Chiefs | KC remaining cautious with Jamaal Charles    Mon Sep 26, 02:00 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) appears to have a decent chance to make his season debut in Week 4 against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Head coach Andy Reid admitted the team is being 'very cautious' in regards to Charles.

Footballguys view: With the way that Spencer Ware is running, the Chiefs have no need to rush Charles back into action. We could see him this week against the Steelers, but if Charles does play we'd expect him to be quite limited in his first week back.

The Kansas City Chiefs have declared WR De'Anthony Thomas, OT Jah Reid, RB Jamaal Charles, CB Kenneth Acker, OG Parker Ehinger, LB Sam Barrington, QB Tyler Bray inactive for Week 3.

Footballguys view: Spencer Ware will get another start, but expectations are lower against the rough Jets run defense.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't play Sunday    Sun Sep 25, 09:56 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not play in Week 3's game against the New York Jets, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Spencer Ware gets another start. He's not as attractive against the tough Jets defense, but his heavy involvement in the passing game makes him game script proof. Consider Ware a solid RB2 this week despite the matchup.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles doubtful for Week 3    Fri Sep 23, 03:55 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is unlikely to play in Week 3 against the New York Jets. While most of his work in practice this week was on the scout team, head coach Andy Reid said Charles saw a bit of first-team work as well.

Footballguys view: It's difficult to make sense out of this because Charles was reportedly looking good all summer and activated from the PUP list on August 16th. He could have had a setback, but then his practice with the scout team doesn't make sense while he is healing. It is a fishy situation, which means we don't want to undersell Spencer Ware in trade talks or give up full value to get Charles. We can't be sure what we are getting when he returns, or when he will return.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles still limited Thursday    Thu Sep 22, 06:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was a limited participant in practice for the second day in a row Thursday, September 22.

Footballguys view: We should see Spencer Ware as the lead back for the Chiefs on Sunday. Charles is likely to be shut down for a bit longer.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles likely to sit again    Thu Sep 22, 01:58 AM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is likely to sit again in Week 3. Head coach Andy Reid said Wednesday, Sept. 21, that 'another week is going to help him. We'll just see.'

Footballguys view: If that's the case, Spencer Ware could be a nice addition to your lineup as a solid RB2. The Jets are tough, but Ware should be able to find some room to move.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) 'looked better' in practice last week, but head coach Andy Reid was noncommittal when asked about his status for Week 3 against the New York Jets.

Footballguys view: Even if Charles plays, the team is likely to ease him into the lineup. This situation is worth monitoring -- especially for those waiting on Charles return. However, don't immediately plug him in with your starters his first week back.

The Kansas City Chiefs have declared WR De'Anthony Thomas, RB Jamaal Charles, CB Kenneth Acker, OT Laurent Duvernay-Tardif, OG Parker Ehinger, LB Sam Barrington, QB Tyler Bray inactive for Week 2.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could play next week    Sun Sep 18, 10:02 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is expected to make his season debut against the New York Jets in Week 3, according to a source.

Footballguys view: Charles won't be trustworthy against a tough Jets run defense, but it will be comforting for his fantasy owners to see him out there nonetheless. Spencer Ware's run in our lineups will likely end next week, but he should stashed as the highest value handcuff this side of DeAngelo Williams. It is also possible that the Chiefs keep Ware more involved after his stellar Week 1 performance.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles tabbed doubtful for Week 2    Fri Sep 16, 03:06 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is considered doubtful to play in the team's Week 2 game Sunday, September 18, versus the Houston Texans.

Footballguys view: Charles isn't going to be rushed back with Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West playing well and both able to handle three downs. It's hard to say if he had a setback or is just slow getting back on the field, but Charles was activated from the PUP list a month ago and he is practicing with the scout team, so something doesn't quite add up here.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles still limited    Thu Sep 15, 09:57 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 15.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited Wednesday    Wed Sep 14, 06:33 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 14.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will practice    Wed Sep 14, 01:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is practicing Wednesday, Sept. 14, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Charles may be practicing, but that's no guarantee that he's going to play. Spencer Ware should once again lead the way for the Chiefs on the ground -- even if Charles plays.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could sit again    Tue Sep 13, 10:29 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) could sit again in Week 2 as he is the least healthy of the team's four running backs, according to a source.

Footballguys view: With the way that Spencer Ware is playing, there's no need to rush Charles back into the lineup. Even when fully healthy, Ware has earned a big part of a RBBC for the Chiefs. While Charles is out (or limited) make sure Ware is in every single one of your lineups.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't play Sunday    Sun Sep 11, 11:03 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not play in Week 1's game against the San Diego Chargers Sunday, Sept. 11, according to a source. He had been listed as doubtful on the injury report.

Footballguys view: Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West will split the work in the backfield, with Knile Davis maybe getting a few touches, but Ware is the best play. He ran over the Chargers to the tune of 19-148-2 in two meetings last year, and Ware was the feature back in the preseason.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles 'probably' won't play    Fri Sep 9, 03:02 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is considered doubtful for the team's season opener Sunday, September 11, and 'probably' won't play, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West will split the work in this great matchup. Ware was running well ahead of West this summer, but West was listed first on the depth chart this week. Ware's 19-148-2 stat line in two games against the Chargers last year makes him the better play and possible fantasy RB2, although West deserves flex consideration in PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles still limited    Thu Sep 8, 10:51 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) remained a limited participant in practice Thursday, Sept. 8.

Footballguys view: Charles is on the doubtful side of questionable, and even if he is active, he'll likely be eased in with a very limited workload. Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West will split the largest share of touches. While it looked like Ware was the lead back in August, West could get enough work to be a solid flex play with a late move on the depth chart.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited    Wed Sep 7, 06:11 PM

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was limited during practice Wednesday, Sept. 7.

Footballguys view: All outward indications are that Charles is on the doubtful side of questionable, and we certainly can't assume he'll have his full workload if he is active. Spencer Ware is the play here, and a very good one if Charles is inactive.

Chiefs | Jamal Charles will practice    Wed Sep 7, 01:08 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will practice Wednesday, Sept. 7, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: Reid is still making it sound like Charles won't play Sunday vs. San Diego, but this should underscore that Charles isn't on the PUP or otherwise is badly damaged goods right now. If you can get him in the fourth round of late drafts, it could be an outstanding move.

Chiefs | Coach not optimistic about Jamaal Charles    Mon Sep 5, 08:23 PM

Kansas City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said he believes it would be a stretch for RB Jamaal Charles (knee) to play in Week 1.

Footballguys view: Fantasy owners need to be dialed in here. Without Charles, the team will turn to Spencer Ware as the starter. Charcandrick West will be his backup. Charles may not be at full strength for some time, and he may just end up being a committee back in 2016. Both Ware and West are really talented and capable of taking on a larger role -- as they have to now.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles' status uncertain    Fri Sep 2, 04:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) availability for Week 1 is uncertain at this point, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles has not been ruled out, but Reid said Charles could sit out.

Footballguys view: The fact that Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West were getting a lot of carries in practice was already a concern and in fairness, Reid has been saying this for some time. He also has said Charles could play but only in a limited capacity. With the talented backfield they have, an RBBC was always a threat but it looks like it's likely here and soon. Charles' ADP is 16 overall and RB8 right now--that's starting to feel a bit rich.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles unlikely to start opener    Thu Sep 1, 08:35 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is unlikely to start the first game of the season, and if he plays, it won't be a big load, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: This is very concerning to us, as it's the second time in a week Teicher has said something to this effect. We're watching but his current ADP of RB8 and overall ADP of 16 is starting to feel slightly high. We know how deep the backfield is. We could be seeing an RBBC if they want to keep Charles fresh.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles not the starter yet    Tue Aug 30, 10:03 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) recently returned to practice after knee surgery, but he has yet to play in a preseason game. He is unlikely to play Thursday, Sept. 1, in the exhibition finale. He is considered behind schedule, and while there hasn't been a setback, he isn't confirmed as the full-time featured back, either. RB Spencer Ware has taken first-team reps for training camp and the preseason, with RB Charcandrick West also seeing first-team reps. 'For Jamaal, it's (a matter of) getting trust in the leg,' head coach Andy Reid said Tuesday, Aug. 30. 'Every day he does a little bit more and a little bit more and his cuts are a little bit sharper. It's just a matter of time and we're OK there. We're OK with that.'

Footballguys view: The team is deep in the backfield, so there's no need to rush Charles back. They'll ease him back into action and use a RBBC with Charles, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles unlikely this week    Mon Aug 22, 10:08 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) is unlikely to play in the third preseason game, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles should practice more this week, however.

Footballguys view: We don't see the need to run Charles out there for any preseason game. The Chiefs have a deep and talented backfield with Charles, Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. We think Charles should be ready for Week 1 of the regular season, and he should put up low-end RB1 numbers in 2016.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles practices in full    Thu Aug 18, 11:05 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) practiced in full Thursday, Aug. 18, for the first time. He won't play in the second preseason game, though.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him, even though they have an incredibly deep backfield. In fact, it could be that depth is influencing that decision as well, since they need to decide what to do with all their RBs. Getting Charcandrick West, Spencer Ware and Knile Davis some more burn could help them make a decision. Of course, the Chiefs know you can never have too many backs. The guy to own here is Charles as an RB1, but handcuffing him with West or Ware isn't a terrible idea.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles does more work    Wed Aug 17, 12:02 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was limited Wednesday, Aug. 17, but he got through a larger workload than he did the previous day.

Footballguys view: Charles is on track to play Week 1, and while the team could use Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West to ease him in, he will have every chance to return his second-round draft pick value as long as he can handle it.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles returns    Tue Aug 16, 09:17 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was activated from the Physically Unable to Perform list, and he's participating in practice Tuesday, Aug. 16.

Footballguys view: It appears that Charles is on schedule to resume his role as the lead back for the Chiefs in Week 1 against the Chargers. The team likes backups Charchandrick West and Spencer Ware a lot and could ease Charles in early in the season, but as long as he looks like the player he has been during his Hall of Fame level career, he'll be an easy RB1 in fantasy leagues again this year.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware caps first drive with TD    Sat Aug 13, 05:59 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware got the start with RB Jamaal Charles (knee) still on the Physically Unable to Perform list and did not disappoint in the team's preseason opener against the Seattle Seahawks on Saturday, Aug. 13, running for 24 yards on five carries and converting on a 1-yard plunge early in the first quarter.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented backup, and he would be a valuable fantasy asset if starter Jamaal Charles goes down with another injury. He's worth picking up as a late-round flier or to jock-block the Charles owner.

Chiefs | GM hopeful about Jamaal Charles    Wed Aug 10, 04:25 PM

Kansas City Chiefs general manager John Dorsey said he is hopeful that RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be ready for the start of the regular season.

Footballguys view: Dorsey was "optimistic" and so are we. Charles hasn't been taken off of the PUP yet, but he has come all the way back from ACL surgery before. The Chiefs have two strong backups in Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West, so they might Charles back in to start the season. He's still worth a second-round pick and should return first-round value in PPR leagues once he's back up to speed.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles placed on PUP    Wed Jul 27, 11:45 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform list Wednesday, July 27.

Footballguys view: Charles is going to get eased into action. This gives more opportunity for talented backups Spencer Ware and Charcandrick West. Reports indicate that Ware will actually be the backup to Charles. However, we've also heard that West is going to play a role in this offense--even with Charles healthy and starting. Stay dialed into this situation as camp/preseason rolls on.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't be limited    Tue Jul 26, 11:22 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles' (knee) workload won't be limited if he's healthy and returns to the player he was before his knee injury, according to beat writer Adam Teicher.

Footballguys view: Good news for the Chiefs here. Charles will be the lead back for the Chiefs once again this year, but expect the team to use backup Charcandrick West as some sort of change-of-pace back. We like Charles as a top-10 fantasy RB this year, and West could perform like a RB4/flex option so long as Charles is healthy.

Chiefs | Spencer Ware considered the backup    Tue Jul 19, 06:14 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Spencer Ware is viewed as the backup running back behind RB Jamaal Charles, according to ESPN.com's Adam Teicher. Teicher did say that Ware and RB Charcandrick West would both play if Charles was injured.

Footballguys view: Ware is a talented runner who could easily carry the load for the Chiefs if necessary. We feel West is going to play a role--at least as a change-of-pace back behind Charles. If something were to happen to Charles, Ware could take over as the lead back with West continuing his valuable part-time play.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will not be rushed    Fri Jun 17, 07:38 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was able to participate in some drills during minicamp, but head coach Andy Reid said the team will not rush Charles back to the lineup.

Footballguys view: The Chiefs are being wisely cautious here. Charles is likely to be a RB1 for fantasy owners when healthy, but he's no longer a top-5 player at his position if Charcandrick West gets used a bit more. West proved last year that he can be dangerous with the rock in his hands, and there are rumblings that he's going to have a role on offense...even though Charles is going to be back. Charles has a current ADP of RB7 (2.03) in 12-team PPR leagues.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles may take part in minicamp    Sun Jun 12, 05:30 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may be able to participate in some drills during the mandatory minincamp, according to head coach Andy Reid. Charles has not participated in organized team activities because he is rehabbing from a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

Footballguys view: If he does end up participating in minicamp, it will be on a very limited capacity. There's no need to rush him back and risk further injury. Charles should be 100 percent healthy (or close enough) by the start of the regular season. Fantasy owners need to recognize that the Chiefs will use Charcandrick West a bit more...even with Charles back as the starter. That dings Charles' fantasy value a bit, and it makes West a sure-fire handcuff.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles could return soon    Sat Jun 11, 03:37 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) might participate in team drills during minicamp next week, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: The team is going to take it easy on Charles as he comes back from this injury. The plan is to have him ready for training camp and starting for Week 1 of the regular season. Charles may be more of a top-10 fantasy RB this year instead of a top-5 fantasy RB because of the emergence of Charcandrick West.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles won't work until camp    Thu Jun 2, 01:53 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) made an appearance at practice Wednesday, June 1, wearing a jersey and shorts without a helmet. However, he did not practice, and he is not expected to participate in practice until training begins in July, at the earliest.

Footballguys view: We would be less concerned if Charles wasn't coming off his second ACL injury at 30 but even being worried about that won't stop us from feeling like he is RB1 material. It does put him in the lower half of that category, though. Fantasy owners need to note that the Chiefs are likely to use Charcandrick West in the offense--even if Charles is at full strength.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles limited in OTAs    Thu May 19, 01:24 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will be limited in organized team activities, according to head coach Andy Reid.

Footballguys view: They'll be cautious with him to make sure he's OK to go for the season and we see him as a borderline RB1/RB2 this year. After turning 30, we hope he can regain the form that had him lighting up fantasy leagues last season, but we aren't 100% sure it can happen. He remains a very productive and talented back.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been running but isn't cutting in his rehab from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. 'I'll be ready,' Charles said of being back out there for training camp. 'I can't wait.'

Footballguys view: Charles is going to be one of the best backs in the league again this year. However, his workload could be cut into by Charcandrick West. Fantasy owners need to recognize that West is too talented to be left on the sideline, and this will impact the fantasy value of both.

Footballguys view: Zero surprise here. Charles should be ready to go for training camp, and he'll once again be the lead back for the Chiefs. However, Charcandrick West is too talented to keep off the field. We'll see some sort of RBBC that features both RBs in 2016.

Kansas City Chiefs RB Knile Davis is a player the Miami Dolphins have expressed interest in. Davis is believed to be on the trade block. The Dolphins also expressed interest in RBs Jamaal Charles, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware, but those talks appeared to go nowhere.

Footballguys view: The Dolphins are looking to replace Lamar Miller and while they believe in Jay Ajayi, they need better insurance behind him. Davis has played well in spots and we'd like to see what he can do full time. He would be a solid fit in Miami.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles will be ready    Tue Mar 22, 09:16 AM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) has been working out at the team's facility and will be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Charles played in five games last year before injuring his knee and missing the rest of the season. In 2016, Charles should get back his starting job but fantasy owners need to realize that Charcandrick West will also play a role. Filling in for an injured Charles, West proved last year that he's too good to keep off the field.

Updating a previous report, Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) will not be cut, according to general manager John Dorsey. 'He will be an important piece of this team moving forward,' Dorsey said.

Footballguys view: Why would he go anywhere? Dorsey said (again) that Charles is ahead in the recovery process as he works back from the knee injury that cut his 2015 season short. Charles will be the lead back, but team sources indicate that Charcandrick West did enough to earn a role on the offense too.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles likely to stay    Thu Feb 18, 02:07 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee), who is apparently ahead in his rehab from a knee injury, is likely to remain with the Chiefs in 2016, according to general manager John Dorsey. 'Well, as I look at it right now, Jamaal ... I think he may be ahead of schedule in terms of his rehabilitation,' Dorsey said. 'The guy is an extremely talented player. Love him to death. Love how dirty-tough he is. Yeah, he's a Chief.' The Chiefs could save around $5.3 million by releasing Charles.

Footballguys view: Charles is getting on in years (29) and the Chiefs are likely looking to the future but it's hard to imagine not having him in the Chiefs' colors next year. We think he'll come back at close to 100% but the Chiefs might have him split time with Spencer Ware or Charcandrick West as they prepare for life without him.

Chiefs | Decision time on Jamaal Charles    Sat Jan 23, 06:53 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) was hurt and then the team went on average 135.9 yards - fifth in the league - in 11 regular season games with RBs Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware. He has a $2 million report-to-training camp bonus due in July, and he could be asked to take a pay cut and/or relinquish that bonus to return while earning it back through incentives.

Footballguys view: Charles can still be a superstar in the NFL, and the Chiefs should use him as much as possible in 2016. However, both West and Ware looked great starting this year and they could be worked into the mix a bit this season.

Chiefs | Jamaal Charles ahead of schedule?    Fri Jan 22, 10:15 PM

Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles (knee) may be ahead of schedule as he rehabs from surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament, according to general manager John Dorsey.

Footballguys view: That would be great news for the Chiefs, Charles and fantasy owners. He'll return as their lead back, but with Spencer Ware playing so well we could see him get a tiny bit of playing time behind Charles as their power change-of-pace back. Charcandrick West did a fine job as the starter, and he may also get a bit of action when Charles needs a breather.

'The guy is an extremely talented player,' Dorsey said. 'I love him to death, love how dirty tough he is. Yeah, he's a Chief.' Charles missed all but five games in 2015 with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

Footballguys view: We'll see if he is able to recapture his form. Coming back from ACL surgery, even at his age, isn't impossible. That said, Charcandrick West and Spencer Ware both played well and we could see a committee even if Charles is 100 percent.
