Jets | NYJ made multiple offers to Kirk Cousins    Sun Mar 18, 08:26 PM

The New York Jets were one of four finalists for Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins and made multiple offers to him. New York Daily News reporter Manesh Mehta said Cousins weighed his decisions heavily and left the Jets on the board until Tuesday, March 13.

Footballguys view: The Jets wanted to break the bank for Cousins and they tried...but they fell short in one important category. They're not close and Cousins wanted to go to a contender. Signing with the Vikings, Cousins could and should make a deep postseason run in 2018.

Vikings | Specifics on deal for Kirk Cousins    Fri Mar 16, 05:03 PM

Updating a previous report, Minnesota Vikings QB Kirk Cousins has $6 million in incentives, $2 million per year, tied to his three-year, $84 million deal. Those incentives are triggered by play time, team points scored and Super Bowl wins. To hit the highest level in any year, Cousins has to be Super Bowl MVP.

Vikings | Kirk Cousins officially signs with MIN    Thu Mar 15, 03:26 PM

Updating a previous report, free-agent QB Kirk Cousins (Redskins) officially signed a three-year, $84 million deal with the Minnesota Vikings Thursday, March 15.

Footballguys view: Cousins has been a pioneer in the 'getting paid' business. He was franchise-tagged twice by Washington and now gets a fully guaranteed, three-year deal. Now, the Vikings just hope he's good at the 'winning championships' business. After a 13-3 season that ended in the NFC Championship Game, Cousins will have plenty of pressure to get to the Super Bowl from the moment the regular season starts.

Vikings | Kirk Cousins likely for full guarantee    Tue Mar 13, 11:56 AM

Updating earlier reports, Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is expected to sign a three-year, fully guaranteed deal with the Minnesota Vikings Thursday, March 15, according to sources.

Footballguys view: Cousins is a pioneer when it comes to contract negotiations. With $86 million fully guaranteed, it means Cousins has made roughly $120 million in guaranteed money over a five-year span. Now, he's got to win. The pressure in Minnesota will be tremendous as they were 13-3 last year and lost in the NFC Championship to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Cardinals | Arizona still in play for Kirk Cousins    Mon Mar 12, 05:17 PM

Free-agent QB Kirk Cousins (Redskins) remains a free-agent option for the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: That's cool and everything, but Cousins reportedly wants to go to a contender...something Arizona is a long way from being. Oh yeah, there's the money too. Cousins is likely to get a contract that pays him around $30 million annually and the Cardinals currently have $19.6 million in cap space per OverTheCap.com. They may still be in the running, but they are bringing up the rear behind teams like the Vikings, Broncos and Jets.

Cardinals | David Johnson recruiting Kirk Cousins    Sat Mar 10, 10:31 PM

Arizona Cardinals RB David Johnson sent out a tweet Friday, March 9, asking Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins to join him in Arizona.

Footballguys view: Cousins wants to play for a contender...so Johnson has his work cut out for him. The Cardinals only have $19 million in cap space at this time, so they'd have some work to do to simply afford Cousins and his likely $30 million per year contract.

Vikings | Vikings on verge of landing Kirk Cousins?    Wed Mar 7, 11:54 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could be on the verge of going to the Minnesota Vikings, as the 'belief' around the league is that it is a 'done deal' between the two sides, according to Tony Pauline of DraftAnalyst.com.

Footballguys view: While we have to wait until pen actually hits paper before truly calling this a done deal, it certainly seems like things are hurtling towards a cousins - Vikings marriage. That could make things very interesting for teams like Denver, the Jets, and Cleveland all of whom were thought to be dead set on Kirk Cousins this year.

Vikings | Kirk Cousins, Vikings have mutual interest    Tue Mar 6, 06:38 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins and the Minnesota Vikings have a mutual interest in each other, but no offers and no decisions have been made yet and financial details will be a big factor, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero.

Footballguys view: This is a different direction than the report earlier of a 3-year, $91 million deal, fully guaranteed. The dance goes on. It really feels like this is between the Vikings (best winning situation) and the New York Jets (most money) though the Broncos aren't totally out. This domino will tumble swiftly at the start of free agency though.

Vikings | Big offer for Kirk Cousins?    Tue Mar 6, 03:40 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has reportedly been offered a three-year, $91 million fully guaranteed deal from the Minnesota Vikings.

Footballguys view: But we thought you couldn't negotiate yet? Oh, right, legal-illegal tampering time is upon us. Players like longer contracts but this could allow Cousins a chance to get yet another contract if he plays well. That and the fully guaranteed aspect of it make this a fairly attractive offer.

Broncos | Denver still in play for Kirk Cousins    Mon Mar 5, 03:30 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins remains a strong blip on the Denver Broncos' radar despite reports to the contrary, according to 9news.com's Mike Klis. Klis added that no prospective team has had any visits or talked financials with Cousins yet.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are still going to make a run at Cousins. They may not be the front runners as the Vikings seem to be his likely destination. If the Broncos can't get Cousins, they will likely move on to a guy like Case Keenum.

Jets | NYJ worry about losing out on Kirk Cousins    Sun Mar 4, 06:57 PM

The New York Jets plan to bid on free-agent QB Kirk Cousins (Redskins), but they are worried about losing out in the pursuit to the Minnesota Vikings. The team feels they can outbid the Vikings and offer a better contract structure, according to a team source, but the organization still feels Cousins might go to Minnesota for what he'll believe is a better chance to immediately win.

Footballguys view: Cousins wants to go to a contender...and that is clearly not the Jets. The Vikings are leading the way in the Cousins sweepstakes with perhaps the Broncos able to lure him away. The Jets had better make other plans, including but not limited to adding a quarterback with the no6 overall pick.

Green Bay Packers QB Aaron Rodgers' contract extension is unlikely to be completed until after Washington Redskins impending free-agent Kirk Cousins signs his new deal, according to Charles Robinson of Yahoo! Sports.

Footballguys view: Rodgers deserves to be the highest paid player in the game, and by waiting for the Cousins numbers, he will insure that happens - for a little bit at least.

Redskins | Four teams to pursue Kirk Cousins    Sat Mar 3, 01:21 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is expected to be pursued the Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings, New York Jets and Arizona Cardinals during free agency, and they likely will be the finalists for Cousins, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Broncos and Vikings appear to be the most likely destinations and the loser in the Cousins sweepstakes will take a long look at the Vikings quarterbacks from last year and AJ McCarron as a starter for 2018.

Broncos | Broncos 'all-in' for Kirk Cousins    Thu Mar 1, 11:26 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has become an 'all-in' target for the Denver Broncos when free agency kicks off on Wednesday, March 14, according to two sources familiar with the club's free agency plans. Additionally, those sources mentioned that the Broncos have 'examined scenarios' to potentially open up between $40 million and $50 million in cap space for this offseason.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are going to be one of the most aggressive teams when it comes to landing Cousins. They may not be as close as the Vikings or have as much money to spend as the Jets, but Denver has done this before. They were able to lure Peyton Manning to the Mile High City in free agency and it gave them instant success. Cousins is not Manning, but he's a potential franchise quarterback available in free agency during his prime.

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is not expected to agree to terms during the two-day negotiating period prior to the official start of free agency on March 14 in order to take one or more visits, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Cousins will want to hear all of the pitches and potentially play suitors off of each other to increase his price, and also compare the proposals and promises. Minnesota and Denver remain the most likely teams for Cousins this season.

Vikings | Vikings a 'player' for Kirk Cousins    Tue Feb 27, 12:29 AM

The Minnesota Vikings are 'going to be players' for Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network.

Footballguys view: If Cousins values a chance at a championship more than maxing out his deal, the Vikings are the answer. They have the best surrounding cast on offense, including John DeFillipo at offensive coordinator and Kevin Stefanski at quarterback coach.

Broncos | Denver will meet with Kirk Cousins' agent    Mon Feb 26, 03:48 PM

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins's agent, Mike McCartney, will meet with the Denver Broncos during the NFL combine this week. McCartney also represents Broncos QB Trevor Siemian.

Footballguys view: At this time, the Broncos could be considered a favorite to land Cousins. That is...unless the Vikings get into the mix. Siemian is likely to be traded away and Paxton Lynch is a bust. The Broncos have missed the playoffs each of the last two years after winning Super Bowl 50. Adding Cousins is the first of multiple moves they must do to get back in the hunt.

Cardinals | Kirk Cousins not in play for Arizona    Sun Feb 25, 10:54 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins was never 'truly' an option for the Arizona Cardinals because of the expected price tag, according to Mike Jurecki of 98.7 Arizona, and Jurecki expects the Cardinals to add a veteran quarterback in free agency and select one in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals don't want to get into the frenzy. Cousins is expected to command a deal that pays him nearly $30 million per year. Arizona doesn't have a quarterback at this time, but they want no part of that huge financial commitment. The Cardinals have the no15 overall pick in the 2018 NFL draft. They'll have to move up for a quarterback they want as the top four (Sam Darnold, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Baker Mayfield) may be gone by that time.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins struggles vs. winning teams    Sun Feb 25, 05:27 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins went 4-19 as the Redskins' starting quarterback against teams that finished their seasons with a winning record.

Footballguys view: That's not a great sign...especially when some team is likely to pay Cousins nearly $30 million per year to be their quarterback. Supporters will argue the talent around him, while detractors will say that Cousins doesn't win. The truth is set to come about when Cousins gets a new team this offseason.

Updating previous reports, Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could receive an offer from the New York Jets that would give him $60 million guaranteed in the first year of the contract, according to a league source.

Redskins | A Kirk Cousins tag and trade not realistic    Mon Feb 19, 04:30 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins could theoretically be franchise tagged by the Redskins, but if that were to occur then Cousins would not entertain a long-term deal with his new team and he would make a whopping $34 million under the tag. If Cousins did not immediately sign the tag, he could not be traded anyway. Furthermore, the Redskins would not be able to do much else in free agency and also just traded for Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Footballguys view: Washington wants to get something for Cousins before they lose him in free agency. Tagging him for a third time goes against the spirit of the rule, and there have been reports that Cousins would file a grievance if Washington went that route.

Jets | NYJ all-in on Kirk Cousins    Mon Feb 19, 10:34 AM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins will have heavy pursuit from the New York Jets, who are prepared to pay 'whatever it takes' to land him, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Jets could use a franchise quarterback and Cousins is arguably the best one available. Whether or not he's free and clear, or if Washington is going to tag him and ask for something via trade is unknown at this point. What is known is that Cousins is likely to get a deal greater than the $27.5 million annually that Jimmy Garoppolo just received from the 49ers.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins to file grievance if tagged    Sun Feb 18, 02:23 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins will file a grievance if the Redskins decide to place the franchise tag on him, according to a source.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins the best available QB?    Sat Feb 10, 11:19 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is the 'safest bet at the position, in free agency or the draft,' according to an NFL executive.

Footballguys view: The safest bet is also likely to be the most expensive bet at the quarterback position. Washington may tag Cousins in order to get a team to trade for him. After acquiring his rights, his new team would have to pay him a deal near or greater than the $137.5 million deal Jimmy Garoppolo got from the 49ers. The Broncos and Vikings are considered the favored landing spots for Cousins.

The Washington Redskins are considering placing the franchise tag on QB Kirk Cousins in order to trade him and recover some of the compensation they sent to the Kansas City Chiefs in exchange for QB Alex Smith, according to multiple sources.

Footballguys view: This could be tough as it will keep Washington from having cap flexibility while Cousins is on the books, and other teams might not play ball knowing that Washington can't keep Cousins. This is a risky move that could backfire by keeping Washington from being players in free agency and getting little for that trouble.

Broncos | Kirk Cousins eyeing Denver?    Fri Feb 2, 11:50 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would 'love' if the Denver Broncos showed interest in signing him this offseason.

Footballguys view: This has seemed like a very obvious pairing for a long time. Cousins wants a winner, John Elway can close a deal, and the team has wide receiver talent that he can unlock. Consider Denver the favorite to land him unless we hear otherwise.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins surprised by Alex Smith trade    Fri Feb 2, 02:38 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he was surprised when he heard about the Redskins' agreement to acquire Kansas City Chiefs QB Alex Smith.

Footballguys view: The communication between Cousins and the team seemed to break down as soon as the season was over and it didn't take long for him to remove Washington from Twitter profile. Only Cleveland is clearly lower on the organizational dysfunction scale.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins excited about free agency    Fri Feb 2, 02:20 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he is looking forward to hitting the free-agent market because he has not been able to choose the team he plays for since college. He said he will be looking to sign with a team that can win a championship.

Footballguys view: Denver, Minnesota, and Jacksonville are all candidates if Cousins is focusing on winning a title. Jacksonville is leaning towards Blake Bortles and Minnesota has three quarterbacks that were on the roster last year to consider too. In light of this, the Broncos are looking good as his future team, and the Jets are on the fringe.

Bills | Kirk Cousins won't see Bills' pursuit    Thu Feb 1, 09:19 AM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins is unlikely to be pursued by the Buffalo Bills, in the opinion of beat writer Mark Gaughan.

Footballguys view: The Bills don't have the money and aren't as attractive as several other teams in the hunt from a "win-now" standpoint. It could be they are determined to make a run at keeping Tyrod Taylor as well, or jumping on a lower-hype player who hits the market.

Jets | Jets expected to go after Kirk Cousins    Wed Jan 31, 11:36 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins has drawn the attention of 'quarterback-needy teams,' with the New York Jets 'expected' to be one of his suitors, according to Rich Cimini of ESPN.com.

Footballguys view: This isn't a shock to anyone. The Jets have a lot of cap space and a need. Cousins has a need to get paid. The wrinkle is Cousins' insistence that winning means more to him than money. He's been well paid the last few years so choosing a team like the Broncos, who are closer to contention than the Jets, could be attractive.

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins would be welcomed by Denver Broncos LB Von Miller. 'Kirk could take us over the edge,' Miller said, 'but that's the National Football League. There are a lot of teams that need Kirk.'

Footballguys view: The Broncos made a lot of sense as a win now team for Cousins, and John Elway can establish a connection with Cousins to close the deal, just as he did with Peyton Manning. Denver might be the strongest candidate for Cousins, along with the Jets.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins wants winning team     Tue Jan 30, 03:03 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins won't be solely focused on how much money he can make this offseason. He wants to be on a team that will contend for the Super Bowl. 'Is money a part of it? Sure. Is it the only thing? No,' Cousins said. 'It is about winning, and that's what I want more than anything, so I'm going to be willing to make sacrifices or do what has to be done to make sure I'm in the best possible position to win, and that's what the focus is going to be.'

Browns | Joe Thomas wants Kirk Cousins    Sun Jan 28, 10:36 PM

Cleveland Browns OT Joe Thomas said he wants the front office to use cap space to sign Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins.

Redskins | Former GM critical of Kirk Cousins     Sat Jan 20, 11:44 PM

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins isn't a 'special' player, according to former general manager Scot McCloughan. 'You just need to have some talent around him because you don't want him to be throwing the ball 35 to 40 times to win the game,' McCloughan said.

Footballguys view: Cousins isn't special in the same way Drew Brees or Tom Brady is, but he is still one of the 12-15 best quarterbacks in the league by any measure, which means he'll be one of the highest paid players in the game and the centerpiece of a franchise. Whether he's a fantasy QB1 in 2018 will depend on his supporting cast, which is the gist of McCloughan's point.

Redskins | Jay Gruden wants long-term answer at QB    Mon Jan 8, 01:35 PM

Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said he prefers that impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins signs a long-term deal or the team moves onto another quarterback. 'I think something has to be done,' Gruden said. 'I personally don't want to go through another one-year deal, and just [keep going] one year, one year. I think you want to have a quarterback in here that's going to be here. And hopefully that is Kirk, and if not, we have to move on and do what we have to do as an organization.'

Footballguys view: Cousins has been franchise-tagged by Washington each of the last two years. He hasn't gotten a long-term deal that he wants, and the team is running out of time to get it done. They could tag him again in 2018, but the cost would be almost $35 million and he still wouldn't have a long-term contract. If Cousins gets to the open market, several teams should have interest in the veteran quarterback. Washington could transition tag Cousins so they at least would get something in return if they lose him to another team.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins will sign offer if tagged    Fri Jan 5, 05:43 PM

Washington Redskins impending free-agent QB Kirk Cousins said he would sign the one-year tender offer if he receives the franchise tag again this offseason.

Footballguys view: Washington could actually franchise Cousins for a third time in a row, but that move would get Cousins a one-year guaranteed salary of $34.5 million. We could see Cousins tagged with the idea that some team would trade for him and give him the long-term deal he covets. Washington may consider placing the transition tag on Cousins, which would also get them something in return if he is signed away by another team. It's hard to believe Washington will let Cousins walk without getting anything for him in return.

Redskins | Week 17 game recap for Redskins    Sun Dec 31, 05:08 PM

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 20-of-37 pass attempts for 158 yards, no touchdowns and three interceptions in the Week 17 game against the New York Giants. RB Kapri Bibbs led the team with 47 rushing yards on 12 attempts, while Cousins had a 12-yard touchdown run on his only rush. RB Samaje Perine ran twice for just three yards. Bibbs also led the team in receiving with 53 yards on a game-high eight catches, and WR Josh Doctson finished with four grabs and 37 yards. WR Jamison Crowder posted three catches for 25 yards, and WR Ryan Grant ended up with two catches with 23 yards. TE Vernon Davis rounded things out with two snares for 20 yards.

Redskins | Kirk Cousins makes franchise history    Mon Dec 25, 04:21 PM

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins became the first quarterback in Redskins' history with three seasons of at least 25 touchdown passes.

Footballguys view: All that and Cousins has not been worth locking up with a long-term contract. Washington has placed the franchise tag on Cousins each of the last two seasons. They could do that again for 2018 (for one final time) with a price tag of $34.5 million fully guaranteed for one year. Reports indicate they are scouting the top quarterbacks likely to be available in the 2018 NFL draft. Cousins may not want to come back, and they seem ready to move on. However, expect them to tag Cousins (franchise or transition) so they get something for him if (when?) they lose him.

Washington Redskins QB Kirk Cousins completed 18 of his 26 pass attempts for 196 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions in the Week 15 game against the Arizona Cardinals.

Footballguys view: Cousins was assisted by a short field set up by a Blaine Gabbert turnover, but he was still quiet in a home game against a west coast team. He's a low ceiling option against the Broncos - a might he might play for next year.
