Ravens | Finding backup QB a priority    Thu May 19, 11:32 AM

Jamison Hensley, from the Baltimore Sun, reports Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome recently said signing a veteran backup QB would be a priority in free agency along with adding a pass rusher and a fullback. Matt Hasselbeck, Rex Grossman, Chad Pennington, Kerry Collins, Alex Smith, Todd Collins and Todd Bouman could all be options for the team.

Footballguys view: The list of available quarterbacks could dwindle quickly once transactions are allowed. Hasselbeck and Smtih could stay with their respective teams, while Rex Grossman is assuming he'll be back in Washington. That leaves Kerry Collins and Chad Pennington as two of the most likely quarterbacks.

Ravens | Cantwell eager to show what he can do    Sun May 15, 07:03 PM

Mike Wilkening, from ProFootballWeekly.com, reports Ravens QB Hunter Cantwell knows time will be of the essence for him as he tries to make the roster. "It's going to be instant competition," Cantwell told PFW. "That drives you day in and day out, that you can't take a day off."

Footballguys view: Cantwell and Joe Flacco are the only veteran quarterbacks on the Ravens roster. Rookie Tyrod Taylor was selected in the sixth-round of the 2011 NFL Draft but is a raw developmental player. Cantwell is a big QB who sees the field well and has a strong arm to pepper passes all over the field.

Ravens | Seven signed to future contracts    Tue Jan 18, 12:07 AM

The Baltimore Ravens signed OL Brady Bond, QB Hunter Cantwell, CB Danny Gorrer, WR Justin Harper, LB Albert McClellan, OL Andre Ramsey and RB Curtis Steele to reserve/future contracts Monday, Jan. 17, reports Edward Lee, of The Baltimore Sun.

Footballguys view: Curtis Steele is an interesting RB for deep dynasty owners to keep an eye on. Steele is a very instinctive runner, has a low center of gravity, and good leg drive. If Willis McGahee refuses to take a pay cut and is gone from Baltimore it would open up an opportunity for guys like Steele and Jalen Parmele behind Ray Rice.

Ravens | Hunter Cantwell added to practice squad    Mon Sep 6, 01:45 PM

The Baltimore Ravens have signed free-agent QB Hunter Cantwell (Panthers) to their practice squad, reports BaltimoreRavens.com's Mike Duffy.

Footballguys view: Cantwell was playing well earlier in the offseason and the Ravens could develop him into a quality backup on the practice squad.

Panthers | Hunter Cantwell waived    Sat Sep 4, 11:19 AM

The Carolina Panthers have waived QB Hunter Cantwell, sources told Darin Gantt, of the Charlotte Observer.

Footballguys view: Cantwell made great strides this offseason, but the Panthers preferred Tony Pike. Look for Cantwell to catch on a practice squad somewhere, if not a 53-man roster.

Panthers | Jimmy Clausen, Hunter Cantwell splitting snaps    Tue Aug 10, 06:36 PM

Carolina Panthers QBs Jimmy Clausen and Hunter Cantwell are sharing snaps with the second-team offense during practices, reports Darin Gantt, of the Charlotte Observer.

Footballguys view: Many thought Clausen would just simply show up to Panthers camp and be named the backup behind Matt Moore, but he was unable to beat out Cantwell in minicamp. We'll see if he can pass him on the depth chart in the preseason. Either way we don't see Clausen challenging Matt Moore for the starting job in 2010.

Panthers | Clausen might blow his chance to start if late to camp    Sat Jul 24, 05:37 PM

Darin Gantt, from the Charlotte Observer, reports rookie QB Jimmy Clausen may lose his outside chance at the starting job in 2010 if he holds out for a big contract.

Footballguys view: Clausen will have to beat out second-string QB Hunter Cantwell before he can challenge Matt Moore for the starting job. Many expected Clausen to simply show up and be labeled as the backup, but Cantwell has been arguably the most impressive player in Panthers camp. Matt Moore is working on a one-year deal, and Clausen is seen as the QB of the future in Carolina -- but the future will have to wait as we don't expect Clausen to see the field until 2011.

Panthers | Cantwell moves into #2 QB spot    Mon Jul 12, 04:50 PM

Darin Gantt, from the Charlotte Observer, reports second-year quarterback Hunter Cantwell spent this entire offseason seeing reps with the second-team. Even though rookie Jimmy Clausen is thought to be the backup behind Matt Moore, Cantwell is the leader in the battle of the backups. "Yeah, outside of this facility and this stadium, I probably am a dark horse, and people don't know me," Cantwell said with a grin earlier this summer. "You see these heralded, talented young guys. But I try to concentrate on what's happening inside this program. I feel like I've established myself with them, and they know what I'm capable of, how to push me in certain areas and how to make me better."

Footballguys view: Cantwell is big, and has one of the strongest arms in the league which makes him a perfect fit for the play action system that Carolina runs. He will compete with rookie Jimmy Clausen in training camp to be the backup to Matt Moore. Clausen is seen as the QB of the future in Carolina, but Cantwell is not going to give up without a fight. The Panthers could continue to develop Cantwell, and then trade him away just like the Chargers did with Charlie Whitehurst.

Panthers | Clausen growing more comfortable    Tue Jun 15, 08:59 PM

Steve Reed, from CarolinaGrowl.com, reports that with each passing day, rookie quarterback Jimmy Clausen is growing more comfortable with the Carolina Panthers offense. Clausen's stock in Carolina is clearly on the rise as he's performed well in practices since being selected this past April in the second round. He's still behind starter Matt Moore on the depth chart and it's looking like he'll have a battle on his hands with the ever-improving Hunter Cantwell for No. 2 spot on the quarterback depth chart. But make no dobut about it, Clausen will be right there in the mix. He's making all the throws. He's making good decisions. And, to no one's surprise, he's catching on to the playbook pretty fast.

Footballguys view: Clausen hasn't officially passed Hunter Cantwell for the second-string job, but to quote T.O. - "It's only a matter of time." Matt Moore is entrenched as the starter and we think Clausen will spend his entire rookie season learning behind the veteran quarterback. The Panthers were notoriously lenient when Jake Delhomme was throwing interceptions like beads at Mardi Gras, and they should stick with Moore even when he struggles this year. Next year Clausen should get his shot to compete for the starting job in Carolina.

Panthers | Jimmy Clausen working with second-team offense    Thu May 27, 11:39 PM

Steve Reed, from CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers QB Jimmy Clausen started taking reps with the second-team offense ahead of QB Hunter Cantwell Thursday, May 27.

Footballguys view: It didn't take long for Clausen to climb up the depth chart, and we expect him to be the main backup for the Panthers behind Matt Moore in week one of the regular season. Some believe Clausen could push Moore for the job in training camp, but we don't see that happening unless there's an absolute collapse to Moore's game in the preseason. Clausen will likely be the backup this year, and perhaps could get a chance to compete for the starting job next year.

Panthers | QB Cantwell on the roster bubble?    Tue Apr 27, 10:20 AM

CBSSports.com reports the Panthers took Notre Dame's Jimmy Clausen in the second round of the NFL draft and followed it up with the pick of Cincinnati's Tony Pike with one of four sixth-round selections. Both players are expected to beat out second-year QB Hunter Cantwell for a roster spot; the team also has incumbent starter Matt Moore.

Footballguys view: The Panthers have a group of talented (yet unproven) quarterbacks behind starter Matt Moore. Clausen is the quarterback of the future, and should back up Matt Moore this year. Pike and Cantwell will battle for perhaps the final spot in the QB corps, unless Carolina decides to carry four quarterbacks. ESPN's Chris Mortensen believes that Pike may have trouble beating out Cantwell for that roster spot. Cantwell could possibly be cut and placed on the practice squad so the Panthers can continue to develop his pro game. If Pike were to get cut he likely would not make it through waivers.

Panthers | Little experience amongst quarterbacks    Thu Apr 15, 12:07 PM

The Carolina Panthers have fewer games started by quarterbacks on roster than any other team in the NFL, reports Charles Chandler, of The Charlotte Observer. Starting QB Matt Moore has eight starts under his belt, while current back Hunter Cantwell hasn't even taken a regular-season snap. The next lowest in the league is 19 combined starts, held by the St. Louis Rams quarterbacks. It appears questionable whether the Panthers will add a veteran option, as team officials are said to be working with a tight internal budget.

Panthers | Week 17 Inactives    Sun Jan 3, 11:37 AM

The Carolina Panthers have declared CB C.J. Wilson, RB DeAngelo Williams, DL Derek Landri, LB Hilee Taylor, QB Hunter Cantwell, LB Mortty Ivy, OT Rob Petitti, RB Tyrell Sutton inactive for Week 17.

Footballguys view: Another week as the primary ballcarrier for Jonathan Stewart. He's a great start against a New Orleans team who's inactivated much of their team this week.

Panthers | Cantwell could make practice squad    Mon Jun 29, 08:02 PM

Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers QB Hunter Cantwell has a better chance of making the team's practice squad than the 53-man roster.

Footballguys view: Cantwell is currently 4th on the depth chart behind Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown, and Matt Moore. It's unlikely that he would move up in the pecking order during training camp unless injuries hit. Cantwell is a big, strong QB that Carolina could keep around on their practice squad and try to develop his game further.

Panthers | Cantwell improved his throwing motion    Mon Jun 29, 08:02 PM

Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports Carolina Panthers QB Hunter Cantwell has worked to improve his throwing motion in recent months and is anxious to prove he can play on the next level.

Footballguys view: Cantwell threw 16 interceptions in his senior season at Louisville last year. Cantwell has shown good arm strength on deep routes, but his accuracy remains a question.

Panthers | Cantwell signed    Mon Apr 27, 10:47 AM

Steve Reed, of CarolinaGrowl.com, reports the Carolina Panthers have signed undrafted free-agent QB Hunter Cantwell (Louisville).

Footballguys view: With Jake Delhomme, Josh McCown, and Matt Moore on the roster Cantwell must have felt that Carolina gave him the best chance to earn a roster spot. Hunter Cantwell is a big and strong QB with the arm to throw deep. He drives the ball with good velocity, but his mechanics need work. Operating out of the shotgun for most of his snaps at Louisville, Cantwell must get used to being under center. He is a project QB with limited upside.
