Broncos | James Casey expected to be busy    Tue Jul 7, 10:53 PM

Denver Broncos FB James Casey feels more comfortable in the fullback role, and the team like his pass-catching ability as either a fullback or tight end. He is likely to be one of the busiest and most versatile players in the offense.

Footballguys view: Casey was also supposed to be busy and versatile in Philadelphia, but he never made his mark after signing a deal that included six million dollars in guarantees in 2013. If Casey affects fantasy leagues this year, it will only be as a touchdown vulture that denies scores to widely held Broncos weapons.

Broncos | James Casey agrees to terms    Sat Apr 11, 12:54 PM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) agreed to terms on a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos Saturday, April 11. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Footballguys view: Casey is a jack of all trades, but a master of none. He's big and athletic, but Casey has never played up to his potential as a pro. Casey will give the Broncos a good special teams player, fullback, H-back and part-time tight end.

Jaguars | Interested in James Casey    Thu Feb 26, 12:18 PM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) is scheduled to meet with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Footballguys view: Casey is a good all around tight end, but more proficient as a blocker than a pass-catcher. Jacksonville has bigger needs but they'll kick the tires and see what Casey can add. There are rumors that Jacksonville could be the frontrunners to land free agent TE Julius Thomas (Broncos). Stay tuned.

Redskins | Meeting with James Casey    Thu Feb 26, 12:17 PM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) is scheduled to meet with the Washington Redskins.

Footballguys view: Casey is a good all around tight end, but more proficient as a blocker than a pass-catcher. With Niles Paul a free agent and concerns remaining about Jordan Reed and his concussion issues, we could see Washington bringing in some help. There's a good chance Washington brings Paul back first, but Casey would be another solid option.

Bengals | James Casey to visit    Thu Feb 26, 12:17 PM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) is scheduled to meet with the Cincinnati Bengals.

Titans | James Casey will visit Tennessee    Thu Feb 26, 07:18 AM

Free-agent TE James Casey (Eagles) has a visit planned with the Tennessee Titans.

Footballguys view: The Titans took a chance on Taylor Thompson in the draft a few years ago, and that hasn't worked out. They have Delanie Walker as their top tight end, but could certainly use depth at the position. Casey is a versatile player who has never played up to his full potential. He'd be a decent backup for the Titans.

Eagles | James Casey hopes to get time on offense    Sat Jun 14, 10:45 AM

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey expects to contribute on special teams this upcoming season but hopes to receive some playing time with the offense as well. He is currently behind TEs Brent Celek and Zach Ertz on the depth chart.

Footballguys view: Casey is a jack of all trades, but a master of none. He can play several different positions, but you don't get fantasy points for versatility. The shine has been long gone from his dynasty value as well.

Eagles | James Casey could be in jeopardy    Thu Mar 13, 10:33 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles could consider releasing TE James Casey if they want to keep four running backs and five wide receivers on the roster next season. The Eagles would only keep TEs Brent Celek and Zach Ertz in that scenario.

Footballguys view: Casey is a jack of all trades, but he's a master of none. The Eagles are set with Brent Celek and Zach Ertz at tight end. They could easily move on from Casey as he's never played up to his potential as a pro.

Eagles | Team likes their TE corps    Sat Jan 25, 09:11 PM

The Philadelphia Eagles like TEs James Casey, Brent Celek and Zach Ertz, and just because Casey and Celek will get raises in salary to $4 million in 2014, it doesn't mean they won't be back.

Footballguys view: The team likes the TE corps, but fantasy owners can't stand it. All three lower each others value from a fantasy perspective.

Eagles | Still have plan for James Casey    Wed Sep 11, 12:23 PM

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur said the team still has plans for TE James Casey even though he received limited playing time Week 1.

Footballguys view: Casey has always had the talent but has never really played up to his potential. They may have plans for him but fantasy owners need to realize the career underachiever could continue to disappoint. He's buried on the depth chart behind Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz.

Eagles | James Casey's role uncertain    Mon Sep 9, 03:41 PM

Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur is not saying how TE James Casey will be used Week 1 but did say he likely will be active for the game. 'He's doing a good job. Most likely he's going to be active and we'll use him. The one thing about our roster, I think on offense, anybody that's active is preparing to play the whole game, so we'll just have to see how many of the position or personnel groups that we use involve him ... He's very multiple. He can play our wide spot. He can play our 'A' spot,' Shurmur said.

Footballguys view: Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz (Stanford) are ahead of Casey on the depth chart. Casey has always been an athletic and versatile player. He has never really played up to his potential as a pro.

Eagles | James Casey likely to go    Thu Sep 5, 10:33 AM

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey (hamstring) is likely to be active for Week 1.

Footballguys view: We'll see more from rookie Zach Ertz (Stanford) and veteran Brent Celek this week. It will be interesting to see how the Eagles work their TEs into the mix.

Eagles | James Casey practices    Wed Sep 4, 12:07 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly said Wednesday, Sept. 4, that TE James Casey (hamstring) returned to practice. Kelly did not specify the extent of Casey's participation, and the team does not have to report officially until Thursday, Sept. 5, since their Week 1 game is not until Monday, Sept. 9.

Footballguys view: Hamstring injuries are known to linger if not treated properly. Casey is athletically gifted but hasn't yet played up to his potential. He's third in the pecking order with the Eagles behind Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz.

Eagles | James Casey injured    Thu Aug 29, 08:02 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey (hamstring) suffered a hamstring injury in the team's preseason game Thursday, Aug. 29, and will not return.

Footballguys view: Casey is a talented and versatile player but he sure does have a tendency to get banged up. We'll see how severe this injury is when the medical staff gets a look at him.

Eagles | Tight ends being used in various formations    Wed Aug 14, 05:05 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Brent Celek played in all 21 snaps with the first-team offense in the team's first preseason game, and he was used everywhere on the field and either blocked or ran passing routes. Celek started eight plays lined up as a halfback and four times lined up as a traditional tight end. He also was lined up four times in the slot, three times split out wide and twice in the backfield to the left of the quarterback in shotgun. 'In this offense, you've got to know every position, and they can just interchange you anywhere,' Celek said. 'And it's fun. It's a new experience. You get to do different things. Guys like it.' He stayed in to block on 11 plays.

Footballguys view: Celek has low TE2 value this year, but his upside is limited by an offense that will also target Zach Ertz and James Casey at the tight end position. Celek is the one most likely to be the "blocking tight end" on any given play.

Eagles | James Casey works underneath    Wed Aug 7, 09:07 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey saw plenty of work underneath on quick out patterns during joint practice with the New England Patriots Wednesday, Aug. 7.

Footballguys view: Casey is an incredibly gifted athlete who can line up at multiple positions on the football field. He's going to be part of the TEBC the Eagles will employ in 2013. If QB Nick Foles wins the starting job then we'll see more from the TEs than we would if QB Michael Vick is under center.

Eagles | Two sharing top TE spot    Tue Aug 6, 12:18 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TEs James Casey and Brent Celek are each listed as starting tight ends on the team's initial preseason depth chart released Monday, Aug. 5.

Footballguys view: Casey is the "move" tight end, and more attractive for fantasy purposes, but still just a low TE2. Casey is only worth drafting in very deep or TE premium leagues, because rookie Zach Ertz will also see the field a lot, especially in the red zone. Ertz is still the option with the highest fantasy ceiling of the three.

Eagles | Brent Celek considered blocking TE    Tue Jul 23, 12:29 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Brent Celek is considered a blocking tight end in the new offensive system installed by head coach Chip Kelly, while FB/TE James Casey and TE Zach Ertz are considered primarily receivers.

Footballguys view: An important note for fantasy owners here. If Nick Foles wins the QB job then we'll see the team use more two TE sets. Ertz is a natural receiver with soft hands who does an excellent job of making contested catches. Casey came over from the Texans in free agency and has yet to play up to his enormous athletic potential.

Eagles | Two cleared for camp    Mon Jul 22, 02:40 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE James Casey (knee) and C Jason Kelce (knee) have been cleared to participate at the start of training camp.

Footballguys view: Casey could be involved in the offense more than some think. He's always been incredibly athletic but failed to play up to his potential with the Texans. If QB Nick Foles wins the starting job then we'll see Philadelphia use more two TE sets. Casey is competing for targets with veteran Brent Celek and rookie Zach Ertz.

Eagles | TE Harbor on the trade block?    Sat Jul 6, 07:18 PM

Philadelphia Eagles TE Clay Harbor may be on the trade block. Long time beat writer Paul Domowitch speculates Harbor could be on the move and pegs the New England Patriots as a team with interest.

Footballguys view: This is the same speculation we've seen from other beat writers with other teams. The Patriots may not have as big of need at the TE position as some think. We may not even see the TE position emphasized (like it was in 2012) as the Patriots structure their offense without Aaron Hernandez. Players like Michael Hoomanawanui, Jake Ballard, and Zach Sudfeld will get more of an opportunity in training camp to prove what they can do.

Eagles | Working with Ertz on blocking    Sun May 26, 07:17 PM

The Eagles have been working with rookie TE Zach Ertz on his blocking ability. Tight End coach Ted Williams said this about the rookie. "[Receiving] is his strength. But he is big enough, he's strong enough, he's willing and we've got to be able to get him to be an in-line tight end.We have to produce that skill in him because you can't just be a receiver in this offense and you just can't be a blocker in this offense, you've got to be able to do both."

Footballguys view: Ertz is a talented move TE with good route quickness and separation ability. He could add a little more muscle to help him hold up at the point of attack when blocking in line. He doesn't need to be dominating as a blocker, just competent. His ability to improve his blocking ability could determine how much playing time he gets in 2013. Ertz is competing for playing time alongside veterans Brent Celek and James Casey.

Eagles | James Casey to be used in multiple spots    Thu May 23, 01:07 PM

Philadelphia Eagles FB James Casey, who was used primarily as a fullback for the Houston Texans, is expected to be used all over the place in head coach Chip Kelly's 'Joker' offense. Casey had 34 catches last year, but he caught 111 passes in his final season at Rice.

Footballguys view: Casey needed a fresh start and gets one with the Eagles. He never quite played up to his potential with the Texans but still has upside. We'll see if Casey can become a favorite target in this passing game. He's position versatile and can line up anywhere in the formation.

Eagles | James Casey has surgery    Thu May 23, 12:43 PM

Philadelphia Eagles FB James Casey (knee) underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee Thursday, May 23, and he's expecting to be back at practice in two weeks. The team expects Casey to be ready for training camp.

Footballguys view: Casey has an opportunity to be involved in this Chip Kelly offense more than he was utilized in Houston. He needs to get healthy, stay healthy, and show that he can be more than just an athletic freak. Casey has the size, versatility, and athleticism to create mismatches when he's on the field. He needed a fresh start and is an interesting TE to keep an eye on for fantasy owners in deep leagues.

Eagles | Three TEs expected to receive playing time     Fri May 17, 04:24 PM

Philadelphia Eagles head coach Chip Kelly indicated TEs Brent Celek, Zach Ertz and James Casey are expected to receive playing time during games this season.

Footballguys view: There could be plenty of targets for the TEs in the Kelly system this year. Celek is the leader of the group and could be the featured player at the position. He has a $4.5MM cap number this year and may be asked to take a pay cut before we get to training camp. It will be interesting to see how this position battle and the targets therein shake out.

Free-agent TE James Casey (Texans) has received interest from 14 teams this offseason.
