San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy will not play in the Week 18 game, and QB Sam Darnold will be the starting quarterback for the game, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

Footballguys view: Darnold is a more-than-capable backup who can start and thrive in Shanahan's system. The 49ers are home for a season finale matchup against the Rams in Week 18.

49ers | Sam Darnold named backup    Thu Aug 24, 10:27 AM

San Francisco 49ers QB Sam Darnold was named backup quarterback Thursday, Aug. 24.

Footballguys view: Darnold fits what HC Kyle Shanahan wants from his quarterback. He works within the system and will take shots that are set up for him by the design of the offense. Darnold will hold a clipboard for most of the season unless starting QB Brock Purdy is banged up.

49ers | Sam Darnold beats out Trey Lance    Wed Aug 23, 02:56 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Sam Darnold is set to be named the team's No. 2 quarterback and the Niners will explore their options with QB Trey Lance, per sources on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Darnold has been impressive in camp and the preseason with the 49ers, and this coaching staff has coveted his ability for quite some time. Now, the question becomes what do they do with Lance. The no.3 overall pick has flashed a bit, but he lost the starting job to a seventh-round pick (Brock Purdy) and now can't beat out a guy in Darnold who has been an average-at-best starter with a few different teams. We'll see if the 49ers can find some team interested in dealing for Lance.

49ers | QB Purdy on Track for Opener    Thu Jul 13, 03:45 PM

Matt Maiocco, from NBC Sports Bay Area said San Francisco 49ers QB Brock Purdy 's rehab is on schedule, and he is on track to start the season opener, having experienced no setbacks. The team hopes that Purdy can return at some point late in training camp.

Footballguys view: We doubt that Purdy gets much if any action in the preseason. Things have been on track with his progress, and Purdy being out there as the starter in Week 1 of the regular season is not outlandish to project. That means the 49ers will get a lot of time to see who wins the primary backup job between Sam Darnold and Trey Lance.

49ers | QB Darnold the Edge for no.2 Job?    Thu Jun 22, 03:00 PM

As a guest on the Pat McAfee Show, ESPN's Adam Schefter said that he believes San Francisco 49ers QB Sam Darnold "has the edge going into camp" over QB Trey Lance.

Footballguys view: Kyle Shanahan has loved Darnold for some time, and reports indicated he almost traded for him when Darnold's time with the Jets was done years ago. Now, Shanahan has Darnold, and some around the team say he's flourishing as a passer in this offense. We'll see come training camp. Lance is a better rusher than Darnold by far, but he's struggled in the brief time he's been on the field with the 49ers. Darnold has the experience edge and could be the primary backup to starting QB Brock Purdy.

49ers | Trey Lance could reclaim starting job    Tue Mar 28, 01:59 PM

San Francisco 49ers QB Trey Lance is expected to share first-team reps with Sam Darnold this offseason while Brock Purdy recovers from elbow surgery, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. Per Shanahan, Lance has 'a chance' to regain the starting job, but it will be harder for him to do so than it was at the start of last season.'I think it's going to be harder for him to (win the starting QB job). Brock played eight games. Trey had that job going into last season and if he would've played eight games like that, no one else would've been able to come in and beat him out. But with Brock being hurt, it does open him up. It does give him a chance. .. I don't know how Brock's going to come back. I don't know exactly when he's going to come back. So, I don't have an exact answer for that. But right now, because he is hurt, it's nice to focus on Trey, it's nice to focus on Sam and see how they do at OTAs and - most likely - see how they're playing leading into training camp because I think it will take some time for Brock,' Shanahan told reporters at the league's annual meeting.

Panthers | Sam Darnold struggles in Week 18    Sun Jan 8, 03:54 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold went 5-for-15 for 43 yards, zero touchdowns and two interceptions against the New Orleans Saints in Week 18. He also rushed for 32 yards on six carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Darnold spent most of the 2022 season on Injured Reserve, but he did get a chance at the end of the year to start a few games. Darnold did not finish the season strong (to say the least), and he'll be looking at a different landing spot in 2023. We should see a few teams look at Darnold as a veteran reserve option in free agency.

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold went 15-for-22 for 250 yards and one touchdown against the Detroit Lions in Week 16. He also rushed for 19 yards and one touchdown on six carries during the game.

Footballguys view: Darnold was a fantasy hit in an unlikely game to come through because the Panthers running backs dominated the Lions. The Panthers are still alive in the NFC South race with a showdown at Tampa Bay up next week, and Darnold has some value as a 2QB/Superflex option.

Panthers | Sam Darnold to get at least one more start    Mon Dec 19, 01:49 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold 'made some good throws' in Week 15 against the Pittsburgh Steelers and will make another start in Week 16 versus the Detroit Lions, according to interim head coach Steve Wilks.

Footballguys view: The Panthers fell against the Steelers, but Darnold is only expected to be a game manager for them. That's what he'll do against the Lions, and anytime he's out there as the starter for the Panthers in 2022. They have a low-volume passing game, so Darnold is not much of a fantasy option in Week 16.

Panthers | Opportunity for Sam Darnold?    Wed Dec 7, 10:01 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold could have 'an extended run' as the staring quarterback to end the season, according to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN.com, and Fowler believes Darnold could remain with Carolina next year as a bridge quarterback for a player selected in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: Darnold led the Panthers to a win in his first start against the Broncos a couple of weeks ago. The Panthers had a bye week, and now they're back to play against the Seahawks. Darnold has an opportunity in front of him, especially because the Panthers moved on from QB Baker Mayfield. We'll see if he takes advantage of the starts he's getting over the last few weeks of the 2022 season.

Panthers | Sam Darnold to start Week 14    Tue Nov 29, 08:12 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold will start in Week 14 after the team's bye, head coach Steve Wilks said on Sunday, Nov. 27.

Footballguys view: The Panthers beat the Broncos with Darnold under center last week. Now, beating the Broncos is not difficult, but Darnold didn't make many mistakes as the starter. He'll continue to get the starting nod so long as he stays healthy and the Panthers are winning.

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold was named as the team's starting quarterback for Week 12 against the Denver Broncos on Tuesday, Nov. 22.

Footballguys view: This was in the works as Baker Mayfield continued to struggle as the Panthers' starter. Darnold is facing a Broncos defense that can get after the quarterback. This is good news for WR D.J. Moore, who the team insists will get the ball to him more.

Panthers | Carolina to decide QB Wednesday    Tue Nov 22, 01:20 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield has not been confirmed to start in Week 12 against the Denver Broncos, although interim head coach Steve Wilks said Monday, Nov. 21 that he did not consider turning to QB Sam Darnold at any point during the Week 11 game against the Baltimore Ravens. 'It's too early to say,' Wilks said. 'We gotta evaluate the tape and then from there, I'll make a decision.' Wilks said a QB will be named Wednesday, Nov. 23.

Footballguys view: We'll see what the Panthers do as they prepare for the Broncos in Week 12. Darnold would make the most sense as the team struggled almost all the time with Mayfield in at quarterback. Fantasy GMs are interested in this decision more for the rest of the players on offense since nobody should be starting a Panthers quarterback.

Panthers | PJ Walker to remain starter?    Fri Nov 11, 12:28 PM

Carolina Panthers QB PJ Walker is expected to remain the starter in Week 11 against the Baltimore Ravens but will still be evaluated with QB Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold in the mix, according to head coach Steve Wilks on Friday, Nov. 11.

Footballguys view: Walker has been up-and-down as the Panthers' starter over the last few games. So long as the team is winning, like they did on Thursday night against the Falcons, Walker should keep his starting job. If/when he struggles, the team could easily turn to Mayfield or Darnold again as the starter.

Panthers | Sam Darnold activated    Mon Nov 7, 08:50 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (shoulder) was activated from the Reserve/Injured list, and he'll play some to evaluate him for next season.

Footballguys view: The Panthers had until Tuesday to officially activate Darnold since they opened up his 21-day window to do so a couple of weeks ago. P.J. Walker was replaced by Baker Mayfield on Sunday, and the Panthers could see what Darnold can do as the starter. We'll see how long it takes Darnold to get back to speed, and how long it will be before he gets a chance to start.

Panthers | Sam Darnold close to 100 percent    Wed Nov 2, 03:32 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (shoulder) said he is nearly fully recovered from his shoulder injury but not sure what the team has planned for him for the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: Panthers interim coach Steve Wilks said it is "tough to say" when Darnold will be activated from injured reserve. The Panthers have about a week to activate Darnold from IR or they must shut him down for the rest of the season. They have P.J. Walker as the starter, and Baker Mayfield is now serving as the backup. That means Darnold may be shut down for the rest of 2022 and look for a new team in 2023.

Panthers | Sam Darnold designated for return    Wed Oct 19, 01:05 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (shoulder) was designated to return from injured reserve on Wednesday, Oct. 19, opening his 21-day window to be activated.

Footballguys view: A couple of weeks ago, Darnold was supposedly nowhere close to a return. After one week of P.J. Walker starting, Darnold comes off Injured Reserve. The Panthers now have three weeks to make Darnold active. When that happens, he'll likely be reinserted as the starter.

Panthers | Sam Darnold might be cleared soon    Tue Oct 18, 01:41 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (shoulder) might be cleared to practice this week, interim head coach Steve Wilks said Monday, Oct. 17, but the coach said he doesn't what that it means for his current quarterback rotation.

Footballguys view: At this time, P.J. Walker is the Panthers' starter. That's not a great option for the team, and while regular starter Baker Mayfield (ankle) misses time perhaps Darnold would be an option. We'll see when he's cleared and what he looks like in practice before we look to see if Darnold is actually going to start for the Panthers again.

Panthers | Sam Darnold not close    Mon Oct 3, 11:27 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (ankle) is eligible to come off the Reserve/Injured list, but he's not close to returning from a high-ankle sprain.

Footballguys view: Darnold is now eligible to come off Injured Reserve, but it may be several more weeks before he's available to return. Baker Mayfield has been flat-out awful during his start with the Panthers. Things are so bad, fans are clamoring for a potential Darnold return. It sounds like that is still way off in the distance.

Panthers | Sam Darnold placed on IR    Thu Sep 1, 12:17 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (ankle) was placed on the injured reserve list Thursday, Sept. 1.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have Baker Mayfield as their starter, and Darnold is in line to be the primary backup when healthy. Now that he's on IR, Darnold will be forced to miss the first four games of the season. The high-ankle sprain was expected to take about a month to heal, so Darnold should be good to go when he's eligible to come off IR.

Panthers | Sam Darnold out 4-6 weeks    Sat Aug 27, 05:12 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (ankle) is expected to miss 4-6 weeks due to a high-ankle sprain he suffered during the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills.

Footballguys view: PJ Walker isn't going anywhere after a preseason that included a head-scratching start that invited speculation of creating a trade market for the quarterback that was battling rookie Matt Corral to be third on the depth chart. Now Walker will back up Baker Mayfield in the season opener vs. Cleveland, and remain the backup for at least a few games after that.

Panthers | Sam Darnold out 4-6 weeks    Sat Aug 27, 01:39 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (ankle) is expected to miss four to six weeks with a high ankle sprain, per sources on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Footballguys view: Darnold already lost the starting job to Baker Mayfield, so he was going to be the primary backup to start the regular season. Now, those duties will go to P.J. Walker for the first month or so. When Darnold returns, he should be the no.2 behind Mayfield again.

Panthers | Likely high-ankle sprain for Sam Darnold    Fri Aug 26, 11:11 PM

Updating a previous report, Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold (ankle) was carted off the field after suffering an apparent high ankle sprain against the Buffalo Bills on Friday, Aug. 26. Darnold is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Saturday, Aug. 27.

Footballguys view: A high-ankle sprain could knock Darnold out of action for quite a few weeks. Darnold is the no.2 quarterback behind starter Baker Mayfield. In 2022, Darnold counts for a fully guaranteed $18.8 million on the salary cap. If he has to miss time due to this injury, and he'll likely be considered week-to-week, the Panthers can turn to veteran P.J. Walker as the primary backup to Mayfield.

Panthers | Baker Mayfield, Sam Darnold split reps in opener    Sat Aug 13, 07:24 PM

Carolina Panthers QBs Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold both worked with the first-team offense Saturday, Aug. 13, against the Washington Commanders. Mayfield completed 4-of-7 passes for 45 yards, and Darnold completed 2-of-3 passes for 16 yards and a touchdown.

Footballguys view: Both quarterbacks played reasonably well, which hopefully bodes well for the prospects of the Panthers passing game improvement this season. Mayfield should be considered the favorite, but Darnold doing enough to stay in the conversation and keep the team splitting first team reps is a good sign for his long term future.

Panthers | Baker Mayfield will start preseason opener    Sat Aug 13, 10:41 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield will start the team's first preseason game against the Washington Commanders Saturday, Aug. 13, according to a source. He is expected to play during the first offensive series, with QB Sam Darnold taking over during the second series. However, QBs P.J. Walker and Matt Corral are slated to see the bulk of the action during the game. Head coach Matt Rhule said earlier in the week that each quarterback should see approximately six to eight plays.

Footballguys view: Mayfield is competing with Sam Darnold for the starting job. We think he wins the job...and so does everybody else. However, the Panthers insist no decision has been made. They traded for Mayfield, and he's simply better than Darnold. Expect a starter to be announced sometime after the second preseason game.

Panthers | Top two QBs to play in preseason game    Wed Aug 10, 08:04 PM

Carolina Panthers QB Baker Mayfield and QB Sam Darnold will both receive playing time during the first preseason game, according to head coach Matt Rhule.

Footballguys view: The starting quarterback has not yet been named in Carolina, but most people can expect Mayfield to get the nod. If/when Mayfield is announced as the starter, Darnold is unlikely to be dealt. At least, that's what the Panthers keep insisting on. Neither one is a great option for fantasy purposes.

Panthers | Carolina isn't shopping Sam Darnold    Mon Aug 8, 11:58 AM

Carolina Panthers QB Sam Darnold is not being shopped on the trade market, according to SiriusXM NFL Radio's Alex Marvez on Monday, Aug. 8.

Footballguys view: The 'inside track' to win the starting job is Baker Mayfield. That should be a shock to no one as the team traded for Mayfield earlier this offseason because they wanted an upgrade from Darnold. If/when Darnold loses the starting spot, the Panthers don't seem to be interested in seeing what they could get for him.

Panthers | Carolina won't rush to name QB    Sat Aug 6, 02:30 PM

The Carolina Panthers don't plan to name their starting quarterback until after the Friday, Aug. 19 preseason game, but could wait longer if none of the candidates separate themselves, according to head coach Matt Rhule on Saturday, Aug. 6. The top two candidates for the job are QBs Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold.

Footballguys view: Mayfield versus Darnold isn't a great card, but it's what the Panthers have. After making the move to acquire Mayfield via trade from the Browns, it would be a bit of a surprise if he doesn't end up winning the job. Whoever loses will be the primary backup with rookie Matt Corral working as a developmental quarterback.

Panthers | QBs splitting first-team reps    Wed Jul 27, 01:51 PM

Carolina Panthers QBs Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield are splitting first-team reps to starting training camp, per head coach Matt Rhule. Darnold took all first-team reps on Wednesday, July 27, and Mayfield will take all first-team reps on Thursday, July 28. This approach is expected to continue for the foreseeable future.

Footballguys view: The team insists that Mayfield is competing with Darnold, but many (including us) expect the winner to be Mayfield. It may not take long for this competition to be called, and for Mayfield to come out on top. If/when Mayfield is named the starter, the Panthers seem like they'll keep Darnold on the roster as the primary backup. Neither is a great option or Fantasy GMs in 2022.

Carolina Panthers QBs Baker Mayfield and Sam Darnold will take part in an open competition for the starting job, general manager Scott Fitterer said on Tuesday, July 12.

Footballguys view: They keep saying that and promoting the fact they are not getting rid of Sam Darnold. However, with the trade for Mayfield, we can't imagine him not starting for the Panthers in Week 1. We'll see this competition shake out in training camp and the preseason, but we are putting our chips on Mayfield as the top guy.

Seahawks | Unlikely to Trade for QB Darnold    Sat Jul 9, 12:25 PM

Michael Bumpus, from Seattle Sports 710 AM, reports the Seattle Seahawks are unlikely to trade the Carolina Panthers for QB Sam Darnold.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks were rumored to be interested in QB Baker Mayfield, but the Panthers beat them to the punch and traded for him earlier this month. Now, the Panthers have Darnold as a high-priced backup and seem intent on having a quarterback competition in training camp. Seattle currently has Geno Smith as their top passer, but Drew Lock should get a chance to prove he should be the starter in training camp and the preseason.
