Chiefs | Matt Cassel organizing workouts Thu May 5, 01:06 PM
Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel has organized workouts this week with some of the team's wide receivers and tight ends. WRs Dwayne Bowe and Jerheme Urban and TE Brad Cottam have joined Cassel for the workouts. Cassel said he has called QB Ricky Stanzi and WR Jonathan Baldwin about joining the workouts.
Footballguys view: It's nice to see Cassel reaching out to the Chiefs rookies to see if they want to join in. The team got a taste of the postseason last year and don't want to regress in 2011. |

Chiefs | Brad Cottam waived Wed Jul 28, 08:08 PM
The Kansas City Chiefs have waived TE Brad Cottam (neck) after he failed his physical, reports FOXSports.com's Adam Caplan, citing a source.
Footballguys view: Cottam has tremendous athleticism for a man his size, which made him a third-round pick, but just as it was at Tennessee, he just can't stay healthy enough to regularly play this game. |

Footballguys view: Listing Jamaal Charles inactive is a surprise as he wasn't on this week's injury report. Larry Johnson now gets the bulk of the work against the Raiders. Johnson still doesn't project to much more than a flex play this week. |

Chiefs | Ryan likely starting TE Fri Sep 4, 02:41 PM
Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports that TE Sean Ryan likely locked up the starting TE job for the Chiefs with catches of 20 and 40 yards vs. the St. Louis Rams on Thursday, September 3.
Footballguys view: Brad Cottam has done nothing but lose value since Tony Gonzalez was traded to Atlanta. He is big and athletic, but had trouble playing well consistently in practice, especially when it came time to catch the ball. We wouldn't recommend Ryan as a deep sleeper, Todd Haley has rarely used the TE as a target in the passing game. |

Chiefs | Cottam's struggles leave starting TE spot wide open Sun Jul 12, 04:22 PM
Michael Blunda, of Pro Football Weekly, reports that Brad Cottam dropped too many catchable balls in OTAs to seize the opportunity opened up by the trade of starting TE Tony Gonzalez to Atlanta. Veterans Sean Ryan and Tony Curtis, and rookie seventh-round pick Jake O'Connell all have a chance to get significant playing time if they perform well in camp.
Footballguys view: One more reason to avoid KC tight ends at all costs. Todd Haley's offense didn't use the TE much as a passing game target in Arizona, so don't expect much from the position in Kansas City. |

Chiefs | TE job remains open competition Tue Jun 16, 03:34 PM
Kent Babb, from the Kansas City Star, reports 2nd year TE Brad Cottam hasn't grabbed the starting job as it was expected. The tight end job remains open, and that has as much to do with Cottam's dropped passes as several other players' emergence.
Footballguys view: It's a lot of pressure to replace a future Hall of Famer, and so far Cottam hasn't performed up to expectations. He is competing with Sean Ryan and Tony Curtis for the starting job. Cottam should still win out in this competition but he had better start playing up to his potential. |

Chiefs | Cottam will not be given starting job Fri Jun 12, 03:20 PM
Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs TE Brad Cottam has not been given the starting tight end job and will have to compete for the job during training camp.
Brad Cottam player pageChiefs | Cottam likely will be starter Mon May 25, 04:59 PM
Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs TE Brad Cottam likely will be the team's starting tight end this season.
Footballguys view: Brad Cottam is an extremely athletic big man with even bigger shoes to fill now that Tony Gonzalez is gone to Atlanta. He was considered by scouts to be the biggest deep threat at TE in the 2008 draft class because of his great height and tremendous hands. His durability is a big question mark because he missed 11 games as a senior because of a wrist injury and also had thumb surgery in 2004. |
