Colts | Nate Davis released    Mon Aug 15, 02:57 PM

The Indianapolis Colts released QB Nate Davis Monday, Aug. 15.

Footballguys view: After bouncing around to several organizations it seems like Davis may have to pursue a football career in the Arena League or the UFL if he wants to keep playing.

Colts | Nate Davis agrees to two-year deal    Tue Jul 26, 02:38 PM

The Indianapolis Colts are signing unrestricted free-agent QB Nate Davis (Seahawks) to a two-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed. Davis was selected in the fifth-round of the 2009 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: The Colts are looking for competition behind Peyton Manning as Curtis Painter hasn't looked very impressive when under center. Manning is coming back from a recent neck surgery and should be limited in training camp and the preseason. Davis has a strong arm and good athleticism. However, he's bounced around the league during his short career and some believe he lacks the work ethic to succeed at the pro level.

Seahawks | Two released    Fri Mar 4, 01:15 AM

The Seattle Seahawks released TE Chris Baker and QB Nate Davis Thursday, March 3, reports The Associated Press.

Footballguys view: So much for Pete Carroll working with Nate Davis. His lack of work ethic seems to be the reason teams haven't gotten the most out of his natural ability.

Seahawks | Nate Davis signed to future deal    Wed Jan 12, 12:56 AM

The Seattle Seahawks signed free-agent QB Nate Davis (49ers) to a reserve/future contract Tuesday, Jan. 11, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com. The deal is pending a physical, according to two league sources.

Footballguys view: Nate Davis was a gunslinging quarterback at Ball State but he has yet to show what he can do at the pro level. Pete Carroll is always looking for untapped talent, so adding Davis to the roster makes a lot of sense.

49ers | Would like to sign Nate Davis to practice squad    Wed Sep 8, 10:43 AM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said the team would like to re-sign free-agent QB Nate Davis to their practice squad if he clears waivers, according to Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com.

Footballguys view: Davis has practice squad eligibility left and looked good at times this preseason. He was a developmental quarterback coming out of Ball State last year and still has some work to do before he can be relied on.

49ers | Nate Davis waived    Tue Sep 7, 10:26 AM

The San Francisco 49ers waived QB Nate Davis, according to Daniel Brown, of the San Jose Mercury News.

Footballguys view: Davis does have practice squad eligibility and that's where he could be headed. He struggled at times during the preseason but still has good upside if he can develop his raw skill set.

49ers | Nate Davis working hard at learning offense    Mon Aug 23, 02:49 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Nate Davis is working hard on getting more comfortable with the offense but is not sure if Davis devoted enough hours this offseason to work on learning the offense, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com. Davis has a learning disability and learns better when he watches film.

Footballguys view: Davis makes some plays here and there, but Singletary doesn't like his lack of command in the huddle. We'll see if this tough love approach motivates Davis to perform better.

49ers | David Carr looks to have locked down No. 2 job    Mon Aug 23, 02:49 PM

49ers | Mike Singletary critical of Nate Davis    Mon Aug 23, 10:46 AM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Nate Davis did not put in enough time learning the offense during the offseason, according to CBSSports.com. Davis struggled in the team's preseason game Sunday, Aug. 22. 'He's working his tail off to learn the system, but the offseason is when you work to get that done, and I'm not sure how much time he spent working on it,' Singletary said. 'He's got flash and a big arm, but you've got to learn how to play the position, control the huddle, get the guys in and out of plays.'

Footballguys view: Singletary takes a tough love approach with his players, and so far it's worked with guys like Vernon Davis. We'll see if Nate Davis can show better command of the huddle from here on out.

49ers | Ex-NFL Scout believes team is starting the wrong QB    Sat Jul 3, 03:50 PM

Matt Maiocco, from CSNBayArea.com, reports ex-NFL Scout Dave Razzano is not - and has never been - a believer in QB Alex Smith. "I had him rated as a non-starting player," Razzano said of Smith, whom the 49ers selected with the top overall pick in the 2005 draft. However, he believes that second-year QB Nate Davis can be very successful in this league. "When I evaluated him, I thought he was the same guy as Mark Sanchez," Razzano said. "I thought they were very similar. But you have to put a guy on the field and let him play. There's a reason Ball State was, like, 12-1 or 13-1 for the first time ever. And now they're back to winning two games. That guy was a heck of a quarterback."

Footballguys view: Smith showed enough as a starter last year to get another year as the starter this season. This most certainly is a make or break year for Smith, and the 49ers could move in a different direction if his play doesn't continue to improve. Nate Davis has a learning disability that has slowed his progress in learning the playbook, but there are plenty of people in the scouting community who are intrigued by his upside.

49ers | Would like Nate Davis to compete for No. 2 QB job    Tue Jun 22, 04:19 PM

San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye would like QB Nate Davis to push QB David Carr for the No. 2 quarterback job during training camp, according to CSNBayArea.com.

Footballguys view: Davis has decent upside if he can develop on his potential as a passer, but it's a little soon in our eyes for him to challenge for the job behind Alex Smith.

49ers | Nate Davis receives a lot of snaps Friday    Sat Jun 19, 05:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Nate Davis got a lot of reps during practice Friday, June 18, but things did not appear to run smoothly with him running the offense, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com. He needed assistance from offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye while calling out certain plays.

Footballguys view: Davis has a learning disability the 49ers knew about before he was drafted, and has reportedly been slow to pick up the offense. The 49ers would like to give him a lot of work to see if he can develop into a quality backup quarterback.

49ers | Nate Davis' progress going slow    Mon Jun 7, 04:45 PM

San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Nate Davis has made progress but it has not been as fast as the coaches would have liked, reports Matt Maiocco, of CSNBayArea.com. Singletary said Davis' learning disability may be a factor in the development. Davis said doing the plays during practice helps him get a better grip on the plays.

Footballguys view: Davis' learning disability was highly publicized before the draft last year, and it may indeed be a factor. However, going from Ball State to the NFL is a big jump and that may be a bigger reason why his progress is somewhat slow.

49ers | Nate Davis feeling more comfortable    Mon May 24, 03:07 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Nate Davis said he is feeling more comfortable with the offense and on the field this offseason, reports Phil Barber, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat. 'I'm a lot more comfortable in the huddle and on the field, you know, actually running the play, because I have more understanding of the play and what's going on,' Davis said.

Footballguys view: The 49ers have been bringing along Davis as a developmental quarterback in hopes of grooming him to be a starter one day. He's currently the third-string quarterback behind Alex Smith and David Carr going into training camp. He'll face competition for his roster spot from undrafted free agent Jarrett Brown (West Virginia), who impressed scouts at the Senior Bowl with his rocket arm and athleticism. Davis feels more comfortable this year, but still needs time to develop his pro game.

  49ers | Carr addition doesn't excite fans    Sun Mar 21, 05:21 PM

ProFootballWeekly.com reports Niners Nation has never really fully warmed up to QB Alex Smith, which led many to believe the addition of David Carr would generate a positive buzz. But the way we hear it, the consensus in the Bay Area is that Carr and Smith are pretty much cut from the same inconsistent cloth, and that few fans have gone out of their way to instantly anoint Carr as the new starter under center by any means.

Footballguys view: The 49ers seem content to roll with Smith and Carr as their quarterbacks this season, and should pass on a QB with both of their first-round picks. Maybe dismayed 49ers fans should pin their hopes on backup Nate Davis, because he's likely their only option outside of Smith and Carr.

49ers | N. Davis will not play this season    Wed Dec 23, 09:26 PM

CBSSports.com reports San Francisco 49ers head coach Mike Singletary said QB Nate Davis would not see any playing time this year. Singletary added that it would be different if QB Alex D. Smith was "a proven veteran player, but I want him to get every snap he can get to experience every situation he can and every lesson he can learn."

Footballguys view: History shows that the extra developmental time will likely help Davis. Alex Smith has played well enough to start for San Francisco next year, but Davis can still become the QB of the future.

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers QB Nate Davis is scheduled to play more than three quarters in the team's final preseason game Friday, Sept. 4.

Footballguys view: It will be the Nate Davis show in the 49ers preseason finale, and the team wants to give Davis more experience under center. Davis is a good leader on the field, can make plays with his feet, and is not afraid to challenge a defense deep. The team is hopeful that Davis can develop into a starting quarterback in a few years.

  49ers | N. Davis signed    Fri Jul 24, 05:19 PM

SF49ers.com reports the San Francisco 49ers have signed fifth-round draft choice QB Nate Davis to a four-year deal. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Davis certainly landed in a good spot for long-term opportunity. Shaun Hill is a winner, but not talented enough to ever be considered the answer, and this is Alex Smith's last chance to make good on being picked #1 overall in 2005. Davis could easily be competing to start going into 2011 training camp.

49ers | Close to completing deal with N. Davis    Mon Jul 13, 04:26 PM

Matt Maiocco, of The Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports the San Francisco 49ers are close to completing a deal with fifth-round draft choice QB Nate Davis.

Footballguys view: It will be interesting to see the development of Nate Davis in the NFL. He draft stock slid quicker than Andy Reid on a greased up slide and slide because of a terrible end to his college season. Scouts questioned his level of competition coming out of Ball State, and they also wondered if he could digest a complex play book. He shouldn't be in the running for the starting job this season, but if he reaches his potential he could be the QB of the future for the team.
