Texans | Gary Kubiak talks about QB options    Mon Nov 28, 09:14 PM

Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak talked Monday, Nov. 28, about the quarterbacks which looked good last week during workouts. 'Different type players, you know, you got (QB Jeff Garcia), who's been successful in this league, who's been around a long, long time that (QB coach Greg Knapp) has a little familiarity with,' Kubiak said. 'Then (QB Brodie Croyle) I thought worked out very good, who's played in this league. (QB Chase Clement) did a good job in his workout.'

Footballguys view: The latest report is that Garcia or Delhomme will be signed after a workout tomorrow to back up T.J. Yates. We wonder how long the leash for Yates will be with a vet on the roster.

The Indianapolis Colts are working out free-agent QBs Dan Orlovsky (Colts) and Brodie Croyle (Chiefs) Tuesday, Sept. 27, according to sources with knowledge of the situation.

Chiefs | Not expected to make big effort to re-sign Brodie Croyle    Wed May 11, 03:23 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs are not expected to make a major effort to re-sign impending free-agent QB Brodie Croyle this offseason.

Footballguys view: Croyle was once thought to be the QB of the future in Kansas City. Now he must find a new home in the NFL if he wants to continue playing. A team like Buffalo may be interested in him to help out as a reserve quarterback.

Chiefs | May not bring back Brodie Croyle    Sat Apr 9, 05:16 PM

The Kansas City Chiefs may not look to bring back impending free-agent QB Brodie Croyle this offseason, reports Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are going to be in the market for a quarterback during the draft. They have brought in some rookies like Nevada QB Colin Kaepernick for a private visit. We think they could add a quarterback in the mid-rounds of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Croyle might be called upon to start in Week 14 against the San Diego Chargers with QB Matt Cassel (appendectomy) doubtful. Croyle took a majority of the first-team reps at practice this week. Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel's (appendectomy) status is unclear heading into Week 14 against the San Diego Chargers after he underwent an emergency appendectomy Wednesday, Dec. 8, according to The Associated Press. QB Brodie Croyle took most of the practice snaps Wednesday.

Chiefs | Matt Cassel likely to miss two weeks    Wed Dec 8, 07:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (appendectomy) is likely to miss at least two weeks after undergoing an appendectomy Wednesday, Dec. 8, according to The Kansas City Star's Adam Teicher. QB Brodie Croyle would be the starter in Week 14 against the San Diego Chargers if Cassel does not play.

Footballguys view: This isn't as a big a downgrade for the Chiefs offense as it seems. Brodie Croyle was more than serviceable last year in a tough week 1 matchup vs. the Ravens and as long as the running game is clicking, he'll be fine.

Chiefs | Croyle's added muscle to be more durable    Sun Jun 27, 08:12 PM

Rubin Grant, from AL.com, reports Brodie Croyle isn't ready to accept being just a backup quarterback in the NFL, although that's where he will find himself when the Kansas City Chiefs open training camp next month. Entering his fifth season, Croyle, 27, is slated to back up Matt Cassel. "You're not ever content being a backup," Croyle said Friday after working out for 30 minutes at the new D1 Sports Training and Therapy facility, which he partly owns, in Homewood near Brookwood Medical Center. "Once you play, once you've started, you always have that drive. If you lose that drive, you're probably not in love with game anymore. Obviously, I want to start, but I'm in a good position there." In an effort to remain healthy this season, Croyle has put on some extra weight. "Last year I was around 205, 206 pounds," he said. "When we finished minicamp (in May) I was at 214. Maybe that will give me a chance to stay healthy and be able to take the beating you take when you play in the NFL."

Footballguys view: Croyle has improved in our eyes over the course of his career, but will not get on the field unless Matt Cassel goes down with an injury. He may have to move on to another team if he wants another chance to be a starter in the league.

Chiefs | Brodie Croyle dealing with index finger injury    Sat Jun 12, 02:48 PM

Kansas City Chiefs backup QB Brodie Croyle (finger) has been limited during workouts because of a right index finger injury, reports CBSSports.com. However, the injury is not hurting his throwing, as he has thrown several nice passes during 7-on-7 drills.

Footballguys view: Croyle hit his finger on a teammates helmet a couple of weeks ago. It's not considered a serious injury, but one that is known to be quite painful.

Chiefs | Brodie Croyle, Tony Moeaki practicing Friday    Fri Jun 11, 12:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle (finger) and TE Tony Moeaki (undisclosed) are fully participating in practice Friday, June 11, reports KCChiefs.com's Josh Looney.

Footballguys view: Moeaki is one of our favorite rookie tight ends this year. He has high upside as a move tight end, and he can attack the deep middle of the defense because of his speed and athleticism. He creates mismatches every time he's on the field because he's too fast for linebackers to cover, and too big for safeties to cover. Durability is a major concern with Moeaki as he's struggled to stay healthy during his entire football career.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle (finger) was held out of team drills during the team's offseason workout Tuesday, June 1, but was able to do some individual drills, reports KCChiefs.com's Josh Looney.

Footballguys view: Croyle hit his finger on a teammates helmet when throwing a pass last week, so we expect the team to be careful with their backup quarterback as he comes back from this minor but painful injury.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle (finger) left the team's offseason workout Thursday, May 27, after hitting his finger off a helmet, reports Josh Looney, of KCChiefs.com.

Chiefs | Cassel struggles Week 13, benched in third quarter    Sun Dec 6, 05:39 PM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel went 10-for-29 for 84 yards and two interceptions in Week 13. He was replaced by QB Brodie Croyle late in the third quarter.

Footballguys view: Cassel has been unimpressive this year, but he has been given little to work with in the way of pass blocking or a running game, and he has had little more than one good receiver in most of his starts.

Chiefs | Sticking with Cassel in Week 3, but not closing door on potential change at quarterback    Wed Sep 23, 03:10 AM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said QB Matt Cassel will be the team's starting quarterback during Week 3. However, he left the door open for a change at quarterback. 'You've got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win,' Haley said. 'If that means another quarterback being in there other than Matt Cassel, then sign me up.' Cassel had a quarterback rating of 66.3 during Week 2, while QB Brodie Croyle had a quarterback rating of 116.1 during Week 1.

Footballguys view: Cassel was a bit rusty in week 2, but it's way too early for Haley to abandon him. It's easy to forget that Cassel was not great at first last year, and this is only his second year playing live football in the last nine years. It seems like he is trying to try up the heat under him to get him to perform with more urgency.

Footballguys view: The bottom line is that you shouldn't trust Cassel against a Raiders defense that gave Philip Rivers fits on Monday night because he's playing behind one of the weaker offensive lines in the league.

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle went 16-for-24 for 177 yards and two touchdowns in the team's Week 1 game.

Footballguys view: Croyle hung tough until the game got away from the Chiefs at the end. He certainly looked good enough to be a quality backup QB, if not put some questions in Todd Haley's head about who to start if Matt Cassel' struggles upon his return.

The Associated Press reports quarterback Matt Cassel appeared on Kansas City's practice field Monday for the first time since injuring his left knee on Aug. 29, but his status for Sunday's opener at Baltimore remained unclear. Coach Todd Haley was evasive whether Cassel would play Sunday. "I think that as the week goes on, we'll know a little bit more," said Haley. "We'll know a little bit more with Matt for sure. But it was good that he was out there. He was able to get through some things. As the week goes on a little further, we'll know a little more as far as where he's at."

CBSSports.com reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Brodie Croyle has been getting nearly all of the practice reps with the first-team offense while QB Matt Cassel (knee) has been out of practice.

Footballguys view: This conflicts with Adam Teicher from the Kansas City Star's report that Thigpen took most of the first-team snaps. Croyle seems to be a better fit for Todd Haley's offense, so we think he'd be more likely to start week 1 vs. Baltimore if Matt Cassel can't go.

Tyler Thigpen took most of the first-team snaps in Cassel's absence at practice on Tuesday, but Thigpen said the coaches haven't told that he's the starter until Cassel returns.

Footballguys view: It is the Ravens, so perhaps it's better than Cassel sits this one out. You probably didn't draft him to be your starter, but if case you did, you might want to check the matchup of your #2 QB.

Don Banks, of Sports Illustrated, reports that QB Brodie Croyle appears to be "firmly ahead" of Tyler Thigpen to back up Matt Cassel right now, although he thinks it is unlikely that Croyle pushes Cassel for the starting job.

Footballguys view: Croyle looked excellent in the preseason opener, and his skillset is better suited for a pro-style offense than Thigpen's. We think the Chiefs would still be smart to hold onto Thigpen because Croyle is not built to take an NFL beating, and he would soon get hurt if he was forced onto the field.

Footballguys view: Croyle had a great preseason opener, and Babb also reported that head coach Todd Haley refused to say Cassel has been the best QB in training camp. We wouldn't greatly change Dwayne Bowe's outlook if Croyle were to start, because Croyle wouldn't last long with his slight build, and Cassel would soon be in again.
