QB Charlie Batch and QB Dennis Dixon will be the No. 2 quarterback until after the final preseason game.

Footballguys view: The Steelers like the athleticism of Dixon, but his play as a passer is inconsistent. Batch is a savvy veteran who could fill in as the starter adequately if called upon. With the new third QB rule the team could put Dixon there and still use him in Wildcat packages.
