Chiefs | Jamaal Charles showed concussion symptoms    Wed Oct 22, 02:15 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (concussion) showed no signs of a concussion when he was checked after a helmet-to-helmet hit in Week 7, according to trainer Rick Burkholder. However, Charles said he was never checked, and he said after the game that the hit was no big deal. He changed his tune after the game: 'It definitely hurt,' Charles said. 'A couple plays later, I just (saw) this light buzz around my eyes and I was trying to catch 'em. But I was like, 'Let's get the ball and run again.'' Charles had other concussion symptoms, as well, but didn't think he had a concussion. He was cleared from the concussion protocol Tuesday, Oct. 21, and was cleared to practice Wednesday, Oct. 22, but the team will continue to monitor him.

Footballguys view: Um, the Chiefs had better keep an eye on Charles here. He's clearly the best player on the roster, and Charles is one of the best backs in all of football. We're happy that Andy Reid didn't have to apologize (again) for not using Charles enough. Charles was a big reason why the Chiefs were able to beat the Chargers in Week 7.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles cleared to practice    Wed Oct 22, 01:41 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (concussion) was cleared to practice Wednesday, Oct. 22, but the team will continue to monitor him throughout the week.

Footballguys view: Charles had concussion-like symptoms after a big hit in the game against the San Diego Chargers last week. He should be good for Week 8.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles finding room to run    Tue Oct 7, 09:56 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has averaged more than five yards per carry in each of the past two games, and offensive line coach Doug Pederson said improved play from the offensive line has helped boost the rushing attack.

Footballguys view: Charles ranks 6th in the NFL with a healthy average of 3.57 yards per rush before contact. The league average is 2.53 yards before contact per rush so far in 2014. That shows the offensive line is doing a good job of opening holes for the superstar runner.

Chiefs | Andy Reid regrets play-calling decisions    Tue Oct 7, 12:36 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles didn't touch the ball on any of the team's final 10 plays of their Week 5 loss to the San Francisco 49ers, and head coach Andy Reid regrets his play-calling decisions down the stretch. The Chiefs failed to convert on a third and short early in the fourth quarter, electing to pass instead of run with Charles.

Footballguys view: What's going on Andy? He messed up the gameplane and playcalling in the Week 1 blowout loss (at home) against the Tennessee Titans. Does some coach need to remind him how awesome Jamaal Charles is? Something needs to be fixed here, because these Reid apologies are wearing thin.

Chiefs | Coach talks Jamaal Charles' workload    Mon Oct 6, 03:04 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles received a limited amount of touches in Week 5, because the offense only ran 15 plays in the second half of the game, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Charles can get a large workload--and he will moving forward--provided the Chiefs can possess the ball for a reasonable amount of time. They'll work on that stuff during the Week 6 bye.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles probable    Fri Oct 3, 05:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) fully participated in practice Friday, Oct. 3, and is listed as probable for Week 5.

Footballguys view: Charles is back to his RB1 status...thanks Andy Reid! His return has made Knile Davis more of a flex play each week.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited again    Thu Oct 2, 06:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) was limited in practice Thursday, Oct. 2.

Footballguys view: Not a huge concern here. Charles was limited with the same ankle injury last week, and he still played against the Patriots in Week 4. We're expecting him to be on the field for a normal workload against the 49ers in Week 5.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles probable    Sat Sep 27, 05:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) is listed as probable for Week 4. He was limited in practice again Saturday, Sept. 27.

Footballguys view: If Charles is playing he has to be in your lineup. The problem is, you have a Monday night game, leaving you few options (if you don't have Knile Davis) if he is deactivated. If Charles is out, Davis becomes an RB1/RB2 play but if Charles plays, he's too risky to play. Charles should put up top ten fantasy RB numbers - assuming they use him properly.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited again    Fri Sep 26, 05:48 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) was limited for the second straight day in practice Friday, Sept. 26.

Footballguys view: Charles appears to be on track to play on Monday night, but monitor the Saturday practice report. Ideally, you'll have Charles and Knile Davis and be able to play the starter on Monday night, but if you only have Charles, treat him as a low RB1, and if you only have Davis, you probably have to go forward as if he'll be the backup against New England.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) likely will be able to play in Week 4, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles increasing reps    Thu Sep 25, 10:43 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) will have his role expanded in practice Thursday, Sept. 25.

Footballguys view: Good news for Charles owners, not so much for Knile Davis owners. Charles will likely start which means Davis is going to the bench. Charles will be a borderline RB1 this week.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles to return to practice    Mon Sep 22, 06:05 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) will 'most likely' return to practice this week after sitting out in Week 3, according to head coach Andy Reid. Kansas City has an extra day off this week while preparing for their Week 4 matchup against the New England Patriots Monday, Sept. 29.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to monitor this situation closely. If Charles can practice later in the week, the chances are good that he'll play in Week 4. Charles practiced on a limited basis on both Thursday and Friday last week, but he did not play.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles not expected to go    Sun Sep 21, 09:37 AM

Updating an earlier report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) is not expecting to play Sunday, Sept. 21, but he will test his ankle on in pre-game warm-ups. RB Knile Davis would be the starter if Charles doesn't suit up.

Footballguys view: Consider Davis a solid RB2, with some risk that Charles plays after all. Because of the late game start, you will have to take a leap of faith either way. Playing Charles is not advised unless you have no other choice.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles splits reps    Sat Sep 20, 12:23 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RBs Jamaal Charles (ankle) and Knile Davis split first-team reps in practice Friday, Sept. 19. Davis was the running back for the first snap of practice, and then Charles took the next two snaps.

Footballguys view: Officially, Charles was listed as a limited participant. He spent time running some light pass patterns and caught passes with the rest of the team's receivers and backs. This complicates things for fantasy owners. Both are RB3s at this time.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 19, and is listed as questionable for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Charles will likely be a game-time decision. It's hard to bench him if active, but his range of outcomes is very wide with many paths to a poor day.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles practicing again    Fri Sep 19, 02:17 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) was practicing with the team for the second straight day Friday, Sept. 19, after missing practice Wednesday, Sept. 17, with a high ankle sprain. Charles' official status on the injury report has not been released yet. Charles ran light patterns and caught passes with the receivers and running backs after warming up Friday. RB Knile Davis took the first snap of practice with the starting offense, but Charles took the next two snaps.

Footballguys view: Charles could do anything from start and get most of the workload to not even suit up in Miami, but he is clearly closer to a return than any of us thought a few days ago. Stay tuned.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles takes part in warm-ups    Thu Sep 18, 04:09 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) took part in the early portion of practice open to the media Thursday, Sept. 18, and his availability in Week 3 against the Miami Dolphins is unknown. He went through warm-ups and was then tended to by a trainer before joining the running back drills. Charles did a drill that involved cutting through cones to catch a pass, and he didn't appear to have any problems.

Footballguys view: Ankle sprain, smankle sprain looks like all that Knile Davis talk was for naught. Let's put this in perspective though as we don't know how Charles will feel tonight or tomorrow, we don't know how Andy Reid will misuse--excuse me, use him and we don't know if the team will be cautious with him and split carries off to Davis. We--ever so carefully--have Charles as a RB2 with some upside. Given the questions around his injury and the poor showing the Chiefs have had this season, a little caution is a good thing.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles practicing    Thu Sep 18, 02:50 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) is participating in practice Thursday, Sept. 18.

Footballguys view: As we said in our email update, Teicher has deep ties in KC and is a solid source--he knows things. We'll watch this carefully for any soreness or issues which might crop up from the practice. This is all good but sit tight--we don't have all the info yet and he may still sit. If he doesn't you have to like him as an RB1.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will not practice    Wed Sep 17, 12:51 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) will not participate in practice Wednesday, Sept. 17.

Footballguys view: The ankle injury is considered minor, but Charles' playing status is unknown at this time. We'll see if he can practice later in the week in order to play on Sunday. If Charles doesn't play, then backup Knile Davis will get the start.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles injury not severe    Tue Sep 16, 09:24 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (ankle) high ankle sprain does not appear to be severe, according to head coach Andy Reid. His status is unknown.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs and for fantasy owners here. Monitor the practice report to see when Charles gets back into action. Just because the injury is not severe doesn't mean that Charles is immediately back. Knile Davis is a hot waiver wire addition this week.

Chiefs | Ankle sprain for Jamaal Charles    Sun Sep 14, 08:19 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) suffered a sprained ankle in the Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos, head coach Andy Reid said Sunday, Sept. 14.

Footballguys view: The question is how ready Charles will be to play at Miami next week. Knile Davis's big day had to frustrate Charles owners, and it may cause the Chiefs to be cautious with their offensive MVP because the backup was so productive in a tough divisional matchup. Charles will have an MRI tomorrow according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (ankle) will not return to the Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos after leaving in the first quarter with an ankle injury.

Footballguys view: Charles and the Chiefs travel to Miami next week, in case you were wondering. Knile Davis has looked good in his stead, so Kansas City won't feel the need to rush him back.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (foot) left the Week 2 game against the Denver Broncos in the first quarter due to an apparent left foot injury. He is on the sidelines on the training table getting attention.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles underused     Tue Sep 9, 10:10 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles received just 11 touches in Week 1, rushing seven times for 19 yards and catching four passes for 15 yards. Head coach Andy Reid took the blame for Charles' lack of involvement in the offense. 'Not giving 25 the ball more than seven times is negligence on my part,' Reid said Monday, Sept. 8.

Footballguys view: This just doesn't make sense. Charles is one of the best--if not THE best--running backs in the game today. The team needs to get him involved early and often moving forward. We'll see if the Chiefs can jump-start Charles in Week 2 against the Denver Broncos.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (foot) participated in practice Thursday, Aug. 21, but worked with the second- and scout-team offenses during practices. The team is not saying if Charles will play in the third preseason game.

Footballguys view: Charles is considered one of the top few fantasy running backs going into this season. The team will be cautious with him, but he should be 100% by Week 1.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles injury update    Mon Aug 18, 12:16 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (foot) suffered a bruised foot when he twisted it after practice, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles sat out of the Week 2 preseason game versus the Carolina Panthers as a precautionary measure, Reid said.

Footballguys view: This sounds like a minor issue for Charles. Fantasy owners should still be taking him off the board with the first or second overall pick in their fantasy drafts.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (foot) will not play in the second preseason game due to a bruised foot. RB Knile Davis will start in his place.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't be scaled back    Sun Aug 10, 06:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' workload won't be scaled back by the team. Head coach Andy Reid said he's comfortable if Charles receives 320 touches for the third straight year, in large part because of the way Charles takes care of his body.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners can breathe a sigh of relief here. Charles put together what may have been his best all-around season in 2013, setting career highs in receptions (70), receiving yards (693) and touchdowns (19)--and oh yeah, he rushed 259 times for 1,287 yards.

Updating an ongoing story, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has agreed to an undisclosed contract extension and is on his way to training camp, per sources.

Footballguys view: That was the shortest holdout in the history of the NFL. Charles was going to skip the start of camp because he wanted more money. The Chiefs quickly reacted and gave him a contract extension that locks him up for the next four years. Charles is now the second-highest paid running back in the NFL behind Adrian Peterson. Footballguys view: This conflicts with an earlier report from a Kansas City TV station. Charles is looking to make more money, and he feels underpaid at his current average annual salary of $4.6 million. At this time, the Chiefs have around $9 million in cap space. They are looking to get a deal done with Justin Houston in addition to Charles. We'll see if they can do some salary-cap gymnastics to get both paid.
