Patriots | Two TEs expected to ready for season    Sun Jul 3, 01:26 PM

New England Patriots TEs Alge Crumpler (shoulder) and Aaron Hernandez (hip) are expected to be ready for the start of the regular season after undergoing offseason surgeries.

Footballguys view: Crumpler should stick around because of his ability as a blocker, while Hernandez should once again be used frequently in the passing game because of he creates mismatches every time he's on the field.

Mike Reiss, from ESPNBoston.com, believes the Patriots will keep four tight ends on the final roster. Aaron Hernandez, Rob Gronkowski, Alge Crumpler, and rookie Lee Smith should all make it past the cuts in training camp.

Footballguys view: Smith was added in the draft because of his blocking ability and should be the eventual replacement for Crumpler.

Patriots | Offense has changed in 2010    Wed Oct 6, 04:35 AM

If the New England Patriots trade WR Randy Moss to the Minnesota Vikings, they would create a huge void at receiver, reports Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com. Moss has played in 196 out of 248 snaps for the team this year and there isn't another player on the team's roster who could step in and fill that role while also constantly threatening defenses deep. The offense, however, has morphed this year, as it is now more of a tight end-based attack. From 2007-09, the Patriots ran the majority of their snaps out of a three-receiver set. This year, however, they have run with three-receiver sets on just 36.2 percent of their plays while running with multiple tight ends 64.5 percent of the time. TEs Alge Crumpler, Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez have opened up new options for the offense.

Patriots | Alge Crumpler favorite to start    Sat Jun 26, 02:46 PM

New England Patriots TE Alge Crumpler is the favorite to be the team's starting tight end this year, reports Kevin McNamara, of The Providence Journal. The team, however, is excited about rookies Rob Gronkowski and Aaron Hernandez.

Footballguys view: From all the minicamp reports it sounds like Hernandez is ahead of Gronkowski at this time. Crumpler's the savvy veteran, but Hernandez has the skill set to be the next Dallas Clark if he lives up to his potential.

Patriots | Tight end position overhauled    Sat Apr 24, 12:01 PM

The New England Patriots have overhauled their tight end position during the offseason, writes Mike Reiss, of ESPNBoston.com. The Patriots have drafted TEs Rob Gronkowski (6-6, 264) and Aaron Hernandez (6-2, 245) and added veteran Alge Crumpler (6-2, 262) during the offseason. Gronkowski and Crumpler have the needed size to make a difference at the line of scrimmage, while Hernandez appears to be more of a pure pass-catcher.

Footballguys view: Even though the Patriots didn't do anything to upgrade their deteriorating WR position, they still have done a ton to reload for Tom Brady, and the choice of Hernandez also offsets the risk of second-round TE Rob Gronkowski's back not being sound.

Patriots | Crumpler close to joining team    Thu Mar 18, 07:21 PM

Terry McCormick, of The Nashville City Paper, reports free-agent TE Alge Crumpler (Titans) is believed to be close to an agreement with the New England Patriots, according to league sources. No deal is likely to be completed until sometime next week.

Footballguys view: The Patriots lost both Ben Watson and Chris Baker this offseason, but helped fill the void by adding Crumpler. We expect them to address that position in the draft as well because the 2010 NFL Draft is deep at tight end.

His agent said Crumpler wants to keep playing in Tennessee. "He'll be playing next year for somebody,'' agent James Williams said. "But we haven't sat down seriously to gauge what the Titans really want to do. Alge had a good season, meshed with the team and was a good force in the locker room, as well as the blocking for Chris.   Titans | Crumpler trying to help Cook    Tue Jun 23, 08:21 PM

Jim Wyatt, of The Nashville Tennessean, reports Tennessee Titans TE Alge Crumpler has been trying to help TE Jared Cook with different things during offseason workouts. 'Crump is like a coach. Crump has been around the league a long time and he just knows -- he has a lot of wisdom to share. Every time I come off the field he'll tell me little things, tell me things I need to correct, which is very helpful, especially in the meeting rooms and when we're watching film. It's just great to have someone like that around, a big savvy guy who knows a lot and can teach you a lot. I learn something from him every day,' Cook said.
