Chiefs | Cassel, Chambers working on chemistry     Fri Nov 13, 11:25 AM

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel and WR Chris Chambers are working on building a chemistry with each other. Chambers said one will come as they work with each other and gain experience.

Our view: Their chemistry looked pretty good last week, although most of Chambers production came in garbage time. We expect Chambers 2 TD performance from last week to be his best game of the season.

Chiefs | Cassel throws three picks Week 7    Sun Oct 25, 06:16 PM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel was 10-for-25 for 97 yards with a touchdown pass and three interceptions Week 7 against the San Diego Chargers.

Our view: Cassel and head coach Todd Haley have not been able to create an offense that comes anywhere near to rivaling the success each had last season in New England and Arizona.

Chiefs | Haley open for others to design plays    Fri Oct 9, 12:52 PM

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said he is open for people in the organization to make suggestions about changes to the team's offense. Haley is also open to QB Matt Cassel designing some plays to use.

Chiefs | Cassel throws two TD passes Week 3    Sun Sep 27, 05:34 PM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel was 14-for-18 for 90 yards with two touchdown passes Week 3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Our view: Cassel saved his owners with two touchdown passes, one in garbage time, but was limited by the loss of Dwayne Wade to a hamstring injury. Cassel seems unlikely to lose his job soon, but it's hard to see him as a viable QB2 with his current weapons.

Chiefs | Cassel limited in practice Wednesday    Wed Sep 23, 10:47 PM

Adam Teicher, of The Kanasas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) was limited in practice Wednesday, Sept. 23.

Our view: Cassel looked fairly good in his first action of the regular season last week, and the Chiefs are going to be careful not to aggravate that knee injury.

Chiefs | Sticking with Cassel in Week 3, but not closing door on potential change at quarterback    Wed Sep 23, 03:10 AM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said QB Matt Cassel will be the team's starting quarterback during Week 3. However, he left the door open for a change at quarterback. 'You've got to ultimately do what you think gives your team the best chance to win,' Haley said. 'If that means another quarterback being in there other than Matt Cassel, then sign me up.' Cassel had a quarterback rating of 66.3 during Week 2, while QB Brodie Croyle had a quarterback rating of 116.1 during Week 1.

Our view: Cassel was a bit rusty in week 2, but it's way too early for Haley to abandon him. It's easy to forget that Cassel was not great at first last year, and this is only his second year playing live football in the last nine years. It seems like he is trying to try up the heat under him to get him to perform with more urgency.

Chiefs | Cassel questionable for Week 2, game-time decision    Fri Sep 18, 04:58 PM

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 18. He is listed as questionable for Week 2 but is expected to play.

Our view: No reason to trust him against Oakland even if he's active, because he could be rusty, and head coach Todd Haley has already said we could see multiple QBs in the game.

Chiefs | Beat writer predicts Cassel will play, but status remains uncertain    Thu Sep 17, 09:31 PM

Kent Babb, of the Kansas City Star, reports that there's "nothing firm" on QB Matt Cassel's status for Sunday's game vs. the Raiders, but he predicts Cassel will play. Head coach Todd Haley said today that it's not out of the question that multiple QBs will be used in the game.

Our view: The bottom line is that you shouldn't trust Cassel against a Raiders defense that gave Philip Rivers fits on Monday night because he's playing behind one of the weaker offensive lines in the league.

Chiefs | Cassel limited Thursday, could start    Thu Sep 17, 04:02 PM

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) was limited during practice Thursday, Sept. 17. Cassel said he was making good progress and his mobility is far better that it was last week. His status for Week 2 is uncertain.

Our view: Cassel has been looking better in practice recently, and could try and give it a go versus the Raiders.

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) appeared to be running better during practice Wednesday, Sept. 16. His status for Week 2 is still uncertain.

Our view: If Cassel can't give it a go we should see Brodie Croyle under center for the Chiefs again. If Croyle keeps performing well there might be a little quarterback controversy brewing in KC.

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs head coach Todd Haley said he is not sure if QB Matt Cassel (knee) will be able to play in the team's Week 2 game.

Our view: Brodie Croyle actually made plays against the vaunted Ravens defense, and it looks like the team can count on him while Cassel misses time with this knee injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs have declared OG Andy Alleman, CB Brandon Flowers, RB Dantrell Savage, TE Jake O'Connell, QB Matt Gutierrez, QB Matt Cassel, LB Pierre Walters, DL Turk McBride inactive for Week 1.

Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) was limited during practice Friday, Sept. 11. He is listed as questionable for the team's Week 1 game.

Chiefs | Cassel still a little gimpy    Thu Sep 10, 02:27 PM

Kent Babb, from the Kansas City Star, reports on his twitter feed that Matt Cassel still looks a little gimpy. On hurry-up passing drills today, he seemed to run toward the huddle with a limp.

Our view: Cassel may start against the Ravens, but there is no way he should be starting for your fantasy team this weekend. The Ravens defense could ravage the Chiefs offense, and could knock out Cassel - even if he was 100%. The Chiefs would be wise to sit their franchise quarterback if he's not at full strength against a team like Baltimore.

Chiefs | Cassel's status for week 1 uncertain    Mon Sep 7, 07:43 PM

The Associated Press reports quarterback Matt Cassel appeared on Kansas City's practice field Monday for the first time since injuring his left knee on Aug. 29, but his status for Sunday's opener at Baltimore remained unclear. Coach Todd Haley was evasive whether Cassel would play Sunday. "I think that as the week goes on, we'll know a little bit more," said Haley. "We'll know a little bit more with Matt for sure. But it was good that he was out there. He was able to get through some things. As the week goes on a little further, we'll know a little more as far as where he's at."

Our view: According to the report, Brodie Croyle would be the week one starter against Baltimore if Cassel can't give it a go.

Chiefs | Cassel practices Monday    Mon Sep 7, 12:47 PM

Josh Looney, of KCChiefs.com, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) was in full pads and practicing with the team Monday, Sept. 7. He wore a brace on his left knee and did all individual drills that the quarterbacks participated in.

Our view: This is a good sign, but it's not guaranteed that he'll be ready for the week 1 matchup against the Ravens. In fact, Cassel would be best left out of the lineup against a team like Baltimore if he's not 100%. Even if Cassel is a go, we're not recommending him as a starter for your fantasy lineup because of the brutal matchup.

Chiefs | Team not planning on Cassel starting week 1?    Tue Sep 1, 07:37 PM

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports that the Chiefs are "clearly" not expecting Matt Cassel to play in the season opener vs. the Baltimore Ravens. Tyler Thigpen took most of the first-team snaps in Cassel's absence at practice on Tuesday, but Thigpen said the coaches haven't told that he's the starter until Cassel returns.

Our view: It is the Ravens, so perhaps it's better than Cassel sits this one out. You probably didn't draft him to be your starter, but if case you did, you might want to check the matchup of your #2 QB.

Chiefs | Cassel injury update    Mon Aug 31, 01:03 PM

Updating a previous item, ESPN.com reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) has a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee and could miss two to four weeks, according to Yahoo! Sports.

Our view: More bad news for the Chiefs here. The right side of the offensive line is playing poorly, and thus anyone who lines up at quarterback is going to be feeling pressure early and often. The Chiefs understand they don't have a high powered offense, and want to use the run game to take pressure off the quarterback. However, their defense is suspect and they may be forced into airing it out more than they want to in 2009.

Chiefs | Cassel could be out two to four weeks    Sun Aug 30, 08:01 PM

Jason Cole, of Yahoo! Sports, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (knee) has a strained MCL in his right knee and he could miss two to four weeks, according to a team source. The injury is not expected to require surgery, but he could miss the team's Week 1 game. QB Tyler Thigpen would start if Cassel is unable to play.

Our view: We're sure the Chiefs are happy they didn't trade away Tyler Thigpen now! This is a bad break for the Chiefs, but could happen again if they don't get better play from the right side of their offensive line.

Chiefs | Cassel injury not believed to be serious    Sun Aug 30, 04:30 PM

Updating an ongoing story, Aaron Wilson, of the National Football Post, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (leg) is not believed to have seriously injured his left leg, according to a league source. Cassel is expected to undergo more medical tests Sunday, Aug. 30.

Our view: Chiefs' fans can breathe a sigh of relief here. The right side of KC's offensive line is very weak, and Cassel's been running for his life in the preseason. The team will most likely keep him out of the final preseason game to get him ready for the regular season opener.

Chiefs | More on Cassel injury    Sat Aug 29, 10:29 PM

Continuing previous reports, Adam Teicher, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (left leg) was injured on the third play from scrimmage on his first pass attempt. CBSSports.com reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel (leg) suffered a leg injury during the team's preseason game Saturday, Aug. 29. His return to the game is questionable.

Chiefs | Shoddy offensive line will hold team back    Sat Aug 22, 08:00 PM

Jason Whitlock, of the Kansas City Star, reports that the Minnesota defensive front four "toyed with" the Chiefs offensive line, even though the Vikings were missing Pat Williams and Jared Allen. Cassel was sacked four times during his two quarters of action.

Our view: The Chiefs line was passable at times last year, but they will be depending a lot on second-year left tackle Branden Albert and elderly left guard Brian Waters to stabilize a line that is weak elsewhere. This is another great reason that you shouldn't count on Matt Cassel as a starting QB or Larry Johnson as a starting RB for your fantasy team.

Chiefs | Cassel gaining comfort in offense    Sat Aug 22, 08:43 AM

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel said following the team's preseason game Friday, Aug. 21, that he is becoming more comfortable with the team's offense. 'I'm getting more and more comfortable,' Cassel said. 'We had a few weeks of training camp, but I'm still getting familiar with the offense. It's a new offense and there are new players around us, so it's a process.'

Our view: It's a new year, new team, new coach to get used to and it's going to take a little time to adjust. The Chiefs are likely to pass a lot this year because their defense is going to give up a lot of points, so Cassel could be really comfortable by the time the fantasy playoffs roll around.

The Associated Press reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel was 9-for-14 for 99 yards with a touchdown pass as he led the team on two scoring drives Friday, Aug. 21, against the Minnesota Vikings. Cassel was also sacked three times in the game.

Our view: Cassel got a chance to play with #1 WR Dwyane Bowe, who worked his way out of Todd Haley's doghouse and back into the starting lineup. Cassel hit Bowe three times for 37 yards, including a touchdown.

Chiefs | Cassel slipping in camp?    Wed Aug 19, 11:22 AM

Adam Teicher, of the Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel's play has slipped since the early portion of training camp. Cassell struggled during practice Tuesday, Aug. 18, missing some throws. When asked whether Cassel has been the best quarterback in camp, head coach Todd Haley deferred. 'I think I'll hold out on answering that right now,' Haley said.

Our view: New coach Todd Haley hasn't been afraid to call out any of the Chiefs "star" players, and that includes their franchise quarterback. This follows a report from yesterday that stated Brodie Croyle might be a threat to Cassel's starting job. Fantasy owners don't like hearing a report like this, but Cassel should be nothing more than a backup on your fantasy squad. If he is the starter he could put up nice numbers, by default, because the Chiefs will have to throw a lot to stay in games this year.

Chiefs | Croyle a threat to Cassel's job?    Tue Aug 18, 07:12 PM

Kent Babb, of the Kansas City Star, reports that he's starting to believe that backup QB Brodie Croyle is threatening presumed starter Matt Cassel's job.

Our view: Croyle had a great preseason opener, and Babb also reported that head coach Todd Haley refused to say Cassel has been the best QB in training camp. We wouldn't greatly change Dwayne Bowe's outlook if Croyle were to start, because Croyle wouldn't last long with his slight build, and Cassel would soon be in again.

Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel made his debut with the Chiefs Saturday, Aug. 15, against the Houston Texans. He went 2-of-5 for 15 yards with no touchdowns or interceptions.

Kent Babb, of The Kansas City Star, reports Kansas City Chiefs QB Matt Cassel said his arm is about ready to fall off. While he may have been half-joking, it is based off of the amount of throwing he has done during training camp.

Our view: We'll see whether this affects Cassel as the season goes on. For now, we're pleased to hear that Haley is working the young team to the bone.

Chiefs | Cassel doesn't need Moss    Thu Jul 16, 04:33 PM

C.E. Wendler, from WarPaintIllustrated.com, thinks there are certain individuals who would have you believe Matt Cassel is a rich man today because he played with Randy Moss last season. The truth is that Cassel has earned a contract worth $63 million based on his own merits, and not because he rode anyone's coattails.

Our view: Matt Cassel is a rich man today because he played with Randy Moss last season! Yes, he played better as the season went on but the fact of the matter is he was surrounded by perhaps the best WR duo in the league with Moss and Wes Welker. It's hard to believe that one year's worth of starting in the NFL is worth that kind of jack. We hope it works out for Cassel in K.C. but don't be surprised when fans are calling for Tyler Thigpen by the midway point in the season.

Chiefs | Cassel contract details    Tue Jul 14, 03:02 PM

Updating previous reports, John Clayton, of ESPN.com, reports the Kansas City Chiefs have signed QB Matt Cassel to a six-year contract extension worth $63 million, according to a source. The deal includes $28 million in guaranteed money. Cassel will receive $40.5 million in the first three years of the contract.

Our view: This is pretty good money for a quarterback who only started 15 games in his NFL career. Cassel seemed to get more comfortable and had better production as the season went on, but his situation in Kansas City is completely different. He goes from throwing to Randy Moss and Wes Welker, to throwing to Dwayne Bowe and Mark Bradley. Cassel also takes a beating because he holds on to the ball too long as evidenced by his league high 47 sacks in 2008.

Kent Babb, from the Kansas City Star, reports the Chiefs have Matt Cassel locked into a long-term deal. The Chiefs have signed Cassel to a multi-year contract, a source told The Star on Tuesday.

Our view: Cassel had signed his one-year franchise deal with the Patriots earlier this year, and that would have paid him upward of $15 million in 2009. Terms of his new deal have not been released, although the team is expected to announce the deal today.

Chiefs | Not working out of the spread much    Fri Jul 3, 06:22 PM

Kent Babb, from the Kansas City Star, reports in two months of offseason practices, he didn't see the Chiefs practice many plays out of the spread formation. Some, but it was clear that Todd Haley and coordinator Chan Gailey would prefer to at least enter the season using Cassel in a Pro Style, drop-back look.

Our view: This doesn't make a lot of sense for many reasons. First, the Chiefs offensive line is a work in progress so they may not be able to protect Cassel as well as they should. Second, Tony Gonzalez is gone and the Chiefs passing game is devoid of playmaking ability outside of Dwayne Bowe. Defenses can stack the line to stop the run and harass Cassel with ease. Third, Cassel was sacked an NFL high 47 times last year and is known to hold onto the ball too long. It would make more sense to use a shotgun formation as much of Cassel's production came out of that last year for the Patriots. Only time will tell if the Chiefs quickly scrap the pro-style look for a spread/shotgun attack.
