Giants | Pass on several RBs    Tue Nov 27, 11:03 PM

The New York Giants gave free-agent RBs Rock Cartwright (49ers), Derrick Coleman (Vikings), Ryan Grant (Redskins) and Cadillac Williams (Rams) tryouts Tuesday, Nov. 27, before settling on RBs Kregg Lumpkin and Ryan Torain.

Footballguys view: Lumpkin is a versatile back who can contribute as a runner of receiver out of the backfield. Torain is more of a banger who can grind it out between the tackles and can be effective in a one cut system.

49ers | Frank Gore said he has plenty left    Tue May 8, 05:16 PM

San Francisco 49ers RB Frank Gore feels he has plenty left in the tank despite the team's plans to ease his workload in coming years. RBs Brandon Jacobs, Kendall Hunter, Anthony Dixon, Rock Cartwright and LaMichael James are all on roster and will threaten Gore's playing time. 'I feel like I still got a lot left in my tank,' Gore said. 'I want to show it off that I still got a lot left in my tank and I can play at a high level. I will play at a high level as long as God blesses me to be healthy so I can go out and do something that I love.'

Footballguys view: Gore could be stronger than ever with a reduced workload. He'll still be the lead back for the team, but we'll see Brandon Jacobs in some short yardage and goalline situations. We could also see both Kendall Hunter and LaMichael James replace Gore in some obvious passing situations.

The Oakland Raiders have declared OG Bruce Campbell, CB Chimdi Chekwa, CB Chris X. Johnson, FB Marcel Reece, DL Matt Shaughnessy, TE Richard Gordon, RB Rock Cartwright inactive for Week 6.

Raiders | Six not expected to play in Week 6    Wed Oct 12, 11:12 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Rock Cartwright (calf), CB Chimdi Chekwa (hamstring), TE Richard Gordon (hand), LB Rolando McClain (ankle), RB Marcel Reese (ankle) and DL Matt Shaughnessy (shoulder) are not expected to play in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns. If either of the players can practice Thursday, Oct. 13, or Friday, Oct. 14, they still have a chance to play Sunday, Oct. 16. Head coach Hue Jackson doesn't like using players in the game if they are unable to practice.

Footballguys view: There has been some whispers that new acquisition Aaron Curry could be tried out in the middle in McClain's stead. The Raiders don't have an experienced backup MLB on the roster, so it will be interesting to see what they do with the position.

Raiders | Have options at kick returner    Sat Sep 17, 02:43 PM

The Oakland Raiders could use RB Taiwan Jones, RB Rock Cartwright or WR Nick Miller as their kick returner in Week 2 with WR Jacoby Ford (hamstring) being ruled out.

Footballguys view: We'd like to see Jones on the field, even if it is only as a return man during his rookie year. The Eastern Washington product is extremely fast and has ankle breaking moves in the open field.

Raiders | Michael Bush likely to start in Week 5    Thu Oct 7, 11:12 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Michael Bush (thumb) handled the majority of repetitions in practice Thursday, Oct. 7, and is likely to start in Week 5 against the San Diego Chargers, according to The Associated Press. Bush has just 10 carries this season. 'If you look at when Mike's played, it's been the same things,' head coach Tom Cable said. 'He runs more physical in the box maybe. You may not get as much play on the perimeter but you'll get it running downhill at the defense. (McFadden) has been very productive so we've got to find a way to get that same production but I think Michael's ready to take that load.' RB Rock Cartwright will be the backup to Bush if RBs Darren McFadden (hamstring) and Michael Bennett (hamstring) are ruled out.

Footballguys view: Bush is a solid RB2 play with RB1 upside this week and he is a must-add if he is still on your waiver wire. McFadden should only miss another week at most, but Bush has a chance to force his way back into a committee with this opportunity.

Raiders | Michael Bush may play large role in Week 5    Mon Oct 4, 08:25 PM

Oakland Raiders RB Michael Bush (thumb) could be in for a heavy workload against the San Diego Chargers in Week 5, reports Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers. RBs Darren McFadden (hamstring) and Michael Bennett (hamstring) both suffered hamstring injuries during Week 4, so Bush may see his number called often. The team may also work FB Rock Cartwright into the mix. Bush plans to ditch the protective wrap on his left thumb that he has worn since suffering a hand injury during the preseason.

Footballguys view: Darren McFadden's hot start seemed too good to be true. Bush could have a chance to force an RBBC for the rest of the year if he runs strong vs the Chargers.

Raiders | Competition for No. 3 running back spot    Mon Aug 9, 10:37 AM

Oakland Raiders RBs Michael Bennett and Rock Cartwright are in an intriguing battle for the teams No. 3 running back spot, according to Jerry McDonald, of ANG Newspapers. If RBs Michael Bush and Darren McFadden are healthy, then Cartwright is the better option because of special teams play. However, if one of the lead backs are injured, Bennett looks like the superior runner.

Footballguys view: Bennett's not the same back he used to be, but he's more of a threat with the football in his hands than Cartwright. If McFadden and Bush stay healthy then there's unlikely to be much playing time for the Raiders third-string running back.

Redskins | Cartwright says he couldn't get into a rhythm    Fri Dec 11, 01:17 AM

David Elfin, of The Washington Times, reports Washington Redskins RB Rock Cartwright is disappointed he lost his starting job at running back. Cartwright had 67 yards on 13 carries against the Dallas Cowboys Week 11, but he has been outgained by RB Quinton Ganther the past two weeks. Cartwright said, "But when you run the ball in spurts - two carries here, three carries there - you can't get hot. You guys can see it. The Dallas game, I got into a rhythm, and we started moving the ball." He had five carries for 20 yards early in the first quarter Week 13, but he didn't get another carry until the third quarter. Cartwright said, 'I get a couple carries early and then not another one until the second half - what do they expect? That's crazy. But I don't control it, I'm not worried about it and all I can do is go out and play special teams."

Redskins | Committee approach to run game to continue    Tue Dec 8, 02:59 PM

Jason Reid, of The Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins' running-back-by-committee between RBs Rock Cartwright, Quinton Ganther and Marcus Mason will continue after an impressive performance in Week 13. 'I like the way all the running backs are giving effort,' head coach Jim Zorn said. 'It's one of those deals where, by committee, we're doing a pretty good job. I think each guy in his own right is going as hard as he can. I think we're getting better as we go down here. The guys are feeling more and more comfortable getting themselves up the field.'

Footballguys view: Cartwright, Ganther, and Mason are not exciting fantasy options and the Redskins may decide to feature more of the passing game as the season comes to a close.

The Redskins may rotate other backs with Betts to keep him fresh. Head coach Jim Zorn said Friday, Nov. 13, RBs Rock Cartwright and Quinton Ganther could be used in a committee approach this week against the Denver Broncos.

Rick Maese, of The Washington Post, reports Washington Redskins RB Rock Cartwright and RB Quinton Ganther likely will see playing time at running back in Week 10.

Footballguys view: Both Portis and Betts are banged up, so the Redskins may look further down the depth chart for production in the running game. However, if they get behind early against the Broncos they will be forced to air it out in order to stay in the game.
