Cardinals | Thursday practice report    Thu Dec 25, 08:18 PM

Arizona Cardinals SS Deone Bucannon (knee), LB Larry Foote (knee) and DT Dan Williams (foot) did not practice Thursday, Dec. 25. WR Jaron Brown (toe), DE Calais Campbell (hip), TE John Carlson (calf), OG Jonathan Cooper (wrist), FS Rashad Johnson (ankle), C Ted Larsen (shoulder) and LB Matt Shaughnessy (shoulder) were limited participants, and LB Lorenzo Alexander (knee) and FS Tyrann Mathieu (thumb) were full participants.

Footballguys view: The Cardinals could win the #1 seed with some help, but it much more likely that they are the five seed and will travel to the NFC south winner, so there's little reason them to push injured players in Week 17.

Cardinals | John Carlson back to 100 percent    Fri Oct 17, 11:40 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE John Carlson (knee) is almost back to 100 percent after suffering a knee injury in the Week 6 game. Head coach Bruce Arians said Friday, Oct. 17, that Carlson practiced better than Thursday, Oct. 16, when he returned to the field after missing time Wednesday, Oct. 15.

Footballguys view: Carlson being back to 100 percent would have more fantasy relevance if the Cardinals actually used their tight ends in the passing game.

Cardinals | John Carlson looking like top TE    Sat Aug 2, 11:27 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE John Carlson worked with the first-team Saturday, Aug. 2.

Footballguys view: Carlson may be the top tight end in Arizona, and it matters not for fantasy purposes. Bruce Arians system doesn't use the tight end that much.

Cardinals | John Carlson impressing    Thu Jul 3, 04:14 PM

Arizona Cardinals TE John Carlson has been the tight end who impressed the most during organized team activities and minicamp. Head coach Bruce Arians complimented Carlson's ability to pick up the system quickly, his speed and hands, and he considers Carlson an adequate blocker. Arians wants physical tight ends who are capable blockers. Carlson will compete for targets with TEs Rob Housler, Jake Ballard and Troy Niklas (hand).

Footballguys view: Carlson had a brief moment with the Seattle Seahawks where he looked like he could be an impact player but he soon faded into the background, relegated to blocking duties. It was much the same in Minnesota, though he was also stuck behind Kyle Rudolph and only really saw some work when Rudolph was hurt last year. The Cardinals haven't had a good pass-catching tight end in a long time, but there is danger here as our own Andrew Garda reported from the Combine that head coach Bruce Arians wants his tight ends to block first and catch second. So Carlson might find himself blocking a lot this year, perhaps one reason why most of our staff sees him as no better than a low-end TE3.

Cardinals | Expected to keep four TEs    Thu Jun 12, 06:48 PM

The Arizona Cardinals are expected to keep four tight ends on their roster. Head coach Bruce Arians feels the team probably has too many legitimate options to keep them all. TEs John Carlson, Jake Ballard, Rob Housler and Troy Niklas (hand) are the favorites to make the roster.

Cardinals | John Carlson signs    Fri Mar 7, 04:41 PM

The Arizona Cardinals signed free-agent TE John Carlson (Vikings) to an undisclosed two-year deal Friday, March 7.

Footballguys view: Carlson will make $4.65 million as part of his two-year deal, according to a source. We'll see how the Cardinals move forward using both Rob Housler and Carlson. The Bruce Arians system isn't that TE heavy, and Carlson should make little fantasy impact in 2014.

Cardinals | Meet with John Carlson    Thu Mar 6, 01:53 PM

The Arizona Cardinals met with free agent TE John Carlson (Vikings) Thursday, March 6.

Footballguys view: Carlson had already got his ridiculous contract - hopefully he saved his money because that won't happen again. The Cardinals could use a pass catcher, an at this point, Carlson could come cheaply.

Minnesota Vikings TE John Carlson restructured his contract but will still receive his $1.2 million guarantee and can earn up to $3 million via workout incentives.

Vikings | John Carlson disappoints    Sun Jan 27, 09:09 PM

Minnesota Vikings TE John Carlson (knee) struggled to get involved in the passing game in his first season in Minnesota, and that is supposed to be his strength. He received $7.9 million in the first year of his deal (including deferred payments) and would have $1.2 million of his $2.9 million base salary for 2013 fully guaranteed if he's on the roster when the league year begins. The team might give him another chance if he is healthy, but nothing is certain after a disappointing 2012 season.

Footballguys view: This contract didn't look good when the Vikings doled it out to Carlson, and it looks even worse now.

The Minnesota Vikings may consider releasing WR Michael Jenkins and TE John Carlson this offseason in order to create some salary cap space.
