Broncos | Peyton Manning sets new TD mark Mon Oct 7, 01:46 AM
Denver Broncos QB Peyton Manning set a new touchdown record through five games when he threw his 19th touchdown pass of the season to TE Julius Thomas. Manning broke the previous record of 18, set by former Minnesota Vikings QB Daunte Culpepper in 2004. Manning now has 20 touchdowns through five games.
Footballguys view: Manning is on an insane level right now. The Broncos are making it look easy offensively as multiple options are open on each play. Manning is making history every week, and he could own many single season records by the end of the year. |

Footballguys view: He'll be getting his roll on somewhere on the golf course during his retirement. |

49ers | Not ruling out Daunte Culpepper Wed Aug 17, 12:50 AM
San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh said Tuesday, Aug. 16, that even though the team did not offer QB Daunte Culpepper after his workout, that option is still not off the table. 'I wouldn't rule that out,' Harbaugh said.
Footballguys view: If Culpepper is signed, that's an indictment of either one or both of the current QBs ability to start this year by the coaches. |

Free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper (Lions) worked out for the San Francisco 49ers Monday, Aug. 15, but did not sign a contract.

49ers | Expected to sign Daunte Culpepper Mon Aug 15, 03:03 PM
Updating a previous report, the San Francisco 49ers are expected to sign free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper (Lions) to a one-year contract.
Footballguys view: We can't wait to see CPepp get his roll on for the 49ers. Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick were not impressive in their preseason debut, thus the team felt a need to look at the veteran Culpepper. |

49ers | Daunte Culpepper to work out Mon Aug 15, 09:55 AM
The San Francisco 49ers will work out free-agent QB Daunte Culpepper (Lions) Monday, Aug. 15.
Footballguys view: The 49ers QBs combined for a whopping 11 completions on 26 attempts with 0 touchdowns and 2 interceptions in their preseason game against the Saints this weekend. Alex Smith looked bad and rookie Colin Kaepernick looked worse. We'll give the rookie a break but Smith should play better than that at this point in his career. The starting job is wide open according to 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh, but Culpepper could be added to the mix soon. CPepp hasn't gotten his roll on in the NFL since a stint with the Lions in 2009. |

Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper is unlikely to return to the team in 2010. The Lions will likely bring in a veteran quarterback to compete for the No. 2 quarterback job next season.

Lions | Only factor for deciding QB is winning Mon Dec 28, 10:26 PM
Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz said the only factor for deciding his starting quarterback for Week 17 is winning. Schwartz has not said whether QB Drew Stanton or QB Daunte Culpepper would start the game. Schwartz said, "So the decisions we'll make will be based on where we are offensively, what gives us the best chance to win this game. It won't have anything to do with finding out about players further on down the line and everything else. That hasn't been part of the M.O. from the beginning here, and it won't be."
Footballguys view: If Schwartz is trying to pick the QB that gives the Lions the best chance of winning, we're not sure how that works with two QBs who seem to give the team no chance of coming out on top. |

Tom Kowalski, of MLive.com, reports Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has named QB Daunte Culpepper as the starting quarterback for Week 14.
Footballguys view: Culpepper has been chomping at the bit to get onto the playing field, and the veteran should look to hook up with Calvin Johnson the same way he hooked up with Randy Moss when they played for the Vikings. Lions | Culpepper upset about not starting Week 12 Fri Nov 27, 12:08 PM
Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper was upset that the Lions started QB Matthew Stafford (shoulder) in Week 12 instead of him. Culpepper initially did not warm up before the game but eventually went on the field after an animated conversation with general manager Martin Mayhew. 'Daunte's a competitor. He wants to be out there. We want backups that want to be out there. I'd much rather have that situation with Daunte than a guy that just tips his cap and says, 'Fine.' He still views himself as a starting quarterback, and rightfully so. But Matt's our starter, and when he's healthy enough, he'll be out there,' head coach Jim Schwartz said.

Lions | Stafford says season isn't in jeopardy Mon Oct 19, 07:21 PM
Nicholas J. Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports that Lions QB Matthew Stafford said no one has told him his season is in jeopardy because of possible surgery on his injured knee. "That's nothing that anybody's telling me, for sure," Stafford said. "Where these rumors come from is beyond me. ... I just don't know where any of this is coming from - where I'm supposed to be and who I'm meeting with an all that. That's just all false."
Footballguys view: On the other hand, head coach Jim Schwartz wouldn't commit to Stafford returning to practice next week, or the week after, or the week after that. Stafford apparently had swelling after he tried to practice last Wednesday. Drew Stanton is a good pre-emptive pickup in start 2 QB leagues right now. |

Tim Twentyman, of The Detroit News, reports Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Scott Linehan said he will not necessarily change his play calling if QB Daunte Culpepper starts in Week 5. Linehan said he would call more plays Culpepper were comfortable with during the game.
Footballguys view: Culpepper is a savvy veteran, so there's no need to limit the playbook if gets to start this week against the Steelers. The Lions should be forced to abandon the running game early against a tough Pittsburgh D, and that means more opportunity for CPepp and the rest of the passing game. |

Clayton thinks the Lions will use Daunte Culpepper for the next two games and bring back Stafford after their week 7 bye.

Carlos Monarrez, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions QB Daunte Culpepper issued a statement Tuesday, Sept. 8, in support of head coach Jim Schwartz's decision to start QB Matthew Stafford. Lions | Locker room somber following Stafford announcement? Tue Sep 8, 01:25 PM
Tom Kowalski, of Mlive.com, reports there was a bittersweet feeling in the Detroit Lions' locker room following the team's decision to start QB Matthew Stafford in Week 1. Although players recognize Stafford's talent and potential, the veterans have grown fond of QB Daunte Culpepper and respect the strides he made throughout the offseason. The veterans felt bad for Culpepper that he did not win the starting job.
Footballguys view: Culpepper proved that he can still play at a fairly high level in this league, but now will have to wait for another opportunity. Stafford will have a long leash, but if the rookie struggles we could hear some rumblings from within the lockerroom fairly quickly. |

Lions | Fair performance from Stafford could clinch starting job Thu Sep 3, 07:44 PM
Brian VanOchten, of the Grand Rapids Press, believes that a fair performance from QB Matthew Stafford will clinch the Lions starting QB job. His competitor, Daunte Culpepper, is sidelined after having to get eight stitches in foot. VanOchten thinks it would be a "huge upset" if Stafford doesn't win the job.
Footballguys view: The Lions early schedule includes Chicago, Minnesota, Pittsburgh, Washington, and two of the hottest preseason defenses, Green Bay and New Orleans. Stafford will certainly make his share of rookie mistakes in those games, but starting from week 1 on could make the Lions offense more viable by the second half of the season. Footballguys view: We expected this kind of talk from the moment Stafford was drafted. He also looked for the huge gain when the play broke down at Georgia, and he has the best jumpball receiver in the league to go after his 60-yard bombs off of his back foot on the run. Johnson could put up Randy Moss-type numbers once Stafford is up to speed. |
