Footballguys view: Crowell looked like a quality starter in Buffalo, but a 2008 knee injury left him a shell of his old self on the field.

The Tampa Tribune notes the battle for the starting strongside linebacker job became a little more heated Thursday. The reason was the presence of Angelo Crowell, the veteran free agent the Bucs signed in the spring to man that spot. Crowell missed most of training camp with a sore hamstring but he returned to the field this week. Plans call for Crowell to get his first game action Saturday against the Jaguars, and Coach Raheem Morris says he is eager to see how Crowell looks. "I am excited about that," Morris said. "He's looked as good (the last few days) as he has since he's been here, so I'm fired up to see what he can do."

Roy Cummings, of The Tampa Tribune, reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Angelo Crowell (knee) has suffered a setback in his rehab from knee surgery. It is not known how severe the setback is, but linebackers coach Joe Barry said Crowell has been on the field for most of the last two weeks of practice.

Footballguys view: Crowell will have to battle two talented young backers in Quincy Black and Geno Hayes. Both were once thought to be possible heirs to Derrick Brooks old spot on the weak side, but that is currently occupied by converted safety Jermaine Phillips

PewterReport.com reports Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Brian Griese, PK Matt Bryant, P Josh Bidwell, OT Donald Penn, DE Greg White, LB Barrett Ruud, LB Angelo Crowell, RB Derrick Ward, RB Cadillac Williams, WR Maurice Stovall, OG Arron Sears, CB Torrie Cox and OG Julius Wilson sat out the team's voluntary practice Thursday, May 28.

Footballguys view: Some players, including White, Williams, Stovall and Sears, were believed to be receiving treatment during practice. Ruu and Penn's absences are believed to be contract-related.

'OTAs on May 12, baby - I'll be rolling. That's the goal right there - May 12,' Crowell said. 'I'm getting back into football shape right now. I'm about 30 days or so away, so I'm itching.' Crowell underwent season-ending knee surgery three days before the start of last season.
