San Francisco 49ers FS C.J. Spillman lined up as the starting free safety in training camp practice Sunday, July 28, but FS Eric Reid reportedly stood out with the second-team defense. FS Craig Dahl had been working with the first-team defense, but he had a rough practice Saturday, July 27. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio has said the starting free safety job is up for grabs among Dahl, Reid, Spillman and FS Trenton Robinson.

San Francisco 49ers FS Craig Dahl said that when he was with the St. Louis Rams last year, they had a detailed scouting report on the San Fran offense that turned out to be quite successful. 'We had a few tips off of film that we were able to differentiate between run and pass early,' Dahl said. 'It was a few different things. Some different personnel and alignment stuff really were the big keys, as far as our giveaways.'
