Broncos | Jamaal Charles will play plenty    Mon Aug 21, 04:00 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will see a lot of playing time in Week 3 of the preseason, according to head coach Vance Joseph.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles won't play Saturday    Tue Aug 15, 02:08 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not play Saturday, Aug. 19, against the San Francisco 49ers, according to head coach Vance Joseph. He will play in Week 3 of the preseason, however.

Footballguys view: Charles is fully cleared to participate in Broncos camp but he rarely does much of anything in practice. Joseph says the decision to hold him back is on himself and that Charles wanted to play in the first preseason game against the Bears. If Charles can be a shadow of his former self, he could make the team as a reserve runner. If his knees are shot, then Charles might not make the 53-man roster.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles may be scratch against 49ers    Mon Aug 14, 07:26 AM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may not play in the second exhibition game Saturday, Aug. 19, against the San Francisco 49ers.

Footballguys view: He didn't play in the team's first game against the Bears either. Broncos head coach Vance Joseph says they have a plan for Charles, but he won't reveal what that plan is. Now, it just seems the plan for Charles is to rest him as much as possible. He's fully cleared to participate in practice, but Charles rarely receives much work in team drills. That has slowly ramped up...a little bit...since the start of training camp.

Broncos | Denver RBs taking it easy this week    Tue Aug 8, 01:54 PM

Denver Broncos RB C.J. Anderson will play no more than three series, while RB Jamaal Charles will not play at all in the team's preseason opener against the Chicago Bears on Thursday, Aug. 10.

Footballguys view: Anderson will get a drive or two against the Bears on Thursday night. No matter who is the quarterback, we expect the Broncos to surprise some with how much they want to run the ball in 2017. We all know the story with Anderson...if healthy, he's got the skill set to be a top-15 fantasy back. Having never played a full 16-game season in his pro career, fantasy owners already know a backup plan must be in place if Anderson is their RB2.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles to be more involved    Mon Jul 31, 10:03 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will receive more work during practice Wednesday, Aug. 2, according to head coach Vance Joseph.

Footballguys view: Charles has been limited to individual work since camp began but is expected to participate in seven-on-seven drills this week and may participate in team drills next week. If healthy, Charles will compete to be a change-of-pace back behind C.J. Anderson. Charles thinks he can still be 'the man' but he hasn't been the same in two seasons trying to work through knee problems.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles pegged for light work    Mon Jul 31, 08:49 AM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles is expected to receive eight to 10 touches per game this season if he makes the team. Charles said he has zero knee pain for now.

Footballguys view: Charles is fully cleared for training camp, but the Broncos are being careful. The veteran running back has a chip on his shoulder about getting released by the Chiefs. Holding him back in camp is the best idea, but he might be fuming because of it. If healthy, Charles could at least be a Danny Woodhead-like back in the Mike McCoy system.

Broncos | Juwan Thompson serves as backup    Thu Jul 27, 10:11 PM

Denver Broncos RB Juwan Thompson served as the backup to RB C.J. Anderson during training camp Thursday, July 27, with RB Devontae Booker (wrist) and RB Jamaal Charles not practicing.

Footballguys view: Sixth-rounder De'Angelo Henderson will push Thompson for a roster spot and he should get a long look in preseason games with Booker out and Charles getting the veteran treatment.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles not practicing    Thu Jul 27, 10:06 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles did not practice with the rest of the team Thursday, July 27.

Footballguys view: The team will take it slowly with Charles, but he has no limitations and will at least have a sizable role as a pass-catching back as long as he's healthy. Charles could surprise and get close to previous form, turning this into a true RBBC, but his workload will have to be managed in any event.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles cleared for full participation    Wed Jul 26, 01:53 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles will be eased in slowly, but he has been cleared to participate fully in training camp, according to the Denver Post's Nicki Jhabvala.

Footballguys view: Charles is salty since the Chiefs released him. He's basically missed the last two years due to knee problems. If healthy, Charles is going to push C.J. Anderson for playing time. Anderson himself has to stay healthy and keep second-year pro Devontae Booker at bay in addition to Charles.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles cutting, doing everything    Thu Jun 29, 08:11 AM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) said he has been cutting and doing everything on his surgically repaired left knee, and he finally feels normal. 'I feel like the way I am cutting that I am back to the normal me, man. It feels good to be moving around again,' said Charles, who was limited to eight games the past two seasons because of knee injuries. 'I have (known) this the whole offseason (that the knee was fine). Nobody can take nothing away from me except God when my time is up. I am still 30 years old. I still have a lot of special stuff to do.'

Footballguys view: It's good to hear he is feeling back to normal, but a 30-year old back coming off of knee issues--over the course of two years no less--is unlikely to be able to sustain a high level of play for a whole season. We think it more likely he is a change-of-pace back who gets a decent amount of touches and, as long as he is healthy, can produce consistent points. That said, he's not going to do so in a way that gives you more than flex type points. Right now his ADP is hovering at 132 overall and 47 among backs.

Broncos | No team drills for Jamaal Charles    Tue Jun 13, 02:33 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not participate in team drills during the Broncos' three-day minicamp. He will do some work with his helmet on, however.

Footballguys view: Charles has taken some handoffs during individual drills but that's it. He still thinks he can be 'the man' and Charles seems rather salty after the Chiefs let him go. If his knees hold up, we think Charles works best in a limited role as a change-of-pace back behind starter C.J. Anderson.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles takes part in drills    Mon Jun 5, 06:43 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) participated in some light drills with the running backs during organized team activities Monday, June 5.

Footballguys view: Charles was out there for 1-on-1 drills with the Broncos for the first time this offseason. The team is easing him back into action as he returns from the knee injury that bothered him each of the last two years. Charles feels he can still be "the man" but he's likely going to be the change-of-pace back for the Broncos behind C.J. Anderson.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles ready by training camp?    Tue May 23, 04:34 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles (knee) hopes to be ready for action by training camp, according to head coach Vance Joseph. Charles will rehabilitate and get back to good health during organized team activities.

Footballguys view: The Broncos are giving Charles the time he needs to get as close to full strength as he possibly can. When healthy (perhaps in training camp), Charles will compete with C.J. Anderson and Devontae Booker for touches/snaps in the backfield. Charles could work in a RBBC behind Anderson, and he could at least be a pass-catching back for the team.

Broncos | Denver plans on using RB committee in '17    Tue May 23, 12:36 AM

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph is planning on using a running-back-by-committee system in the upcoming season. 'You need two or three guys that can carry the load,' Joseph said. 'It is no longer a one-guy position. I'm excited to have Jamaal (Charles), C.J. (Anderson), (Devontae Booker), even De'Angelo (Henderson) in the mix there. It's a good group. It's going to be competitive, and that's the way it should be.'

Footballguys view: This is not news. The Broncos don't have a lead back as Anderson hasn't been able to stay healthy for a full 16 games. They'll use Charles (if healthy) as a change-of-pace back behind Anderson. Booker will be used as a spot runner and potential starter if Anderson is injured again. Anderson has the most fantasy value, and his current ADP is RB17 (4.06) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles not a lock for roster    Thu May 18, 09:09 PM

Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles has a 50 percent chance to make the 53-man roster, according to beat writer Mike Klis.

Footballguys view: Charles suffered a meniscus injury in the same right knee that had ACL surgery after a season-ending injury in 2015 and ended up having surgery on both knees after his 2016 ended. He should be ready for training camp, but how ready will that be? It feels like he's going to be behind the eight ball with CJ Anderson and Devontae Booker having plenty of time to get used to the offense. Charles hasn't really been great the last few seasons anyway and we think he's on the wrong side of his career and is likely destined for a minimal role in Denver.

Broncos | Open competition at RB in Denver    Fri May 12, 03:14 PM

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph told reporters Friday, May 12, there will be competition for the starting running back job in training camp, presumably between C.J. Anderson, Jamaal Charles and Devontae Booker.

Footballguys view: Anderson has to be considered the frontrunner at this time. Charles has not been himself over the last two years, and he might be best suited as a change-of-pace back. Booker did struggle as a rookie but he led the team in rushing last year, and he was the Broncos third-leading receiver in 2016. We'll see this unfold in training camp.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles confident in his knee    Tue May 2, 08:29 PM

In a conference call with Broncos reporters, newly signed running back Jamaal Charles expressed confidence in his knee. "I've been working out, I feel good. I feel confident in my knee." Charles said.

Footballguys view: Charles has missed most of the last two years due to knee problems. Charles admits that last year he just wasn't healthy and that was certainly the case as he registered a career low 3.3 YPC on only 12 carries in just three games. If healthy, Charles should work as a part-time back behind starter C.J. Anderson. Charles will be filling a Danny Woodhead-like role for the Broncos. We should see him eased into action this offseason with the plan for him to fully participate in training camp.

Broncos | One-year deal for Jamaal Charles    Tue May 2, 05:30 PM

Updating a previous report, Denver Broncos RB Jamaal Charles' deal is one year in length and worth up to $3.75 million, according to a source.

Footballguys view: That makes sense. The Broncos weren't going to overcommit to the veteran back due to injury history and age.

Broncos | Jamaal Charles joining Broncos    Tue May 2, 05:26 PM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) will sign with the Denver Broncos after agreeing to terms Tuesday, May 2, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Charles stays in the AFC West here. If healthy, Charles has the speed and elusiveness to score anytime he touches the ball. We anticipate he'll be working in a RBBC with C.J. Anderson. The Broncos need to monitor Charles' touches in order to keep him fresh and healthy. In a part-time role (but in a Mike McCoy offense), Charles could have at least RB4/flex fantasy value.

Broncos | Denver may sign Jamaal Charles    Tue May 2, 02:27 PM

Broncos | Jamaal Charles will visit Broncos    Mon May 1, 03:01 PM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) is scheduled to visit the Denver Broncos Tuesday, May 2.

Footballguys view: Charles be close to "E" when it comes to gas left in the tank on his pro career. He hasn't been healthy in two years and may have lost the speed that made him such a dangerous pro. If added by the Broncos, Charles would be a part-time player as a change-of-pace back behind starter C.J. Anderson.

Seahawks | Jamaal Charles leaves Seattle with no deal    Thu Mar 16, 08:25 PM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) 'had a good visit' with the Seattle Seahawks Thursday, March 16, but ultimately left without signing a contract. Charles also may be visiting another team next week, though the identity of that franchise isn't known.

Footballguys view: With Eddie Lacy signed, it's hard to imagine the Seahawks are going to spend more money at the position, especially on an aging back who has been banged up. Charles should land somewhere but it will be as a backup we bet.

Seahawks | Jamaal Charles will meet with Seattle Wednesday    Mon Mar 13, 05:37 PM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) will visit the Seattle Seahawks Wednesday, March 15, and Thursday, March 16, according to a source.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks are looking for help in the backfield, and if healthy that's what Charles can provide. He may not be the same back he used to be, but Charles could at least fill a role as a change-of-pace back for a team like Seattle.

Seahawks | Jamaal Charles to meet with Seattle    Sun Mar 12, 07:12 PM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) is scheduled to meet with the Seattle Seahawks in the near future.

Seahawks | Jamaal Charles has mutual interest in SEA    Thu Mar 9, 08:27 AM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) has mutual interest in the Seattle Seahawks, according to sources.

Footballguys view: The Seahawks are going to keep trying to figure out the backfield. Coming off an injury-plagued season, Charles may still have something left in the tank, though he would be fighting with Thomas Rawls, CJ Prosise and Alex Collins for snaps.

NFL | Jamaal Charles not attracting much interest    Sun Mar 5, 01:03 PM

Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) is finding a cool market for his services at the 2017 NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis.

Footballguys view: Charles has only played in eight games over the last two years and he was released by Kansas City on a failed physical designation. The Eagles could have the most interest in Charles, but he's not likely to get anything more than a "prove it" one-year deal.

Eagles | Philly to consider Jamaal Charles    Wed Mar 1, 09:19 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Doug Pederson suggested Wednesday, March 1, he will look into whether or not free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) is a fit in Philadelphia. Pederson served as Charles' offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs from 2013-15.

Footballguys view: We could see Charles worked in as a receiver out of the backfield and change-of-pace runner for the Eagles. The price tag has to be right, but the Eagles may be the best destination for Charles due to his previous working relationship with Pederson.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles failed physical    Tue Feb 28, 09:03 PM

Updating a previous story, Free-agent RB Jamaal Charles (Chiefs) was released Tuesday, Feb. 28, with a 'failed physical' designation.

Footballguys view: The health of his knees will determine how many are lined up to sign the veteran back. He could still work as a change-of-pace back with the right team. We could see a team like the Cowboys adding him.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles released    Tue Feb 28, 03:13 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles was released Tuesday, Feb. 28.

Footballguys view: This move was expected as the Chiefs need cap space and releasing Charles frees up $6.2 million. Charles is reportedly healthy, but he's only played eight games over the last two years and hasn't played a full 16-game season since 2012. We feel teams like the Cowboys could show interest in Charles as a change-of-pace back.

Eagles | Jamaal Charles an option for Eagles?    Sat Feb 25, 02:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles could be an option for the Philadelphia Eagles if he is released by the Chiefs, in the opinion of ESPN.com's Tim McManus.

Footballguys view: The move would make sense for both sides. The Eagles will be looking to add at running back this offseason and Charles has worked with head coach Doug Pederson when Pederson was the offensive coordinator of the Chiefs.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles expected to be released    Sun Feb 12, 05:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles is expected to be released this offseason in order for the team to create salary cap space.

Footballguys view: Charles has a $6.1 million cap number in 2017, and there's no dead money remaining on his contract. The Chiefs have only $4 million in cap space, and they want to sign both DT Dontari Poe and S Eric Berry to long-term deals. Releasing Charles is a virtual lock.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles hopes to be ready for 2017    Thu Feb 9, 01:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is working hard in order to be ready for the 2017 season, according to general manager John Dorsey. Dorsey said he does not know what will happen in March but sees Charles as a member of the team at this point.

Footballguys view: The backfield didn't perform quite as well as we expected, so Charles might actually have a place when he returns. We see the backfield as a bit of a mess in that case, though Spencer Ware has the highest upside of the group.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could be released    Sun Jan 22, 12:42 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles may be a candidate to be released this offseason because he is scheduled to make $7 million in 2017 and dealt with knee injuries this season.

Footballguys view: It's a brutal game y'all. It would be great to see Charles end his career with the Chiefs, but the business side of things always kicks in at some point. His $7 million cap number won't fly, so expect things to change for the veteran back. Charles could return if the two sides can agree on a restructured contract.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) stated on his website recently that he wants to continue playing.

Footballguys view: Charles has a $7 million cap number in 2017, and the Chiefs might want to move on with that salary (and no dead money left on the contract). Over the last two years, Charles has only played in eight games. When healthy, Charles still has the speed to gash defenses quickly. He'd get some interest on the open market if the Chiefs release him.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) could return to the field this season thanks to his second knee scope. A return in late December or in the playoffs is still possible. Without the second scope, Charles would not have been able to return at all this season.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Monday, Nov. 14.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could return this year    Thu Nov 3, 08:22 AM

Updating previous reports, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) had successful surgery Wednesday, Nov. 2, and there's a chance he could return this year.

Footballguys view: We don't know what the backfield will look like at that point, as Spencer Ware is currently hurt. Charcandrick West gets the start this week against Jacksonville and is a solid RB1 start. Charles may not get much burn when he gets back and "when" that happens is ephemeral, so don't kill yourself keeping him on the roster if another, better option who can contribute now is on the waiver wire.

Footballguys view: Charles has his season cut short as he's likely done for the year. By cutting him open, the doctors should be able to see what's been the problem.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been placed on injured reserve Tuesday, Nov. 1. After visiting Dr. James Andrews, it appears Charles will need a second surgery on his surgically-repaired knee. The severity is unclear.

Footballguys view: Doctors don't seem to know what is causing the pain in Charles' knee. He'll likely be shut down for the year, and the Chiefs will turn to guys like Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware in his absence. Ware has a concussion, and we'll have to see if he can be cleared to resume practicing later this week.
