Rams | Not expected to bring back Kenneth Darby    Sun May 8, 06:48 PM

The St. Louis Rams are not expected to re-sign free-agent RB Kenneth Darby this offseason.

Footballguys view: The team has been looking for an adequate backup behind star RB Steven Jackson. Keith Toston is likely not the answer, so expect the Rams to be very active in free agency to fill that hole on their roster. An undrafted back like Darren Evans may interest the team.

Rams | Kenneth Darby works with starters Wednesday    Thu Sep 30, 01:09 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Kenneth Darby spent most of his time working with the first-team offense during practice Wednesday, Sept. 29, reports Bill Coats, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. RB Keith Toston also saw some snaps with the starters during practice.

Footballguys view: If Steven Jackson can't play the Rams would use a RBBC with both Darby and Toston. Darby is the more complete back, while Toston is a good change of pace runner who is effective in space.

Rams | Steven Jackson not expected to play much in preseason    Fri Aug 13, 01:36 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson is not expected to play much at all in the preseason this year, according to The Associated Press.

Footballguys view: There's no need to get Jackson a ton of work in the preseason. He's a seasoned veteran who is coming off back surgery in April and the team's biggest weapon. In the meantime Kenneth Darby, Chris Ogbonnaya, and undrafted rookie Keith Toston will compete to be the backup behind Jackson.

Rams | Backup RB situation remains worrisome    Sat Jul 3, 03:14 PM

Dan Arkush, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports the Rams have many concerns after coming off a one-win season in 2009. According to their sources, the team is concerned about the lack of quality depth behind RB Steven Jackson. A team source told them "Spags (Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo) said it was no big deal (not drafting a RB), but Jackson is coming off (April 15) back surgery, and you just never know when running backs might hit that wall. It's been two years now that they've had to run Jackson to death, and it just seems very puzzling that they haven't made more of an effort to find a decent backup."

Footballguys view: The Rams currently have Kenneth Darby, Chris Ogbonnaya, and undrafted rookie free agent Keith Toston (Oklahoma State) behind Jackson. Toston may be the one to watch in this battle of the backups. Our very own Cecil Lammey saw Toston up close during the week of practice for the Shrine Game earlier this year in Orlando and came away impressed. Toston doesn't have the skill set to be a feature back, but is explosive and elusive enough to be a fine complementary back.

Rams | Competition for #2 RB job up for grabs?    Sun May 23, 03:27 PM

Howard Balzer, from the St. Louis Globe-Democrat, reports with Steven Jackson not participating in the OTAs, Kenneth Darby and Chris Ogbonnaya are the first two backs getting carries, followed by undrafted free agent Keith Toston. Ogbonnaya showed some flashes when he got the opportunity at the end of last season, with 11 carries for 50 yards and one 19-yard reception, and could be a surprise contender for the backup spot behind Jackson if no other additions occur. The personnel department remains on the lookout for a back, and former Eagles runner Brian Westbrook is expected to make a decision this week on his next team. When head coach Steve Spagnuolo was asked if he thought Ogbonnaya has the ability to be a No. 2 back, he said, "Well, they should all think that way. Any back that comes in here should be competing for that, so we'll wait and see what happens."

Footballguys view: That's not exactly a ringing endorsement for the second-year running back, and according to the report there are team insiders who believe that Jackson's backup is not currently on the roster.

  Rams | Jackson a game-time decision     Fri Dec 18, 05:07 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson (back, illness) did not participate in practice Friday, Dec. 18. He is listed as questionable for Week 15 and will be a game-time decision. If he is not able to play, RBs Kenneth Darby and Samkon Gado will share carries while RB Chris Ogbonnaya could also see some carries.

Footballguys view: We wouldn't advise Jackson as anything more than a low-end RB2 anyway, so take a longer look at other options while his status is up in the air.

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports that RB Kenneth Darby has supplanted Samkon Gado as the backup to Steven Jackson. Darby had worked as the #2 in practice the previous week and even got in the game vs. the Redskins in some two RB sets.

Footballguys view: We still think the Rams will employ a committee if Jackson misses any time this season.

Rams | Darby appears to be doubtful for Thursday    Wed Aug 26, 05:28 PM

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams RB Kenneth Darby (knee) appears to be doubtful for the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 27, because of a swollen knee.

Footballguys view: Kenneth Darby is certainly on the roster bubble, and has lost his position on the depth chart to Samkon Gado and Antonio Pittman. The Rams may even decide to keep rookie Chris Ogbonnaya if Darby can't get healthy.

Rams | Darby misses practice Sunday    Sun Aug 23, 10:20 PM

CBSSports.com reports St. Louis Rams RB Kenneth Darby (knee) missed the team's practice Sunday, Aug. 23, with a sprained knee and is day-to-day.

Footballguys view: If his injury keeps him sidelined for too long he could lose his roster spot to rookie RB Chris Ogbonnaya.

Rams | Gado passes Darby on the depth chart    Mon Aug 17, 02:47 PM

Bill Coats, from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports RB Samkon Gado, who had a big game vs. the Jets, took some snaps with the No. 1 offense. Antonio Pittman, who also had a nice outing Friday, and Gado shared second-team reps. Kenneth Darby, who struggled in the preseason opener, spent most of his time with the third unit.

Footballguys view: Darby had a forgettable game against the Jets, but Gado busted off a 77-yard touchdown run. Steven Jackson owners will have to wait until the end of preseason for a clear backup to emerge, but we don't advise wasting a roster spot on any of these players.

Rams | Darby may have lost ground Friday    Sun Aug 16, 07:48 PM

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams RB Kenneth Darby may have lost ground Friday, Aug. 14, in his bid to be the team's No. 2 running back. Darby gained 16 yards on six carries in the preseason game, with a dropped pass and a couple of missed blitz pickups.

Rams | Darby currently has lead for No. 2 RB job    Tue Jul 28, 08:07 PM

Mike Sando, of ESPN.com, reports St. Louis Rams offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said RB Kenneth Darby is currently the favorite for the team's No. 2 running back job.

Footballguys view: This is good news for anyone thinking of taking Steven Jackson in the first round. Jackson has suffered significant injuries the last two seasons, so you'll probably want to handcuff him to his backup, but it hasn't been clear who that backup will be. If Darby can seize the job, you should be able to get him with a last round pick. He showed good skills as a pass catcher and a good burst in limited action last year.

Rams | A. Pittman, Darby top candidates for backup job    Thu Jun 11, 12:53 PM

Bill Coats, of St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Rams RB Antonio Pittman and RB Kenneth Darby are the top candidate for the team's primary backup running back job.

Footballguys view: The Rams traded RB/FB Brian Leonard to the Bengals so that leaves Darby and Pittman as the primary backups to RB Steven Jackson. Coach Steve Spagnuolo likes what he sees so far. "I think both of the guys are picking up the system pretty well. ... I think both add certain things. I'm real anxious to see the competition when they put the pads on." Pittman is a slashing RB that does most of his damage between the tackles, but he does have deceptive speed when he gets to the open field. Darby runs hard, consistently picks up yards after contact, and is a good receiver out of the backfield. This competition won't be decided until the end of training camp.

Rams | Darby in lead for backup RB role    Tue Jun 9, 11:41 PM

Jim Thomas, of the St. Louis Post Dispatch, reports that while there is no clear-cut backup to starting running back Steven Jackson, Kenneth Darby looks like the leading contender for the spot.

Footballguys view: Darby looked more like the back he was in his junior year at Alabama last year, instead of the disappointing player he was in his senior year, causing him to fall all the way to the 7th round. He flashed a good burst as a receiver out of the backfield, and he's the best the choice if you feel forced to handcuff someone to Jackson this year as an injury hedge.

Rams | S. Jackson impressed with backup backs    Fri Jun 5, 01:17 PM

St. Louis Rams RB Steven Jackson said he has been impressed with backup RBs Kenneth Darby and Antonio Pittman.

Footballguys view: 'I think all the guys are able to run routes and it really allows us to set up different matchups. We can go two backs on the field sometimes,' Jackson said. Antonio Pittman was rated as high as the #2 RB by some in the scouting community when he came out of college in 2007. While not the biggest runner he has deceptive strength between the tackles and has the agility and balance to run through arm tackles consistently. Kenneth Darby is an efficient runner that has good instincts and the quick burst to get through small holes. Both Darby and Pittman started their careers elsewhere but so far they've been fairly impressive during their time in St. Louis. The Rams want a run-heavy offense in 2009 featuring Steven Jackson, and his backup could see spot duty when Jackson needs a breather.
