Chiefs | Jamaal Charles unlikely this week    Mon Aug 22, 10:08 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is unlikely to play in the third preseason game, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles should practice more this week, however.

Footballguys view: We don't see the need to run Charles out there for any preseason game. The Chiefs have a deep and talented backfield with Charles, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. We think Charles should be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, and he should put up low-end RB1 numbers in 2016.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles practices in full    Thu Aug 18, 11:05 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) practiced in full Thursday, Aug. 18, for the first time. He won't play in the second preseason game, though.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him, even though they have an incredibly deep backfield. In fact, it could be that depth is influencing that decision as well, since they need to decide what to do with all their RBs. Getting Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Knile Davis some more burn could help them make a decision. Of course, the Chiefs know you can never have too many backs. The guy to own here is Charles as an RB1, but handcuffing him with West or Ware isn't a terrible idea.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles does more work    Wed Aug 17, 12:02 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was limited Wednesday, Aug. 17, but he got through a larger workload than he did the previous day.

Footballguys view: Charles is on track to play Week 1, and while the team could use Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West to ease him in, he will have every chance to return his second-round draft pick value as long as he can handle it.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles returns    Tue Aug 16, 09:17 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, and he's participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: It appears that Charles is on schedule to resume his role as the lead back for the Chiefs in Week 1 against the Chargers. The team likes backups Charchandrick West and Spencer Ware a lot and could ease Charles in early in the season, but as long as he looks like the player he has been during his Hall of Fame level career, he'll be an easy RB1 in fantasy leagues again this year.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware caps first drive with TD    Sat Aug 13, 05:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware got the start with RB Jamaal Charles (knee) still on the Physically Unable to Perform list and did not disappoint in the team's preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 13, running for 24 yards on five carries and converting on a 1-yard plunge early in the first quarter.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented backup, and he would be a valuable fantasy asset if starter Jamaal Charles goes down with another injury. He's worth picking up as a late-round flier or to jock-block the Charles owner.

Chiefs | GM hopeful about Jamaal Charles    Wed Aug 10, 04:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said he is hopeful that RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Dorsey was "optimistic" and so are we. Charles hasn't been taken off of the PUP yet, but he has come all the way back from ACL surgery before. The Chiefs have two strong backups in Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, so they might Charles back in to start the season. He's still worth a second-round pick and should return first-round value in PPR leagues once he's back up to speed.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles placed on PUP    Wed Jul 27, 11:45 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Charles is going to get eased into action. This gives more opportunity for talented backups Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Reports indicate that Ware will actually be the backup to Charles. However, we've also heard that West is going to play a role in this offense--even with Charles healthy and starting. Stay dialed into this situation as camp/preseason rolls on.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't be limited    Tue Jul 26, 11:22 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) workload won't be limited if he's healthy and returns to the player he was before his knee injury, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Charles will be the lead back for the Chiefs once again this year, but expect the team to use backup Charcandrick West as some sort of change-of-pace back. We like Charles as a top-10 fantasy RB this year, and West could perform like a RB4/flex option so long as Charles is healthy.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware considered the backup    Tue Jul 19, 06:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is viewed as the backup running back behind RB Jamaal Charles, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher. Teicher did say that Ware and RB Charcandrick West would both play if Charles was injured.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented runner who could easily carry the load for the Chiefs if necessary. We feel West is going to play a role--at least as a change-of-pace back behind Charles. If something were to happen to Charles, Ware could take over as the lead back with West continuing his valuable part-time play.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will not be rushed    Fri Jun 17, 07:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was able to participate in some drills during minicamp, but head coach Andy Reid said the team will not rush Charles back to the lineup.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are being wisely cautious here. Charles is likely to be a RB1 for fantasy owners when healthy, but he's no longer a top-5 player at his position if Charcandrick West gets used a bit more. West proved last year that he can be dangerous with the rock in his hands, and there are rumblings that he's going to have a role on offense...even though Charles is going to be back. Charles has a current ADP of RB7 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles may take part in minicamp    Sun Jun 12, 05:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may be able to participate in some drills during the mandatory minincamp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles has not participated in organized team activities because he is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: If he does end up participating in minicamp, it will be on a very limited capacity. There's no need to rush him back and risk further injury. Charles should be 100 percent healthy (or close enough) by the start of the regular season. Fantasy owners need to recognize that the Chiefs will use Charcandrick West a bit more...even with Charles back as the starter. That dings Charles' fantasy value a bit, and it makes West a sure-fire handcuff.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could return soon    Sat Jun 11, 03:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) might participate in team drills during minicamp next week, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: The team is going to take it easy on Charles as he comes back from this injury. The plan is to have him ready for training camp and starting for Week 1 of the regular season. Charles may be more of a top-10 fantasy RB this year instead of a top-5 fantasy RB because of the emergence of Charcandrick West.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't work until camp    Thu Jun 2, 01:53 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) made an appearance at practice Wednesday, June 1, wearing a jersey and shorts without a helmet. However, he did not practice, and he is not expected to participate in practice until training begins in July, at the earliest.

Footballguys view: We would be less concerned if Charles wasn't coming off his second ACL injury at 30 but even being worried about that won't stop us from feeling like he is RB1 material. It does put him in the lower half of that category, though. Fantasy owners need to note that the Chiefs are likely to use Charcandrick West in the offense--even if Charles is at full strength.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited in OTAs    Thu May 19, 01:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be limited in organized team activities, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him to make sure he's OK to go for the season and we see him as a borderline RB1/RB2 this year. After turning 30, we hope he can regain the form that had him lighting up fantasy leagues last season, but we aren't 100% sure it can happen. He remains a very productive and talented back.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles has been running    Tue Apr 19, 01:43 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been running but isn't cutting in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. 'I'll be ready,' Charles said of being back out there for training camp. 'I can't wait.'

Footballguys view: Charles is going to be one of the best backs in the league again this year. However, his workload could be cut into by Charcandrick West. Fantasy owners need to recognize that West is too talented to be left on the sideline, and this will impact the fantasy value of both.

Chiefs | No OTAs for Jamaal Charles    Mon Apr 18, 02:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) said he probably won't participate in organized team activities, but he should be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Charles should be ready to go for training camp, and he'll once again be the lead back for the Chiefs. However, Charcandrick West is too talented to keep off the field. We'll see some sort of RBBC that features both RBs in 2016.

Dolphins | Knile Davis among Dolphins' pursuit    Thu Mar 31, 02:47 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis is a player the Miami Dolphins have expressed interest in. Davis is believed to be on the trade block. The Dolphins also expressed interest in RBs Jamaal Charles, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, but those talks appeared to go nowhere.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are looking to replace Lamar Miller and while they believe in Jay Ajayi, they need better insurance behind him. Davis has played well in spots and we'd like to see what he can do full time. He would be a solid fit in Miami.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will be ready    Tue Mar 22, 09:16 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been working out at the team's facility and will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Charles played in five games last year before injuring his knee and missing the rest of the season. In 2016, Charles should get back his starting job but fantasy owners need to realize that Charcandrick West will also play a role. Filling in for an injured Charles, West proved last year that he's too good to keep off the field.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles not going anywhere    Fri Feb 26, 01:20 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not be cut, according to general manager John Dorsey. 'He will be an important piece of this team moving forward,' Dorsey said.

Footballguys view: Why would he go anywhere? Dorsey said (again) that Charles is ahead in the recovery process as he works back from the knee injury that cut his 2015 season short. Charles will be the lead back, but team sources indicate that Charcandrick West did enough to earn a role on the offense too.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles likely to stay    Thu Feb 18, 02:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee), who is apparently ahead in his rehab from a knee injury, is likely to remain with the Chiefs in 2016, according to general manager John Dorsey. 'Well, as I look at it right now, Jamaal ... I think he may be ahead of schedule in terms of his rehabilitation,' Dorsey said. 'The guy is an extremely talented player. Love him to death. Love how dirty-tough he is. Yeah, he's a Chief.' The Chiefs could save around $5.3 million by releasing Charles.

Footballguys view: Charles is getting on in years (29) and the Chiefs are likely looking to the future but it's hard to imagine not having him in the Chiefs' colors next year. We think he'll come back at close to 100% but the Chiefs might have him split time with Spencer Ware or Charcandrick West as they prepare for life without him.

Chiefs | Decision time on Jamaal Charles    Sat Jan 23, 06:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was hurt and then the team went on average 135.9 yards - fifth in the league - in 11 regular season games with RBs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware. He has a $2 million report-to-training camp bonus due in July, and he could be asked to take a pay cut and/or relinquish that bonus to return while earning it back through incentives.

Footballguys view: Charles can still be a superstar in the NFL, and the Chiefs should use him as much as possible in 2016. However, both West and Ware looked great starting this year and they could be worked into the mix a bit this season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles ahead of schedule?    Fri Jan 22, 10:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may be ahead of schedule as he rehabs from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: That would be great news for the Chiefs, Charles and fantasy owners. He'll return as their lead back, but with Spencer Ware playing so well we could see him get a tiny bit of playing time behind Charles as their power change-of-pace back. Charcandrick West did a fine job as the starter, and he may also get a bit of action when Charles needs a breather.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will be back    Thu Jan 21, 03:32 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be back for the start of the regular season this year, according to general manager John Dorsey. 'The guy is an extremely talented player,' Dorsey said. 'I love him to death, love how dirty tough he is. Yeah, he's a Chief.' Charles missed all but five games in 2015 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Footballguys view: We'll see if he is able to recapture his form. Coming back from ACL surgery, even at his age, isn't impossible. That said, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware both played well and we could see a committee even if Charles is 100 percent.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West was strong in place of RB Jamaal Charles (knee) on Sunday, Oct. 25. West ran for 110 yards on 22 carries and scored one touchdown in a 23-13 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Footballguys view: West should be worth a look against the Lions in London as a flex play now that he has separated from Knile Davis.

Chiefs | KC eager to see Charcandrick West    Sat Oct 17, 06:35 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Charcandrick West has the team eager to see what he can do in Week 6. 'Quietly, they kind of like West,' ESPN.com's Adam Teicher said. 'The term has been used to me, 'a poor man's Jamaal Charles.' They think there are a lot of similarities in how they go about business. Now, he's not as good as Charles, don't mistake that. But they're kind of eager to see what he can do.' Teicher said RB Knile Davis could get more of the goal-line opportunities because he's the bigger back. But the Chiefs might prefer West in every other situation since he's a much better pass-catcher, a more versatile runner and likely at least as good in pass protection. Teicher doesn't expect any running back to carry the load the way Charles did. But if one does emerge in that role down the road, West has a better chance than Davis.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners are eager to see West as well. He's getting first crack at the starting job, but reports indicate that Knile Davis will be used as well.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on the Reserve/Injured list Tuesday, Oct. 13. Charles tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Week 5 and will miss the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: Sad news for the Chiefs here. Without Charles, the offense should sputter with Alex Smith at QB. The team will try to replace Charles with a RBBC featuring Charcandrick West and Knile Davis. Good luck with that.

Chiefs | Torn ACL for Jamaal Charles    Mon Oct 12, 05:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) MRI confirmed a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to a source. Charles will likely miss the rest of the season.

Footballguys view: This was feared, and now the Chiefs will move forward without Charles. Charcandrick West and Knile Davis will likely split time in a RBBC without Charles on the field. We feel that Davis is the more talented back, but West is the first back up as Davis seems to be in the doghouse this year. The team will need both in order to have a halfway decent rushing attack. This is a huge kick in the midsection for the Chiefs offense.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles to undergo MRI exam Monday    Sun Oct 11, 04:26 PM

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles may have torn ACL    Sun Oct 11, 03:46 PM

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may have suffered a torn ACL during Week 5's game against the Chicago Bears based on initial tests, according to a source with knowledge of the injury. The team will receive more information after he undergoes an MRI exam. Charles exited the game during the third quarter after suffering a non-contact injury to his right knee and had to be helped off the field by two trainers.

Footballguys view: It certainly looked like it could be that bad. Charles is 29 and it might be asking a lot for him to be an RB1 in fantasy leagues again in his career if this is indeed a torn ACL, although Charles came back from his first torn ACL just as good as before.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles helped off the field    Sun Oct 11, 02:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (undisclosed) was helped off the field after suffering a possible knee injury during the team's Week 5 game.

Footballguys view: It was a non-contact injury and Charles did not put weight on his leg as he was being helped off of the field. There's a large range of possibilities here, but none involve him coming back this week. Charcandrick West has overtaken Knile Davis as Charles' backup, but both would have a chance to be relevant in fantasy leagues if Charles is out for a long time.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles had 11 carries for 75 yards and six catches for 70 yards in a 36-21 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals in Week 4.

Footballguys view: Charles got a little dinged up in the first half, but he was explosive on all of his touches. The Chiefs couldn't find the end zone and he was a still a good start. Next week against the Bears should be another strong game for Charles.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles rushed 11 times for 49 yards and three touchdowns in the Week 3 game against the Green Bay Packers, and he added five receptions for 33 yards on seven targets.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs fell down early and had to abandon the rushing attack. They still used Charles as he's a dangerous weapon and fine receiver out of the backfield. As they made their comeback, Charles was a big part.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has averaged 5.47 yards per carry in his career, which is the highest average among running backs that have at least 750 carries in their career.

Footballguys view: Charles has been fantastic this season. Fantasy owners who took a RB super early in the draft have not been disappointed. Fantasy owners who took a RB in the last part of the first round or early part of the second round might be incredibly disappointed. Charles was worth a top-3 pick in every league, and he's performing like one.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles had 125 yards rushing, a touchdown and two fumbles on 21 carries and had four catches for two yards in a 31-24 loss to the Denver Broncos Thursday, Sept. 17.

Footballguys view: Charles was sensational against a tough defense, although the fumbles will stick with him. He had a fumbling issue back in college at Texas, but otherwise there's no reason to think this will become a trend. He'll be a strong RB1 again at Green Bay next week.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles ran for only 71 yards on 17 carries against the Denver Broncos last season. In the second game he faced Denver, he injured his ankle and had only two carries for four yards.

Footballguys view: We think Charles will do better this year, though the Broncos front seven handled Justin Forsett well enough. It helped that the Ravens have few receiving options, but then again that is the case with Kansas City as well. we still think Charles is an RB1 play this week.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited Friday    Fri Aug 7, 08:31 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles sat out most of the contact drills during practice Friday, Aug. 7, because the team wants to keep him fresh.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was emphasized in the screen game during practice Saturday, Aug. 1, and in one drill, nine straight passes were thrown to running backs.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs didn't throw a touchdown to a wide receiver at all last year. The arrival of Jeremy Maclin should change that, but this team is still going to target Charles plenty as a receiver out of the backfield.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles said he feels healthy, eating right and doing yoga. 'I'm doing everything I am supposed to do to keep my body up at my age. Charles added that he feels like he's 20 or 21 years old again.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners know what they'll get from Charles. The Chiefs have to be better passing the ball this year if they want to be a playoff team, but the centerpiece of the offense is Charles and the ground game. If healthy, he should finish as a top-5 fantasy RB in 2015.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles the total package    Sun Jul 12, 08:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles has ranked in the top three in total touchdowns in each of the last two seasons, recording a league-high 19 in 2013 and 14 last year.

Footballguys view: Charles was by his own admission banged up last year with nagging injuries that affected him for most of the season. If it's a sign of his body wearing down as he turns 29 before the new year, then he'll be a disappointing top 5 pick in fantasy drafts. If it was an aberration and Charles is closer to 100% for more of this year, he'll make anyone who takes him early in the first very happy.

Charles said he would try to come back early and work with the Chief's strength and conditioning coach to get more in shape and back in the groove.

Footballguys view: All players get away before the start of training camp. The best ones come back early to begin training before the dog days of August. Even with better weapons in the passing game, the Chiefs offense is all about Charles. Fantasy owners should look at him as a top-5 pick once again this year.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles plans on playing a while    Sun Jun 14, 07:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles will turn 29 by the end of the 2015 season, but he said he has no plans on slowing down and wants to play another six years. '(The game) has changed,' Charles said. 'They've got all kinds of technology now, all kinds of medicine people have come up with to stay healthy.'

Footballguys view: Running backs seem to have much shorter career arcs than they used to. Charles can shoulder a smaller workload (around 210 carries) and still produce as an effective starting running back for the Chiefs. That plus his all-purpose skill set could have him sticking around in the NFL longer than some would expect. Charles could play six more seasons, even if towards the end of his career he became more of a change-of-pace back.

Chargers | Melvin Gordon compared to Jamaal Charles    Fri Jun 12, 10:47 PM

San Diego Chargers RB Melvin Gordon has been compared to Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles by multiple teammates because of his size, speed and patience.

Footballguys view: Yeah, we're not buying that comparison--the same one that was tossed around in the pre-draft process. His acceleration is Charles-like, but the rookie needs to be more decisive as a runner. Almost 20 percent of his carries (19.2) were stopped for a loss or no gain in college. Instead of dancing behind the line of scrimmage (or bouncing too many runs outside), Gordon needs to learn how to take what the defense gives him at the pro level. Gordon's speed and starter's workload make him an attractive option for fantasy owners looking for a RB2.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles wants team to address OL    Mon Apr 20, 07:23 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles wants the team to address the offensive line situation in the upcoming NFL Draft. Charles told media 'it was challenging last year playing with guys... some got hurt, some got suspended. So it was hard playing. I never knew how crucial it was to my career that I needed linemen.'

Footballguys view: Message! We'll see if the Chiefs respond to their superstars request. Charles barely rushed for over 1,000 yards last season, but he still was able to average 5.0 yards per carry. With improved offensive line play, we could see Charles produce more like he did in 2012 when he finished with over 1,500 yards on the ground.
