Giants | Release Michael Cox    Mon Apr 27, 02:33 PM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox was waived Monday, April 27.

Footballguys view: Cox was a seventh-round pick for the Giants in 2013, and he started one game in two seasons. The Giants had to clean up a log-jam at running back, and Cox was the guy to go. Earlier this year in free agency, they added Shane Vereen to play as a change-of-pace back behind Rashad Jennings and alongside Andre Williams.

Giants | Michael Cox injures leg    Mon Nov 10, 03:31 AM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox (leg) suffered a lower left leg fracture Sunday, Nov. 9, against the Seattle Seahawks.

Footballguys view: The club will likely add a replacement running back this week. They should also be getting Rashad Jennings back on the field in the near future.

Giants | Andre Williams to continue to share    Fri Nov 7, 10:41 AM

New York Giants RB Andre Williams is expected to continue to lose carries to RBs Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox.

Footballguys view: Williams fumbled last week and he hasn't been all that effective anyway. This week's matchup at Seattle is terrible, so you'll likely want to avoid all Giants RBs this week.

Giants | Michael Cox added to roster    Mon Oct 6, 06:44 PM

The New York Giants signed practice squad RB Michael Cox to their active roster Monday, Oct. 6. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Cox was added to the active roster because of the injury to starter Rashad Jennings. We could see more from rookie Andre Williams and veteran Peyton Hillis with Jennings banged up.

Giants | Running back roles shaping up    Fri Aug 1, 08:26 AM

New York Giants RB Peyton Hillis handled the bulk of the repetitions with the second-team offense Thursday, July 31. RB Andre Williams continued to receive most of the goal line carries.

Footballguys view: With David Wilson's status up in the air, Hillis could have value as the primary backup to Rashad Jennings. Hillis was far from impressive last year for the Giants, but he was serviceable. The rookie Williams is not accomplished in the passing game and would be in a committee with Hillis if Jennings were to go down.

Giants | David Wilson's career likely over    Thu Jul 31, 10:48 AM

New York Giants RB David Wilson (neck) 'needs a miracle' from his surgeon's evaluation to be able to continue his playing career, according to a source.

Footballguys view: This is a pretty big blow to his comeback, though remember that the Giants are one of the more conservative teams when it comes to diagnosing neck injuries. Our own Andrew Garda is in Giants camp and spoke with Rashad Jennings who said Wilson was "upbeat" and "hopeful" while he has been attending film sessions and meetings. Jennings was already the clear-cut No. 1 back and rated as a low-end RB2 but Garda has been impressed with him in camp and reports he is getting a ton of balls thrown his way as well. This news could move up Andre Willams a bit, but keep in mind his skillset is much different than Wilson's and he has never really caught the ball regularly. He remains mostly a short yardage, goal line back and more of a factor in a touchdown heavy league as opposed to a standard league where he resides in the RB4 territory. Guys like Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox are getting a lot of reps as well, so shaking the backfield out is still an ongoing process so make sure you keep up with the camp reports.

Giants | Michael Cox could be kick return candidate    Sat Jul 5, 11:31 AM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox could be in the mix for the kick return job if he makes the final roster.

Footballguys view: That's the best (and perhaps only) way for him to make the final roster. The Giants have a new-look RB corps in 2014, and we should see Rashad Jennings as their top back this season.

Giants | Michael Cox will have to make team as RB    Wed Jul 2, 04:05 PM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox will make to make the team as a running back during training camp and may face an uphill battle if RB David Wilson (neck) is healthy. Cox made the team last season because he was used as a kick returner.

Giants | Coach wants to see two RBs during camp    Mon Jun 23, 02:16 PM

New York Giants running backs coach Craig Johnson said he is looking forward to seeing RBs Michael Cox and Kendall Gaskins once training camp starts. 'They're young guys, they want to prove it. They're hungry and they want to go after it. All the backs are pretty good size and pretty physical so I'm excited about the position,' Johnson said.

Footballguys view: Gaskins was a three-year starter at Richmond and was picked up by the Bills as an UDFA in 2013. He's more of a fullback who is tough to bring down and a decent receiver out of the backfield. Cox was a seventh-round pick by the Giants last year and played college football at both Michigan and UMASS. He averaged 3.6 yards per carry during his only season at UMASS, and he toted the rock only 19 times in three years at Michigan.

Giants | Michael Cox could start    Mon Dec 23, 06:03 PM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox could start at running back Week 17 if RBs Andre Brown (concussion) and Peyton Hillis (concussion) are not able to play.

Giants | RB roles clearer    Fri Nov 22, 05:57 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin doesn't expect to change things up when it comes to the roles of his running backs. Last week against the Green Bay Packers, RB Andre Brown was the lead back with RB Brandon Jacobs serving as the goal-line and short-yardage option. Brown had 18 carries for 75 percent of the workload, with Jacobs having five touches. RB Michael Cox will likely continue to be used on special teams, meaning RB Peyton Hillis would be inactive for the second straight week.

Footballguys view: Brown is facing a Cowboys defense that is without two starting linebackers, including defensive MVP Sean Lee. They gave up huge games to all three Saints running backs in Week 10, so Brown is almost a must play against Dallas.

Giants | Brandon Jacobs inactive    Sun Oct 27, 11:21 AM

New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) has been declared inactive for Week 8.

Footballguys view: Peyton Hillis is a low-end RB2/Flex start, although he was reasonably productive as the starter on Monday night. At the very least he is worth a waiver wire pickup this week to keep him out of enemy hands in a poor week at running back.

Giants | Brandon Jacobs doubtful    Fri Oct 25, 01:45 PM

New York Giants RB Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) is officially listed as doubtful for Week 8. RBs Peyton Hillis and Michael Cox will split repetitions for the second straight week.

Footballguys view: Hillis is the much better play here. The coaches don't seem to trust Cox yet, and he didn't impress on Monday night against the Vikings.

Giants | Michael Cox does little with chance    Tue Oct 22, 12:04 AM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox carried 11 times for just 23 yards in a start in Week 7 against the Minnesota Vikings Monday, Oct. 21. Cox started with RBs Brandon Jacobs (hamstring) and David Wilson (neck) sidelined.

Footballguys view: Cox was dancing too much against the Vikings. His wasted motion got him tackled at or near the line of scrimmage on many of his runs.

Giants | Michael Cox to start at RB    Mon Oct 21, 07:12 PM

Giants | Michael Cox expected to start    Mon Oct 21, 06:12 PM

New York Giants RB Michael Cox is expected to start at running back in the team's Week 7 game.

Footballguys view: No real surprise here. Cox has more experience that newly signed Peyton Hillis. We feel the Giants will have a more pass-happy game plan on Monday night.

Giants | Da'Rel Scott waived    Tue Oct 15, 04:11 PM

The New York Giants waived RB Da'Rel Scott Tuesday, Oct. 15. The team also released LB Darin Drakeford from the practice squad.

Footballguys view: It's the second time Scott has been waived by the Giants this year. They have Brandon Jacobs as the starter with both David Wilson and Andre Brown set to come back in the near future.

Giants | David Wilson's injury not serious    Mon Oct 7, 01:47 PM

New York Giants RB David Wilson's (neck) injury is not believed to be serious, and the team kept him from returning to the Week 5 game as a precaution. Wilson will undergo more tests Monday, Oct. 7.

Footballguys view: Good news for Wilson and the Giants here. Wilson has talent, but injuries and inconsistencies have marred his 2013 season. We'll see if he can stay healthy and help turn things around for the Giants this year.

Giants | Michael Cox not ready for bigger role    Wed Oct 2, 04:03 PM

New York Giants head coach Tom Coughlin indicated RB Michael Cox still needs to learn the offense to earn a bigger role this season.

Footballguys view: The Giants let Da'Rel Scott go on Tuesday even though he was the second leading rusher on the team. The lack of confidence in Cox means we'll see more from Brandon Jacobs.

New York Giants RB Michael Cox is returning kicks for the team in practice and would like to embrace the job moving forward. 'I feel pretty comfortable doing it,' Cox said. 'I don't really have any issues with that. I know all the plays. Hopefully I go back there and return some kicks.'

Giants | Three draft picks sign    Fri May 10, 01:57 PM

The New York Giants have signed second-round draft choice DT Johnathan Hankins, third-round draft choice DE Damontre Moore and seventh-round draft choice RB Michael Cox. Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Hankins is a technically sound defensive tackle who has good functional strength and understands leverage. Moore will add edge pressure for a team that needs to re-energize their pass rush. In 2012 Moore recorded 28 total pressures (hurries and knockdowns), tied for the second-most in the SEC.

Giants | Three expected to compete for No. 3 RB job    Sun Apr 28, 04:48 PM

New York Giants RBs Da'Rel Scott, Ryan Torain and Michael Cox are expected to compete for the No. 3 running back job during offseason workouts and training camp.

Footballguys view: Torain is back, and not on a Mike Shanahan team. Scott has the speed and two years of experience in the organization under his belt, but if he was on track to be a major contributor, he wouldn't have to fight off retreads and marginal prospects to win the #3 job.
